Scandal coverage squeezes out conservative-friendly stimulus substance

Originally published by Mike DeVine, Legal Editor for The Minority Report

Hypocrisy is a puny sin and men will always have feet of clay.

Modern day liberalism is a huge sin and there is limited time to defeat its most recent mortally dangerous to America stimulus bill iteration.

The latest example (Daschle, a mere potential appointee) of why any media coverage of scandals, even when the scandalous are Democrats (and even when they directly implicate the President himself - see picture as reminder), always hurts conservatives. Why? Because substance, i.e. facts and history, is always on our side but also requires more effort to communicate than the clay feet of humans.

Conservatism advances when Americans are focused on the flaws of liberal policies. Witness the past few weeks as Republicans succeeded in highlighting many of the most outrageous paens to extremist liberal interest groups in the Pelosi government growth bill.

We must not get sidetracked with hypocrisy obsessions focused on individual Democrats. They have tax paying replacements.

It is vital that we try and get a stimulus bill that would actually help hasten the end of this recession. It is a long shot, I admit. Why? Because the odds are that even if we strip out all the crazy bridges to nowhere and add all the supply side tax cuts we dream of, that what will remain will be the 30% permanent growth in government core of this monstrosity.

But every minute we focus on the sins of a would-be HHS Secretary or even the competence of President Obama’s administration to vet nominees, is a minute not focused on the mortal danger of this pending legislation that we have only a few weeks to kill or re-write to a point of acceptability.

America needs a real stimulus. The best way to achieve it is to focus on the actual provisions of the bill, not clay feet.

Yes, it is a long shot that we could make this bill acceptable, but it is not impossible and it is worth a try, but a real try would require drone like focus for the next two weeks.

We are too happy because of the minor victory in the House and movement in the Senate but danger of the parts of the bill that would likely survive esp if easily rolled repubs can survive, will all hurt us long after our

Thought experiment: Imagine the world had fast-forwarded from Nov 5

6eorge Jetson Wednesday, February 4th at 9:08AM EST (link)

to the present.

No Blago, Richardson, Geithner, Daschle, Clinton, etc…

I would posit that the majority of the public would have supported ANY Obama-endorsed stimulus bill, regardless of the contents.

The public believed in a ludicrous, extreme version of an all-benevolent, Obama-led fantasy government on Nov 5.

IMO, like a series of body blows, the continuous scandals since Nov 5 have taken an extremely important cumulative toll on the free pass that the public was giving the Democrats on Nov 5? Recall the series of the events in the fall. Early Sept, Obama & McCain are tied. Sept 15, the Lehman crisis releases the full wrath of the credit crunch. In the aftermath, despite the HUGE role Democrats played in laying the foundation for the credit crunch, Obama and the Dems roll to easy victory because the public basically believes the repeated slogan Bush = Worst. President. Ever. and Obama and the Dems are not Bush.

Yes, even in the absence of corruption, there’s a crucial argument to be made that government will provide inferior outcomes vs free markets due to the lack of competition, feedback, incentive to adjust, and accountability. Unfortunately, however, the majority of the public believed in Santa Claus on Nov 5. Have the vivid examples of corruption assisted conservatives as we make our case not to trust government with more of our money? I believe the answer to be an overwhelming “Yes!”

But as you say, the next 2-3 weeks are crucial, as lasting laws hang in the balance. Time not for body blows, but for head shots (the content of the Stimulus bill). In football, there is a notion of the “24 hour celebration” rule.
You get to celebrate a victory (i.e. Daschle) for 24 hours, but then you put it behind you and focus on the next game.

The next game is the Super Bowl (the Stimulus Bill), and it deserves our full attention. But to argue that the momentum from the winning streak Conservatives have been on in the weekly changes in public opinion since Nov 5 have not mattered introduces some “cognitive friction” (i.e. Huh??), which in itself could be a distraction from the upcoming game.

Some of the arguments on pork are sounding positively McCain-esque, which is not positive.

Pork is just dead wood. Government programs are vampires that can’t be killed while they kill on a continuous basis, sucking our blood.

We cannot become the green eye-shades party.
We cannot become merely the anti-pork party.

We must become the party of freedom, self-determination, and humble government.

Obama’s “stimulus” must be shown in the full light of day for what it is. We knew if he was elected they would try to ram crap like this down our throats. The young 18-30 year old voters will be hurt the most by this wasteful spending. In 30 years when those bonds come due our children & grandchildren will be paying for it with real blood, sweat & tears.

Definitions Please?

gatlinggun6 Wednesday, February 4th at 12:54AM EST (link)

izoneguy
You and others are the reason there are few conservative arguments worth a thing any more. Every counter argument about democratic anything is simply full of RNC talking points, meaningless words and phrases and sheer gibberish.

For example “pork” . Could you please enlighten us with an objective definition of pork? My guess is pork is whatever you disagree with in any particular bill. Or will you say you can’t define it but you know it when you see it?

Let me see, the stimulus bill in question is 638 pages long, so would you care to lie to us and tell us you have actually read the bill? While you are at it, tell us what percentage of the bill is pork and what percentage is stimulus.

Since you have read the bill are you in favor of the iron and steel provisions? Are you in favor of the prevailing wages rates requirements? Are you in favor of the accountability provisions in the bill or do you seek significant changes? Do you believe there is any stimulative effect in spending $350 mil in water shed and flood prevention operations? Can I assume you live in a desert state, or some place where flooding is not an issue?

How about commenting on the tax provisions as well and tell us what stimulative effect they will have. We should have a sustained and long debate about the Bill, but repeating something we heard on a talk show or a TV news program is no substitute for drilling into details and other sources to advance well reasoned opinions and/or fact based arguments.

So what’s my point? or points? First, read the damn thing and don’t accept as fact what any radio or TV person tells you without some independent verification. All sorts of misleading crap has gone over the airways about this bill, some of it half truths and some of it outright fabrication, and none of it any serious analysis of the many provisions in the bill.

Second you can be part of the problem or part of the solution, whining about pork, or whining about everything will get you exactly no where.

Third and last think for yourself, Limbaugh, Hannity, Lou, and a whole host of other talking heads, the talkocracy, care more about their ratings and their own pocketbooks than they care about mine or yours. To them we are basically chumps, drones who are supposed to run around repeating the crap they spout.

And do you really want to quote Ronald Reagan on the economy? President Reagan was certainly the Great Communicator, but even his most ardent fan would not call him the Great Economist.

Anyway since you seem to worship him, here’s something else from the Great Communicator:

Reagan vowed to reduce the Federal government and cut some cabinet departments. By the time he left office, he’d increased the government’s size and added a department.

I'm impressed, gatlinggun6. You didn't scream about Palin *once*.

Moe Lane Wednesday, February 4th at 1:27AM EST (link)

Unfortunately, you did scream enough to warrant a review, which is why this banning is so hysterically ironic.

Ta.

A starting point on pork

civil_truth Wednesday, February 4th at 1:35AM EST (link)

Pork is expenditure of Federal funds on state and local projects 1) whose benefits does not extend beyond that state; and 2) are perfectly capable of being paid for by the citizens of said local community and state.

I would not include as pork funds that are spent to fulfill a federal mandate. I might well question the wisdom of the mandate itself, but funding the mandate is not pork.

Projects which cross state lines might or might not be pork - that depends on the severability of the projects between the involved states and assessment of whether the purpose of this expenditure substantively falls under mandated Federal responsibilities.

Another aspect refers to the process - whether awards are made through a competitive process mediated by an impartial group, or whether they are made noncompetitively at the behest of individual members. Another modulator is germaneness to the purposes of the bill.

I kinda said that on my own blog.

Steph C Tuesday, February 3rd at 7:31PM EST (link)

Which nobody reads, lol. However, pointing out the scandals and the double standards are important, too. If we don’t and don’t keep reminding people about them, they’ll forget come election time and we’ll start this whole sorry mess all over again.

We’re going to get that awful fake stimulus bill one way or another. Just about every one who has gotten “face time” has said so. The best we can hope for is that it goes through with almost all Dem votes rather than the so-called bipartisanship which, in liberal speak, means giving in. They will pass it in spite of the people’s opposition to it if you look at the polls at all.

Somewhere further down in the thread there’s a comment about happiness over Daschle’s withdrawal. I’m not happy about it. I want Obama’s cabinet so full of outright hypocrits that the country won’t have a choice but see the reality of the empty suit he was before and after the election.

All he knows how to do is talk and it’s starting to show in a big way already. Not even a month in office and how many press conferences has he had? Every nominee has had one kind of problem or another. The flavor of ethical delimna today is taxes. Before that it was donors or lobbying or something else.

Setting the bar high… as his press secretary said in his defense. Well setting high standards means you should live up to them, especially if you claim THE leadership position but he can’t. So, what good was setting the bar high?

David123 Tuesday, February 3rd at 8:56PM EST (link)

Do the math

JustLeaveMeAlone Tuesday, February 3rd at 9:11PM EST (link)

$800,000,000,000.00 divided by 300,000,000 people.

Then think about the mere interest on that debt. Think about taxes for the rest of your life, your kids’ lives, your grandkids’ lives to pay that back. Think of what that tax money COULD have paid for in the future, but won’t be able to because it will be unavailable.

Think about the fact that while you may be a taxpayer, a whole lot of your fellow citizens are not — kids, many elderly, the poor, the sick, etc. So you get to pay their share, too.

So what are you buying with your money? Are you really creating new jobs?

Left alone, the economy creates jobs all by itself. I am living proof of that :)

Do we need infrastructure spending? Yes. I’ll give you that. But what percentage of that $800 billion is going to infrastructure?

Hint: not so much. Go read what that $800 billion includes, and tell me if you want to pay for that? Tell me what is stimulative about it?

The current bill creates over 250 government “programs”. And we all know just how effective those are. They are also the nearest thing to eternal life you’ll see this side of the grave. They will help to set in cement the democrat agenda of social engineering — and entrenching special interests who vote democrat!

Do you really want to pay the democrats marketing bill for the rest of your life? Do you think the next generation should have to, as well?

DeMint illustrates how puny is Daschel's hypocrisy

Mike gamecock DeVine Tuesday, February 3rd at 7:03PM EST (link)

when he says:

The bill, if it were a country, would have the 15th largest economy in the world — right in between Australia and Mexico, greater than the Gross Domestic Products of Saudi Arabia and Iran put together. And the American people will be forced to borrow 100 percent of the unprecedented $1.2 trillion price tag, including interest. The stimulus bill will cost well over $1 billion dollars for every page it is printed on and $400,000 for every job it hopes to create or save.

What I fail to understand is why people aren't flipping about this

JustLeaveMeAlone Tuesday, February 3rd at 8:55PM EST (link)

Is it that the sheer size of the numbers is incomprehensible?

If I were an R-congressperson, I’d be dedicating myself and my staff to breaking down that bill to numbers people can UNDERSTAND — things like:

“For every man, woman, transsexual, and child, this particular pork will cost $X00.000,000″

I’d go through strip of bacon by strip of bacon, crunch the numbers, and SHOUT the price tag per capita of every piece of pork — then tell people WHO the treasonous inhuman jerk was who put it into the bill!

I’d be telling people, “Hey, do you have two kids? If so, you, your spouse, and your kids will owe $X00,000,000 for (insert porkchop here) — and that particular item will benefit Senator Benedict Arnold’s district, which is why he saddled you with the bill for it.”

I’d be saying, “Hey, do you have an elderly parent with Alzheimer’s? Well, they are also on the hook for $X00,000,000, and when they die, YOU and your kids inherit that DEBT forever and ever, Amen, cuz if you think we are gonna quit deficit spending once this is done, think again!”

This needs to be put into HUMAN terms — terms that people who write checks every month for family bills can understand.

I think if people truly grasped the ridiculous crap in this plan, there would be riots on the streets. People would be on planes, trains, and automobiles to DC to drag their representatives to the nearest funny farms for shock treatments and lobotomies.

Because this is totally, completely, and awesomely INSANE.

Ok Mike let me expand on my point...

Attack Mode Tuesday, February 3rd at 7:44PM EST (link)

The GOP and Conservative Activist’s can and should focus on both according to the importance of each respectively.

I don’t think stopping the porkulus while leaving Obama and the Dems with a shred of credibility is a winning position. We can use the ethical challenges of the Obama Administration to highlight the current debate about the porkulus bill.

If we were to totally ignore the scandals and focus only on the porkulus and then fail to stop the porkulus because people still “trust” Obama despite all evidence being to the contrary then we have not won a battle none the less, the war.

I think that with you and Erick and the Brian’s and Leon and Dan and Jeff we here at RedState should be able to cover EVERYTHING.

The new RNC Chair and the actual elected Republicans should focus soley on the porkulus, but us activists need to expose the other sub-issues.

This strategy allows our elected leaders to stay above the scandal fray while it still allows us, the activists, to expose the utter hypocrisy, which is far beyond that of the average man, of the Obama Administration and the Democratic Party.

So what can I, a mere peon, with NO ties, NO connections, and VERY LITTLE ability to even effectively debate the issue with my former (lib) friends - WHAT can I do? What can all of us do? I need specifics here. We don’t have much time, I agree. So how do we best move forward to make sure this is defeated?

P.S. I did allow myself 5 minutes to gloat when I read that Daschel had withdrawn from consideration.

actually, aaron has about convinced me that the scandals could taint the dems enough to help

But, as to your question. Study the stimulus bill in detail and write a blog a day highlighting egregious provisions.

“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan ‘press on’ has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.” Calvin Coolidge.

Because none fo the freaking Democrats pay their taxes. They are all tax cheats, and that’s why they are passing a great big spending bill to give the money to their friends while sticking your parents, you, your friends, your spouse, and each of your children, even the one who is still in the oven and not due until June, with a debt of $3000 that needs to be paid off with interest every year from now until … well … until forever cuz it ain’t never gonna be paid off. Of course, if you were a Democrat congress member, you wouldn’t be paying your taxes so you wouldn’t care about that. Ain’t that right, Misters Daschle and Rangel? Just ask them about it. Ask them why they don’t pay their taxes but keep on raising yours. Keep on asking them until your blood pressure gets to a dangerous level, and then promise yourself you’ll do something *real* if you live through it.

I may not be a lawyer, but I do know a bit about strategery ;^) The GOP needs to embrace the all in perspective or else we are going to stay in the minority. Our resources are much greater than people think, the only problem is that we still lack a general…I have only seen Steele on the idiot box one time since his election to RNC Chair….he needs to step up.

Mike you are right but I am not sure why did you decide to bury the central point in the middle.

Here is the most striking and best line (I might be wrong in my understanding)…
“30% permanent growth in government core of this monstrosity”.

When Rush appeared on Hannity’s show the most important lines got lost in the hype…
—————
“The growth of government. I think the intent here is to create as many dependent Americans as possible looking to government for their hope and salvation.
If he gets nationalized health care, I mean, it’s over, Sean. We’re never going to roll that back. That’s the end of America as we have known it because that’s then going to set the stage for everything being government owned, operated, or provided.”
—————

Never ending programs are the real issue. The idea I think is creating a permanent majority.

I buried the lede! You are so right man. That 30% growth should be the main talking point. I will do better next time.

that marginalizes the public debate on the Spending and Debt Stimulus Package.

In Illinois, the topic is the recently ousting of Blago, another major ally of the Hero.

Good for the Dems, I should say.
