SC teaches its gamecock a lesson: Newt is acceptable

Our native state teaches the GOP and its now Stone Mountain of Georgia-roosted gamecock a lesson: Newt is acceptable to tea partier conservatives

Mike DeVine Law Gamecock is humbled.

That so many voters that have earned my respect for so many years have chosen to support Newt Gingrich over Mitt Romney convinces me that Mitt is not so much better than Newt, that a vote for the former Speaker is not acceptable. Newt is a worthy fighter… and the crow and humble pie ordered herehere and here… needed more sugar and salt, respectively, thank you very much.

I still plan to vote for Mitt on Super Tuesday, but I don’t dismiss the primary voters of my native home state lightly. If Newt can give up the vague Bain Capital attacks and show mature discipline over the next months, he can win my enthusiastic support for the nomination and, of course, in the general election.

Romney ought to have to prove himself worthy to bear the mantle of the Party of Lincoln and Reagan as much as Gingrich ought.

May the best man win, I will be open to the idea that we need a street fighter just now, and …much more later…

As a tea partier in spirit, I accept the wisdom of the tea partiers of SC.

  • http://travismonitor.blogspot.com Freedoms Truth

GC, your Newt concerns are valid.

But the lesson is that the GOP primary electorate wants a conserrvative who stands up and FIGHTS for conservative ideas, values and agenda.

We dont want a status quo politician.

We are frogs who know that a Newt with warts will always be better than a stork.

Tonight, Gingrich is praising all 4 candidates. Let’s get the best person we can to defeat the stork! SC says its Gingrich.

  • http://travismonitor.blogspot.com Freedoms Truth

    … on 2012 race.

Gingrich, lambasting Obama on pipeline decision:
“An American President who can make a Canadian-Chinese partnership is a danger to the United States.”

I am satisfied that he will be capable of beating Obama. feels right…more later..as if….smile

Did anyone think Newt looked angry? No! He showed a great level of class in his praise of his fellow GOP hopefuls. His contrast between him and Obama was excellent. He wants to be the President of the Paycheck vs. The President of Dependency.

That theme is something every parent teaches their child: You grow up, you find something you love, you work toward your goal, you build self-esteem and hence self pride. That is a paycheck, that is a career, that is home ownership, that is starting a business and that is following your dreams. That is AMERICA!! Contrast that with Obama’s Handout, America the second hand power, class warfare, entitlements, no future, no dreams and only big government can safe you! In a general election, that contrast in beliefs played out effectively, can win over many independents and even democrats!

  • JSobieski

For Newt to beat Romney, he will have to assure (by his behavior, not his words) that he is sufficiently disciplined and steady to beat Obama and to be President.

Conversely, for Romney to beat Newt, Romney will have to show some agility while being challenged, and articulate conservatism to some degree. Romney needs to show that he is running to be more than a SQ “I won’t make things worse” caretaker.

An extended contest is in everyone’s best interest.

Newt’s speech tonight shows that Newt at least knows what he needs to do.

Lets see how Romney responds. If I was Romney, I would talk about SPECIFICS—-explain some ideas on medicare reform, sell those ideas in the campaign, etc.

  • http://www.examiner.com/x-1597-Charlotte-Law--Politics-Examiner Mike gamecock DeVine

I’m pulling for him to do well…

If he can be this disciplined, Newt has a real shot.

I posted my humble impression of this day, Newts speech, and what it means to all of us on another thread. I should have put it here. Oh well. Just saying that Newt gives every indication of understanding the sacred trust that has been put into his hands today and the he fully intends to rise to the occasion.

He and his family have my prayers. We need a fighter with an enormous brain to win our country back. He has the opportunity now to show he can be trusted with the presidency. Go Newt!

And God bless and reward Governor Perry for his unselfishness and wisdom.

  • APA Guy

I haven’t seen a shred of evidence to convince me that Romney can successfully combat Newt’s criticisms of him, while Newt has been known to show class and grace while attacking when necessary. One (Gingrich) seems far more ready to pull the right strings while the other seems unprepared to be challenged defend his record (Romney).

In all truth, Romney looks like a candidate who was expecting to waltz through the primaries and now has no idea how to get his mojo back (if he ever had any). Newt looks like he came prepared for a 15-round prize fight.

  • azaeroprof

There’s enough of us Palinistas to go along with the Perryites finding ourselves pulling for a guy whose campaign we didn’t take very seriously at first. But campaigns often go off in unpredictable directions, and people we thought couldn’t lose often fall, and people we thought didn’t stand a chance get swept in on landslides.

I’m quite happy to be on Team Newt for 2012, a place I wouldn’t have guessed to be in a million years if you had asked me as recently as a year ago.

  • David123

Actually, at one point he was only a heartbeat and a blue dress away.

    :-)

  • aesthete

but it is so good to see you back on RS. Have to say it, I would have preferred Palin to any of the candidates in the running ATM.

  • azaeroprof

Obviously, I agree with you. ;)

You and I both grew up in the upstate of SC. They aren’t stupid people. They work hard, play hard, and fight tooth and nail when it’s required of them. They aren’t much inclined to buy into the kind of “sophistication” that leads down paths of foolishness. They’re very well grounded in reality.

They are very conservative people. You know that as well as I do. I’m guessing that you also know that it probably caused them more of an inner struggle than it may have seemed on the surface to support Newt in the manner that they have.

There’s just so much at stake this time against Obama. We do need a fighter in our corner. Actually, we need all of them that we can get. I hope they both fight, Mike. I hope they fight for this nation and its people. I hope they fight to restore the vision that our founding fathers had for this country.

And I hope we’ll be fighting with them all the way.

  • APA Guy

Lord knows I have eaten my share, my friend :)

  • chbroussard

who have said they won’t vote for any one other than their candidate in the General Election, will vote for the Constitution Party, or not vote at all, I would urge them to read Mr. DeVine’s diary. I was a Perry supporter but moved to the Gingrich camp after my guy withdrew. Newt might implode down the road or things may come out about his past that, in fact, do make him unelectable. If that happens, though I do not trust Mr. Romney, I will vote for him and will also eat any leftovers from GC’s plate of crow.

Sorry, not voting for Romney.. not with anyone yet..

But your points on Newt’s temperment and judgement are valid.

Problem with Romney is that he isnt answering basic questions straight. It re-enforces his persona of doing what ever it takes to get elected.

If he were start giving straight answers – he might start going somewhere.

I understand your thinking and respect your decision to still vote for Mitt. Heck, if Mitt showed any fight at all, I’d likely be supporting him too.

I really hope Newt chooses Perry for VP and he accepts. I think it would calm the fears of socons, and show people that Republicans are serious about jobs.

Even though I’m still grazing over the candidate buffet. I’m searching for red meat amongst all the offerings but can’t seem to find it. A Prime rib candidate would be nice, but it looks like I’m not getting that this year.

  • jakeofalltrades

No red-blooded conservative can help getting excited by Newt. It’s insidious; he’ll start to make you grin with his words, and before long you’re cheering him, even though you’re for Romney!

If he performs well in Florida – doesn’t even need to win – it could prove Newt is the one to face Obama rather than Mitt.

  • tngal

    (kowlaski)

Romney admits he made a mistake. And he’s pullin out the 2010′s and estimated 2011 returns. Admitting you made a mistake is a good thing. THis might stop some of the bleeding.

(check Hot Air, Drudge, all other usual places for more on this)

I’m glad to see it happening. Regardless of what the outcome ends up being, with the way things were going, people were settling into this comfort zone of acceptance to the electability and inevitability memes. Safe and comfortable it may be…inspiring it is not!

I may be totally wrong about this, but I think the enthusiasm factor could make a difference when it comes to swaying Independents. So I’m glad to see more of the fighting spirit on our side.

  • jakeofalltrades

And lopsided primary victories also crack the general election electability meme.

Let’s see if Newt can finish it off.

  • http://www.examiner.com/x-1597-Charlotte-Law--Politics-Examiner Mike gamecock DeVine

imho and I will write some columns making that point. It seems to me that Newt needs help either from the northeast, midwest and/or that the GOP would do well to consider a Rubio, Watts, Blackwell or Bachmann.

    1 crow, plucked and cleaned.

Place crow in a ziploc bag with 3 tbsp spice mix (below) and 1 cup cider vinegar overnight. (crow is tough)

Obtain a small can. Starbucks makes a double-shot canned coffee that I can’t recommend drinking, but the can is the right size for a healthy-sized crow.

Fill can half full with the beer of your choice.
    Add remaining spice mix.
Insert can into crow and balance in a baking dish.
Bake at 350 for 20 minutes per pound or until juices run clear.
Alternately, cook on the grill .. be careful not to scorch the feet!

    Spice mix:

Add the following ingredients to a clean measuring cup:

    2 tbsp paprika
    1 1/2 tbsp brown sugar
1 tbsp fresh ground black pepper
    1 tsp garlic powder
    1/2 tsp onion powder
    1/2 tsp allspice
1/2 tsp salt (or to taste)
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper (or to taste)

If cooking in an oven, consider 1/4 tsp liquid smoke

    Whisk ingredients to mix.

Serve with a side of green peas.

To answer your point above, I find it’s useful to remember that most of these self-identified “conservatives” aren’t ideologically so, they’re more taking the “cafeteria option”, a dollop of social-conservative, a spoonful of fiscal-conservative, and a nice slice of populist pie…

This, by the way, is why I haven’t been nearly as hard on Gingrich (or Perry) over the Bain criticism – it’s not the ideologues they need to convince to come off the sidelines, it’s the pragmatic Tea Partiers who are needed.

that for the last three years of his Presidency (at least) he hid under the desk in the Oval Office. He gave the Dems & media free reign to play whack-a-mole and never opened his mouth. Except to admit they were right, when they were clearly wrong (see 16 words).

One of my fears with Mitt is that he’ll make GWB look like the Spartan Army when he starts taking serious policy criticism. If he can’t defend himself against stuff that’s been obvious for at least five years and is relative easy to defend, he’ll never make it when it comes to why he wants to let poor people die on the hospital steps by eliminating OCare.

I liked Perry because he had a reputation as a no holds barred fighter. Well, the fighter stayed home in his case, but Newt isn’t concerned whose “feelings” he hurts. He’s called out O as the food stamp POTUS and defended it robustly time and again. He’s not a nice man. I like that a lot.

Newt Gingrich is Bush on steroids. He loves big government ideas more than any president since his hero FDR – who he called the greatest President of the 20th century – and he’s even better than Bush packaging his socialism in the type of red-meat that appeals to the know-nothings who see politics essentially as an arena to “fight” and value red-meat above anything else.

  • Right Reason

Secondly, calling all those who refuse to genuflect before the party elders “know-nothings” isn’t exactly the way to win friends and influence people.
