Putting Saxby Chambliss, Mike Crapo, and Tom Coburn in Perspective
By: Erick Erickson (Diary) | July 22nd at 06:15 PM |
This is really sad and pathetic. I can only guess they have struck such a bad deal because they negotiated from a position of fear. You never get a good deal when you are negotiating because you are scared. The Senate Budget Committee is sending around an email pointing out some of the horrors of the Gang of Six’s gangrene plan. Consider this: Saxby Chambliss, | Read More »
The Gang of Six Becomes Five. Coburn Bolts. Chambliss Stays.
By: Erick Erickson (Diary) | May 18th at 05:00 AM |
The “Gang of Six”, which is the group in the Senate trying to come up with bipartisan tax increases and tax restructuring to implement the Deficit Commission’s plans, is collapsing. Late yesterday, Oklahoma Republican Tom Coburn bolted from the group because the Democrats are unwilling to deal with restructuring entitlements in their quest to raise taxes. Two Republicans remain, Mike Crapo of Idaho and Saxby | Read More »
On Ethanol, Conservatives Should Stand With Tom Coburn
By: Erick Erickson (Diary) | March 29th at 01:44 PM |
Senators Tom Coburn (R-OK) and Ben Cardin (D-MD) are out to get rid of the ethanol subsidy. The subsidy was put into the tax code to make it much harder to get rid of. How much harder? Well, according to Grover Norquist, if we get rid of the ethanol subsidy, we are raising taxes. I’ve written before how Grover Norquist gets lots of money from | Read More »
Thank You Tom Coburn
By: Erick Erickson (Diary) | December 16th at 05:00 AM |
Senator Tom Coburn has had an early Christmas gift handed to him in the form of the Ominous Omnibus. Coburn, perhaps best known for making fools of the big spenders in Washington, is doing it yet again. He has set up a database where you can dig through and find all the corruption, greed, and lunacy in the Omnibus. If this doesn’t pass by Saturday, | Read More »
Senate GOP Views Tea Party as “Destructive”. Still Seeks to Use Tom Coburn to Co-Opt New Conservative Senators.
By: Erick Erickson (Diary) | October 28th at 12:41 PM |
“The irony is that the new Senators the GOP is portraying as “problems” will be more reliable votes for the GOP than the Senators the GOP is touting.” This is a most interesting read from MSNBC.com, not actually affiliated with the television network of the same name and actively trying to come up with a new name so as not to be associated with Alan | Read More »
Marginalizing Jim DeMint: Are Senate Republicans Trying to Get Tom Coburn to Be Judas to Conservatives?
By: Erick Erickson (Diary) | October 14th at 09:31 AM |
As you know, Senate Republicans are more than a little unhappy with Jim DeMint. The Senate GOP will see an influx of DeMint backed candidates after November. Consequently, the Senate GOP has become more fixated with marginalized Jim DeMint than fighting Barack Obama. For perspective, Mitch McConnell won’t even campaign against or speak ill of Harry Reid to help Sharron Angle. But his minion are | Read More »
Watch the Senate for Democrat Hypocrisy at 11am
By: Erick Erickson (Diary) | March 9th at 10:45 AM |
I almost missed this. It happens around 11am. The Senate is going to vote on an amendment from Senator Tom Coburn. From an email friend: The amendment would require the Senate to be honest about its ridiculous spending and post the full cost of all PAYGO violations online for taxpayers to see. The Democrats have drafted a side-by-side amendment, to be voted on tomorrow as | Read More »
If A Senator Votes for Cloture, She is Voting to Pass Health Care
By: Erick Erickson (Diary) | November 20th at 01:00 AM |
There is a study out today that is damaging to the Democrats efforts to pass health care in the Senate. On Saturday, when constituents cannot contact their Senators’ offices because they’ll be closed, the United States Senate will vote on a cloture motion to debate the health care legislation. This is important — a vote in favor of cloture on the motion to proceed (a | Read More »
Coburn Demands Reid Read The Bill
By: Erick Erickson (Diary) | November 16th at 08:18 PM |
Under the unique rules of the United States Senate, a member of the body may insist legislation actually be read before a vote is cast on the legislation. After threatening to do that, Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK) has now confirmed the health care bill must be read. Republicans will also try to filibuster the health care legislation. The Democrats will need 60 votes to proceed, | Read More »

Conservatives About To Get Their Butts Handed To Them in Senate Thanks to Mitch McConnell
By: Erick Erickson (Diary) | January 9th at 07:53 AM |
On Sunday, the Senate will vote on the lands bill. There is no unanimous consent relating to the bill because Senator Tom Coburn objected. But without Mitch McConnell standing up for Coburn, Harry Reid will be able to blame Coburn for the Sunday vote, which is the whole strategy, to isolate him and make him the enemy of the Senate Club. In fact, Mitch McConnell | Read More »
