Incredibly, government executives dare to hired trusted friends

Today, in this country’s supposed “newspaper of record”, and in the premium above the fold, upper left-hand corner, spot, no less, The New York Times saw fit to print the “news” that Alaska’s Governor has hired people she has known and trusted for many years to fill jobs in state government.

Shocking isn’t it?

There is more: Some of these friends of Sarah (F.O.S.) made less money in the private sector than in their new government jobs!

Unbelievable!

Read further if you are of a strong constitution and own a good supply of Mylanta:

Gov. Sarah Palin lives by the maxim that all politics is local, not to mention personal.

So when there was a vacancy at the top of the State Division of Agriculture, she appointed a high school classmate, Franci Havemeister, to the $95,000-a-year directorship. A former real estate agent, Ms. Havemeister cited her childhood love of cows as a qualification for running the roughly $2 million agency.

Ms. Havemeister was one of at least five schoolmates Ms. Palin hired, often at salaries far exceeding their private sector wages.

When Ms. Palin had to cut her first state budget, she avoided the legion of frustrated legislators and mayors. Instead, she huddled with her budget director and her husband, Todd, an oil field worker who is not a state employee, and vetoed millions of dollars of legislative projects.

Where to begin with this latest: pedestrian, cliché-filled mainstream media example of “Casablanca” (Shocked at gambling in the casino) style, feigned outrage at the ordinary, (what passes for) journalism.

Let’s start, Mssrs. Becker, Goodman and Powell of the exponentially decreasing in circulation daily, with whether you ever heard of an F.O.B.?

That was and is the acronym ascribed to close friends of former president Bill Clinton. You know, the guy you had a love affair with before The One appeared. These FOBs were hired by and consulted with Bill Clinton from Day One of his first term as Governor of the small State of Arkansas through the completion of his second term as POTUS.

Yes, Webb Hubble and others plead guilty for crimes concerning Whitewater and the B. object of the preposition F.O. was impeached, but he left office with a 60+% approval rating and most agree his successes and failures were due to the man he looked at in the mirror each day, and not his choice of employees.

The main stream media and their liberal allies in the Democrat Party cared not a whit what crooks Bill Clinton hired (or pardoned, just as they care not a whit that Obama’s butt was parked in a Hate Whitey America Church for twenty years while he cavorted with at least one unrepentant terrorist while a felon got him a mansion via the aide of a F.O.H. (Friend of Saddam Hussein).

[I would analogize Palin’s hires with Obama’s, but he never hired anyone, at least no one they are willing to be seen outside church basements. Nor can we meet any of his legal clients or members of organized communities.]

You state a maxim you suppose Palin lives by of the Tip O’Neil variety (without attribution I might add), but leave out other more instructive maxims she lives by, like her Christian faith and her record of rooting out corruption.

And word is that voters didn’t complain that she discussed her vetoes with her husband.

The shocking story of high school alumni in Wasilla continues:

Ms. Palin walks the national stage as a small-town foe of “good old boy” politics and a champion of ethics reform. The charismatic 44-year-old governor draws enthusiastic audiences and high approval ratings.

And as the Republican vice-presidential nominee, she points to her management experience while deriding her Democratic rivals, Senators Barack Obama and Joseph R. Biden Jr., as speechmakers who never have run anything.

But an examination of her swift rise and record as mayor of Wasilla and then governor finds that her visceral style and penchant for attacking critics — she sometimes calls local opponents “haters” — contrasts with her carefully crafted public image.

An examination of record shows the Alaskan tundra littered with the remains of moose and corrupt good ole boy systems of democrats and republicans, all blown asunder by our 21st Century Annie Oakley. (I suspect the Moose was not torn asunder given her accuracy with firearms and the more sympathetic a victim is Bullwinkle than Boris Badenovs.]
Liberals in the media and the Democratic Party always get it wrong with its “carefully crafted image” projections. It wasn’t just about sex, and words and experience matters. It’s about character, and the KIND of friends certain characters pick.

Palin’s approval rating is 80% with ZERO F.O.S. indictments.
And yes, some people are “haters” (look around the pressroom) and she attacks critics and will continue to do so.

Where is Claude Rains when you need him after a shock?

Just when I think that the mainstream media can’t sink any lower in their destruction of journalistic standards, they continue to prove me wrong.

and groundbreaking, at that! Now thats prize worthy journalism if I ever saw it!

These paper pulp rags belong in fodder troughs to be fed upon only by those lefty’s that are so simple and feeble they can’t make up their own minds because they hav’nt got one.

…this story goes out to other struggling on-life-support papers who run it, again above the fold. My paper the Tampa Tribune, ran a different story from another service, but the same theme.

I wonder how they write these. Do they make a numbered list and then add “still” “yet” “nevertheless” “however”but” and repeat as needed, and then end with “it’s yet to be seen?”

From the conversations of the Sunday morning talk shows the plan may be to lay off Sarah Palin, and attack John McCain for having friends who had done work as a lobbyist.

Fred Thompson had done work as a lobbyist. So what? What is more important is to look at how much more comfortable the Washington insiders are going to feel about doing business as usual with Pres. Obama than they would with Pres. McCain.

and McCain shows that they don’t get what they want.

That a talented person is hired and was once was a lobbyist is immaterial. Much more so that one is friends with lobbyists.

We don’t have to wonder how elected people are influenced. We can look at their record.

Todd Palin quit his 17 year union oilfield job on the North Slope rather than give the appearance of impropriety when Sarah go elected.

Barack’s election, by contrast, was the best thing that ever happened to Michelle’s career at the hospital, who doubled her salary in a year. And a few earmarks were steered the hospital’s way, too, although I’m sure it was pure coincidence.

When the Clintons came to the White House they fired heads of departments and replaced them with trusted contributors and lifelong friends. And on his way out of the White House Clinton pardoned major contributors(tax evaders) and family criminals. What’s good for the Dems is unethical and possibly illegal for the GOP, if they can get a liberal group to bring suit.

I liked the quote about how Todd and her budget director sat down and vetoed spending. Isn’t that right from the movie “Dave”? Remember when he calls his buddy the small business owner (like Todd?) to make sense of the federal budget? It didn’t take them long to apply common sense to the budget to cut waste.

    I guess it isn’t cool when it’s a Republican.

    Three points about Franci Havemeister:

First, Alaska does not have a separate “Department of Agriculture,” like many states, but only a “Division” of agriculture beneath the Department of Natural Resources. So Ms. Havemeister’s appointment isn’t as prestigious as some might imagine.

Second, I freely admit that I have no idea what the head of the Division of Agriculture actually does. Mrs. Havemeister does have experience with agriculture, since she and her husband own a dairy farm, but her main professional experience seems to be as a real estate agent.

Third, despite what the NYT says about her appointment, Sarah Palin did not choose her to lead the Division of Agriculture. According to this article from the NASDA, Natural Resources Commissioner Tom Irwin, not Governor Palin, appointed Havemeister to her position:

Natural Resources Commissioner Tom Irwin appointed Franci A. Havemeister Director of the State Divsion of Agriculture on August 1, 2007.

Just to be extra careful, let’s see what the Alaska Department of Natural Resources has to say. This is a press release concerning Havemeister’s appointment:

Department of Natural Resources Commissioner Tom Irwin announced the appointment of Franci Havemeister as the Director of the Division of Agriculture. “I am impressed with her vision for the agriculture industry, the desire to get the entire agriculture community working together and the opportunity to develop great working relations between the administration, Board of Agriculture (BAC), agriculture community and DNR,” said Irwin.

Once again, Havemeister’s appointment is attributed directly to Irwin, not Governor Palin. There is no indication that Palin had anything to do with it. Now, one might infer that Gov. Palin was instrumental in securing this appointment. Indeed, that seems to be what the NYT has done. But is there any hard evidence that this is true? Not that I have found. So, there you have it. Another one bites the dust.

w/o the OK of the Office of the Governor. Usually it is the head of Boards and Commissions, an office under the Governor, but sometimes it is the Governor him/herself. A commissioner does get to pick his/her directors, but the OOTG vetts them all.

The director of the division of agriculture has long been a nothing job and in fact was paid less than other division directors until recently. There is a vestigial dairy industry in the Matanuska Valley. Only since the Pipeline Era boom has shipping been fast and cheap enough to import milk. When I first came to Alaska in ’74 both beer and soda were much cheaper than the local brand Matanuska Maid. Like most legacy Alaska businesses Mat Maid was heavily unionized, highly politicized, and VERY high cost. It failed in the face of competition from milk imported from WA and elsewhere once somewhat reasonable shipping became available.

The State rescued it from bankruptcy but it continued its downward spiral, mostly under the weight of a sweetheart deal with the Teamsters. Early in the Murkowski Administration, I was approached by the then-director of agriculture to consider ways to invalidate the labor agreements or get control of them firmly under the central administration. That director got promoted, I had other things to do, and I never thought about it again.

Fast forward to the early days of the Palin Administration and the losses from the State-owned vestiges of Mat Maid became unsustainable and the Board moved to close the last creamery. This would have left the remaining dairies with no place to process their milk. Gov. Palin stepped in and bought some time and put some more State money in the operation. She also replaced the whole board and a new director was appointed amid a good bit of controversy. In the overall scheme of things the State wastes money on, keeping the dairies alive for a while wasn’t a big deal although there was strong criticism from the fiscal conservatives on the R side and the usual criticism of any R action from the D side. I don’t know or much care what the current status of the dairies and the creameries is, but this is the reason the whole thing rose above the usual clutter.

… do you have an actual source that says Palin approved the Havemeister hiring decision? I have two sources, one from the NASDA and one from the Alaska Department of Natural Resources, that says the decision was made by Tom Irwin, Commissioner of Natural Resources. So until I see something that says otherwise I’m sticking with the sources that I have.

  • Leverkuhn

Having had a chance to take a second (and longer) look at your post, I realize we are not in disagreement as much as I first thought.

It seems that you are saying the following:

    1) The hiring decision came from Irwin, although Palin gave it the OK.

    2) Palin gave it the OK.

    3) Therefore, Havemeister owes her appointment first to Irwin, and only secondarily to Palin.

If that is the meaning of your post I have no problem with it, and I apologize for writing in haste.

  • Leverkuhn
