U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will attend the second round of direct peace talks between Binyamin Netanyahu and Mahmoud Abbas. The talks are scheduled to be held next Tuesday, September 14, at the Sinai resort town of Sharm El-Sheikh.

After the talks between the Israeli prime minister and PA chairman, Clinton will head to Jerusalem for further discussions the following day, a State Department official said. Clinton will be joined in the negotiations by U.S. Special Envoy for Middle East Peace George Mitchell.

Palestinian Authority chairman Mahmoud Abbas declared during a visit to Libya that if he is pressured on key issues at the direct talks, such as borders and refugees, he will not accept it and “will take his bags and leave,” Palestinian newspaper Al Quds reported on Monday.

“I will not be pressured into signing anything or taking even one concession with relation to all the aggressive attitudes around me,” Abbas reportedly told the east Jerusalem newspaper.

Over the weekend [chief Palestinian negotiator] Erekat said that Israel and the Palestinian Authority have agreed on the “core issues” that will be discussed during their direct talks.

“We have reached agreement on the agenda of the direct talks,” Erekat said. “We have also reached agreement on a timeline for a temporary framework agreement – 12 months.”

Erekat said that the final-status issues that the sides have agreed to discuss during this period include Jerusalem, borders, refugees, settlements, water, security and prisoners held in Israeli jails.

As I read this, it means that “core issues” are:
- Israel has to give up half of Jerusalem.
- Israel has to return to the 1967 borders.
- Israel has to accept all so-called refugees.
- Israel has to end and dismantle all settlements.
- Israel has to open its borders for water and no doubt other goods to flow.
- Israel has to open its borders so as not to harass visitors and workers.
- Israel has to release all Palestinian prisoners.

Not included as core issues would be minor things like:
- Ending rockets attacks on Israel.
- Ending suicide bombings in Israel.
- Ending kidnappings and murders of Israelis.
- Recognizing Israel’s right to exist (and be left alone).

Peace partners indeed.

The Palestinian Authority charged that holding international meetings anywhere in Jerusalem is a “provocation” because most of the world does not recognize it as Israel’s capital.

The official Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) WAFA news agency reported Sunday its “deep concern because Israel opened the door to the World Jewish Congress to hold its 14th meeting in occupied Jerusalem [with] the participation of more than 200 representatives of Jewish groups in the world.”

The actual location of the convention was the David Citadel Hotel, which is within the limits of Jerusalem that were recognized by the United Nations after the 1949 armistice that officially ended the War of Independence.

The Egyptian Newspaper Al Youm Al Sabeh reports: In a communication to the Attorney General of Egypt, Dr. Yasser Najib Abdel Mabboud, has accused Dr. Mohamed El-Baradei, former Director General of International Atomic Energy Agency and a candidate in the Egyptian presidential elections, of receiving funds exceeding $7 million (US) from Iran’s leadership as support for ‘political reform in Egypt’.

Abdul Mabboud , a candidate of the National Party and who like El Baradei is also running for the Egyptian Presidential election, was informed of the Iranian leadership’s willingness to support ElBaradei financially via an Arab businessman living in Europe. The check in the amount of $ 7 million is said to be meant to cover the financial costs of the election campaign and the activities of the Front For Change.

The second shooting attack took place last Wednesday evening on Route 60 between the Rimonim Junction and the Jewish community of Kochav HaShachar in the Binyamin region of Samaria. Terrorists shot the vehicle in which Rabbi Moshe and Shira Moreno, residents of the Jordan Rift Valley, were driving.

According to the reports by PA officials, the six terrorists who have been arrested in connection with the attacks are all members of Hamas’ Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades.

IDF: Strike response to rocket fire.

The army confirmed operations in Gaza late Thursday, saying that IDF aircraft operating in cooperation with the Shin Bet security service struck terror targets in the northern Gaza Strip as well as a smuggling tunnel in southern Gaza. The targets were hit accurately, the army said.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is scheduled to tour south Lebanon, just a few kilometers from the border with Israel, Iranian sources told the al-Khaleej newspaper on Sunday.
