The Perfect Spot

You’ll have to forgive this being on the front page. For a variety of reasons, when I post the site processes automatically to the front. This is more diary stuff, but worth sharing.

Last fall at the RedState Gathering in Jacksonville, FL, I discovered Balcones Distilling, the wonderful distillery in Waco, Texas. Balcones Single Malt has become a staple of my personal, growing collection of bourbons and fine whiskies. I mentioned it on my radio show in Atlanta and several people told me about Table & Main, a small restaurant in Roswell, Georgia.

For those of you not familiar with the area, Roswell has become one of those places in America where it is impossible to find a bad meal. Like a mini-Charleston on Canton Street, the food is incredible. It just so happened that Table & Main had the whole line up of Balcones before anyone else in the metro Atlanta area.

The restaurant, which prepares local, seasonal, very fresh foods has a masterful bourbon collection too. Very well curated, there is always something new to try.

At some point last fall I was having a really bad week. Problems at work, feeling like the whole world was out to get me, I just decided I was going to show up at the restaurant unannounced. I didn’t want to do the “don’t you know who I am” thing. I showed up. The place was packed. But they found me a spot. I got a little table to myself tucked in the back of the restaurant.

I sat there for a few hours sampling the whole Balcones line and tasting the menu. Meatloaf meatballs in homemade brown sugar ketchup; hushpuppies; chicken fried steak made with veal — it was amazing food. To this day, it is a benchmark for me on relaxing. What made the food even better was the atmosphere. It was like being in my grandmother’s house. The house is old and small, but more cozy than small. There’s a great front porch and a side patio. The front bar area is packed with people, but conversation in the back of the restaurant is quieter. It really was the most relaxed I’ve been in a long time. The worries of the week disappeared.

I stayed far longer than I should have. The waiter got a great tip. I’ve loved that restaurant ever since.

So tonight I am really delighted to invite folks in the Atlanta area to join me at Table & Main. I’ll be broadcasting on the patio live from 5pm to 7pm ET. Hopefully, there will be no politics discussed. The restaurant is too awesome for partisanship. The restaurant and bar culture in Atlanta is growing. The food scene is incredible. I want to focus on that tonight. You guys, if you are in the area, are more than welcome to come by Canton Street in Roswell and find me on the patio.

When WSB starting having me do live broadcasts in the community, I insisted we do local restaurants and breweries — not the national chains — to highlight the great growth in local, unique food culture in Atlanta. All the spots we’ve been too have been terrific. Tonight’s show is at the location I requested. Dining at Table & Main is a remarkable, comfortable experience and I can’t wait. The show starts at 5pm and, as always, you can listen live tonight on the WSB live stream and call in at 1-800-WSB-TALK.
