McCollum the Sore Loser?

This is getting disgraceful. I realize the level of acrimony is out of control in Florida, but this behavior is typical of McCollum and one of the chief reasons his opponent barely lost McCollum’s home county — ponder that point.

McCollum hired most of Charlie Crist’s 2006 campaign staff, which happened to be former Florida GOP Chairman Jim Greer’s inner circle. Yes, the indicted JIm Greer.

McCollum accepted Jim Greer’s endorsement gladly, but he never endorsed Marco Rubio after Crist dropped out of the GOP primary.

Now he says he is reserving his endorsement of Rick Scott and he is toying with the idea of endorsing the Democrat?

Primaries are a good thing. And please note that the politicians in office the longest have the hardest time letting go without being bitter.

I think we could be forgiven...

if we ask for a little background / evidence that supports the claim that McCollum will endorse Sink.

There was that unfortunate business concerning scurrilous claims about Mike Castle based on nothing in particular, remember. McCollum is a conservative, and he deserves certain leeway.

Here you go

Who will stand on either hand and keep this bridge with me?

This is pretty clear-cut.

kinggold Thursday, August 26th at 1:28PM EDT (link)

And it dissolves his leeway. I had serious misgivings about the GOP primary from the get-go, especially because the party committees were exerting undue pressure on Scott to back off.

The RGA ought to now pressure McCollum either to endorse Scott or get out of his way. For them not to do so would rival even the most pernicious of the NRSC’s strategies.

I Guess McCollum Is Finished With The GOP Then

Because no Republican would ever vote for him again if he endorses Sink (or Chiles).

I voted for McCollum because I think Scott is a crook. Though I also flirted with the idea of voting for the “none of the above” candidate Col. McWhatshisface with all the sleaze that what going on in this campaign. I think we just like to make a big mess of things in Florida.

Did you do any original research?

cwilson (Diary) Thursday, August 26th at 1:19PM EDT (link)

or did you just take what you heard in a political attack ad as the gospel truth? You’re welcome to your opinion — and you may well be right; I’m sure Scott was cited for speeding or a rolling stop once or twice in his life. But it’s usually nice when opinions are based on facts, rather than propaganda. Go find some: google is over there—>

I share bannor’s sentiments entirely. My bad opinion of Scott is based on… Scott. Ditto for McCollum. We’re in scorched earth mode right now in my opinion — and the first, best, thing to do if we’re going to beat Sink is to cease the ankle-biting.

If you really want folks like bannor, I, and the other non-Scott voters to tell you why we really don’t like Scott — we can certainly accommodate. I’m not sure how it is productive (on any level) to provoke such a response.

The crook?

Erick Erickson (Diary) Thursday, August 26th at 1:21PM EDT (link)

Assuming, just for sake of argument, that you are right. How does that make him different from any other politician?

Who will stand on either hand and keep this bridge with me?

You can't seriously believe that

In The Hook (Diary) Thursday, August 26th at 1:47PM EDT (link)

Come on Erick. Yes, politicians have inflated senses of themselves. Yes, they cling bitterly to power. Yes, some misuse taxpayer funds to their own benefit. But there are some that are trying to really be public servants.

I wouldn’t call McCollum the ideal public servant; he made his uneasy deal with the devil to stay afloat by remaining mum regarding Greer. Even Rubio was quiet for awhile on it because well, connections and money are king in politics. But that doesn’t make McCollum a crook by any stretch. Scott on the other hand either engaged in fraud, willfully ignored it or was too incompetent to notice what was going on at his own firm for years. As I wrote before, my father personally worked with Scott when he was a bigwig at GE Medical and Scott was running Columbia HCA. Let’s just say my father has little good to say about Rick Scott.

All of that said, I’m going to stay out of the non-Rubio related Florida threads henceforth. I can understand not endorsing Scott; I’m not going to either. But I hope McCollum will follow the advice of a lowly member of the rank and file and just shut up entirely. Even considering endorsing Sink is tantamount to partisan treason and lower than Crist’s vacillations here.

AngryMatt, *you* willfully ignore evidence

Fla Mom (Diary) Thursday, August 26th at 2:32PM EDT (link)

…that is exculpatory to Rick Scott, yet you talk about willful ignorance on Rick Scott’s part. Take cwilson’s advice and use Google (or see previous messages posted on RedState that direct you to outside sources). I did, to great effect, though I was thoroughly undecided between Scott and McCollum before doing so. Hey, and I’m not even a ‘journalist.’

Fine, so your dad doesn’t like Rick Scott. Does he have anything specific to say about illegal things he observed Rick Scott do?

I would still ask you: On what *evidence* do you base your beliefs? Not what news story reported the fine and the government’s view of things, what *evidence?*

Finally, remember Reagan’s 11th Commandment: “Thou shalt not speak ill of any fellow Republican.” Saying, especially now after the primary is over, but frankly even before it, without *evidence* to the contrary, “Scott on the other hand either engaged in fraud, willfully ignored it or was too incompetent to notice what was going on at his own firm for years” puts you in Alex Sink’s camp, imho.

In The Hook (Diary) Thursday, August 26th at 2:47PM EDT (link)

Of course, being that I’m a writer I’m always come with some kind of wicked suspicion. Never mind that I write for financial trades and not the MSM. Whatever.

I did my own research on Scott and came to an opposite conclusion. Period. What’s so wrong about that? I’m not going to re-hash the whole business because what’s the point? The primary is over and while I stridently disagree with my fellow Florida GOPers decision, that decision has been made.

Frankly I’m glad I’m moving to Virginia in a few weeks and don’t have to deal with this nonsense though I am rueful that I can’t vote for Rubio in the general and put an end to Charlie Crist’s career. I nearly gagged when I had to vote for him in 2006, so having a hand in finishing him off would be sweet. Ah well, time to focus on getting Hurt elected and kicking Tom Perriello out of the House.

In this race I still feel like I could of flipped a coin. There wasn’t much difference between the 2 guys. Which i find frustrating. So i ended voting on who I felt would be the stronger candidate in the general. which is irrelevant now since McCollum lost and is behaving inexcusably. So in November when i’m voting for Rubio I’ll pull the lever for Scott since at this point lets just beat the Dem.

Bill M. needs to be quiet about such things. Endorse Scott or do nothing. But endorsing Sink or Chiles is not acceptable. He should take a few days and do what he must. This is not easy for me and I’m just a voter . . . but except in rare and extraordinary circumstances, we do not jump ship.

watch the Florida campaign up close. I do know that the Gov primary here in TN got very nasty. Oh it was silly the back and forth negative ads. I can only imagine Florida was like.

I just hate the negative nature the primary campaigns this year. I know Scott had a positive platform too but apparently he also attacked McCollum

I suspect McCollum will come around to endorse Scott. Perhaps even before Didier endorses Rossi. VanderPlatt waited nearly a month before endorsing Branstad. Sometimes it takes a while to heal wounds.

Bill McCollum is his own worst enemy

bruzilla (Diary) Thursday, August 26th at 1:50PM EDT (link)

I used to be a huge supporter of McCollum. As a single-issue voter (gun control), I couldn’t find a better protector and champion of the Second Ammendment than Bill McCollum. But he failed to recognize the electorate is in a transition away from blindly following the guidance of a party’s leaders, and are moving towards more self-determination based on doing their own research and discussing opinions with other voters.

McCollum acted like his record of being a conservative and Republican entitled him to his turn at the Big Chair, and that view isn’t going to win nowadays. Voters want to hear why they should vote for you, not why they shouldn’t vote for your opponent. Scott gave reasons to vote for Scott, while McCollum gave nothing but reasons not to vote for Scott. If McCollum had run a campaign based on lowering taxes, protecting and defending our rights, and increasing employment in FL, he would have won.

And this latest action of his is just going to sink his political fortunes even lower. McCollum lost largely because he felt he was entitled to the job and expected voters to vote for him without giving them any reasons to do so. He lost the election despite having the endorsement of just about every member of the Republican Old Guard here in FL, and now he wants to prop-up his profile by holding himself out as a king maker with the Old Guard who just went down with him. It’s a sad day indeed!

Agree.

uselogic Friday, August 27th at 8:00AM EDT (link)

The last McCollum ad I saw turned my stomach. “Compare Scott’s greed to my years of public service.” How Obama-esque to deride someone in private business as greedy compared to working in government. He lost me there after decades of support. Go retire on your public pension there, Bill.

McCollum sore in 2004

In 2004, McCollum lost to Mel Martinez in the FL Senate primary. He claimed that Martinez unfairly labeled as a RINO. Plenty of McCollum supporters were slow to get behind Martinez.

And it was Mel Martinez who turned out to be a RINO

Are primaries

rdelbov Thursday, August 26th at 2:45PM EDT (link)

nastier now? I have been shocked by how nasty the GOP primaries have been this year. I think of CA-TX-KY-TN-CO-AL-GA-FL statewide races. Have I left any out. Oh yes KS senate was nasty plus Iowa Gov. I forgot Nevada senate and Mercy the South Carolina GOP govenor primary.

Whatever happened to just running on your own views and without tearing down your foe?

I have raised this point several times here and I get the arguement back “politics is a contact sport and it always has been”. Not always and not in every state.

The senate race-on the GOP side at least-in AR was a polite affair.

I might add that sore losers in primaries range from Didier in WA to Vader Platt in Iowa to McCollum in FL. Its not an ideological issue so much as personal.

Alaska Senate primary seeems to be turning nasty too [nt]

by all accounts Murkowski mostly ignored Miller during the Primary.

It's all about power

cwilson (Diary) Thursday, August 26th at 3:37PM EDT (link)

Who will control the Republican Party for the next 20 years: the old guard establishment, or the Tea Party insurgency?

The dinosaur RINOs — and even basically conservative but happy and comfortable with the status quo incumbents, like McCollum — will not relinquish their grasp easily; look what happened after 1994. The newly elected firebrands were marginalized, frozen out, or co-opted — just like Trent Lott warned must be done to/with this new group of incoming legislators.

Those in the existing power structure will have to be crowbarred out of power, and dragged kicking and screaming away from their comfy sinecures.

This is just the “kicking and screaming” part.

Is Rick Scott the ideal candidate? No. His Columbia tenure makes it clear that there is something amiss with him. On the other hand, what is the alternative? If it shows nothing else, Scott’s win shows the power of money – lot’s of money. He is a poor candidate, with no track record on which to base an opinion, but lots of the green. The next multi-millionaire might be a Jon Corzine… Is it time for campaign finance reform? Anyhow Floridians, hold your nose(s) and vote for him.

to not give your money, or other support, to candidates who do not stand (run, work, live) on solid moral principles. If everyone did that, then we would have solid moral representatives at all levels of government. Of course, I know that is a dream world. But all real progress begins as a dream. We have to stop supporting people of questionable character just to gain some temporary political advantage. Maistre said “each people gets the government they deserve”. If we keep electing persons of questionable character (and sometimes not even questionable!), then we deserve them. Let us be moral voters, and then we will not have to worry about whether or not we have moral representation.

He does seem to suffer from that sense of entitlement which spending too much time sucking at the public teat, I mean serving the public in elective office, always seems to bring as a side effect.

He should endorse quietly, and go away if he can’t support enthusiastically (and that’s understandable, it was a vicious race). He could preserve some dignity that way, and perhaps even remain viable for some future office.

Those who have to be dragged out kicking and screaming are never invited back.
