The company I work for is small - there’s 12 employees, including the owner.

Last week, we were 20 on staff.

I work for a contractor to The Broward County School Board and Palm Beach County School Board (we handle the surveillance systems and access controls).   We’ve already lost about half the staff to a layoff….. that was last week….. before this insanity reared it’s head.

My boss was out of the office all day and didn’t know about the tax increase until I told him this afternoon.  He thought I was kidding….. but only for about two or three seconds.

I wonder how many of us will be left when this takes effect…….. if the company still exists.

Thank you Charlie Crist and the rest of the State Legislature for screwing the pooch on just about every aspect of the Florida financial world.

Things are gonna get a might ugly down here.

A Kent man who announced Friday that he intended to carry a pistol into a West Seattle community center to trigger a lawsuit challenging Seattle’s ban on guns in public spaces did just that Saturday, and was promptly asked to leave.

Bob Warden, 44, announced his intentions in an e-mail Friday morning to media as well as to the city of Seattle, including the police and city attorney.
On Saturday, Warden walked into the Southwest Community Center at 2801 SW Thistle Street with a Glock-27 .40-caliber sub-compact pistol under a black jacket in a holster strap over his left shoulder. Parks Department employee Lisa Harrison asked him to leave, and he did.

“I’m not here as a Second Amendment activist,” Warden said. “I’m here as a citizen who believes in the rule of law.”

1.  What exactly does a ‘carbon credit’ provide a corporation or individual, as no goods or services are given in return (the good will is at best debatable) ?

2.  Who is the end recipient of the money changing hands to buy these ‘carbon credits’ ?  (Answer to this question:  The main recipient is a corporation who’s founder and CEO happens to be on the cover of the current Costco Connection magazine.  Add the investors and associates in this corporation as well and you’ve got the ‘wow’ factor quite nicely ).

3.  …….. and how does money changing hands for no goods or services in return to anyone do anything towards correcting a problem that doesn’t exist on the claimed level ?

4.  A single volcanic eruption about the size of what occurred with Mt. St. Helens sends more toxins and problematic material into the Earth’s atmosphere at once than all man-made emissions ever produced.

5.  When you really think on what’s involved, ‘carbon credit’ is just a new way to define ‘extortion’.

Abdullah pulls out of Afghan run-off election.

Opposition candidate Abdullah Abdullah announced on Sunday that he was pulling out of this week’s run-off presidential election in Afghanistan.

“The decision which I am going to announce was not an easy one. It was a decision that I have taken after wide-ranging consultations, with the people of Afghanistan, my supporters and influential leaders,” Abdullah told supporters.

“In protest against the misconduct of the government and the Independent Election Commission (IEC), I will not participate in the election,” he added.

Abdullah’s decision is set to plunge Afghanistan into further uncertainty with the country in political limbo since the first round of voting on August 20, which was tainted by widespread vote-rigging.

Teenage girls wanting to join violent male gangs are being forced into having sex and ferrying guns, knives and drugs, police and charities have found.

The girls, some as young as 13, want to join gangs to raise their own profile or to seek protection. Often they are swayed by the status given to the senior members of the gang.

When they first join they are told they must have sex with one member of the gang — and then find several of the gang waiting for them.

What has shocked welfare workers is that the girls accept the situation as normal and do not appreciate that they are being violated.

A chief investigator has just been apointed to look into the somewhat unusual death of Mr. Timothy Hampton, investigative nuclear materials scientist.

Officer Barbrady of The South Park Colorado Police Department has arrived in Vienna and immediately went to work.  Thirty minutes later, he met a rather large gathering of international press.

“Good afternoon.  On investigating Mr. Hampton’s unfortunate fall and demise in an alarmed-access stairway from the 17th floor to the 5th, the first thing I noticed is the alarm never rang anywhere.  There was a bag over Mr. Hampton’s head tied by a wire, so I removed that and threw it out so I could compare Mr. Hampton’s face with his driver’s license for identification.  It was him.

Next, I untied Mr. Hampton’s hands from behind his back, in order to make things easier for the coroner’s office.  What a coincidence, his hands were tied with the same type of wire as was the bag.

Nicaragua court backs re-election.

The Nicaraguan Supreme Court has lifted a constitutional ban on re-election, clearing the way for President Daniel Ortega to run again in 2011 elections.

The court’s decision followed an appeal by Mr Ortega and a group of mayors.  In July, Mr Ortega said publically he favoured allowing people the right to seek consecutive terms.

The issue of presidential term limits is controversial across Latin America, where several nations have moved to allow consecutive terms in office.  The argument in favour is that, in the modern world, continuity over more than four years is needed if effective policies for change are to be enacted.  But ending term limits is a divisive subject in a region which saw long-running military dictatorships hold sway for much of the 20th Century.

Leftist Latin American leaders have agreed on the creation of a regional currency to scale back on the use of the US dollar as well as economic sanctions against Honduran coup leaders.

Nine countries of ALBA, a leftist bloc conceived by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, met Friday in Bolivia where they vowed to press ahead with a new currency for intra-regional trade to replace the US dollar.

“The document is approved,” said Bolivia’s President Evo Morales, who is hosting the summit.

The new currency, named the Sucre after Jose Antonio de Sucre, who fought for independence from Spain alongside Venezuelan hero Simon Bolivar in the early 19th century, will be rolled out beginning in 2010 in a non-paper form.

Professor Ada Yonath, who received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry last week, wasted no time in using her newly found fame to air her political views. In an interview Saturday on Army Radio station (Galei Tzahal) she opined that Israel should release all the terrorists that are incarcerated in its jails.

“We need to think of ways that people will not have motivation to go and kill and be killed,” Yonath said. “It is is not just a political matter. These people are people who usually do not have a horizon, they have no hope, they have no reason to want to live and therefore they do not care that others will not live, and at the same time maybe they will also go to heaven and receive some rewards. This does not happen to people who have options for life, who have a life in which they at least have the possibility of hope. We can change that.”

Poland’s President Lech Kaczynski on Saturday signed the European Union’s reforming Lisbon Treaty at a ceremony, leaving his ultra-eurosceptic Czech counterpart Vaclav Klaus as the only holdout.

“The fact that the Irish people changed their minds meant the revival of the treaty, and there are no longer any obstacles to its ratification,” Kaczynski said before signing.

“Today is a very important day in the history of Poland and the European Union,” he added, as senior EU leaders looked on.

No mention at all of a very large possibility why Poland’s president finally signed the treaty his nation’s government ratified 18 months previous………

It’s a fair assumption that many months can go by for a nation - that has somewhat free elections - to sign a treaty that was ratified…. dust settling and all that.  Poland is a deeply religious nation and her people are steadfast in their beliefs.  The Polish president seems to have many issues with the treaty, including loss of national sovereignty (so why did you sign it then ?) and other things including The Lisbon Agreement allowing marriages across all 564 genders of humanity.

So why sign it now ?  Vass ees mit der pen onna zee paypur ?

One might tend to consider the possibility that something had to be done, because Poland and her people have realized they’ve been abandoned by a certain nation’s government (but in no way abandoned by that certain nation’s people) in matters of support and especially defense.  Gee, what certain nation’s government could I be talking about ?

All that remains for The Lisbon Agreement to be fully in force and mandatory for all 27 European Union nations, is the signature of Czechoslovakia’s president (Vaclav Klaus)….. and he has a few very good reasons for not signing the treaty.

Klaus, a staunch eurosceptic who refuses to fly the EU flag at his residence, has repeatedly refused to sign the treaty, and on Friday imposed a new condition, seeking an opt-out on a key element, the Charter of Fundamental Rights.

I have a feeling that if and when this Lisbon agreement is actually in force, three things may happen quite quickly….. One.  Russia ramps up their “defensive” capabilities to a comparable level they had during The Cold War (which they seem to be doing anyway)……. Two.  “That certain nation’s government” I mentioned before might just back off The European Union entirely, letting them fend for themselves in matters of defense……. Three.  If “Two” happens, The EU may unpeg from “that certain nation’s government’s” currency almost overnight.

If I can think of this scenario, you can bet that people much more adept within the international political spectrum had it in mind long before I thought about it.

The Taliban have claimed responsibility for a massive suicide car bomb that targeted the Indian embassy in Kabul yesterday, killing 17 people and injuring another 63, most of them civilians.

A new American Jewish Committee (AJC) survey of American Jews shows that for the first time, a majority of them would support a U.S military strike against Iran, and an even larger majority would support such a move by Israel.

Known fact:  Just over 78% of American Jews voted for “him” in November 2008.
