Endangered Livestock

In what will truly sound the death-knell for any political ambitions I may have ever had, Amy Miller (h/t) got me thinking about something in a Twitter conversation.

First, let’s face it, almost everybody hates the idea of whale hunting.  These are “beautiful” and “majestic” creatures.  God’s creatures.  Hunting them on the high seas brings horrific images to the minds of so many people, promulgated by liberal media and education groups.  That is why Discovery Networks is now airing is “Whale Wars” program.

I hate this program.  I don’t like the idea of hunting endangered species.  I’d prefer if Japan, Iceland and Norway would just knock it off until whale populations increase to a more sustainable level.  These Whale Wars guys, though, are just pirates.  They block the path of registered vessels and board them with the intent of disrupting legal commerce or scientific research.  That’s piracy, pure and simple, and these idiots should be dealt with just like the pirates in Somalia, not lionized with their own television show.

Which is, in part, why I’ve thought about this so much.  Most conservatives probably won’t like it, but it just makes sense.  Still, it wasn’t until last night that I thought seriously about Whale Farming.

Think about it: Under the auspices of protecting various whale species, a few are captured in the wild or bred from existing aquarium stocks and brought to a deep Norwegian fjord or Japanese inlet with its entrance blocked in order to breed more in captivity.  They are fed plankton (or fish, depending on the species) that is farmed in deep saltwater ponds nearby.

Now, this conservation effort must be paid-for.  After all, blocking off a fjord and dredging those ponds is going to be expensive.  Private charity just isn’t going to cover it.  So, while much of the pod is released into the wild, several are culled for the purpose of selling to those who want them.

This is the market incentive that liberals (and even a lot of conservatives) can’t stand:  Taking an endangered species and saving it by farming it.  It’s a free-market solution to an international problem, it creates jobs, and were there not so many laws and regulations to prevent it, our modern society could reproduce it.  We already do it on an extremely limited basis at aquariums.  Ted Turner is doing something similar with his Montana Grill bison herd.

That some people find the idea distasteful is their problem.  We’re saving the whales here!  Get those guys at PETA and Greenpeace out of the way!  We’ve got to save these beautiful, majestic and apparently tasty animals!

a snob appeal for some consumers of the meat and the desire of some whalers to keep in a business that went out with corset stays and whale oil in lamps. Even the Arctic aboriginal people who insist on hunting them for “cultural” reasons are really only doing it to defy national governments; they’re happier at Pizza Hut too.

I’m not one of the “Free Willy” types; I’ve seen what killer whales do to seals, but man doesn’t need to harvest the animals and the animals don’t really do man much harm. I say much because a killer whale is a much better salmon fisherman than most men, so if there are killer whales around, pick up your lines and go somewhere else. The only big whales I’ve ever dealt with are humbacks and they’re simply oblivious to man. They do what they do and they don’t care about human presence. Maybe they once did when they were hunted, but these days, they’ll just swim alongside your boat oblivious to you; course that’s a little scary when your boat is half the size of the whale.

Anyway, nobody needs to hunt whales or to eat whales. Maybe one day if there are population surpluses, some controlled harvest might be appropriate, but these days the best thing is to just enjoy their presence and leave them alone.

And just for the record, we were out fishing today and saw a bunch of both humpbacks and orcas.

      …anything in particular.

Cows, chickens, hogs and all those other animals could be set free. We don’t need to eat them.

But we do eat them. I’m not particularly fond of the idea of eating octopus, and I don’t think we need to be fishing for those creatures. Most of my friends love calamari… Gag…

I said particularly that most conservatives wouldn’t like the idea. That’s because we’ve been programmed for decades to dislike whaling. However, raising whales in an agricultural setting would give people an economic incentive to save the species.

Just because you don’t like the idea of eating them doesn’t mean I am wrong.

seal hunt to be the same. While I would not like to whack a baby harp seal on the head for it’s fur there are many families in Newfoundland and Greenland who make a significant portion of their yearly income from it. There is no shortage of Harp seals, in fact, they are a strain on the near extinct east coast cod fisheries. They are no different than deer, elk or moose, the population has to be controlled. The fisheries were raped by ourselves to an extent but mostly by Portuguese and Spanish factory ships operating because of gutless Canadian governments. Newfies have lost all their traditional ways to make a living between the fishery debacle and PETA. I bet more than a few Newfies would like to use their oars on a a few PETA members.

“I bet more than a few Newfies would like to use their oars on a a few PETA members.”

They’re not alone in the world. ;)

There……. Somebody had to say it and right now I’m on edge enough that I elected myself to do so.

Oh…. and by the way….. Nuke The Whales !

      I jest because I care.

Did you happen to catch Conan O’Brien the other night, when he predicted Youtube, Twitter, and Facebook would merge into one super time-wasting website called You-Twit-Face.
