Australian authorities were attempting to stabilise a stranded Chinese coal carrier which is threatening to break up on the Great Barrier Reef and spill more oil into the pristine waters.
The Shen Neng 1 ran aground on Saturday when it hit a shoal off the eastern state of Queensland at full speed, rupturing a fuel tank and causing a three-kilometre (almost two mile) long slick on the World Heritage site.

Queensland Premier Anna Bligh said salvage teams were on board and assessing how they might be able to refloat the carrier.

Bligh said the vessel was in a restricted zone of the Great Barrier Reef which was “totally off limits” to shipping and the ship’s Chinese owners could be fined up to one million US dollars (around 920,000 US) and the captain handed a 250,000 dollar penalty.

Australia, Saturday, April 3rd, approximately 5pm local time….. A Chinese tanker with 975 metric tons of oil runs aground on The Great Barrier Reef…….
Australia, Monday April 5th, approximately 1:30am…….. So far, the spill is over 3 kilometers long and wider than a soccer field.
The ME-dia, Green-Commie-Peace, and the rest, including his royal heinie-arse Algore are silent………. Not a sound to be heard, not a discouraging word……… The Aussies seem to be on it though.
Maritime authorities are racing to disperse an oil spill stretching three kilometres along the Great Barrier Reef.
The Chinese-owned, 230 metre-long bulk coal carrier Shen Neng 1, ran aground about 70 kilometres east of Great Keppel Island shortly after 5pm on Saturday, sparking a national oil spill response plan.
A second dose of chemical dispersants was to be sprayed over the spill, which measures 3000 metres by 100 metres, Maritime Safety Queensland has confirmed.

You have a point about the coverage differences that the MSM makes, but this event is now starting to be covered and there is something to be said for the business of the news business and how newsrooms are not as well staffed as they once were on weekend.

Unless you count the small peninsula on the north coast of Queensland, Queensland on the northeast coast of Australia doesn’t have a west coast and the Great Barrier Reef runs along its east coast.

One thing in reading the article, this collision occurred late Saturday night and they do roll up the sidewalks in Cains Saturday afternoon, so I’m not surprised that news coverage is scant. Due to very strong union rules in Australia, and “newsies” are unionized, getting anything covered on the weekend is pretty darn hard. Monday morning will be another matter.

Achance (Diary) Sunday, April 4th at 1:21PM EDT (link)975 tons of oil is probably from its fuel tanks. With a ship like this one, the fuel oil would be nasty, heavy stuff, not much refined, so it won’t evaporate like a lighter diesel.
Somebody had a good case of rectocranialitis to hit a marked reef with a boat like that; thirteen miles off the shipping channel. Any former British territory is going to be well-mapped for at least a hundred years or more, so that isn’t an excuse. There are, however, still places in the Pacific that are very poorly mapped.
Your point is well taken though, if it happened in US waters, all the Greenies and their media lap dogs would be howling. They raised Hell here when a bulk carrier broke up out in the Aleutians and spilled thousands of tons of soybeans. ‘Course it too spilled several hundred tons of fuel as well.

The Alaska tankers are purpose made double hull tankers with the latest, greatest everything and are hideously expensive. I don’t know what they use to bring oil to Hawaii or to service the military but they have to be American bottoms with American crews.
