Should House Republicans Start Thinking About Replacing Speaker Boehner?
By: Erick Erickson (Diary) | April 13th at 09:57 AM |
The short answer is no, but I have been getting a lot of emails and phone calls into my radio show asking if the GOP should boot Boehner. No, they shouldn’t. I think John Boehner is more conservative than Eric Cantor, who’d most likely replace him, but Boehner’s leadership has been crap lately. This deal that got us $38.5 billion in cuts, turns out to | Read More »
The Compromise
By: Erick Erickson (Diary) | April 11th at 04:46 AM |
Friday night the Republicans and Democrats reached a deal to avoid a government shutdown. The Republicans had promised $100 billion in cuts. They back pedaled to $61 billion in cuts. They have actually agreed to $38.5 billion in cuts, or about four days worth of spending by the federal government. Many of the conservatives who booed them for going from $100 billion to $61 billion | Read More »
Barack Obama Votes Present on the Budget
By: Erick Erickson (Diary) | April 6th at 09:10 AM |
It really is amazing to me that Barack Obama is digging in his heels on the fluff of his budget. He has chosen to vote present on his own Deficit Commission’s report. He has chosen to vote present on entitlement reform. Obama gives a great speech. He says we need entitlement reform. But he is not willing to offer up actual reform. Paul Ryan did | Read More »
I hope the left will be accurate in its criticism
By: Erick Erickson (Diary) | March 7th at 08:04 AM |
Many on the left are criticizing Speaker Boehner for the decision to keep Frank Buckles from lying in state in the Capitol Rotunda. This is not a partisan matter. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is joining John Boehner in the decision. I believe they are both wrong, but I do think it is both unfair and unwise to solely point the finger at John Boehner. | Read More »
Speaker Boehner & Harry Reid, Allow Frank Buckles Into the Rotunda
By: Erick Erickson (Diary) | March 4th at 02:23 PM |
[UPDATED:] Press reports this evening indicate that Senator Harry Reid is siding with John Boehner on this. The post has been updated to reflect that. I think Speaker John Boehner and Harry Reid are making a terrible mistake. The Speaker’s Office and the Senate Majority Leader are blocking a request that Frank Buckles be allowed to lie in state (or in honor as the case | Read More »
Might Someone Please Educate Fox News and the Rest of the Media?
By: Erick Erickson (Diary) | January 31st at 05:00 AM |
Fox News has an article on its website about John Boehner’s remarks on raising the debt ceiling. But in this objective report there is a great and dangerous falsehood. The article, which has no author attached to it, reports In order for the debt ceiling to rise, Congress must approve taking on more debt, which currently is growing by more than $4 billion per day. | Read More »
Today America’s Mother-In-Law Puts Down the Gavel
By: Erick Erickson (Diary) | January 5th at 05:00 AM |
Good morning. Congress convenes at noon today. The new congresscritters are getting sworn in. Look for the Senate Democrats to fail in their effort to gut the filibuster, but they’ll try nonetheless. I suspect the adults in the room, i.e. the Democrats who remember having a Republican President and Senate, will outwit and overrule Senator Udall (D-NM) and the howling gang of leftists from MSNBC | Read More »
Dear John Boehner and Eric Cantor
By: Erick Erickson (Diary) | November 17th at 03:23 PM |
Hi guys, Just a short note. If either of you support as Chairman of the Energy & Commerce Committee any of the damn fools who supported killing the incandescent lightbulb we’re going to have problems. That rules out Fred Upton. Sorry guys. I’m told you’ve been leaning toward him. But sorry. That may rule out some of the others too. But still — how many | Read More »
Perhaps the Most Ridiculous Thing to Come Out of Washington Since George McClellan
By: Erick Erickson (Diary) | September 22nd at 06:47 PM |
The House Republicans’ “Pledge to America” is out. A thrill will run up the leg of a few Chris Matthews’ types on the right. As Dan noted on Twitter, the Contract with America was 869 words and this is 21 pages. The Contract told you everything you needed to know about how a Republican Congress would be different from a Democrat Congress after 40 years | Read More »
Senate GOP Leadership Begins Setting The “Blame Conservatives” Narrative
By: Erick Erickson (Diary) | September 14th at 11:52 AM |
Here’s the situation on the ground: if the GOP makes significant gains in the United States Senate, it will be in spite of the best efforts of the Senate Republicans. The Senate GOP stood with Charlie Crist and conservatives stood with Marco Rubio. The Senate GOP stood with Arlen Specter and conservatives stood with Pat Toomey. The Senate GOP stood with Trey Grayson and conservatives | Read More »
Eric Cantor and John Boehner’s Premature Discharge Problem
By: Erick Erickson (Diary) | June 30th at 06:19 PM |
Eric Cantor and John Boehner are out today spinning furiously that their discharge petition is better than Steve King’s discharge petition. Except there is a fundamental flaw: they have a premature discharge problem. No, premature discharge is not a problem that can be cured with a pill. In order to have a discharge petition, the legislation to be discharged — that is forced to the | Read More »
Eric Cantor and John Boehner Don’t Really Want to Repeal Obamacare
By: Erick Erickson (Diary) | June 30th at 11:09 AM |
Well, it is official. Eric Cantor and John Boehner — particularly Eric Cantor — have decided they don’t need or want conservatives and, more troubling, do not have any intention of trying to win at the polls by forcing Democrat hands on Obamacare. Our leadership is behaving badly. Last week and on Monday I mentioned Rep. Steve King’s effort to repeal Obamacare and start over. | Read More »
The GOP Leaders Speak
By: Erick Erickson (Diary) | March 16th at 06:00 AM |
John Boehner and Mitch McConnell have an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal. They are making the case that Obamacare will raise costs and add more bureaucracy. It’s good closing sell to the American people on the issue. f there’s one thing the American people didn’t want, it was for us to make health care more bureaucratic and expensive. The Obama administration’s own scorekeeper at | Read More »
Is Boehner Helping Obama’s Second Coming?
By: Erick Erickson (Diary) | January 25th at 12:21 PM |
This is an interesting column by Jed Babbin. House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) popped a surprise on the Republican Conference in their January 20 meeting. President Obama had accepted his invitation to appear at their Baltimore retreat scheduled for January 29, two days after the State of the Union speech. According to several dismayed conservative members that attended the meeting and sought me out | Read More »
Leader Boehner Should Have Led
By: Erick Erickson (Diary) | November 2nd at 03:48 PM |
These guys keep shooting themselves in the foot. “This lady clearly has as agenda that’s different than most Republicans, she was out there promoting herself,” Boehner said, noting that he has encouraged all members of the GOP conference to support Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman. Mr. Boehner, with respect, this was blindly obvious to all of us outside the Beltway. You guys have spent $900,000.00 | Read More »
Dear John Boehner, Let Mitch Daniels Speak
By: Erick Erickson (Diary) | September 4th at 01:42 PM |
UPDATE: By the way, if you agree, call John Boehner today at (202) 225-4000 and suggest Mitch Daniels give the Republican Response. —————————— On Wednesday, September 9, 2009, Barack Obama will address a joint session of Congress to pitch his his healthcare plan to the American people using the ultimate bully pulpit, some free press, and Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden standing behind him clapping, | Read More »
Republicans Start Attacking Democrats’ “Dying With Dignity” Message
By: Erick Erickson (Diary) | July 24th at 02:49 PM |
The Republicans are engaging on this front. Good for them. Congressmen Boehner and McCotter released the following statement: Section 1233 of the House-drafted legislation encourages health care providers to provide their Medicare patients with counseling on ‘the use of artificially administered nutrition and hydration’ and other end of life treatments, and may place seniors in situations where they feel pressured to sign end of life | Read More »
A Tale of Two Leaders: Boehner v. McConnell
By: Erick Erickson (Diary) | June 28th at 11:25 AM |
There are some calls out there right now to boycott the NRCC over the 8 cap-and-trade votes cast by the GOP. Are we going to seriously punish Dave Reichert for voting for cap-and-trade when he barely won his district in 2008 and something like 70% of his district both supports cap-and-trade and thinks environmental issues are the most important issues in Congress? If so, don’t | Read More »
John Boehner Filibustering the Cap & Trade Bill
By: Erick Erickson (Diary) | June 26th at 06:27 PM |
Congressman John Boehner is on the floor of the House of Representatives engaging in a rare House filibuster. Boehner, given unlimited speaking time, is reading the text of Henry Waxman’s 300 page amendment to the Cap and Trade legislation. Here’s what I need you to do: Go here right now to get your Congressman’s phone number. Call your Congressman right now. Tell him to vote | Read More »
