MEMBER DIARY

Gamecock on the ‘Recommend This’ button and discovering new Redstate friends

MAJOR ROOSTER CROWING: Beginning tomorrow and thru the end of February, I want ZERO recos from anyone that has ever reco’ed gamecock before and…

I will only reco the diaries of those that I have never reco’ed before, so long as I deem them worthy.

I will make clear in subject lines if I would have clicked the “RECOMMEND THIS” button and if regular recommenders of my work wish to let me know that they would have so clicked the button for me, than I would appreciate that gesture. I will also henceforth ALWAYS state the reason(s) why I am recommending a particular diary.

I think this exercise can actually be good for Redstate and certainly this fighting chicken’s ego is sufficiently large and celebrated elsewhere to satisfy same in the interim. Heck, sometimes I just gaze in the mirror of the hen house for hours. Of course, that mirror is on the ceiling and also reflects the visage of the attendant hen…but I digress.

I have never been a part of quid pro quos for promoting Mike gamecock DeVine and never will.

more later from…

I really don’t recall if I’ve ever rec’d one of yours so I’ll hold off anyway. Is there a way to find out? In any event, I do have “favorite” posters that I read because I appreciate reading somebody who believes as I do, for example, heartlander’s pro-life posts. It’s nice to hear someone articulate your own thoughts with supporting evidence. I read your diaries because I find them to be well-thought out and reasonable. I like your comments because you generally seem pretty optimistic, and you often inject some humor. I can get pretty discouraged on any given day at the events in our country, but there are some regulars here who lift my spirits like lineholder and scope. I enjoy reading Moe Lane because, well, it’s Moe.

  • conservativecurmudgeon

Which is why I appreciate this approach. I’ve been reading a bunch of the comments around here today, following the Thomas Crown Affair, and I must say, the whole kerfuffle has me a bit off-put.

I am a relative newcomer here, and I’ve always recommended works that I think need additional recognition. Early on, for example, I noticed that a great number of folks recommended Vassar Bushmills almost as soon as he posted. At first, I found this odd, but then I noticed that he (most of the time) has very insightful, and entertaining things to say. He is GOOD, and thus, recommended. Quite straightforward, as far as I can tell. Likewise to E. Pluribus, Kenny Solomon, and aesthete (along with quite a list of others).

Politics is the art of persuasion, and if you have an important thing to say, oftentimes it is just as important that you say it in a way that people find thoughtful, reasoned, and yes, entertaining. Rhetorical correctitude is mighty important in this recipe. And, Mr. Gamecock, I have almost always enjoyed your pieces, even when I found some picayune detail with which to disagree

The reco system is entrenched and broken beyond repair, and if this strategy leads to a more meritocratic system, I’m all for it.

  • JadedByPolitics

however I have recco’d so many of your brilliant diaries in the past FOUR years (that is a long time)…I immediately enjoyed your writing from the begging GC and will 98% of the time recco, when I disagree I will not…ie: the give Obama a chance diary (still to painful to discuss…lol) which I did not but that tells you how often I do not recco that I remember the one I didn’t.

  • eastbaylarry

Sure some posters have a vast following, I have my own list of ‘must read’ contributors here that I look for, sometimes even before I read the post titles.

But that’s because these are consistantly great posts, not some sort of fan club. (BTW: Always glad to see a post by the Gamecock)

I don’t suppose returning to the 1-5 rating system would make a difference here, but I personally would prefer a less black-and-white rating system. With the current system, if I don’t care for an article, there is no way to show that I read it and thought it sucked without posting a flame comment. Often such a posting feels like a waste of time.

BTW: I would guess that I have reco’d Gamecock posts about 50% of the time, and probably read about 75% of your posts that I’ve noticed. Not all topics are created equal. Many post titles that are about local politics is SC or some other state just don’t usually raise my interest.

  • itrytobenice

I watch for Vassar’s stuff and enjoy it immensely, but I also have started watching for yours as well. I have really appreciated your posts and unless I get too busy and miss it when you post, you can assume I’ll be a regular recommender of yours. I like your style of writing and your curmudgeonly take on life.

Now, you’d better start wearing button up shirts, ’cause the pull-ons won’t go over your head after that! ;-)

p.s. Keep up the good work!

Statesmanship from a senior Redstater… now that’s something to crow about.

I have been reading redstate for a few years now and I don’t think I have ever commented to you, but I ALWAYS read down the list and read your comments. They are usually long and humorous and they standout amongst the crowd.

Understanding the motive of your diary, my viewpoint on the whole matter is that there are many people like myself who, out of fear, will only comment to or recco diary of, someone who they have corresponded with on another diary and consider them a “friend”.
There have been many occasions where I have read a fantastic diary from an unknown poster with no reccos and even though I would like to hit that button, I just would never be the first, let alone the only. I know it sounds silly but it is true.

I believe that the people who are always on the recco list are there for one reason only, They are good. Their names are known because they write very well and consistently and they are the ones that people look for. For instance, I look for Mr. Bushmills’ diaries all the time and recco them all the time because they are good all the time. Yours are too.

There are many long-time “outsiders” here who go mostly ignored, but still read Redstate everyday and contribute once in awhile. They will have their favorites and they will recco those favorites. These are the insights one of those outsiders.

particular food fight but at least show us the courtesy of making a truthful allegation.

Thomas resigned from any contributor/editor/management duties with RedState at least two years ago. Ergo, he’s not a Power that Be. He’s a commenter. He’s a commenter with a unique history, to be sure, but that’s it. Typically, moderators don’t get involved in every little spat between commenters.

Your protestations would also be a lot more credible if most of us hadn’t over time received emails from you asking for one of your diaries to be promoted in addition to flogging your credit repair service.

  • Wayne

that saves me time is used without spare these days. Recommendations are useful in avoiding “preach to the choir” content so often repeated on RedState. Like Mr. Bunce of the old Davy Crocket story my time is entirely focussed on financial survival. Thus, plowing my field and attending to family is about all the time I have beyond sleep and recuperation.

Redstate, its editors and contributors contribute countless hours to keep us informed in the important affairs of state that affect our collective future. All of these voices should be heard when they have something important to say.

It’s worthy to note that Mike’s efforts to direct attention away from himself is the kind of selfless act that is at the heart of conservative thinking.

    My two cents…

  • http://www.examiner.com/x-1597-Charlotte-Law--Politics-Examiner Mike gamecock DeVine

that recommends each others writings with no evidence of same.

The member of the Powers that Be (he’s a frontpager I think, but seems to be absent much of the time from the FP) knows who he is and knows that I left a group three years ago w/i a few days of joining due to what I perceived as the appearance of such quid pro quos. I do not accuse that group of same, but I was very vocal about the fact that I only reco if I deem a column to be worthy based on my criteria and only request recos on the same basis. Heck, I don’t recommend hardly any diaries that are not about issues and which don’t get to the point w/i 3 sentences and I hardly ever reco those with time-consuming videos or audio.

I don’t apologize for marketing my work. It has been a boon for me as I was seeking and did achieve a second career in MSM conservative voice op-eds.

And I don’t even know who the Powers that Be are. Are you one of them? I seriously don’t know. I write columns and love the discussion here. And when I was on PBS, as well as the frequent radio shows I was on during election cycles, I advertise RS as well. Heck, Erick was prepared to send me to Gitmo to cover the first Military Tribunal 4-5 yrs ago for redstate.

But i don’t frequent the corp structure here.

But it seems odd that a former FPer could make these allegations against me with one of the current FPers’ knowing that the allegation is false and yet Thomas does not get called own. Rather, I do!

Want to accuse me of a VERY large email list of people, Most of whom are not redstaters (I write for newspapers and websites)? Guilty and proud.

But to accuse me of quid pro quos and cheating. That’s slander and I resent it.

Ok, so you say that Crown has not done this on behalf of Redstate, fine. I’ll accept your word on that and will henceforth treat TC like I do other liars, and ignore him.

But many here at Redstate know of the stance I took against what TC accuses me of, including one of the FPers, who so far as I know continues to remain silent in the face of this defamation of my character.

And BTW, my expertise in challenges under the Fair Credit Reporting Act are even more valuable today in this tight credit environment. I won two class actions against Equifax, Experian and Trans Union and was part of a group that successfully lobbied to change the burden of proof under the FCRA back in the late 90s; have offered money back gtee services throughout the past 9.5 years and my website accepts payments (The price this week is $480 for 6 months): www.devinelawvista.com.

Moreover, you have been on my mailing list for many years, and yet today is the first time you have ever complained. I will remove you from the list in 5 minutes. If you would like to get back on, you can call me at 678-481-6436.

who suggested one be recommended, or how far it may already be up on the reco list. I reco on whether I agree with the author’s points. Yes, I have my favorite writers here, no I don’t reco everything they write. Sometimes I’m away from the site and miss some altogether. And sometimes I might reco based on a clever use of snark.

But as much as I want to reco this one, I’ll abide by your wishes, GC.

Also sent more verbosely to the Directors…

    1) I like the DeVine Gamecock and have for a long time. He’s a good egg.
    2) Sometimes I get emails from him talking about his diaries and others.
    3) Other people occasionally do the same thing.
    4) Usually I delete them.
    5) Sometimes I read them.

    here’s the important part:

    6) In something like six years of being a member here I’ve never been aware of any quid pro quo, or mutual backscratching arrangement, or some kind of chit racket, or mutual pleasuring society, or whatever, and I’ve never gotten any impression there was one, nor would I be a part of one if there was, because at this point I’d be really ticked that I was left out of the loop all this time [that's a JOKE]. I’ve sure as heck never participated in one.

    and finally

    7) If I ever decide I don’t like getting an occasional email from people on Redstate regarding hard-hitting or important or interesting articles, or just to say hello and ask how things are floating in the gigantic septic tank we call our economy, I’ll let them know.

In the meantime, nothing I’ve seen in 6+ years has raised my eyebrows. Over and out, back to the grind, and everyone try to smile in the face of adversity.

  • streiff

First, I guess I should threaten legal action against you because you hurt my reputation here. I am a frontpager here and, I can’t help but noting, you’re not. TCrown has not been for at least two years. If you want to play the asshat on this issue, in addition to others, be my guest but you don’t know your butt from a hot rock on this.

We know for a fact that the recco list is being gamed because some members of that list have told us. We didn’t need to be told because, contrary to what the little group thinks, we really aren’t idiots beyond allowing this continue.

Mike, don’t fool yourself on your contribution to the site. We’ve helped you much, much more than you have or are helping us. I see the traffic report of diaries everyday. You could stop posting and Mr. Sitemeter couldn’t tell the difference. Don’t take it personal, but the frontpage is what draws the measurable traffic to the site.

  • hoosierteacher

Maybe I’ll get banned for saying so, but shame on you both.

GC ought to drop his crusade to protect his reputation (the point has been made), and some of the staff ought to back away from attacking long time respected members of the site.

You’re both getting personal. It is beneath a moderator to dismiss the diary section (try to run a site while you attack your membership), and it is just as foolish for a long time, popular member to call out a staffer by name and stoke the flames even further.

I’m just a member whose been here for several years and I keep leaving because the tone here is so nasty. But I keep coming back, because I enjoy the front page AND the diaries. I always hope to have thoughtful conversations too.

But last night I caught myself getting disrespectful with Crown (which I regret) as I watched him and his foes go after each other. It was sickening, and reminds me of why I end up less happy after visiting the site.

I love RS enough to keep coming back, but then I see all of the fires on the site and catch myself getting sucked into it. Its frustrating. But really, its worse when the site grownups get sucked in too.

Can’t we all just get along?

    : )

  • Scope

up there in the diary? What a handsome dude, and the kindness just spills from your face. BTW, is that a box of cupcakes in the background? LOL

  • Flagstaff

    but I won’t recco. (^:^)

The thing that makes RedState (that’s the way I like to spell it) better than even the other good bears is the variety of styles and commentary that’s available here.

Some are usually scholarly, like Vassar, and they take full attention to get all the value out of them. There are some true wordsmiths on board, but I won’t mention any more names because I’d be sure to leave important writers unmentioned. Others can be intentionally funny, and maybe sometimes not so intentionally (but that doesn’t happen often). Some writers are sticklers on punctuation, grammar, and capitalization, yet prone to the use of parenthetical phrases to the point of being pedantic (guilty, here), and others are solely interested in getting their ideas out into the ether where we can choose to decipher them or not. The common ground all of us stand on is love of our country and a desire to help it prosper.

The Gamecock combines all of the above, with an additional dose of long, convoluted sentences that can take more than one reading to let the wit, the allusions, and the metaphorical wisdom percolate out them, and he can be quite daunting to follow as he scratches, hunts and pecks his way across the tectonic plates of the political landscape and the electronic page. As he knows, there are times when I’ve thought that his little bird brain has been distracted by trying to work on too many worms at one time, but then again I might have suggested that Archy should take the trouble to jump on the CAPS LOCK key occasionally, and I’d have been wrong in that, too.

Some of you may have noticed that I write at RS in spurts. In between, I may read a little or a lot at RS, and comment a little or a lot, too. Then I may become inspired to churn out several essays (I hate the word “diary.” really, I do) in a few weeks time. (I can’t imagine how other folks can write quality stuff more often, but they do.) When I do finally publish, I contact my friends to let them know I’ve put something up that I hope they read and like. Most of them don’t even “belong” to RedState. The last time I wrote, I asked them if they wanted me to stop notifying them. I was happy that nobody said “Stop!” and several said “Don’t stop! I want to know.” I suppose that could be called “advertising,” but it’s also giving a conversation a chance to start. It was gratifying that my last couple of essays made the top ten, one even hit #1, but I hope it was the content of my commentary, not the spelling of my name, that accomplished that.

To wrap this thing up, my own criteria for recommending any essay is that it is interesting from from to back (even if I disagree with it’s conclusions), or that it says something that I want other people to read, or even that it’s wrong (imho) about something important and needs to be rebutted or has been well-rebutted and THAT is worth reading. Even if it’s slight, but very witty and/or funny, it’ll get my recco. If I read a “Top Ten” essay that I like, I may add my recco as an “attaboy” for a job well done. What I don’t do is recommend an essay just because it has a particular name attached to it.

The top ten list is only useful if it really contains quality material, and I don’t remember reading a bad entry there. Time is short, but we all need to read from the Member Diaries list, too, especially stuff from new writers.

if you read that in what I said I’m sorry because that is not what was meant. What I was replying to was Mike’s opinion that his work has somehow been of huge benefit to the site. It hasn’t. In fact, there probably isn’t any one person who can make that claim. I certainly don’t.

I don’t know if GC is gone or having the same problem.

  • http://908StraightSt.wordpress.com/ mbecker908
  • hoosierteacher

I just regret that both sides have acted so badly (and I include myself).

As I wrote in another comment, this wasn’t a staff versus member thing. But it seems to moving that way now.

Did GC act badly? Sure he did. But a small handful of people that can’t get rec’d to save their lives made some ridiculous claims about him too, and I can see why it set him off. (For the record, I haven’t been a GC rec’er nor do I ever get many recs. Still, I’m not jealous or complaing about it either).

I hate the attacks against staffers that I admire (and I include you, Leon, and Jeff most prominantly). I am also upset about attacks on people that have been long time members and have their own following at the site. It has been a two sided thing. Unfortunately, most of the folks that seem to applaud the current resolution are people I’ve never heard of before, and I’ve been here for several years. This didn’t seem to be a problem when the site was community oriented.

Its been an unfortunate day, and it could have been headed off if people had been told to settle down instead of letting the insults fester all around until it got out of hand. I think a lot of people were allowed to bait one another, and the end result seems one sided.

I remember getting in a spat with a member many years ago, and I think it was you that jumped in with a comment like “You’re both beautiful”. It patched things up right away. Now folks are at each others throats and we have people jumping in to fan the flames higher.

I think the site was terribly unpleasant yesterday. It seems worse now that the site is undergoing yet another purge. It would be great if cooler heads could work things out. I think Thomas Crown and I did an admirable job laying aside our differences. It’s a shame others won’t do so.

First they came for the Paulbots, and I was cool with that because they are not conservatives to begin with. Then they went after the birthers, which I was cool with. Like most of the GOP faithful (according to a recent poll) I have my doubts about Obama’s document, which is used for out of state births. But I dislike the hard core birthers because I think (like a RS front page post said) that Obama was elected for better or worse, and technicalities are for the losers in elections. But then they came for members who have been cornerstones of the community for years based on an instance of bad behavior. We all make mistakes, and GC sure as heck did with his comments to you. But the man was being baited all night about the recs he receives and I can understand the frustration.

Like it or not, some people vote for president on the pro-life issue, and some vote for only fiscal cons. Others vote based on defense, and others are more wholistic. And a lot of us vote based on which party the guy comes from. Rec’s work the same way. I rec’d a post while pointing out that I didn’t care about the conspirital tone of it. GC rec’d the post, and smeone jumped in and said he must be rec’ing it because of some quid pro quo, which is silly. People rec others like they vote for president, and some people might rec his posts because they admire him. If Bill Buckley was writing at RS, I might rec him to encourage more posts. GC has a long and reputable list of writing accomplishments outside of RS, and it isn’t a stretch to think people like his writing here and rec him quickly. He was baited all night last night, and then wrote something stupid.

We were all quick to forgive our site manager when he wrote or said something foolish about something political and likening it to “bestiality”, and I know I’ve written and said things I would like to take back to. The worse things we say are when we’re angry, often because someone has attacked us or something we believe in and we write something foolish in haste. I did it myself last night.

It isn’t pleasant to have a site full of hateful vitriol against one another. It is just as unpleasant to have a site where there is no “community”, because everything is dicated to us. For example, I’m on the ground in Indiana and know the respect the voters here have for Dan Coats. Our site’s front page attacked him for being to old and having left his job to serve in the state dept. I would expect the national party to misread us in our state, but I would have hoped a DC or GA based site would listen to the ground troops in Indiana (who turned out to be right). We don’t like being dictated to by outsiders. But the worst point came when Coats won the primary, and we still had to hear a parting shot on the front page (which was hardly a tepid endorsement).

As I’ve said before it isn’t “our site”, it belongs to the staff. That’s how it should be, and they set the rules. But it is far from the community site it used to be, and seems to be more about “the front page” and tv and radio appearances than about a community of people getting together to share ideas. Our political leaders think they run the country and don’t work for us. I appreciate that the staff (albeit volunteer) doesn’t work for us, they work for Eagle. And I guess that the advertisers are the customers (though I wish we could get rid of Stansberry, with their record of conspiracies and fines). It would just be nice for the members to have a role too. Right now, the site has become so top/down that we’re even talking about losing the rec feature (because the results don’t please some people).

Its all a terrible shame. I hope, aside from further bannings, that the leadership on the site can consider some changes to how moderating is accomplished, and how members (and staff) are treated. This “firing on the protesters” thing, and the behavior of some of the protesters as well, are both just horrible.

As a long time visitor to RS, I’d like to see it become a more adult friendly atmosphere. While some of the personalities on the site seem to be acsending in the media and influence sphere (which is a good thing), the site itself seems to be disintegrating. The behavior of some individuals is to blame, and the over reaction is just as repugnant.

That’s just my opinion, and I hope it doesn’t come across as disrespectful. I appreciate the hard work of Erick and the staff, and like anyone else, I have some disagreements with how some things work. But I always find myself coming back to Red State because, despite a lot of the dysfunctionality, it is still family. I hope nothing I’ve said rises to a bannable level. I’m just trying to express what I’m thinking.

Speaking of dysfunctional familes, I hope my brother GC is big enough to apologize for talking back to mom, and I hope dad (Erick) doesn’t think breaking GC’s arm is the best way to react.

Reconcilliation and forgiveness are as much a part of Christianity as justice. Especially where family is concerned.
