Handel follows DeVine advice: Rejects automatic recount, concedes race to Deal before Noon [updated]

[update, Noon, August 11, 2010 - from the Political Insider]

The statement just arrived from her campaign:

I want to thank all of my friends, supporters, volunteers and my campaign team for a tremendous effort over the last 16 months. We ran a terrific campaign, beat the odds to come in first place in the Primary, and came so very close in the runoff election.

As of this morning, we are four tenths of a percentage point behind Nathan Deal with absentee ballots and overseas military votes yet to be counted.

We certainly have the option of requesting the automatic statewide recount. But we are not going to do that.

The best thing for our party is to rally around Congressman Deal as our nominee in the fight against Roy Barnes. Barnes would return Georgia to a past that is best kept in our rearview mirror. We must marshal all of our resources to defeat him.

I spoke with Nathan this morning and let him know that I endorse his candidacy and look forward to the fight against Barnes. I have also called on all who were supporting me to give their same commitment and energy to Nathan.

[end update]

Forcing a recount only risks alienating more GOP voters

Karen Handel went negative early and hard and lost her tea partier appeal. That is the Gamecock’s view from his Stone Mountain of Georgia roost (pictured).

That is why she trails by 2489 votes out of 578,671 in the Republican gubernatorial nomination run-off with 99% of precincts reporting. Given the less than 1% margin, Georgia’s Secretary of State is fully aware that she is entitled to a recount.

Handel should reject the recount option and concede defeat.

Why?

Because the only way she could be the GOP’s nominee to face former Governor Roy Barnes in the Fall is as the winner of a recount “reversal”, which would cost her more votes from bitter Deal supporters that stay away from the polls, than she can afford to shed in November.

A recount that somehow found mistakes in the initial counting of over so many votes would seem “fishy” and lessen the enthusiasm even more for a candidate that gave away her tea partier momentum by going negative first with unproven allegations that her opponent is “the most corrupt politician in Washington.”

We bemoaned the ad at the time and continued to support the only candidate with the guts to promise non-teacher education cuts, especially given the equally negative and unproven ads of Deal. But who could blame Deal for defending his good name? (Click here for all our columns on this race)

Handel was on her way to vanquishing three establishment Peach State politicians before Sarah Palin uttered the name “Karen Handel” in public. She was the tea partiers’ favorite. Then, she blew it. Her only chance to make a strong comeback is to show graciousness in defeat. You don’t do that by forcing a recount knowing that a reversal of so many votes would leave her victory tainted and disable her and the party’s chances in the general election.

Election Day 2010 is setting up as a “wave election” for Republicans due to the failure of the ObamaDems in D.C. to get the economy moving and due to federal and executive overreach on bailouts, health care and gargantuan deficits.

But the GOP candidate to succeed their term-limited Republican Sonny Perdue in the State House must face another former governor generally seen as a success in his first term and who is untainted from primary fights.

Now, no matter the outcome of any recount, Barnes opponent will not be one with enthusiastic tea partier support.

Given those dynamics, if Karen Handel wants to maximize the chances of Republican control when post-census re-districting takes place, she should limit the damage she has already wreaked by conceding defeat today and endorse Nathan Deal for Governor.

I agree that a recount should be avoided and if Handel truly lost, well that’s the breaks. However, without all the votes having been counted, I say “it ain’t over until it’s over”. ( well, alot of people have said that regarding alot of different situations, but I digress…)

On the other hand, I don’t know what the “number” possibility is for Handel regarding the overseas/military ballots. I will say this though; I feel very strongly that each and every vote should be counted before the race is called. If for no other reason than that, there are alot of us political newcomers who just can’t conceive that all votes wouldn’t be counted.

I could be wrong(gee imagine that) but it is my understanding that not all absentee ballots have been counted. This miffs me because my Mother voted absentee and I hate to think her vote didn’t count. I’m sure there are a lot of other absentee voters/absentee voter relatives, who feel the same.

With the vote being an approximate 2400 vote difference between the candidates, I’m really disheartened that a poster, whom I have been reading and agreeing with for quite sometime(Just because I have only been signed up on Redstate for a shor t time doesn’t mean I haven’t been watching) would suggest that Handel needs to concede.

I really didn’t think i would have to “pinch my nose” for my vote for the next Govenor for GA, and I realize that a lot of the blame can be laid at Handel’s own feet, but at the same time “It ain’t over till it’s over” and I guess that, under certain situations I am willing to believe in rainbows and Unicorns until it’s really over.

With all due respect Gamecock. You are breaking my heart.

The count isn’t finished. Provisional, military, and overseas ballots have not yet been counted. If you think a reversal in a recount would be bad, how about if Handel concedes and those votes flip the result? We shouldn’t even address the recount issue until the count is completed.

  • JamesSmith130

If the margin after absentees and military ballots come in gets below say 500, perhaps a recount is justified. If it is above that, forget it.

AJC Political Insider column by Jim Galloway has this:

Handel isn?t conceding, and Deal isn?t declaring victory. But don?t look for an impasse to last more than a few hours into Wednesday ? the state GOP can?t afford to give Democrat Roy Barnes any more of a head start.

I do not claim any special knowledge of Georgia politics, and I can’t disagree with this analysis. I just wish Jason Allen concedes up in MI-1 because the GOP can’t afford to give the D candidate up there any more of a head start.

  • ywhyvon1

I’ll say it again- “Gamecock, your breaking my heart”

  • ywhyvon1

But I’m willing to bet that Allen isn’t going to concede because it’s not in the Democrats/SEUI’s best interest.

  • jstjoan

Before we talk about conccessions, can we at least finish counting all of the original votes?

There are still military absentee ballots and an unknown number of provisional ballots that have yet to be counted for the FIRST time. I heard a news account this morning, too, that htere may be some absentee ballots in Fulton which have not yet been counted and that definately could be a game changer if true.

As much as each candidate (and their supporters) have invested intheis race, can we at least wait until all the ballots are counted before we have a discussion about the appropriateness of concession?

The point being made is that the loser after ALL the votes have been counted should concede the race before going into a protracted recount process. This call to concede does not have to be directed at only Karen Handel. It could possibly directed at Nathan Deal.

  • ywhyvon1

Again, I don’t know the numbers and statistics and yaddah yadday yaddah that allow the experts to know who is going to win even before all votes have been counted.

I can assume you have an insite/inside connection to tell you this, or are you just trying to get the word out that if Handel loses we need to get the word out that we need Deal over Barnes because redisricting is coming up>

Again, Not trying to slam you Gamecock. I really do think I love you.

Karen broke my heart with her negative adds too. I was lead to expect more from her.

Having said that, I choose to believe(in my rainbow and unicorn world) that she was lead by “the wrong type” within her campagn management(read: campaign professionals) and she has since discovered the error of her ways and if she does make the republican nomination, she will never ever do it again:) I’nt that sweet! Bless your little heart.( as Kenny would say: SNARK)

    Republican in the general
    ’nuff’ said.

Except, I still believe in rainbows and unicorns!

That’s politics. You do what it takes, legally and without compromising your positions, to win.

  • http://www.examiner.com/x-1597-Charlotte-Law--Politics-Examiner Mike gamecock DeVine

I doubt Handel has a chance to make up the 2000+ margin with remaining uncounted ballots. I could be wrong. You have the gist of concerns and I do not feel slammed. My purpose in this column is fulfilled and I feel flattered that yet another wishes to make another DeVine with me!

  • http://www.examiner.com/x-1597-Charlotte-Law--Politics-Examiner Mike gamecock DeVine

unjustified. Yes, sometimes negative ads are quite appropriate. Not in this case, and she reaps the benefits with bitter defeat when she should have won going away. I watched the tide turn on the ground here.

  • ywhyvon1

As far as Handel is concered, I didn’t see any negative ads that weren’t true and not half truths like some of the slams I saw from Deals’ campaigne et. al. back at Handel.

that said, I would have liked her to tell us more about how she is going to accomplish her goals and just fend off negative attacks rather than attack .

  • http://thesandsinstitute.org Vassar Bushmills

…but your analysis is airtight. A lot of broken hearts here at RedState as well, but also several good lesson learned, I hope, especially “in how” one should and should not go negative. With so many great tea party positives to extol, it seems Deal’s negatives would have exposed themselves.

I’d rather poke a stick in my eye than see a Huckaby pick win, but hey…

  • ywhyvon1
  • ywhyvon1

How many more votes Handel would have received if the morning of the actual voting, in an off year, would have turned out for Handel if the polls weren’t already projecting that Handel wasn’t up by 5 or 6 points.

We gotta stay on top of thing every time all the time!

How could Handel overcome the negative ads against her if she in turn was slamming the otherside. Now, more than likely, we are going to have to vote for a candidate who is less than squeaky clean record than a canditate who, at this point, has no dirty record, but is a mudslinger.

Can it be as easy as that?

Monday evening, my brother literally came running into the house and told me that Handel couldn’t be the Republican Canditate for Govenor because…..(I don’t even know what he was trying to tell me what Karen had done, something about cocaine) . The point being, in my opinion, if I knew more about Handel’s plan, I could have more persuasively addressed my brother’s concerns at the last minute-the night before the election.

He doesn’t read redstate(trying to finish the Bible the 1st time through, which is more ambitious than myself because I haven,t tried to read it through, But, he has some buzz words/names that appeal to him such as Huckabee(the guy is a christian) and Gingrich(the guy is a has been) . It’s hard to fight that.

Moving on from there, In Georgia, it looks like the good ol’ boy system is alive and well in the NOT metro area. I can only imagine what type of ads Deal was playing outside of Metro Atlanta area, but I;m sure they weren’t pretty.

Also, I have no idea what type of ads Karen was playing in those same outlying areas, but even though I thought Karen should have taken higher ground from what I saw, I know Deals attacks were more vicious and I can only imagine what they were further on our from Atlanta.

    Can anybody tell me?

If nothing else, the old-guard GOP should be quaking in their boots and realizing that people are serious about long-term change. While “our” candidates may lose in these races, the winners have to know that they will be closely watched in the future.

Hold them accountable, and put the fear of God into them to do right by their constituencies. If they do a good job, we need to let them know that they have a chance to hold onto that job in the future. If not, they need to know that they are replaceable……

The real fight is coming over the next 2 years to keep people engaged.

Tea Party Patriots and all others need to dig in and go deep!!!

  • teresakoch

I’ll continue to vote Republican, just to keep Dems out of office. I am hopeful, however, that the Republican party has been sent a message that they need to quit being DemocratLite.

I wasn’t trying to be snarky – just making the point that the ideas behind the Tea Party have validity, and the Republican party needs to recognize that. I’m no fan of a 3-party system – we lose every time in that scenario…..

    Word Up.

I believe,(because I like rainbows and unicorns) that Handel listened to those that would tell her how to fight as opposed to those who would tell her how to “WIN”.

Most campaign people apparently don’t understand the signals coming from the bible reading gun clinging fly over folks.( for anyone that’s interested, I don’t recognize myself in there but I think I have been categorized as such.by the same intelligensje-fine by me)

I feel that very few of these “professional” have a grip on what is happening in America, therefore they are leading their candidates in the wrong direction.

I feel Karen Handel was an honest well meaning candidate who listened to the wrong advice when it came to running a campaign. She did negative campaigning, but it wasn’t beyond the truth so I think some of her integrity stood up but, negative is negative.

If she had to de3fend herself, so be it. Otherwie she should have stayed with the issues and how she was going to do it.

I really feel,(unicorns and rainbows) if the era of telling it like it is ever going to ocurr, it is occurring right now. WE NEED PEOPLE WHO CAN MAKE THE HARD DECISIONS- AND STICK WITH THEM!!!

    IMHO

  • ywhyvon1

as my above typing would suggest.

  • tngal

Benishek tweeted yesterday in MI-01 he lost some but was still at +15. Today he picked up two more giving him 15 up and added. “they should be certifying soon”. Perhaps Mr. Allen will concede realizing the time frame and all. Instead of fighting it Allen could just move. Get out of the yooper districts and set up in a troll district ready for the next election. .

  • tngal

    geez. The mind is fried

  • ywhyvon1

I have been following the race from afar since stupak schtuped. I really hope Dr Dan Pulls Through.

This is one of the recent happenings that have “almost” put me over the edge to do more than just vote or open my mouth about a local candidate.

If Benisheck wins this, I am going to make calls and send money to him

I voted for Handel, sent her a few bucks(couldn’t afford) talked a couple of people into voting for her, but nothing else. I meant to put a yard sign out-too busy;(. But Like everthing in America-New Beginning. Today is the 1st day of the rest of your life(which commercial did that phrase come from?) Now, I’m going to have to have a Deal sign in my yard. That’ll teach me.

On the other Hand(le) A Deal is better than no Deal

  • ywhyvon1

and Karen was green clay that just went through the bisque firing. She still needs to go through the final firing and she will be a hardy vessel.

  • reddog53

Like spiking the ball before crossing the goal line.

What does it tell the absentee voters/military voters about the value of their vote if we end the election before they’ve participated?

All of the above comments were about ‘the party’ and “winning”, which I suppose are important….but I don’t think they are more important than the process.

What if some unscrupulous County registrars just use this as a way to manipulate the result? Hold onto a bunch of early/absentee votes to ensure the outcome is skewed just enough?

I worry about the integrity of the process if we don’t play through.

  • http://www.examiner.com/x-1597-Charlotte-Law--Politics-Examiner Mike gamecock DeVine

I am advised that there weren’t enough votes outstanding to close the gap.
