Herman Cain and the 999 lives of Cain’t never could do nuthin’

Reagan’s tax rate cuts that returned America to prosperity were deemed “unrealistic” voodoo economics at this stage of his campaign. Herman Cain sticks another needle in that voodoo doll!

President Ronald Reagan’s voodoo not only passed, but worked. Vice President George H.W. Bush gave up voodoo detection until he rode Reagan’s coattails to office and passed a lobbyist/establishment friendly tax hike that betrayed lip reading.

If only doomsayers had less lives that cats

When even this gamecock’s favorite conservative tea partier-friendly website highlight’s surrender to any notion of scrapping the establishment-friendly tax code, we know that the battle to save America remains formidable despite the biggest GOP election victory in over 60 years in 2010.

The new front-runner for the Republican Party presidential nomination dominated the recent Bloomberg debate in New Hampshire by skilfully defending his plan against his media and GOP opponents to scrap the current tax code (and its scores of taxes, deductions, exemptions and subsidies on and from new-born babies to estates of the dead) in favor of just three taxes assessed at 9% on personal income, corporate income and the sales of new goods.

Now enter the anonymous streiff at Redstate who declares that Cain’s 9-9-9 Plan relies “entirely on hope…that runs contrary to everything we know about human nature and the way government operates.” Really? Entirely on hope contrary to everything we know?

Because “armies of lobbyists” and Democrat filibuster threats? Do these threats only exist against 9-9-9 tax bills back by Herman Cain? Of course not. Don’t they exist against any tax bill”? Of course they do and are we to swallow the notion that FAIR Tax promoters are relying on less hope while they require repeal of the Sixteenth Amendment by two-thirds of both houses of Congress and three-fourths of the states?

All a President Cain need do is follow an easier Reagan-like path, which ended up winning over Democrat Boll Weevils while defeating armies of lobbyists and Democratic party majorities in Congress, thanks to a strong mandate from the voters. Cain faces the prospect of an even greater electoral win and attendant mandate in a District of Columbia devoid of a Democratic Party majority in either house of Congress.

Caint never could do nothin’

We are admonished to give up the hope for bold tax reform because we “don’t have to be a genius to see how the 9-9-9 movie will end. It will be 10-10-10…”.

Human beings screwed up Eden, the present tax code and everything in between. They screwed up Reagan’s tax code. Does how it ended up negate the good of the 25-year boom, the likes of which Earth has never seen? Perish the thought.

Yes, we will always have to be viligent  in defense of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness, including the pollution of tax codes. All the more reason to clean them up from time to time! Like maybe when we have the biggest GOP electoral victories since 1948 and hold the White House, House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate? Feels right.

Notwithstanding the proposed requirement that only a two-thirds vote of Congress, yes, subsequent Congresses would not be bound thereby and most assuredly would adulterate 9-9-9. But not before the boom that human nature assures will follow its passage.  Time and human nature’s desire to continue the good times will deter the raising of the rates to dreaded double digits and maybe this time conservatives can elect those that will keep the voting public informed of the danger returns by Carters and Obamas pose.

No, there is no mechanism to prevent present and future humans from screwing up even fought and died for Miracles in Philadelphia, but could we enjoy recoveries and wait for the recessions to bemoan human nature’s bad side?

The extreme slashing of the rates, simplification, and broadening of the base outweighs the danger of adding a new kind of tax. And maybe would could go ahead and disabuse the FAIR Tax advocate’s notion of the end of government “services” to collect revenue internally, but at least we won’t be saddled with pre-bate management of every American’s spending habits. And, yes, since I have seen the sales tax codes of Georgia I never bought the notion that sales taxes are less apt to balloon into a political tax code any less than income tax codes.

The 9-9-9 Plan can be seen as  mandate grater than Reagan’s mandate between now and Inauguration Day 2013 so that what little power Democrats have left wouldn’t dare be exercised to stop it. Arguably, Republicans could pass the plan with only 51 votes via the budget or invoke the new Reid anti-60 vote majority Rule to kill filibuster threats.

In any event, there will be no greater opportunity for bold action that after the election that rids America of the scourge of Obama as re-educated voters hold liberal economics accountable for its collasal failures.

Cain can

The reason Cain is now leading the polls is due to his bold Rx that fits the size of the crisis we face in Great Depression II. It doesn’t help conservatives and tea partiers as we fight off the GOP establishment and media push for us to settle for Mitt Romney and his lobbying army- and establishment-loved mere pivot off the current tax code.

It helps even less for some on our side to deride 9-9-9 with the Hope half of President Barack Obama’s vacuous campaign slogan. What those wedded to concurrent repeal of the 16th Amendment before we can take bold action to unleash Atlases from four years of shrugging need, is to Change their tune. The hope of such a repeal is truly unrealistic.

Passage of Cain’s 9-9-9  can and should be the first act of the Republican Administration and Congress 15 months from next Thursday.

I haven’t had a chance to read your diary yet, but I will try to do so tonight. I’ll count that as my penance for being so wrong about the whole diary/not a diary thing. Just don’t count on it changing my mind at this point.

An eloquent defense Mike, I love it. Incrementalism only gets us one place. We can’t be afraid of bold action. And this is the time, when so much sucks, that people are looking for something concrete enough to have a chance of making a positive difference for them.

There’s no better time than now.

  • beach91

Nice post! I always enjoy reading your diaries. Cain’s plan is a good thing at this point and is moving me over to his side of the camp. Would a Cain-Gingrich ticket be nice or what?

The only obstacle that truly stands in Cain’s way at this point is the ongoing attempt at self-fulfilling prophecy by folks like streiff and O’Reilly: “Cain can’t win, so let’s move on”; “the tax plan is a waste of time because Congress won’t pass it and Congress will change it later.”

If Herman Cain has shown anything it is that he is a remarkably durable campaigner and can win, simply because the more people see and hear him the more they like him and what he has to say. Romney is the establishment’s choice but honestly, has no real zing. People are not responding to him as he waits for the nomination to fall in his lap while he practices saying all the right things at all the right times.

Cain is electable. Cain can win. I salivate at the thought of watching Cain face down Obama in face-to-face debates.

If not Cain, who? If not now, when?

If we could repeal the 16th amendment, we could have the full blown Fair Tax, too, and wouldn’t have to settle for the evil stepsister.

I support the Fair Tax, but I DO NOT support 9-9-9! I truly don’t believe it will be revenue neutral.

  • http://www.examiner.com/x-1597-Charlotte-Law--Politics-Examiner Mike gamecock DeVine

So does that mean we can never truly reform the tax code? Even to single digit rates. With 9-9-9.

This country is too divided to pass an amendment for Baseball, hot dogs, apple pie and/or Chevrolet, so its time for evryone to grow up realize there is no Santa Claus and we will never repeal the 16th Amendment.

  • http://www.examiner.com/x-1597-Charlotte-Law--Politics-Examiner Mike gamecock DeVine

even for the young, whose voting rights were the subject of the last amendment this country was united enough to pass 2/3 of both houses of Congress and 3/4 of the states, that was not introduced after the second half odf the 20th century.

Maybe it could be done via the convention method, but even then, you are going to face very good arguments for not putting all our bread in one sales tax basket either. All taxes suck, even the precious FAIR tax, especially in a nation that hasn’t the luxury of repressing consumption too much. To stay a superpower and hence, FREE from tyrants, we MUST have consumer driven growth, period. The income tax has obvious flaws too, but it also has advantages over other types.

There is no panacea for tax codes growing over time. That’s why we will always have to urge them periodically. This is the nature of human beings. Deal with it.

I could write a column in 15 minutes that makes a strong case that a modified flat tax is superior to the 9-9-9 plan, but I’m waiting to see if anyone else will. But it seems that those against 9-9-9 are all FAIR Tax dreamers of repealing constitutional amendments or passing them before we purge the current jobs killing monstrosity.

Must I do all the work? smile

  • http://www.examiner.com/x-1597-Charlotte-Law--Politics-Examiner Mike gamecock DeVine

Its a nightmare. The bigger dream is that the 16th will ever be repealed. Let’s get realistic, ‘k? smile

  • http://www.nighttwister.com NightTwister

It’s odd that I’d actually have to write that.

Cain is already adding exceptions for this, and exceptions for that. He has yet to pander to everyone since his plan is still a work in progress.

  • http://www.examiner.com/x-1597-Charlotte-Law--Politics-Examiner Mike gamecock DeVine

I certainly expect a huge GOP win in 2012 especially after 2010′s GOP best since 1948.

And yes, I would like to see some exceptions like a standard deduction for low income up to $8-12K and/or a home mtg deduction. So?

There is no panacea that prevents future tax code messes and certainly exceptions are better than that FAIR Tax pre-bate monstrosity.

What matters most is starting all over and trashing the current tax code.

Its not 9-9-9 is perfect or Cain sucks. Let’s all be constructive and not just naysayers.

Its odd I’d actually have to write that…smile.

  • http://www.nighttwister.com NightTwister

Cain isn’t qualified in the least. You can tell his fishing, groping, hoping. Reagan had plans, and didn’t waver whether people didn’t like them or not.

It’s not about the plan……it’s about the planner.

  • http://www.nighttwister.com NightTwister

    Apparent failure…

  • http://www.examiner.com/x-1597-Charlotte-Law--Politics-Examiner Mike gamecock DeVine

That he is such an outspoken black conservative that has had to endure the opprobrium of most other blacks his whole life and his courageous statements about Dem Plantation owners and brainwashed liberal blacks, gives me confidence that he has Reagan-like stuff in him. And I would bet that Ronnie Reagan is smiling a 9x9x9 smile at Herman’s plans as we speak. His plans were also derided as simplistic and Reagan retorted that many answers are simply, but hard.

I too would favor a Herman Cain with some elected executive experience, but would also have favored a younger Reagan.

We have to make choices. I have looked at the choices. I lean to Cain, who is very much qualified.

  • http://www.examiner.com/x-1597-Charlotte-Law--Politics-Examiner Mike gamecock DeVine

So who are these “immensely more qualified” candidates that you would vote for?

the anti-cain’s are rabid. Which is not fair to anyone, anywhere. We’ve heard from Romney and Perry and Paul for years. We’ve seen them in action.

Cain represents an unknown and the nay sayers would actually need to research the man a lot to understand what he’s about. they are not going to put in the effort.

Hey, I had other favorites too like newt, pawlenty and bachman. But in doing the research I’m very comfortable with Cain knowing his stands on immigration, bible, abortion, 2nd amendment, israel, global warming, etc. And he’s got the momentum where the others have either dropped out or soon may be forced to.

Can’t stand it when someone shoves a candidate in my face and implies you will vote for him or Obama wins and its all your fault! I don’t do threats well.

We should be rallying around the fact the CLASS act part of obamacare is gone. Something we can all argree on.

Hence the need to actually repeal the law, not just have a President come in and decide not to enforce a law passed by Congress.

The Rule of Law is dead. That Obama for small favors….he also decided not to enforce DOMA. What;s next, the civil rights act for whites…oh yeah that law only applies to minorities thx to he and Holder too.

I’ve also wondered about whether or not we’d see the “financial compensation for something that really stinks” route, too. Meaning, where would they either (1) try to cut costs or (2) increase costs in order to compensate for the fact that CLASS is a major fail.

  • tngal

Whereas Reagan thought amnesty was a spiffy idea, Cain believes you need to become a legal citizen before you enjoy what the country has to offer.

No one is claiming he’s Reagan. But he’s pushing things to the forefront. Like our woeful excuse for a tax system. That’s a good thing because it will get the masses involved.

I think I also heard him say that revenues will equal expenditures in the first budget he submits to Congress. if so, it will be interesting to see the required spending cuts of 40% of the previous years budget! Of course I would expect that revenues will be up given the massive supply side effect of 9-9-9 or the tweaked version the GOP Congress will pass. I think Paul Ryan, Rand Paul and Herman Cain will make a great Restore America team!

I’m not saying Cain’s perfect, but neither was reagan (caseinpoint, the amnesty.) Reagan had issues just like others. No candidate is perfect but Herman’s good utshines any questions right now. I’m not worried about his 999. It takes out many loopholes and removes several other hidden taxes that its good on that fact alone. I don’t see it adding a tax, rather substituting a more fair one for several really bad ones.

The only time I’ve cringed was when he mentioned Uzbeki, beki, beki, beki, stan, stan. I thought, good grief herman why did you say that? But he’s right, he’ll know all about the place when it comes time to go there. There really are too many stans anyway.

  • aesthete

about Uzbekistan? What we are currently doing in Afghanistan is not about national security; it is about helping Afghanstan get on its feet. (A goal that I look askance upon, but I digress.) Given that Uzbekistan thus far has been important to us only because it hosts an AF base appropriate for logistics into Central Asia, and given that the importance of Central Asia for the US hinges on Afghanistan, I’d say that he was quite accurate in characterizing Uzbekistan as a country that is not “critical to focusing on national security”.

  • tngal

you misunderstand me. Listen to the line when he says it. The clip is out there. When you hear it the first time or read it in a story it can come across as he doesn’t know where it is or worse doesn’t care about its relevance to us. Notice I said “can come across” that way. I was afraid many would get that interpretation when he first said it, because there are a lot of stans out there. Uzbek, kurdistan,, afghanistan, pakistan, tadjikistan (I know I butchered the spellings.)

Much like “I watch cnn but I’m not sure I can tell you the difference in iraq and iran”. See that’s the way it is with a lot of people. They’re sound alike, far off countries and most don’t pay attention to them until something happens to make them hit home.

I was fearful of the glib manner in which it was put out and how it might be misconstrued. People are hunting for anything against him right now.

  • aesthete

Well, that’s a perfectly fair criticism. I don’t think it will hurt him overmuch, though, so long as it doesn’t become a recurring feature: the general public really isn’t too enchanted with conventional Republican foreign policy (or that of Democrats, for that matter), and as a rule, Americans don’t concern themselves about countries that don’t concern them. If Cain can spin his lack of concern as mirroring that of the American public, and for similar reasons, it could end up being a slight plus for him all else being equal.
