1. Joe the Plumber Will be at the RedState Gathering. Will You?

Talk about a guy in the right place at the right time. An American in fly over country just happened to get caught on tape asking a question about tax policy on small businesses to then candidate Barack Obama. Without a teleprompter to help him, Barack Obama spoke to the Ohio plumber off the cuff and from his heart.

Candidate Obama said, “When you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody.”

The question and the comeback made Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher a household name as “Joe the Plumber.”

He’s now a candidate for Congress in Ohio. He’ll be at the RedState Gathering in Jacksonville, FL. The Gathering takes place August 2nd to August 5th. Joe and I would love to see you there, but time is running out. We’re about a week away from winding down registration.

If you want to be a part of the RedState Gathering, go to http://www.redstategathering.com and register now.

I hope I’ll see you there.

2. Mr. Speaker, Tear Up This Farm Bill

During every election cycle, virtually every Republican candidate affirms his or her support for limited government, free markets, and balanced budgets. They all tout their conservative credentials on the flashy flag-waving issues of the day in an effort to ingratiate themselves with Republican primary voters. However, it is the “inside baseball” issues such as the farm bill that expose many of them as frauds.

Put simply, the farm bill is an anathema to free enterprise, limited government, and individual responsibility. The House version (H.R. 6083) authorizes $957 billion in spending over 10 years, 80% of which will go towards food stamps. Despite erroneous claims in the media regarding severe cuts to food stamps, this bill actually consummates the Obama-era baseline into our entitlement empire forever.

3. What’s in Romney’s Unreleased Tax Returns: He Overpaid His Taxes

Ben Domenech has been doing some pretty solid reporting in The Transom (you’ve subscribed, haven’t you?) about what might be in Mitt Romney’s taxes. He offers this morning the best and most informed theory.

Why most informed? Well, he talked to people who were familiar with the veep vetting process for McCain in 2008.

4. These Hands: Mitt Romney Uses Barack Obama’s Re-Marx

Oh nooooooozzzeeeeee!!!!

Mitt Romney must be a racist taking Barack Obama out of context.

Why? Well, he’s using Barack Obama’s in context re-Marx from Virginia in a new web ad that I feel comfortable saying will be coming to a television screen near you soon enough.

More of this please. Honestly, this is one of the first ads from the Romney camp I feel heads in a pitch perfect direction.

earlier today as he addressed our nation’s failure to adequately face mental illness. Krauthammer was a licensed psychiatrist so he is qualified to address these issues from a clinical perspective (not sure if he maintains his license today) but, he is very familiar with the lax turn we have taken in order to protect the civil rights of the mentally ill and suggests that we have gone too far.

I agree with that analysis. Having worked in mental health for twelve years in the eighties and nineties, out of a desire to be humane to the mentally ill, we have stripped our ability to intervene when someone exhibits bizarre behavior and may be a danger to self or others. Also, we lack the easy access we used to have to facilities for these kinds of situations.

As time goes on, I am sure we will find out that there were red flags everywhere that could have alerted people to danger ahead for this shooter, but, once again the signs were ignored or overlooked or minimized. We need to return to a system that takes a more active role in intervening when someone begins to exhibit signs of paranoia or psychosis. Better to put someone on a psych hold to be evaluated for 72 hours than risk these kinds of incidents.

How many can I give? Mrs. Tnfriend has a chronic mental illness that when she is sick makes her a danger to herself (suicide). We had to do a lot paperwork that allows me to make decisions if she is ill. Thankfully, the medication and therapy works.

glad you were able to get the help you need. I feel for families who cannot get the help they need — and there are many.

Part of the problem has been insurance companies not wanting to provide coverage for mental illness and part of that has to do with the stigma attached to this branch of medicine. Sad.

I am also lucky in that she hates being sick so she takes her medicine strictly. One of the shames is that often mental disease gives you the impression you are ok, not for Mrs. Tnfriend. We have a lot to be grateful for and my heart does break for those who can not or do not get the help they need. Thank you for your kind comment.

Not too revealing…but the person that knew him is shocked like everyone else.

It angers me that those on the Left tout gun control at every turn when something like this occurs, yet refuse to talk about the issue of mental illness in this country. This is the real issue, not gun control.

Your analysis of the problem is spot on.
