MEMBER DIARY

How Limbaugh’s embodiment of MLK’s dream changed my life

From the diaries by Erick

Rush dares to judge all by the content of their character and that threatens the race industry

Raised by parents that were instrumental in integrating the races in my South Carolina hometown in the 60s and 70s, I was receptive in my youth to the Democratic Party’s rhetoric of racial inclusion. I practiced affirmative action in my law firm in the 80s and became a party official; but almost from the beginning of my political activism there was some unease with my liberal associations.

Fellow democrats giggled about an empire Reagan correctly denounced as evil; ignored the success of tax cuts; and hired mostly white paralegals. As a very young county party chairman I was appalled at hostility to people of faith by my party elders, as well as the unfair demonization of Republicans as racist and uncaring for the poor.

I admit at this time that I suffered from extreme, classic Democratic Party class envy and that later on, my reluctance to change parties while still in my hometown was due partly to this and cowardice, but I couldn’t deny that among the legal community and members of my church, it was invariably mostly the Republicans that actually hired blacks.

eib

Then I heard the Wonder of Rush, and Mike Gallagher on 950 WORD-AM. I had already been softened up by the hypocrisy of fellow democrats, but it was a joyous revelation to hear conservative republicans denounce outright racists live on Talk Radio, as Gallagher did almost on a daily basis.

Rush didn’t seem to get many calls from racists, and so didn’t have such opportunities, and most of my democrat friends denounced Rush as a bigot. At this time in the early 90s, I disagreed with Rush on most issues, but simply could not turn the radio away from his show for more than 15 seconds after a fit of anger.

There was something about Rush’s attitude that fascinated me, and it took two incidents that occurred within a single week to open my eyes to a truth that would change my life.

I was a prolific criminal defense trial lawyer and so had a lot of contact with police officers. One day, while at the City Police Department, I made an offhand comment to a black female sergeant that assumed she was a Democrat. I was an official with the county party at the time. The Sergeant rebuked me with a kind of righteous indignation that had never been directed at me by anyone I didn’t call Daddy.

Later that week, I attended an event promoting the Rush Limbaugh Show, with Mike Gallagher hosting a special appearance by Bo Snerdly, Rush Limbaugh’s longtime business partner, silent sidekick on the air, and call screener.

The moment I saw Snerdly, I understood what it was about Rush that so appealed to me. I was already kind of alone among my democrat friends in defending Rush against charges of racism, and wondered why he didn’t defend himself more, and then I saw Snerdly and immediately understood this man called Rush, because I saw something in him that saw in my father and, dare I say, in me.

I never had known that Snerdly was black. Rush never mentioned that fact despite all the libel and slander against him and despite the fact that he regularly spoke back and forth with Snerdly (not heard) about such charges on the air.

Rush was secure in the truth, and looking back on the EIB experience, I realized that what so appealed to me about Rush was that he treated all people the same, no matter the race. Race was irrelevant.

mlk

Rush was the embodiment of the character content, color-blind dream of Martin Luther King, Jr. that became my dream in my youth.

So it is with great sadness that I see a man whose complete absence of racism made me receptive to his conservative message, is now vilified by the ignorant and the vile, as the antithesis.

It is with great sadness that I see otherwise brilliant journalists like Jason Whitlock rely upon unreliable sources for despicable false quotes rather than fact-check, or, pray tell, actually call Rush before going to press.

But I also know that it is not the recently released false quotes that are at the heart of the faux uproar attending a possible purchase of the St. Louis Rams. The fake quotes were first posted on line in 2005. Rush has been vilified since 1988 for accurate quotes, either taken out of context, or completely misunderstood. But the main reason for the uproar is that liberals see conservatism itself as racist or, rather, a threat to their own racism cloaked as compassion.

So, it is with even more sadness that I see ignorance and/or political correctness enforced like Stalinism (without the mass murder) among some NFL owners. One nugget from the Colt’s Irsay is a smoking gun to break through the ignorance, and that is his suggestion that Tony Dungy be asked his opinion of Rush.

Dungy appeared twice on Rush’s show last year!

I am thrilled that Rush is fighting back this time, and am already happy that ESPN’s Michael Wilbon has retracted his objections and Colin Cowherd has defended Rush, as have others.

I am saddened that so many are still so fearful of the PC police that they refuse to acknowledge the obvious meaning of the English language when evaluating Rush’s ESPN description of journalist apologists for McNabb; and that the Today Show left his explanations of the Magic Negro parody and the drive-by ignorance of the school children singing the praises of Barack Hussein Obama, umm, umm, umm.

President Obama’s surrender in the Gates-Harvard affair had given me hope that more white Americans were throwing off the false white guilt post-Obama Inauguration, and joining Rush in the post-racial world he has lived in for most if not all of his life.

I just thank God that heard the voice that embodied MLK’s dream and joined that world with Rush and Martin.

God bless you brother Rush. My prayers are always with you.

    and well deserved/earned!

Excellent analysis and writing as usual . . . in my humble opinion (not worth much, but I’ll give it anyway), front page is an appropriate place for many of your fine articles. Keep them coming; we appreciate your work.

    Take Care, mailloux

The reason I never write diaries is because someone always says it like would, only better and you just did. Judging from your timeline, you and I became Rush DHs about the same time. The event that solidified me in the right (not center right) was the Clarence Thomas hearings. Thanks, a job well done.

  • Illinicon

Isnt ironic that once again the people who detest the current lack of civility and heated rhetoric our modern day politics are only adding to it. Really these libs should be ashamed.

is the WORST because it embodies everything WE already know about the leftist media and that is they are LIARS! They walk iin lockstep with the Democrats and the D’s don’t like Rush because he tells the TRUTH about them so their lapdogs ie: the leftist media are taking their cue’s from the D’s!

  • Richard Mullins

because he speaks the truth. Really, he doesn’t make things up out of thin air like most if not all of the leftist media. We checks things out all the time. They are all jealous of Rush because of it. Too bad for them, people don’t have sympathy for whinners.

by the left that one could ever see. Because of the MSM control of the media and the message, they have been able to get away with it for decades. The Leftists have to scream racism to cover up their own. I had not realized how racist they were, until waking up and becoming much more observant of the political world.

The tragedy remains though, that the left is just using race to further their own agenda, having no genuine belief in anyone else except their own elitist aristocracy.

of these moments that enlightened your path to conservatism. The incredible disservice the Left/Democrats do in their persistent racism meme, is shameful and a disgrace in this country.

I wonder if Rush realizes what a friend he has in you.
I’m glad you could write about it.

I remarked yesterday, here is a rich white guy. He wants to buy a business, and he will hire lots of collage age kids, many of them minorities, to do particular jobs. And most of these are good jobs, many paying in excess of a million dollars a year. They have fabulous health plans, and a retirement plan too. Many can retire in their early 30?s. Rush wants to do all of this, and he believes he can still realize a return on his investment. And for this he is considered a racist? Providing well-paying jobs to minority young adults who may not have even graduated college, and he is a racist?

    That makes no logical sense!

  • Richard Mullins

buying the team. If another leftist bought it, it wouldn’t be racist, which is why the word “Racist” is an abused word. It’s starting to lose it meaning and becoming one that means that anyone that doesn’t believe us leftists is a racist.

  • http://www.examiner.com/x-1597-Charlotte-Law--Politics-Examiner Mike gamecock DeVine

Yes, what the larger culture defines as racism is a crime against logic and good behavior. Conservatism is defined as racist per se, and the saddest part is that millions accept this as fact: they accept as part of conventional wisdom that Rush is racist. This is a great tragedy. It brings tears to my eyes. All I can do is write of my experience and try to reach the ignorant masses.

How’d the politics of retribution against “The Man” work out for the City of Detroit? Driving away business, one small business owner at a time.

I’m sure it was fun for those in power while it lasted, but trashing a significant source of your job providers doesn’t seem like such a good idea now, with the auto industry only a shadow of its former self.

  • CJB68

I’ve long considered the obvious hypocrisy by so-called “liberals” whose ideological extremism topped all concerns about said hypocrisy.  Along with the uproar over the Philadelphia jounalists’ promotion of Donovan McNabb, this is a textbook example of how Rush Limbaugh is unjustly tarnished by Leftist media’s demonizing attacks.  If only those with whom Rush was working to purchase the Rams had the same backbone that he did.

until we get out of their predetermined line. Doesn’t matter what color we are, if we don’t subscribe to the litany of anti-freedom, we will be destroyed, personally and professionally. Some perhaps losing their lives in the process, like our military in Afghanistan while Obama salsas in a lovely modern day parallel to “Nero fiddling while Rome burns.”

The majority have spoken out against his policies and we’re not invisible anymore because of it. We’re now Enemies of the State. The State is of the mindset that we must be changed or destroyed.

  • exprtwizard

I would like to hear how the liberals apologize for the racist history of the Democratic Party. What you thought Abe Lincoln formed the KKK?

Next time you see a documentary about black history, count how many times you hear the Democrat party?s role mentioned prior to LBJ.

Slavery and the civil war? Yes but no mention of which party controlled the statehouses that voted for secession.

Jim Crow laws? Absolutely, but no mention of which party passed them, or which party enforced them at the local level.

Sheriffs turning a blind eye to Klan atrocities? It?s right there, but no mention of which party those sheriffs belonged. Plenty of pictures of fire hoses and police dogs being turned on civil rights protesters, no mention of the party affiliation of the sheriff who ordered it.

White prosecutors refusing to seek indictments, no mention of the party affiliation of the prosecutors.

Apparently, Black History is important, but not so important that we can upset the narrative.

An absolutely outstanding article!! A written expression of thoughts by an intelligent and knowledgeable person has become a very rare event in recent time! The half-wits presently posing as writers in the media today are a disgrace to Journalism!! Thanks, Mike, for a breath of fresh air!!

Actually, I’ve been a conservative since the Vietnam War and I find Limbaugh a little bit bombastic for my tastes. However, when I first heard him I cheered and I still do at times. He is not afraid to speak the truth and that is indeed rare these days. Good on him and you!

BTW, I wrote a diary which I considered a stinging indictment of libs who call folks “racist” entitled, “Who’s the Racist?”

In it I describe two men without labeling them, one of whom is me and one is a former friend of mine who gratuitously called me a “racist” because I disagreed with him on some stupid move by the local housing authority.

The upshot was that while castigating “greedy” conservatives, he makes a tidy profit renting low end apartments; while calling conservatives “racist” he lives in an all-white neighborhood and goes to an all white church; while bragging about his own “open-mindedness” to all and sundry, no one dare contradict his opinion or else.

On the other hand, my profession and lifestyle would give credence to assuming I was the stereotypical liberal – counselor, integrated church, integrated neighborhood, willing to hear all opinions, etc.

Indeed, the only real way to determine personal merit is by “the content of their character” — not out-dated, insulting, puerile and ultimately stupid labels.

Frankly, the race card is becoming very boring. Growing up in the 60s, I have
seen the before, during and after. After all that’s been acomplished for
minorities for which my generation had to take the back seat of the bus now.
I understood what the goal was and I know it was achieved above and
beyond. I’ve heard all the complaints, and for the life of me, cannot
understand why it’s still going on today. All of my adult life, I’ve heard how
minorities cannot be Racists because they are not in Power. Only people
in power can be Racists. This is an outrage. Rush Limbaugh is definitely
a victim of Reverse Discrimination. Now this is an Over-kill. This is selfishness
and greed of Power. Fox News reports it as they see it and the Progressives
cannot handle the truth about themselves. I’m sure if people who voted for
President Obama knew then what they know now, they would have never
voted for a Vengeful , Vindictive Liberal who is on a mission to trash our
Constitutional Rights as Americans. Thanks to people in Fox News and
Rush Limbaugh, we know this now. The very thing that minorities have
fought for and received, is now being taken from the rest of us. He,
President Obama, is not President to all Americans, just his constituents and
his special interest groups. WELL, WHO’S IN POWER NOW?
    Rosanna

  • rosannagerbino

Is it Racism or Liberalism? Is it Black against White? Like Fox News would
say, “We report, you decide.” I want to remind everyone, what happened
to Rush Limbaugh in New York State. Governor Patterson vindictively
singled out Rush Limbaugh as a resident of New York and raised his taxes
so he would move out of this state. Now, Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and
others did everything in their POWER to prevent Mr. Limbaugh from buying into
a Football Team. What do you think is going on, America? They did this
just because they could. They have not proven any of the so-called Racist
remarks. Everything Rush Limbaugh has said over the years on the radio,
is documented, and other than Conservative views, none of those comments
were found in the archives. Maybe people like Jesse Jackson should stick
to shaking down Companies for money and get out of the Racism business.
I believe, even if Rush Limbaugh doesn’t need the money, he should not let
this go out of Principle because it appears they won’t stop pushing their
    campaign against him.

I don’t know how often most of you watch the news, but do you remember when Bill was in office,Hillery said quite frequently that Saul Alinsky was her mentor. She was in his class at college. He was a devout American hater. One of his ideas was to get in their face and call them names, intimidate and even attack if nessary. When you can’t win on the facts, that is all you can do.Don’t you notice that the Dems never want to debate? The reason is because they know they can’t win! They have trained college students ot protest anyone who comes on their campus, and not allow them to talk! They don’t even let college students decide for themselves. They ridicule them and embarrasthem in front of the whole class! They aren’t allowed to debate an issue at all!Our schools and colleges are just places of indoctronation, not ideas anymore! They are not allowed to debate anything the professors tell them! These teachers walk around like Gods! No one is allowed to have an idea of their own!You either believe their way or get humilated and even failed! The teachers are nothing more than bullies! The history books have been changed to fit their adjendia, not to tell the truth! If you think I am lieing just look at your childrens books some time. Our children can’t compete with other countries because they don’t educate, they indoctronate.I suggest that we don’t call them names ,just call them out for debates! If we do it enough times then our children will start to wonder why they won’t! I think this could work! Any feedback on that idea????
