Must Egypt hold 52 Americans for 444 days before we cut off aid?
President Barack Hussein Obama is no James Earl Carter
Before “extremists” overthrew the America’s ally in the Shah of Iran, then President Carter signaled his willingness, and even desire, to work with the Ayatollah Khomeini, since he was a “religious” man. Before the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan, Carter famously chided his fellow Americans for their “inordinate fear” of Communism. But, unlike the Citizen of the World now occupying the White House, Carter changed policies to better reflectAmerican interests given new facts on the ground. That the Democrat from Georgia hadn’t correctly calculated ordinate fears of Communism and radical Islam before he was Inaugurated was a function of the refusal of his party to face realities, both foreign, domestic and economic since the passing of JFK, but I digress…or do I?
President Obama gave this conservative a fleeting moment of hope last week when he, candidly in my view, declared:
“I don’t think we would consider them [Egypt] an ally…”
The “Leader of the Free World” (Before Obama we never put that phrase is derisive quotes, btw) went on to explain that neither was Egypt an enemy before placing their ostrich-like head securely back in the sand and declaring that the mobs now free to storm embassies in the post-Mubarak (when Egypt was an ally), pro-Muslim Brotherhood world, are not anti-American but are merely and justifiably upset about an obscure anti-The Prophet Mohammed movie made by Christians in America, one of whom was roused from his California bed between 1-2am PST for a ”voluntary” discussionof the terms of his probation for bank fraud charges of several years ago.
Do Democrats never learn? After being dispatched by Ronaldus Maxus, Citizen Jimmy Carter devolved away from his hawkish stance towards radical Islam and the USSR even before the Berlin Wall fell. In 2003, former President Bill Clinton told liberal friends in Davos that Iran’s government progressives were the ones he most admired in the region. Throughout this period, Barry Sotero aka Barack Obama ate dog at his Muslim step dad’s table in Indonesia before parking his butt in the pews of Rev. Jeremiah Wright for the first of 20 years of worship. Is it any wonder that he actually favored that the most important Arab country on earth be ruled by the progenitors of al Qaeda?
Democrats since JFK haven’t learned the lessons of his and Reagan’s supply side economics after 50 years, so why should we expect them to better discern allies and enemies, but as to the latter, foreign correspondent extraordinaire, Michael Totten, thinks events will force change:
Egypt is looking more like post-1979 Iran every day.
Cairo has issued international arrest warrants for eight Americans—seven of them Coptic Christians from Egypt—who are allegedly involved with the anti-Mohammad video everyone’s rioting over. The prosecutor’s office also issued a warrant for Terry Jones, the Koran-burning nutjob in Florida, just because, and says if convicted the defendants may get the death penalty.
Mahmoud Salem (aka “Sandmonkey”) was interviewed on CNN yesterday. He says the new Muslim Brotherhood government is much more oppressive than the Mubarak regime. That should have been obvious to everyone in advance, though astonishingly it was not. And Mahmoud is hardly a Mubarak apologist. He was one of the most outspoken critics of the ancien régime in the world, and he was arrested and beaten for it.
He also says explicitly that Egypt’s government isn’t an ally and that “if the United States wants to cut the aid [money], please, do it…The majority of the aid goes to the military anyway. We don’t see it.”
…how long is the United States going to pretend that Egypt is still friendly? The government just threatened individual American citizens by name with arrest and execution. Will the Muslim Brotherhood regime have to take hostile action against American citizens before something changes?
Perhaps. But even Barack Obama has figured out that Egypt is no longer an ally. He said so on television. He’s having a hard time standing by that statement because he’s Obama, but he knows. He knows. We’re bound to break off with Cairo at some point whether we like it or not.
Better sooner than later we think. Meanwhile, the Obama Administration claims it can’t comment further on how a spontaneous reaction to a video led to the assassination of America’s ambassador to Libya, since the FBI has officially opened an investigation? Which reminds me, when did the FBI officially open an investigation into the results of the economic policies of the Obama Administration and the resulting unemployment and drop in family income?
