Should Rick Perry resign as governor of Texas to run for president?

Watching Perry’s speech at the RedState gathering, I noticed that one of his biggest lines, the one that he seemed to really throw himself into, with a big grin, was “..when I decide to really do something, I go all in..”

OK Governor, if we take you at your word, then why not resign as governor to run full time for the WH?

I’m not saying to quit immediately; but maybe in a few months, or possibly another way..announce after Labor Day that you’ll be stepping down at the end of the year, to focus full time on your WH campaign.

Remember, in your last election, you were initially far behind Kay Bailey Hutchinson. One of the first things that turned voters against her was when she broke her promise to resign from her Senate seat to run against you. She didn’t, and it hurt her..badly..

There are two really good reasons why you should consider stepping down:

You remove yourself from proximity to anything that might occur in Texas over the next 16 months. You have  very positive record of accomplishments…don’t risk anything tarnishing it.

Also, it gives your Lt. Governor something to do.  Instead of running for the Senate, he’ll be thrilled to move into the governor’s office earlier than he hoped for.  And that would probably guarantee that Ted Cruz will be the nominee, and the next US senator freom Texas.

In that case should Bachmann and Paul resign their house seats in order to run? I’ve read that Bachmann has missed about 40% of the votes in the house since her campaign got going. I also understand the House Tea Party caucus was missing in action during the debt ceiling debate, because Bachmann is the head of it, and wasn’t around. Should she resign her house seat? I wasn’t aware that you had to be unemployed in order to run for the presidency.

The Texas legislative session ended a few weeks ago, and won’t reconvene for two years. That means everything is in place while Perry will be campaigning. What would happen if he were ill, or incapacitated for any length of time? I’m sure there are plenty of people to watch the store, so to speak, and, Texas is a quick plane ride away in an emergency. He was honest and wise enough to wait for the legislative session to end before even making any noises about running.

Perry will have plenty of time to pass the baton before his Presidential inauguration in Jan. 2013.

The Texas Legislature meets in regular session on the second Tuesday in January of each odd-numbered year. The Texas Constitution limits the regular session to 140 calendar days.

      Jan. 8th 2013 – 83 Texas Legislature convenes.

I was ready to give you the litany of Dems who haven’t resigned to run, but you trumped the list.

      Well done, Lone Star Son.

(not talking about you here gawken) There are many libs who are saying Texas has a weak governor role, so Perry really hasn’t accomplished anything, the Lt Gov has all the power, etc. I fully expect the same people to start saying Perry needs to resign since he won’t be able to devote full attention to his job while running for President.

It’s kind of like another contradiction/double standard/whatever you want to call it. We’ve heard all the whining today about how people like Warren Buffet are forced into paying less than their fair share of taxes. As many people are saying, just write a check for whatever extra amount you feel you owe, or just fire your accountants and take the standard deduction on your tax return and file a two-pager instead of using all the loopholes we are apparently holding a gun to your head to choose. Lefties are wailing over how this proves the rich aren’t paying their fair share, so we need to blast through a few trillion in tax hikes.

On the other hand, note how the lefties are also wailing about Michele Bachmann voting against stimulus, but then once it passed trying to get a piece in her district. Trying to have it both ways, eh?

Buffet et al are keeping their own money when they could volunteer to give more. In Bachmann’s case, the money is already confiscated and is going to be spent somewhere, so she might as well make sure some it goes to something that isn’t just a vote-buying scheme/union giveaway in some liberal district.

Heck, while I’m thinking about it, perhaps there should be legislation from applying the Bush tax cut extension to people who voted against it. Surely a millionaire like Pelosi would be happy, right? How many times have we heard her asked about this?

Wearing blue or red stars depending on who you voted for and the size of the star will correlate with your income level.

Then the little blue stars wearers can target the big red star wearers for re-distribution.

I mean…how can he do an effective job as POTUS if he is distracted by running for POTUS?

    • BigRedConservative

      Than being president.

That’s a false and misleading comparison unless you can actually cite where Perry promised to resign.
