Redistricting wars: why the Democrats out-foxed us [CLOSED AND ANNOTATED.]

Every ten years, after the U.S. Census releases its latest population reports, most of the 50 states begin the complicated process of drawing new election districts…

[This was a fascinating article... when Steven Malagna wrote it for City Journal.  I am closing this diary and turning off the account that produced it; I will be happy to turn it back on if it turns out that 'floridarepublican' is actually Steven.]

[In the meantime: DO NOT DO THIS.]

Now I now where the term gerrymandering comes from- I never knew. This sentence at the end “…a method by which politicians choose their own voters” seems to describe the very antithesis of the VRA and we’re supposed to have a representative government in our county.

The VRA has outlived it’s original intent and should be ruled unconstitutional in it’s entirety, not just Sec. 5. National Review had a great article on this and said that with our mobile society, the former districts of ethnic makeup don’t exist much anymore.

Nothing is ‘independent’ anymore…. everything is Partisan and admitting this must be step #1

Democrats always want the courts to give them more representation, when they can not win it in an election. They have been pulling this crap for many years.

Separate the issue of redistricting from the Voting Rights Act, as it was originally meant to be, and instead create new, fairer, clearer and simpler rules for redistricting based on population equality, compactness, and geographical, cultural or administrative boundaries. I support the Voting Rights Act, with the exception of preclearance, but I believe that its application to redistricting is an example of judicial activism.

    Two points, if I may:

    1. You should submit this to one of the mainstream conservative websites..National Review, Weekly Standard, etc..it merits a wider distribution.

2, The VRA is an abomination, and likely unconstitutional from the get-go. It divides us along racial preferences, and assumes that race is the key criteria in elections. This is r the Democrat Party’s worldview, it is not ours, and was not tnhat of the Founding Fathers. ..If we win the WH, and Senate and House, we should move to repeal it.

Look, the whole left cabal, Dems, MSM, is goign to scream bloody murder at ANY legislation we try and pass, so we might as well get it all over at once..
