[update - June 24, 2009]
I was wrong in my initial conclusion that the Drive-by media was doing a hit job on the first Republican I ever voted for. It is now clear to me that South Carolina’s Governor was reckless in the conduct of his office. I initially relied upon the seeming contradiction between “missing” headlines and this statement in the body of the stories about Mark Sanford’s whereabouts:
His communications director, Joel Sawyer, wouldn’t disclose Sanford’s location but said that before the governor left town last week “he let staff know his whereabouts and that he’d be difficult to reach.”
Given Governor Sanford’s admission yesterday that he has been in Argentina together with statements from his staff that he was on the Appalachian Trail, it is clear that Sanford was not in sufficient communication with his staff so as to be diligent in the conduct of the responsibilities of his office.
I suspect the reporters of the initial story could tell by the body language of Sanford’s aides that they were lying.
I have no problem with a governor getting away from it all, but he must stay in touch with the situation in his state. An astute political observer assured me early on that she was sure he had a second cell phone in another name for this purpose. I agree, but it is obvious that he didn’t utilize any sufficient communication medium for at least 48-72 hours, or he was aware of the controversy and decided to let it continue.
That may have been ok, by itself. After all, if he is aware of the fact that no hurricane has hit the state nor that any other emergency event has occurred, then he knows that he can at any time, appear on the scene. But when your staff is lying to cover for you, then the situation is unacceptable.
I draw no conclusions about his marital/family situation, but would only say that the same rule I applied to Bill Clinton applies to Sanford. That rule is that it is not acceptable for executive office holders to put themselves in a position to be blackmailed.
For years, I considered Sanford a bit of a flake with his Ron Paul-like voting record as a congressman and pig battles with big government state legislators in his own party. And, yes he is a flake. But that does not disqualify, and I actually admire his flakiness, even his daring to have a private life and not let the press lead him around by the nose. I had come, as you will see below in my original story from a few days ago, that he has won me over on his political positions on the stimulus and more.
But the position he put his staff in could well disqualify him from a credible presidential campaign even if, as is likely, he has learned a valuable lesson that he would never violate again.
[end update]
The only thing “missing” is the credibility of the leftist myth that we can’t function as a people without Big Brother government monitoring our every move 24/7 365.
Hence, the Drive-by media’s breathless non-story, aided and abetted by Democrats and big government Republican political opponents, to try and discredit him as “missing” for four days even though the press “reports” that he was missing, included the following:
His communications director, Joel Sawyer, wouldn’t disclose Sanford’s location but said that before the governor left town last week “he let staff know his whereabouts and that he’d be difficult to reach.”
Never thought Foghorn Leghorn would have to translate the word spelled m*i*s*s*i*n*g, but here goes:
There are no witnesses here, but I did tell my paralegal I was going home when last I saw him at 1400 hours.
Feels better knowing that I will not be considered missing and hence, presumed “crazy” since Jonathan Martin can confirm my whereabouts.
Seems like everybody’s sore at S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford these days.
And for good reason – he talks like a crazy man.
Sanford says he doesn’t want to pour money on a fire.
Which is crazy talk. After all, it’s free money. Straight from Washington.
As part of the recovery plan, federal stimuluteers earmarked $700 million for S.C. education. Sanford balked.
Sanford says things like, when you’re in a hole, stop digging.
Which is crazy talk. After all, who cares how deep it gets?
Mark Washburn of The Charlotte Observer gets who is really crazy, as he continues:
But he said more than 10 percent of S.C. taxpayer money goes to debt service. If he took the $700 million, he said, he’d rather spend it on paying down the principal.
Sanford says things like, we ought to put some hay in the barn like farmers do, knowing winter is coming.
Which is crazy talk. After all, winter is far away. And the problem is here now.
Washington, wise in its ways, said take the money. But give it to schools, now.
But he argued that taking the money would just cause more problems. South Carolina would spend the cash over the next two years, then be left with a huge hole in its budget when the windfall ran out.
Sanford says things like, I don’t want to just kick the can down the road for someone else to deal with.
Which is crazy talk. After all, he’d be out of office by then.
Folks went to court and got an order telling him to take the money. After all, they said, we must think of the children. We must pay for education.
Sanford says things like, it will be those children who will pay the money back.
Which is crazy talk. After all, we’ve been sticking our kids with the bill for years. That’s how it works.
Sanford was one of those politicians who said when he was running that he’d be an agent for effective but efficient government. He said he’d make the hard decisions when they came along. He said he’d do the right thing, even if it was unpopular.
Which, as it turns out, isn’t crazy talk.
Which, as it turns out, is exactly what he did.
So, hop in governor. Traffic is pretty light on that road you want to go down. And even though there’s plenty of room in the car, I happen to like where you’re headed.
Gamecock likes where Sanford is headed, too.
Call me crazy, but it seems that what the fears that Sanford could lead a movement that would a lot of big government nanny-state jobs missing from future budgets.

Gov. Sanford has ensured this story will have legs...and that's not good for him
civil_truth Wednesday, June 24th at 11:42AM EDT (link)I’m sure reporters and bloggers with any connections in Argentina will be searching to find out what Sanford was doing in Argentina in the hopes of uncovering some scandal, especially if it were to involve that three letter “S” word (and the 8 letter “A” word). Or at least, find some evidence that might seem suggestive or open to interpretation and wild speculation.
Given the new “Palin Standard” of news sourcing, Gov. Sanford can expect that he will be enjoying some rather wild stories from the left blogosphere, some of which will end up in the MSM as well - and face some rather cruel questioning.
His biggest problem, though (as Mike alluded to) is that without any witnesses accompanying him on the trip, he will find it difficult to refute accusations of misconduct. I know that it’s supposed to be “innocent until proven guilty” but in the case of Republican politicians with possible Presidential aspirations, it’s “guilty until proven innocent” - especially now that the jackals hit paydirt with Sen. Ensign after misfiring with Sarah.
Not to mention that this tempest offers a wonderful opportunity to divert attention from Congress and foreign policy errors.
And Rightly So!
amen on all that, but for me, I don't even need to know more about his personal life
Mike gamecock DeVine Wednesday, June 24th at 11:47AM EDT (link)That he allowed a situation in which his office had to lie reveals a major flaw in his judgment.

No, C_T, it's just guilty;
Achance Wednesday, June 24th at 12:02PM EDT (link)there’s nothing a Republican can do to prove him/herself innocent. And whatever else it was, Sanford was just felony stupid to pull something like this. I’m thinking though that somebody inside ratted him out or dropped the dime to the media. With a good staff, governors and other high-level people in government can be gone for quite some time and nobody would know it.
In Vino Veritas
Silly me, I was wandering in fantasy land again
civil_truth Wednesday, June 24th at 12:27PM EDT (link)As far as ratting him out, the lieutenant governor would seem a likely source - especially if Gov. Sanford had duly informed him that he was going to be out-of-touch so that he could step in if necessary.
As to why the staff apparently was out of the loop (and probably his wife, unless she was quoted out of context) - only Gov. Sanford knows the answer to that. And if he actually is hiding something serious about his trip, he’ll have immolated himself playing with fire.
And doing this over Father’s Day - I’m already visualizing the tabloid headlines (or these days, perhaps the MSM: the distinction between the two is fast disappearing, or even reversed with the tabloids become the more reliable of the two.)
Hopefully Sanford has not “compounded the felony ’stupid’”. We’ll have to see. Regarding his presidential chances: two years can be ancient history in today’s American politics - or just yesterday. But since he’s a Republican, yesterday is more likely.
And Rightly So!
My worst case scenario has come to pass
civil_truth Wednesday, June 24th at 3:10PM EDT (link)I think Gov. Sanford has taken over the “reckless” crown from Bill Clinton.
It’s a real stain on our political leadership today that when I heard about this trip to Argentina, my first thoughts were suspicions of sex and adultery. Even worse that this actually turned out to be true.
After the past week, it’s going to be a long, long time before the American public is going to take any Republican politican seriously about supporting family values.
And the operant conditioning of the American people from these episodes will further fray the trust that Americans are willing to put in Republican politicians and by association, damages the credibility of the Republican party - which is particularly damaging when you’re a shrinking minority to start with.
A dark day for the Republic.
And Rightly So!
Whoa, now, that's way over the top.
Flagstaff Wednesday, June 24th at 3:31PM EDT (link)Sanford is a putz, but I’ve seen Bill Clinton, and he’s no Bill Clinton. He’s not even a John Edwards. Let’s not try to blame future Republican shortcomings on Sanford.

It's the cumulative effect that is the problem
civil_truth Wednesday, June 24th at 4:38PM EDT (link)I’m not singling out Sanford (I was including Ensign in the 3rd paragraph). Nor was I attempting to thereby exculpate our Congressional leadership, NRSC for their shortcomings.
Rather, (as I alluded to in the 4th paragraph), I’m talking about the developing of a conditioned reflex among voters, and each reinforcement progressively becomes harder to overcome. It’s the drip, drip, drip on the Republican rock that threatens at some point to seriously weaken it.
We do need to keep the focus on Obama and the Democratic extreme policies. But our job is made so much harder when our leaders create the distraction.
And Rightly So!
Actually, c-t,
Flagstaff Wednesday, June 24th at 6:48PM EDT (link)I only meant to reply to this sentence:
That was over the top. He isn’t even the President, and he’s not a serial adulterer (he says), and his paramour is an adult, not an intern. Nowhere near as reckless. BC is still the King. Sorry I wasn’t more clear.
I agree that the press will do its best to make the rest of your comment come true.
Pluto, the Ninth Planet - Forever!
I was wrong to make this a competition
civil_truth Wednesday, June 24th at 7:57PM EDT (link)Your points are well taken.
What struck me was that the extreme recklessness (or cluelessness) for Gov. Sanford, just days after the whole blow-up about Sen. Ensign, to have suddenly taken off secretly for Argentina for a week for as assignation with his paramour without telling anyone and without communicating with anyone during his time away, wife included, as to where he was gone (or worse, perhaps lying to his staff where he had gone) and expected that he could get away with it.
But on reflection, I agree that trying to make a competition between this (hopefully) single episode and a lifetime pattern of reckless behavior by our ex-President was out-of-bounds.
And Rightly So!

Mike gamecock DeVine Wednesday, June 24th at 12:31PM EDT (link)that can’t be disproved, but that doesn’t bother me. I recognize that it could be reckless though given the tendency of others to accept flimsy evidence.

ZootSuit Wednesday, June 24th at 11:54AM EDT (link)He has successfully turned what should have been a non-issue into a major story. And the sad thing is, this really isn’t the MSM’s fault: all Sanford had to do is tell his staff that he was going to Argentina for a little “R&R” (and maybe even to explore Argentina’s private ’social security” system) and give them some way to communicate with him in an emergency. He didn’t even have to take his wife and family with him as long as he told them where he was: although takingthem with him would have been much preferable.

Mike gamecock DeVine Wednesday, June 24th at 12:40PM EDT (link)My conclusion is narrowly tailored. I have no problem with him traveling alone and not telling people where he is, but when he doesn’t coordinate the truth and how inquiries will be handled with his staff, that is poor judgment.
I suspect that had a second cell phone that he either didn’t use for too long or did use and decided the brou-ha-ha was nothing for 48 hours.
That his staff lied shows his poor management.
I changed my initial defense based on new facts and was challenged by a fellow Redstater offline to revise my opinion and concluded that was the proper thing to do.

Neil Stevens, how do you know nothing happened?
ZootSuit Wednesday, June 24th at 12:49PM EDT (link)By the way, I am a South Carolinian and a big Mark Sanford supporter. I (still) wish him the best personally and hope that he can somehow make it to the White House (maybe). But any way you look at it, Sanford showed poor judgment and looks stupid for at least two reasons.
1) Again, how do you know nothing happened?
As I said in another post, I personally don’t think Sanford did anything immoral or amiss when he was away. But the thing is, his handling of this situation leaves him open to such allegations. If he handled the situation better, he could still have gone to Argentina for a little “R&R” and/or to investigate Argentina’s private “social security” system or whathaveyou. But he did not.
2) It’s weird and irresponsible to leave a leave-of-absence from any high-level job without telling someone how to get in contact with you.
If the Chairman of AT&T was incommunicado for several days with no one, not even his wife and family, knowing where he was, that would considered irresponsible and more than likely, the market would reflect that. Indeed, if I was incommunicado for several days without anyone, including my wife and family, knowing how to contact me, it would raise eyebrows. And that probably goes for any doctor, lawyer, or anyone with professional responsibilities. Including the governor of a state.

ZootSuit Wednesday, June 24th at 1:25PM EDT (link)It’s like the old political adage, “It’s not the act that was a crime, it was the cover-up.”
There was nothing wrong with Mark Sanford going to Argentina. The problem was him not telling his staff so that this issue became a major story.
Hey, I’m libertarian enough to think that this country would be better off if all it’s elected officials vanished for a week (or month or year or term) or two. The problem with Mark Sanford is not that he “vanished” but that it was not communicated correctly by him to his staff and, consequently, from his staff to the public.

But of course the Governor owes his staff competence and integrity in his dealings with them as any employer does to any employee and any human to another human.
But what matters most is that he owes the office he holds and South Carolinians reasonable conduct in his office, and that certainly includes not recklessly exposing the office to ridicule.
