Promoted from the diaries by Jeff. While I’ve registered my disagreement with sentiments like those contained in this diary, and have publicly expressed my desire for Ms. Palin to disappear from the public political eye as quickly as possible now that she has left the office to which she was elected, this diary is both well-written and expressive of the enthusiasm that far-from-insignificant number of die-hard Palin fans share, and it represents a point of view I recognize as every bit as valid as my own on the matter. -JE
Back in the mid 1990’s The Chrysler Corporation went public with a really new and exciting business model. The company best known for the K-car and inventing the mini-van at that point in time, had spent a lot of time behind the scenes to totally remake the company. They threw everything out, and started fresh. New “cab-forward” styling on their cars, and a brand new pickup truck, the first completely new truck in 25 years, and a completely refocused management, design, and manufacturing team.
Chrysler became the most exciting car company around. Envied by the other manufacturers. It really was the rebirth of a company that since the it’s formation had always been recognized as one of the best at engineering. This brought Chrysler back in a big way. Record sales, especially in trucks, helped Chrysler show healthy profits. If fact, Chrysler became so successful, Mercedes-Benz would soon come knocking with a bundle of cash and an offer!
The Dodge Division of Chrysler was in a really good place. They not only had a pick-up truck that just knocked people’s socks off! They had a world class sedan in the Intrepid. There was a new mini-van, and at the time Chrysler ruled that market with over 50 percent share. And Dodge really shook things up with the Viper, an incredible hand built sports car/muscle car that just had to be driven to be appreciated.
Dodge had a great slogan they used among the dealers and employees:
“The rules have changed! This changes everything!”
This was a real rallying point. Nothing like being in a room with hundreds of dealers and having the Dodge folks yelling “the rules have…” followed by the dealers screaming “changed!”, followed by “this changes…” “EVERYTHING!” shouted by Dodge folks and the dealers respectively.
Well, I’m here to tell you, with Sarah Palin, the rules have changed!
Look, much like Chrysler’s history, the Republican party was known for solid core principles. This dates back to Abraham Lincoln. And just like Chrysler, the party has had it’s ups and downs. It’s had periods of great highs and low lows.
One of the very best eras for the party was during the Reagan years. In car guy terminology, this was like the muscle car era when Chrysler’s Hemi(c) engine was introduced and was unbeatable on the race track. NASCAR actually ended up banning the thing and NHRA factored it into oblivion.
Ronald Reagan was that dominant as well. To this day he still inspires millions.
And of course, there were those heady days in the mid 1990’s when the Republicans, led by Newt Gingrich and others took back Congress. That was the culmination of the Reagan Revolution.
But sadly, the Grand Old Party is currently in the K-car business. Utilitarian and somewhat solid, but not exciting, and devoid of any real leadership or ideas. Now for sure, there are some exceptions, there always are. But basically, the GOP is at this point.. Not bad, but certainly not great.
Then there is Sarah Palin.
Sarah defies political definitions and traditions. Yes, she is a true conservative, a novelty in itself in the Republican party these days, but this woman is unconventional, to say the least! Just the fact that she is a woman is a big deal. While there are a lot of women in politics, and a lot of Republican women in key roles, none have the shear magnetism and gravitas Sarah Palin has.
Sarah is different from any politician out there. For one thing, she’s not a Beltway hack. Sarah Palin is an outsider. You can’t be more outside the Beltway than Alaska! Palin is someone who speaks her mind, and when she speaks, people listen. And, unlike most, Sarah Palin says what she means, and means what she says. Unheard of in Washington. In fact, Palin is so straightforward, that many either refuse to believe it, or simply can’t comprehend it.
Case in point: When Sarah gave her Independence Speech on July 3, most of the “elites” in politics, and the media claimed they “couldn’t understand her” or as one put it, they needed “Rosetta Stone” to help them decipher!
Funny thing, millions of us regular folk understood exactly what she was saying. Far from “rambling and incoherent” which has become the state run media’s talking point, Palin simply spelled out what she had achieved in her time as Governor, a lengthy list by anyone’s standard. She also explained why she was doing this. Of course, there were several reasons for Sarah’s decision to step down. This is a complicated situation, the fact of which seemed to fly right over the heads of the elitists.
Not to rehash the whole thing, but one huge factor was the fact the democrat operatives were basically stealing millions of dollars from the Alaska tax payers by filing so many bogus ethics complaints, all of which had zero credibility or merit.
Then there was the personal cost. These democrats have cost Palin and her family over a half million dollars in legal fees, defending false accusations. Palin actually had to set up a legal defense fund to help pay her bills. Of course, this is not uncommon. Many big name politicians have has to do this. But to hear the democrats tell it, Sarah is the first politician ever to do this. They’ve actually filed complaints because she is defending herself against all of the complaints! They even managed to get someone from Barack Obama’s law firm, Perkins Coie to play “special investigator” in this deal! And no one seems to see a conflict of interest by having Thomas Daniel “investigating” Sarah Palin!
You can read more about that here, and more on Perkins Coie, here.
Basically the democrats had ground Palin’s government to a halt. Nothing was getting done. That bothers Sarah immensely. Sarah is a doer. And someone who is all about getting things done doesn’t allow themselves to be halted for long!
Now one other thing that helped Sarah make her decision was the fact that to the media, and the democrats, her children absolutely fair game. Everyone knows the details, so I won’t waste your time, but the really low point was the concerted and coordinated effort to attack her youngest, Trig, who has downs syndrome. Even for democrats, this was as low as it gets.
But, the media conveniently overlooked one of the really important reasons for Sarah’s decision to step down and redeploy her efforts. Maybe since common sense is in short supply among the media and the Beltway elites, the idea of a politician stepping down voluntarily for a higher calling seems silly. To that bunch it’s all about acquiring power and never letting go. This is why they all complained that Palin’s speech was “incoherent!”
Of all of the reasons Sarah is stepping down over, the one big reason, in my mind, is her love of country. Her deep patriotism. Her sense of duty.
Sarah knows that Barack Obama is heading us on a road to ruin with his communist ideals. Obama’s plans are destroying the economy and destroying our liberty and freedom. And he is doing it at breakneck speed!
Sarah, a fiscal conservative, who slashed Alaska’s budget by nearly 17 percent for FY 2010, sees that Barack Obama has spent more money and created more debt than all of the previous 43 Presidents combined. Palin instinctively knows that Obama and the democrats are bankrupting the country, and stealing our grandchildren’s future.
Sarah also knows we need energy independence and has actually taken concrete steps toward that effort. Palin knows the nation’s economy runs on energy. Cheap, plentiful energy. This is a foreign concept to the democrats and Obama.
Sarah understands instinctively that schemes like cap and tax, and the government take over of the health care industry, are destructive to the economy, will cause massive job loss, and will destroy freedom and liberty.
Sarah gets national security. In fact, according to A.B. Culvahouse, the high powered D.C. attorney, and former Reagan advisor, who vetted all of John McCain’s prospective vice presidential candidates, Palin’s offer to be the vice presidential candidate came after her solid answers on three national security questions.
Like the rest of us, Sarah looks at Barack Obama and sees Neville Chamberlain, wrapped up in Jimmy Carter, and seasoned with a good dose of naivete. This is a dangerous world, and this is no time to be the appeaser-in-chief, or the apologist-in-chief.
So, what’s a girl to do?
Well, if you are Sarah Palin and know that Obama and his minions must be stopped and stopped now, before he and his gang do irreparable damage to our nation, you can’t sit idly by and watch.
Sarah knows she couldn’t be effective as Governor. Never mind the fact that the democrats in Alaska, the anklebiters, went insane every time she even thought about leaving the state. And logistically, Alaska is too far away from the rest of the country. So it makes sense for Sarah to step down, so she can step up.
The media elites and the establishment Republicans can’t comprehend the fact that one doesn’t have to be in any sort of political office to effect change. They certainly can’t comprehend anyone giving up what they perceive as power. These cats are the ones who have to be dragged kicking and screaming out of somewhere once they have wore out their welcome!
The media elites and the good old boys in the GOP don’t know Sarah Palin!
The story of Palin is that of a true reformer. She has done it since her earliest days as a Wasilla councilwoman, where she battled with a fellow council member over ethics. Nick Carney, the council member that actually encouraged her to run for office in the first place, had a waste management business. Not a shock, most small town council members and mayors do have some sort of business. But Carney was pushing for an ordinance that would have basically given his company a monopoly in and around Wasilla for garbage collection. Even though they were friends, Sarah fought and defeated the measure, and thus, a reformer was born.
The most well known story is how Sarah cleaned up corruption at the AOGCC. The oil and natural gas commission she chaired. This was pure Sarah Palin.
After being term limited as mayor, Palin ran for Lt. Governor. Even though she didn’t win, Palin caught the eye of Governor Frank Murkowski. Murkowski appointed her to the AOGCC. This is a powerful, good paying job. So what happened next had to be a tough decision to make.
There was a serious good old boy network in and around the oil business in Alaska. Many of the state GOP party officials worked at Palin’s agency. Most notably party chair Randy Ruedrich and former attorney general Gregg Renkes. There were major conflicts of interests between AOGCC people and those in the oil, and coal businesses which the commission regulates. Additionally, Ruedrich was known to spend a lot of company time doing party business.
When Palin tried to fix these issues, tried to clean house, she met incredible resistence. Her boss, the Governor wanted to protect his boys! In what had to be a painful decision, Sarah Palin decided to resign. She “quit.” But, she didn’t really quit!
Now just like today, all of the so-called experts said she was “committing political suicide” was destroying her chances of ever being in politics again. It seem they was slightly incorrect!
You see, far from quitting, Sarah Palin had only begun to fight! In the end, resignations were tendered, fines were paid, and some ended up in prison. As a private citizen, Sarah Palin basically took down the whole Republican establishment. No wonder the establishment types hate her!
Sarah wasn’t done quite yet though. Her next move was to run for Governor of Alaska. She beat Murkowski in the Republican primary in a landslide and then took on popular former democrat Governor Tony Knowles and beat him convincingly.
This is the history of Sarah Palin that the state run media, and Beltway elites either ignore or simply don’t understand. For someone like Sarah, an out-of-the-box thinker, and an incredibly unconventional politician, it makes perfect sense to “give up power” and step down as Governor. Just like she saw an unwinnable situation over at the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, she saw an unwinnable situation if she stayed on as Governor.
Anyone paying attention knows that Sarah Palin is not going to fade into the woodwork. Palin has already said that she is ready to come to the lower 48 and support pro-American conservative candidates. She wants to promote candidates that share her philosophy of small government, fiscal responsibility, strong national security, and energy independence.
Sarah already has speaking engagements lined up and more invites than one can imagine. If you are one of the nearly 120,000 people who follow her on twitter, you know Sarah is chomping at the bit wanting to get busy. She’s been dropping a lot of hints, and going after Obama. She will have a new account after she leaves office, and has promised it will be less “politically correct!” More of a Sarahcuda unleashed!
I did get a kick out of this tweet from Friday night:
Detroit Down” & “Rollin”: “Aint gonna shut my mouth/I know there’s got to be a few hundred million more like me/just trying to keep it free”
That pairs up quite nicely with her comment made in June in Anchorage at an event honoring Michael Reagan. Sarah was talking about how bad of a shape the nation is, and how Barack Obama’s policies were doing grave damage. She spoke of how all of her critics wanted her to just sit down and shut up. She said this:
“Politically, if I die, I die, but I won’t sit down, and I won’t shut up!” She then added: “Stand up, speak up, and be bold! Screw political correctness!”
Words to live by.
And that in a nutshell is what Sarah Palin is all about. This is someone who doesn’t care if she has hurt her chances of ever holding public office again, she has bigger fish to fry!
Sarah has a deep love for this nation. She has a love that will not allow her to just go with the flow. As she said in her Independence Day speech: “Dead fish go with the flow!”
Sarah Palin has guts, something sorely lacking nowadays. She is fearless. Sarah sees the dire situation we are in and has decided that since no one else is answering the call with full force and determination, that she will do it herself. With Sarah Palin, the rules have changed.
No one knows where this journey will take her. But we all know it will be exciting and productive. Frankly, if all Sarah accomplishes is getting a great number of conservatives elected and helps take back Congress so we can stop Obama and start reversing all of the damage he has done, she will forever be remembered as a patriot.
But Sarah Palin is a unique figure in American politics. She draws huge crowds wherever she goes. And once she has these crowds she doesn’t fill their ears with empty rhetoric like that hopey-changey guy we know. Sarah talks substance and policy. That will prove problematic for the unicorn and rainbow salesman-in-chief!
Look for Sarah to energize the nation. To lead a real movement in this country. She has the Republican base. In fact, latest polls show she has a 76 percent approval rating among all Republicans. And her numbers among independents, and even moderate democrats are growing.
Much like Ronald Reagan, Sarah has the ability to build a strong coalition of common sense Americans who have had their fill of business as usual in Washington. A coalition, that if she chooses, can propel her into the White House in 2012.
By seizing the moment and breaking all of the rules, Sarah Palin will be able to turn the Republican brand around. She can bring it back to it’s solid conservative roots. Sarah can transform the GOP from the K-car of politics to the most dynamic and exciting brand going!

Great post ... it will be fun to watch
Scott Mustian Monday, July 27th at 7:58AM EDT (link)It is too early to tell how Sarah will progress … as she claims she does not have a master plan yet. However for political theater this could be the best story to watch in a generation. The key indicator will be seeing if her approval numbers start to shift as she speaks the truth to both political parties … the panic and wailing of the inside the beltway types will be delicious.

Great article

Jeff, perfect example of the difference between...
penguin2 Tuesday, July 28th at 7:27AM EDT (link)how our side handles differences of opinion from what the leftist Dems do. The left does not allow for any expression of dissent or straying from their hard core message. They use intimidation tactics-free speech suppression, ACORN, Black Panthers at the polls, etc. as well as their accomplices in the MSM. They even used it to go after Hillary in order to get Obama in.
Our side is accepting of differences and recognition of views at variance from our own, but nevertheless valid. I guess one could say we can at least be respectful towards differences of opinion.

Jeff, Thank You!
Gary Monday, July 27th at 2:16PM EDT (link)Jeff, thank you for posting this with the big boys. I know we have a different point of view.
It’s just hard not to be enthusiastic about Sarah Palin. I liked her before she became the VP nominee. Liked what she was about. Since then she hasn’t disappointed me a bit!
Who knows where she will end up, but whatever it will be, it will be big! If she accomplishes what she has stated she wants to do, my guess is the cry for her to run in 2012 will be too loud to ignore!

M880?
1stRichard Monday, July 27th at 8:23AM EDT (link)Back in the 70’s Chrysler was bailed out, one of the deals was the military to buy these pickup trucks the M880. Among other problems there was 118 spot welds per side holding the sides of the bed on. The seating arrangement for the bed of the truck was that the seats were attached to the sides. The 118 spot welds were defective dumping the troops on the ground killing some.
Chrysler’s Hemi had a bad reputation for keeping its bottom end in check typically putting a rod where it did not belong. How this relates to some people, well use your own imagination. The K Car had the problem of keeping its front end members attached over every bump in the road. During pothole season up here I welded plenty back together so I do have first hand experience in this.
Well I could go on with a lot more but I think I can jump to the fact you may have opened a “can of worms” in your comparison.
Please don’t jump over to Ford’s “better ideas” as I have some comments on that along with plenty of busted knuckles.
Dodge trucks...
Gary Monday, July 27th at 2:26PM EDT (link)Man, those old trucks were a mess. Couldn’t give ‘em away retail.
I actually owned a K-car. Solid, reliable, but completely uninspiring.
The Hemi(c) reference was because those things were unbeatable, still are. And yeah, they’d sling parts at times. Mostly because the people who bought them beat on them really hard at the race track. (or street racing)
Remember, all of the Funny Car and Top Fuel engines, the 8,000 horsepower, 4 second 330 mph powerplants, are all basically a Hemi(c) engine that has a stronger bottom end.
But it was the total domination angle I was going for!

You could not find a big enough tent to fit all the cars and truck that had a small block. You can tell an original 1955 small block because it had no oil filter and that was a clear message of how clean it was. From grocery getter to street fighter the small block served every segment of the public. The volume changed to meet the need but it was always kept small.
Ok, call me conservative, I believe in the founding fathers, fit the needs of everyone, keep the message clear clean and simple and small government.

Sarah is SHARP
Standlow Monday, July 27th at 8:59AM EDT (link)I believe that Sarah Palin watched the media and the Democrats as they hamstrung GWB during his second term. She was not about to become Act II of this sordid spectacle and did the surest possible thing to thwart it. Now she is unbound. Let the Lilliputians go pound sand.
My feelings exactly. GWB simply would not fight back!
RedWhite_and_Truth Monday, July 27th at 10:32AM EDT (link)I got so tired of that pattern repeating itself over the years. Reagan used to respond with a smile and a “There you go again” to his critics, which just infuriated their little rat-brains, and endeared him to us. It pointed them all out to the country as the pea brains they were.
GWB, however, would never say anything about them, lending credence to their tinfoil-hat NPR-”Stale-Air,” “Not-Quite-All-Things-Considered” host notions of a reckless, warmongering, illegitimate prez.
If Sarah just simply fights back (as she did in the campaign; She was VERY effective in counter-punching, and in an immediate way. . . Zero did the same thing, in his TelePrompTer way, too. . .), she will make me happy.
Any other victories, political or otherwise, against the Marxist onslaught, will be icing on the cake for me.

Palin Makes Reasonable Rules
1elder1 Monday, July 27th at 9:09AM EDT (link)If you follow her you can predict her next move.
Research on her is from books about her like FAITH FAMILY COUNTRY by Parr. Keep up with her TWITTERS and pics. View her videos from the FOX NEWS-Van Sustern visits to Alaska and from TEAMSARAH.org.
Her speeches are consistent and give a glimpse of her character and personality.
Do not get an understanding of her ” rules” from ADN an Alaskan newspaper owned and operated by Democrat Socialist Party members. Interviews with family and close friends yield very little and they all look like they are not cool when characterizing her on TV.(IMO)
Energy independence is a foolish goal, and she would be well served to stop beating the drum.

Drink Good Coffee. You can sleep when you’re dead.
That's not my point at all.
Vladimir Monday, July 27th at 11:44AM EDT (link)We’re not following a cagey strategy by burning all the Saudi’s oil. We’ll lose that game when we run out of money before they run out of oil.
It is a physical impossibility that we could be 100% independent of foreign sources. There are hardly any strategic commodities that we’re 100% self-sufficient, and many that we have no domestic source at all.
The problem is that we’re acting completely helpless while choosing not to explore, for example, ANWR, or the 85% of the OCS that we’ve got locked up for no good reason.
We’ll never be self-sufficient, but if we found a couple of million barrels a day of domestic supply we wouldn’t be totally prostrate in front of OPEC.

Never confuse money with actual stuff
Robert A. Hahn Monday, July 27th at 12:04PM EDT (link)We’ll lose that game when we run out of money before they run out of oil.
Please explain to me how that happens. In Step One they send us oil and we send them money. So far we’re ahead, because we have oil and they have magnetic domains on a hard drive that cost us zip to produce.
If they keep the money and never buy anything with it, that was a really good deal for us.
If they spend the money elsewhere, and it never returns to the U.S. as a claim on goods or services, then we got oil for free. Excellent outcome.
If they spend the money here, then we have engaged in “trade,” which is presumably a win for both sides or it would not have taken place.
Under what scenario do we lose?
Drink Good Coffee. You can sleep when you’re dead.
By that logic, we should shut down all industry, agriculture, mining etc.
Vladimir Monday, July 27th at 2:42PM EDT (link)Sit back & print greenbacks & just let the rest of the world send us stuff.

Yes, that’s called “international trade.” They send us stuff, we send them stuff, and there are these things called “dollars” in the middle to allow the transactions to occur asynchronously, and to keep score. Are we supposed to be frightened of this? Are you proposing that earning income via selling exports is a fright scenario? I’m having trouble figuring out what ballistic path you took to arrive at shutting down mining and manufacturing.

We do have the technology and resources to be energy independent today. We don’ t need oil from outside North America. We mainly only use it to make fuel for automobiles. We mainly use other non-oil fuels to generate electricity.
We can fuel automobiles with fuels derived from North American sources including offshore and Canada and Mexico, we can also use coal, oil sand, natural gas, hydro-electric, solar, and nuclear energy to make auto fuels that don’t require foreign oil as an ingredient, to make up the shortfall of North American oil. CNG, LPG, Hydrogen, electric batteries, and compressed air can all be substituted for oil as a fuel for vehicles and power equipment, like lawnmowers; this technology exists and is available and is being used today.

This means that refiners must buy the kind of oil they are set up to refine or shut down and retool to use a different kind. Almost no automobiles can burn any kind of unrefined crude oil. Gasoline powered cars rely on a refinery to provide them with refined gasoline. The refineries for the gasoline that we use are nearly all in North America. So oil is not all the same. Add to that the fact that every barrel of oil has a delivery charge that increases with distance from the consumer. Local resources would always be the cheapest if taxes were not a factor. And practically speaking foreign oil always arrives by ship instead of pipeline. So it is easy to track.

Uma Richie Monday, July 27th at 4:59PM EDT (link)If crude oil goes from a Middle Eastern oil field to a VLCC to the SUMED pipeline to another VLCC to a US refinery, how does the refinery know what field the oil came from? Do they flush out the SUMED pipeline between shipments?

Crude
Britcom Tuesday, July 28th at 6:00AM EDT (link)I would consider Egypt to be part of the middle east, even though it is technically mostly in Africa.
But, aside from that, a refinery can tell by the chemistry of the oil it gets where it came from (assuming that it’s from an existing field with known chemistry) A refinery also needs and expects to have the crude it buys match its refining system design. Some refineries can’t handle crude that is too “heavy” others specialize in “sour” crude that contains more sulfur.
There are about 161 different types of crude that are traded around the world; the four primary “international” benchmarks, are Brent Crude (North Sea), West Texas Intermediate, Dubai, and the OPEC Basket. Each benchmark is different in chemistry and density and OPEC Basket is a specific blend of several OPEC nation oils. Many refiners can only handle one benchmark at a time and some can only handle one benchmark period. This is mainly because some oils are easier to refine into certain products, for instance light sweet Brent crude is easier and cheaper to turn into gasoline than Heavier oils from say Canada’s oil sands.
Pipelines don’t usually need to be “flushed” to transport different kinds of product or even different grades of the same product. The product (say light crude oil) can be sent down the pipeline in “batches”. These batches often don’t have to be separated because the operators keep track of the intermix zone between batches, and drain it off at the other end and send it back to the refinery. If two products need to be kept separate, then a “pig” is sent down the line between batches (not a real pig) which prevents mixture of the products.
However, my point was really that oil that we get from a domestic pipeline in North America has a known source and known chemical and physical properties, so it would be hard to sneak in some Middle Eastern oil without the refiner knowing and likely not being happy about not getting the oil they were expecting. If we want to make sure we use only North American oil for gasoline, it’s really not that hard to do.

I think Britcom's point was
aesthete Tuesday, July 28th at 2:37PM EDT (link)that if the US wanted to only use “American” gas, we could do so relatively easily by restricting or outlawing the use of certain benchmarks used by refineries in the US, and restricting the import of other types of
At least, I hope that’s what he’s saying. Otherwise, I’d suggest that he look at the new pipeline from Turkey to Europe (which would presumably provide cheaper access of ME oil to Europe), as well as the increasing demands of China and India’s growing economies for oil. That oil’s gonna go someplace, and it might as well go here, IMO (notwithstanding issues of national defense).

Yes, you are right in the first.
Britcom Tuesday, July 28th at 3:16PM EDT (link)As you say restricting the use of certain benchmarks for refineries. It should be a little more scientific than that, but you get the idea.
It should also be noted that new technology doesn’t live in a vacuum. If the US implements a cheap, locally available fuel delivery system for automobiles that doesn’t use oil as an ingredient (e.g. compressed air generated by nuclear, coal, natural gas power, etc.), Europe and Japan and China will follow suit and abandon gasoline as a fuel. This would destroy the value of distance shipped oil and gasoline/Diesel fueled automobiles would go the way of the horse and buggy. As a result the Middle East would have it’s export business model collapse and would have to severely restrict it’s terrorist funding models.

Couple of points
aesthete Tuesday, July 28th at 3:48PM EDT (link)1) The Middle East is barely surviving in its current state in large part *because* of oil. The status quo isn’t awesome, but the only alternative to it in most countries is having actual terrorists take the reins. Sad to say, there are no real Burkean conservative movements or any group that wants peace that has any sort of power in the major OPEC exporters. Almost all of the opposition movements in those countries are terrorist groups (Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, anyone?), or are directly linked to them.
In other words, right now, the status quo governments have oil revenues, the military (mostly), and federal government. Terrorists have guns, fanatics, and many local governments. “Moderates” and those who would actually take part in constructive efforts to make the ME free and prosperous have coffee houses and universities, at most. If oil is removed from the equation, the (really) bad guys win. Any plan that entails cutting off OPEC oil revenues should consider that, and could only work, IMO, if we commit to supporting what positive elements there are in the culture both militarily and rhetorically; something I can’t count on Dems to do. Otherwise, I can’t see such a plan doing anything but enabling extremist elements and severely destabilizing that region of the world.
Still, an extra source for oil can never be a bad thing, so I support us tapping into our resources.
Guilt is a rope that wears thin.

A serious situation could arise...
Britcom Tuesday, July 28th at 11:54PM EDT (link)But without money, they would be mainly throwing stones at locals. I think terror groups would rapidly be overcome by their own need to feed themselves which is difficult in one of the most arid regions of the planet. Therefore, they would learn that in order to get food from the west, they would have to be on good terms with the west. This is the current situation with North Korea, but the difference there is that North Korea has an enormous army, and nuclear weapons. Hopefully we will stop the Middle East from going down the nuclear road.

Look at the Palestinian Territories
aesthete Wednesday, July 29th at 2:52AM EDT (link)Impoverished, devoid of any sort of food supplies, but still capable and willing to blow themselves up if it means taking a few Israelis with them. It seems to me that something similar is very possible if the current regimes are weakened because of an inability to cash in on their oil. If the opposition was better than them, I wouldn’t care, but it’s not, so I’d rather work on moderating the current regimes and helping nascent freedom movements out than destabilizing their countries by having a trade embargo that doesn’t help either of the parties involved.

The Palestinian Arabs already have freedom and look what they have done with it.
Britcom Wednesday, July 29th at 8:47PM EDT (link)They democratically elected a terrorist organization bent on the destruction of Israel (Hamas) to run their government.
So promoting “freedom” doesn’t have the desired effect, On the contrary, they take the opportunity to radicalize even further.
By supporting moderation, we in effect are saying that we will support Arab leaders who keep their population in check. They do this however, with violence, terror, and torture, thereby insuring that their victims blame us even more for supporting the people who are torturing and killing them. This causes greater and greater opposition to the “moderate” Arab government we are seeking to support and greater and greater anger against us.
So supporting “moderation” doesn’t have the desired effect either. It just puts a lid on the problem until it eventually blows up. Then we end up with a full fledged terrorist state.

But, once the cancer has been removed, then you can let the patient have his freedom, but you must maintain constant vigilance against a relapse.

Nicely written piece
LibRick Monday, July 27th at 10:30AM EDT (link)But comparing Chrysler to the GOP, does the GOP a great injustice.
Chrysler was bailed out in the 80’s and bankrupt this year. Sure they made great hi-performance hardware, but their cars (not their trucks–great vehicles ) were unreliable. I don’t think the GOP fits here.
My car metaphor for the GOP would be Honda — Reliable, staying on message, not flashy, and a long term bargain.
That aside, you write really well!

I might if...
LibRick Monday, July 27th at 11:43AM EDT (link)the GOP would just fully embrace and act out their inner “Honda.” But recently, they have not acted fiscally conservative nor have they limited government. Those old GOP tenets are the “long term bargain.” The GOP strayed from them and seem to be engaged in an all things for everyone “Sale-O-Thon.”
It’s like Honda deciding to trade it’s earned reliability reputation to get a quick fix on what is trendy and will increase sales in the short term. Not a good idea for Honda nor the GOP.
But, you and others here seem to get out a good message that, I will admit, have inched me closer to your side. Don’t know if I’m ready yet for the NRCC and NRSC sales brochure.

I had never had any crab gear because it is expensive and ugly; I’d just partner my permit with somebody who had gear and I’d be the deckhand. So, three years ago, I ran out of friends who’d let me do that and bought my own crab gear, better part of $3K, and set our legal four pots. Got zero crab in the three days that the season was open before they closed it because of the low yields and haven’t opened a winter or a summer personal use King Crab season since. And I like Palin… to a point.
In that vain, I’d like to make three points:
I’m not so convinced that SHE has any type of plan let alone a ‘grand plan’ than many of you see in/for her. I’d love to know that someone has sat down and mapped the next 3 years out for her and all that goes with it. I have little faith that she has done this herself, and we have seen no evidence that she has brought in any so called ‘wise men’. You might deride people such as Rove and Axlerod, but they have a part to play.
Lacking any evidence, I don’t think that Palin’s plan extends beyond getting her family ’stuff’ together… doing a little speaking and maybe getting a book deal. Nothing more. Maybe that is enough… or enough for now. But it is not unseating Obama which some here would have her be doing.
My second point is to repeat an old military axiom; ‘Amateurs talk of strategy and professional speak of logistics.’ The logistics of a Presidential race are never easy, and her’s… being that her political base is ‘off shore’ and that she is a woman is going to be that much more difficult. No busing in supporters to Iowa and the like.
Then there is the media… which means a ‘two front war’ Same as for every other Republican you say. Sure… but that much more for her. And the question is is she and her team… such as it might be, ready fro this? I don’t know.
Lastly… if things go as I think they might, this election in 2012 will be a repeat of 1980… the voters can’t wait to get the train wreak that Obama had become the heck out of Dodge. Everybody and his 3rd cousin is going to want to run. One heck of a fight on just the GOP size.

Alaska used to be a very cheap state,
Achance Monday, July 27th at 3:49PM EDT (link)as in pre-oil they refused to spend any more on government than they absolutely had to. As the result or about the time of Gov. Hickel’s becoming Sec. of the Interior during his gubernatorial term, the law was changed by Constitutional amendment to eliminate the Secretary of State, an elected position, I think, and substutute a Lt. Gov. who would be the running mate of the Gov. I’m pretty sure the thinking was, that if the Lt. Gov. moved up, there really wouldn’t be a need for a Lt. Gov. The job has next to no official duties and really only exists to have a successor who was elected from the same party as the Governor. The Constitution just says that the Lt. Gov. will designate a commissioner to do some of the Lt. Gov’s duties if the Gov moves up.

Good Points, But I Just Don't Look To Sarah As Our Next Leader
DavidSage Monday, July 27th at 3:11PM EDT (link)I was a fan of Palin’s, and still admire her, but I just don’t see her bringing the GOP to the promised land. I also don’t think she’s as popular as her supporters insist she is. During the 2008 campaign, I found myself in the position of always defending her, even to my friends who were lifelong Republicans. I know she has her admirers, but I’m not sure she should be the best face of the GOP.
Palin has an excellent record in Alaska, and is unquestionably a solid conservative. But what I most admired about her was her tenacity, and she destroyed that quality by stepping down in the middle of her term as Governor. I’m sorry, but if you can’t handle the pressure of being Governor of Alaska, you can’t handle the pressure of running for President. That’s not the mark of a strong leader.
What the media and liberals did to her and her family was despicable, but I don’t think that’s reason enough to make her our leader. Republicans are always going to get rougher treatment by the media, but somehow other conservative leaders are able to carry on.
Liberals are licking their chops at the idea of Palin running for President, similar to how Republicans really wanted to run against Hillary in 2008. I’d rather have a contest of ideas than personalities.
At the end of the day, I just don’t want the drama, and I think there are better candidates out there that also have a conservative message that will resonate with Americans.
"Can't handle the pressure"?
SabreMau Tuesday, July 28th at 3:55AM EDT (link)Someone who can’t handle pressure wouldn’t be taking the parting shots she has and promising to put herself in a position for even more attacks from detractors.
What more closely fits the evidence is exactly what she said happened; she’s relieving pressure on Alaska, not on herself. The ethics statutes involved are particular to the state, not to national politics in general.
If she, as the meme goes, can’t handle pressure, I would be curious to see how that charge would hold up when she goes out continuing to make herself a target simply by speaking up.
SabreMau- I agree
Scope Tuesday, July 28th at 6:31AM EDT (link)I can’t see Palin, walking on egg shells so to speak, with her words and speeches. She was smacked down by McCain for using the word Socialism in one of her VP speeches. She no longer has McCain or his cronies to tell her what to say, or what not to say. In her parting speech to the Alaskans, she wasn’t on a leash, and she let it fly. I am so glad she has moved away from the VP choice/Governor of Alaska role, where she was required to act, and to speak with a controlled decorum. I may be very wrong, but, I think we will all see a very different Palin now. It’s about dam# time someone has the guts to speak up and speak out against the Marxists. Palin knows, without doubt, that she will now have even a bigger target on her head, and the attacks will continue, and even ramp up. To think Palin couldn’t take the pressure is foolish.
See the link I put in my note atop the post for my take on this
Jeff Emanuel Tuesday, July 28th at 6:53AM EDT (link)I think “can’t handle the pressure” is the Alpha and the Omega of the message she’s sent here. That being said, her family has been subjected to attacks that should have some of these tolerant liberals strung up in the yard (and others, like the Brit import writing at The Atlantic who is obsessed with her reproductive organs, sent back across the pond from whence he came).

My 2 cents-
redneck_hippie Monday, July 27th at 8:10PM EDT (link)The libs react to all things Palin with rabid attacks, and anyone who can inspire universal lefty hate is doing something right.
The libs slobbered over Huck and JMac. And that graphic is AWESOME!!!

The left fears plain spoken honesty
southcoast Tuesday, July 28th at 9:45AM EDT (link)Through and subsequent to the election there has been a steady drumbeat of criticism aimed at a woman and her family by the overt carriers for Barak 0bama and those acting to curry favor later on. True enough Barak 0bama and Sarah Palin have much different speech deliveries, however, shut off the
teleprompter and 0’s oratory becomes more that of a stammering fool. It is difficult to believe in listening to Barak 0bama he is Harvard educated.
In the final analysis I have more respect for Sarah Palin’s plain spoken honesty rather than 0bama’s articulate deceit and dishonesty.
