RedState Morning Briefing

August 23, 2012

Go to www.RedStateMB.com to get
the Morning Briefing every morning at no charge.

My apologies for the untimely delivery of what amounts to your mid-morning briefing today. Believe it or not, I actually do get up at 4 o’clock and send it out each morning. But for the first time in several years, I was so exhausted after a whirlwind several days of travel that it just didn’t happen. Sorry about that folks. In any event, here you go. I’ll be back on track tomorrow.

1. Equal Pay Icon Rallies for Obama. Attendees Unaware of Pay Disparity at White House.

Lilly Ledbetter is the namesake of the first bill signed by President Obama back in 2009, The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act. The purpose of this act was supposedly to make it easier for women in the workforce to file discrimination lawsuits and demand equal pay for equal work.

So pleased with Obama is Mrs. Ledbetter, that she decided to rally on his behalf recently in Colorado, along with DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz. Apparently Ledbetter neglected to mention that the same White House she’s rallying on behalf of has its own issues with pay equality. Luckily, Caleb Bonham of Revealing Politics was there to let them know.

2. Obama Supports Traffic Congestion

Through Obama’s truculent special interest campaign of division and derision, he is rapidly exhausting his check list of demographic groups. He’s already targeted women, Hispanics, gays, blue collar workers, and all sorts of minorities. Now he is going after the ‘commuter vote’ in northern Virginia.

3. FCC gets it wrong by pushing an agenda in its 706 Report

So, the FCC put out another report (the “706 report”) that just pushes an agenda rather than reporting the true facts about high speed Internet in America. Commissioners McDowell and Pai tell it like it is. We’ve also got Broadband for America telling the story. I’m not even worried about the details: the FCC is saying what they feel they must say to justify expanding government.

Behold as CREW, of the tolerant and liberty-minded left, pushes for censorship of Fox as political retribution.

We generally wait until movies come out on DVD or Netflix – haven’t paid to see a theater movie in about 10 years. I’ll have to drive 30 minutes to the next town to catch it – just wondering if this one might be worth it……

Any thoughts on the AL statewide proposed Constitutional Amendment election on September 18? My rep spoke at our local GOP meeting a couple of weeks ago and gave the “sky is falling” speech. She said without the transfer of funds, the state will have to make 17% cuts across the board with was met with a round of applause rather than the groans she expected. I’ve heard very little debate on the matter, but my sources tell me AEA is behind the amendment and that most conservatives think it simply kicks the can down the road.

Further, the rep confirmed that the state currently earmarks more of each tax dollar than any other state which complicates the budget, and that 85% of the funds are earmarked for education. At this point, several asked her why, since we had the majority, didn’t the legislature change this. No good answer.

Here’s the text of the amendment.

Shall the following Amendment be adopted to the Constitution of Alabama?
    Proposed Statewide Amendment
Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of Alabama of 1901, to provide adequate funding for the State General Fund budget, to prevent the mass release of prisoners from Alabama prisons, and to protect critical health services to Alabama children, elderly, and mothers by transferring funds from the Alabama Trust Fund to the State General Fund beginning with the state’s 2012-2013 fiscal year and concluding with the state’s 2014-2015 fiscal year; to provide a new procedure for distributions made from the Alabama Trust Fund beginning 2012-2013 fiscal year; to create a County and Municipal Government Capital Improvement Trust Fund advisory committee; and to provide further for distributions made from the County and Municipal Government Capital Improvement Trust Fund. (Proposed by Act No. 2012-490)

In eagerness to avoid talking about the economy, they appear to be going in that direction. And what should the GOP do? They need to pound home this very point. Everyone at the GOP convention should say that the Democratic economic policies are so bad they will say anything to distract the public. Hey, the truth works.

You guys have an inside track, don’t you? Contacts, etc., etc. Can someone please teach Republicans the meaning of the word “discretion”? If they want to drag out this melodrama…at the very least, can they do it in private?

    Huckabee, lineholder….

I really don’t want to say this about any Republican, but .. at this point the guy seems to be in it for himself, not for the country.

Trying to communicate on Twitter about this particular subject after what has occurred during the last few days…discussing how Huck should/should not be dealt with…

…in particular, an inflated sense of their indispensability to the conservative/pro-life movement. What they forget is that only One is indispensable – and His name is Jesus.

They both are in grave danger of the Matthew 14:30 consequence – without a rescue guarantee.

  • lineholder

I hope I’m wrong about this. I really do. But what I suspect is likely to happen if cooler, calmer, wiser heads do not prevail is that this will get blown out of proportion. Completely and totally out of proportion. To the point that it makes some of the “shut up” diaries that have been posted at RS in the last few days look like a love fest.

There are just too many political power brokers and would-be power brokers putting their sticky fingers into it.

I just hope wiser heads prevail.
