MEMBER DIARY

One vote can make S.C. Republican only black member of U.S.Senate

Sen. Jim DeMint’s resignation to accept the presidency of the Heritage Foundation opens the door for Palmetto State Governor to appoint Rep. Tim Scott to replace him replacement in January.

Soon after President Barack Obama was re-elected, prominent liberals denounced those that voted against him as racist by comparing the red state/blue state divide on the electoral map of the Election of 2012 with the Union blue state/Confederacy grey state map of the 1861-1865 War Between the States. That war started when rebel forces surrounding Charleston Harbor fired on U.S. Army forces under siege at Fort Sumter.

Seven score and five years after Appomattox, the congressional district serving Charleston elected a black man to represent them in the U.S. House of Representatives instead of the son of the most prominent politician in the state’s history, Strom Thurmond.

Tim Scott, re-elected in 2012, has served the First Congressional District with tea partier distinction. His availability for a historic appointment gives his South Carolina  Republican Party colleague and first Indian-American woman to be elected governor of a state in the U.S. a chance to strike a major blow against the Democratic Party/Media narrative blaming Mitt Romney’s defeat on supposed GOP hostility to minorities.

The district Rep. Scott has won twice with over 65% of vote is over 80% white.

Governor Haley, vote Scott in 2013!

    I like it too!

    I like it three!

But, we are talking about the GOP here … this is a party that has absolutely no understanding of image or branding. Having Tim Scott in the Senate would be something that would be very difficult for liberals to countenance.

Which is why Nikki Haley’s consultants would almost certainly advise her not to appoint Tim Scott because “Bipartisanship” and it would offend liberals and …

I’m all in for Tim Scott….but because of his values and not his skin color! While it would serve a branding message, it should be made clear it’s based upon his qualifications only and I’m certain you agree GC.

I get your point, but I am not sure this makes sense: “. . . a chance to strike a major blow against the Democratic Party/Media narrative blaming Mitt Romney’s defeat on supposed GOP hostility to minorities.”

“Supposed GOP hostility to minorities” lead to Romney’s defeat? Perhaps you meant to say that SC has a chance “strike a major blow against the Democratic Party/Media narrative” blaming Obama’s poor showing in the South on supposed GOP hostility to minorities?

Also, the your point would be better made by Scott actually winning reelection rather than simply being appointed, but I assume he would be a shoe in for re-election, wouldn’t he?

I like it because he is a conservative,. As for being black, BFD. The Dems and the press will brand him an Uncle Tom just like they do every Republican, conservative black. The 98% of blacks who voted for Obama won’t be impressed either because the majority of them are collecting a government paycheck either from welfare or by working at an airport.

    Probably.

But we also need to think about who would challenge Graham.

The DemMedia narrative (lie) is that minorities don’t vote for us because we are out and out racists, hostile to minorities or at least uncaring about them. This charge is not limited to the Southern Republicans; and an appointment of a black by a Minority woman in SC would highlight what a BIG LIE is the charge against us in the flesh in a dramatic way. Scott has already won an 80%+ white congressional district and yes, would be a shoo-in for re-election.

    Trey Gowdy

  • commonsenseobserver

The guy’s sure fiery enough. ^^

You know, Jenny Sanford can be appointed to replace DeMint, and then Scott can primary Graham.
    Or the other way round.

I want Scott in and for Trey Gowdy to primary DeMint. Scott is a two-fer in terms of impact against the DemMedia narrative. His mere presence in the Senate refutes the racism narrative.
