So Erickson, What Would You Do?

I keep getting asked what I’d do instead of the Boehner plan.

Well, today I’m filling in for Neal Boortz again and I’ll tell you what I’d do.

Tune in live from 9:00 a.m. to 1 p.m. ET by clicking right here.

The phone number is 1-800-WSB-TALK.

Consider this an open thread.

    1) Republicans should defeat the Boehner bill.
    2) Republicans should defeat the Reid bill/butchered Boehner bill.
    3) Democrats will say Republicans have killed everything.
    4) Republicans will say not so fast – CCB has not been killed, just tabled, so it’s time to resurrect it.

The fly in the ointment is that there are enough establishment Republicans who’ll vote yes on anything and everything at this point that 2) is unlikely.

Here’s how the situation will play out over the weekend. Now that certain House Republicans have crippled their party and Speaker, Harry Reid will move on his bill.

Because the hour is late, he will need and get the seven Republicans he needs for cloture. Does anyone really expect the Maine girls, Murkowski, Crapo, and a few others won’t buckle? Of course they will.

Because Reid’s bill has Obama’s support, the Democrats in the House will all vote for Reid’s bill and moderate Republicans will fold. The bill will go to Obama and he will sign it. Thus, Obama gets a victory.

Congratulations, 2012 is now. Republicans will get all of the blame and certain people at Redstate will have contributed to that.

What you are describing is easily identifiable as a D plan not an R plan.

Harry Reid ahs declared that he will not accept a 6 month deal. Do you beleive that the final compromise will require a meaningfull second vote, or will it be a McConnell symbolic vote that the President can veto. It seems to me that this is the most important issue as absent a real second vote, there is no further chance to extract anything in the future. Can you please talk about this on your radio show? Thanks.

Much as I hate to admit it, currently it does look like the Boehner Bill is going to be defeated and the Reid Bill will be passed in the Senate. If the Republicans defeat the Reid Bill in the House, then they will be seen as bringing down the economy. If they support the Reid Bill, then it will be spun as the Democrats having saved sure disaster.

Given the alternative with the Reid Bill, it seems that the House should have passed the Boehner Bill. Yes, it is bad. But we have to keep the eye on the big picture, which is getting control of the WH and Congress. The GOP could take a huge hit on this, given the panic that Obama and the media have created.

I heard this morning that some of the tea party freshman want this to be the last deb ceiling raise or else they will vote no. So their answer is CC&B. I say that is a cop out. To control the deficit a few things need to happen, spending has to be cut on the discretionary side (cut). Math tells us this will not solve the deficit. Non-discretionary spending has to be controlled. This obviously means massive cuts in SS and Medicare. I really don’t think there is anything else that could fix the deficit.
Knowing that Dem’s would love for R’s to propose these cuts for the scare mongering they could gin up for 2012. If CC&B means non-discretionary gets cut then I would be for it, because other wise we will never stabilize the deficit. What CC&B means is taxes will go up, no matter how many restrictions or vote requirements you put on it. too many politicians will crater against cutting SS and vote to raise payroll taxes. By my estimate they have to double, for all income levels, as well as removing the cap for taxable income. By leaving it to a future congress to do these reforms is an absolute coward vote. Put forward the numbers that will make SS solvent for the long haul. The demographics make it a HUGE increase, that is the only chance you have of getting quality reforms in the system.

…the 5 to 20 republicans who are standing tall. These guys need our support.

They recognize that the Boehner/Reid/McConnell negotiations do absolutely nothing to cut current spending and are feeding you balogna that they will cut future spending. We all know the road to hell is paved with such promises.

What we need is cut ‘n cap. We need to cut PROGRAMS, not just discount their future spending abilities. Then we need to CAP spending NOW and tie it to a percentage of GDP and don’t give themselves an opt out to increase it every time their little heart desires.

As for their balanced budget amendment, it will be useless if they give themselves a 3/5s vote to raise spending or debt anytime their heart desires, or one that will force a balanced budget even if they have to increase taxes to do so! They could balance the budget TODAY without legitamizing their bad spending habits in a Constitutional amendment!

Stand tall you guys, and hold the line! We’ve got your back! November didn’t happen by accident.

It seems Boehner and co. have come up with a new bill that will pass and it sounds pretty good. I guess, as Rush said, I was “operating out of fear.”
