First, it should be pointed out that the GOP needs to stop using the language of the left/liberal side and drop "tax cuts"... Geez, we have had these current tax rates FOR 10 YEARS! Since when is a set of taxes and tax rates in effect for 10 years, and having raised over $10 trillion a 'tax cut'. Just call it CURRENT TAX RATES.

Second, Senator McConnell is CORRECT to harp on "economic certainty". There is a feared 'fiscal cliff' at the end of the year, and that does need to be cleared and it is impacting our economy now.

Third, it is further correct that making tax laws PERMANENT is the real answer. However, Obama will not ever sign a reasonable tax law, and we have an odd situation that the laws expire 20 days prior to Obama's 1st term ending. We have the feard 'fiscal cliff' if we do nothing, and a repeat of the last minute game of chickeen played in late 2010. So the best possible outcome is the following:
1. We get a one year extension of all tax rates and get Obama to sign off on it. If not before the election, in the lame duck period.
2. Romney and the new GOP Congress do permanent tax reform in 2013 and fix it for good.
Of course, if Obama is re-elected - well, our goose is seriously cooked. No telling what can be done then.

Given all this, a good GOP position is:

I think that should be rather clear. I leave my second point up to debate, and of course there are lots of other legitimate reasons for Sen. McConnell to be nudged out of the way, including his terrible Pontius Pilate debt act and his constant betrayal of House Republicans, among many others.

Would DeMint win? If he knows he would, he should certainly run. Indeed, he would have a duty to run. If he knows he wouldn't, he should wait. That would be the most conservative course of action (not in the ideological sense!).

I think we know that the Bush tax cuts cannot be extended permanently with Obama, but they'll expire during the lame duck session, which means they must be extended for one year first. In any case, we are unlikely to get 60 seats, which means that the tax cuts will only be able to last for ten years before being renewed again.

If Senator DeMint does read this, I have a message for you:

If you do run, you must win. If you cannot win, do not run. That is the only way to avoid splitting the Conference and failing to accomplish anything at the same time.
