Shock, Disbelief! Chrysler “highly unlikely” to pay back Federal loan!

Gee no one saw that one coming!  From DetNews:

A federal bankruptcy judge Monday allowed Chrysler LLC to tap $4.5 billion in U.S. and Canadian government loans to finance its stay in bankruptcy, but a top company adviser warned that it’s “highly unlikely” the company will repay them.

But wait there’s more…

U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Arthur Gonzalez rejected a request by dissident creditors to deny Chrysler use of the loan money.

You go judge, who cares if the tax payer gets screwed!

Attorney Ball and Chrysler officials declined to comment on Manzo’s assessment that repayment of the $4.5 billion is “highly unlikely.”

What more is there to say?

In court papers fielded last week, Chrysler said it expects the U.S. Treasury to forgive the $4 billion loan made in January. A senior Obama administration official didn’t dispute that assessment, but declined to comment on whether Treasury would recover any of the $4.5 billion in debtor-in-possession financing.

So it wasn’t a loan after all?  Who’d of thunk the taxpayer would be left holding the bag.

Well at least the UAW will be well funded.

United Auto Workers Union President Ron Gettelfinger said the union intends to sell the equity stake it gained in Chrysler as soon as possible — but said that may take years. A union trust to pay for retiree health care, known as a Voluntary Employees’ Beneficiary Association, or VEBA, got 55 percent of Chrysler as part of a concession plan ratified by workers last week.

Only 55% of a company you yourself drove into the ground, man you guys really took it on the chin in your negoations.

I’m sure the GM bailout loan will go MUCH better.

P.S. Should we be worried about TARP?  Naaah, what could go wrong?

If Treasury forgive their $4 billion loan to Chrysler, that’s taxable income to Chrysler. Or are they going to look the other way while Ford “forgets” to pay taxes on that income.

Or are they going to try to sweep the loan forgiveness under the table in the bankrupcy deal, that is increasing looking like a show trial orchestrated by the White House and their goons.

And if I were Ford I’d be hopping mad that my competitor got a huge gift from the taxes that Ford paid.

“Now that the UAW has an ownership stake in GM and looking good to have an even bigger position in Chrysler, how is this market power going to be addressed. While the obvious question is the role of ownership in two competitors, there is a more significant question. How can the UAW continue to be certified to conduct collective bargaining with Ford? You would have an instance of them being in a position to negatively impact a major competitor. There are all sorts of anti-trust concerns raised by this.”

Could this mean that Ford has an opening to divest itself from the union contracts? One could only hope…

They’d have problems after the Ford plants got firebombed and any non-union workers got beat to a pulp.

shares of Chrysler, they plan to sell them and use the money to fund their healthcare plans.

Its hard to bash management when management works for you.

This makes the UAW-favored Obama treatment in all of this that much more of a bald wealth transfer

Right now, absent continuing government transfusions, Chrysler has a negative net value, which means that the UAW’s new shares (and everyone else’s) are eessentialy worth zero.

So how are these shares going to gain enough market value to make them worth selling? More likely is that the pension and health care obligations will be pawned off to a shell third party, woefully undercapitalized, and the taxpayer will pick up the tab. This on top of how they’ve already stiffed current creditors.

Plus other government coercion and slight of hand.

End result, the government will directly and indirectly shovel enough money to Chrysler and offload debt long enough to create a bubble value. Once the government and the union have sold off their shares, the company will collapse as the union plunders the company a second time with new contract demands.

And if you think the money is going to fund healthcare, I’ve got a bridge to sell you. The money is going to go to the Democratic Party and to union organizing effort to force everyone into unions.

Which just makes all of this even more horrifying. There are so many unintended consequences attached to this action that it is mind-boggling. The last thing I’d want to be at this point is an investor of any kind, particularly a hedge fund manager. Talk about stress in the workplace!

  • JustLeaveMeAlone

Actually, if there were true justice, the UAW would be left holding the bag for Chrysler’s debt.

But no — the other workers and pensioners of America get to pay that.

They don’t have time to do that for another 6-12 months.

I guess it’s kind of like how it was impossible for Obama to disclose any details about his fund-raising during the campaign.

check the “Jeb Bush is Right” thread.

Sorry, Neil…I’m letting it go now.

Sorry, Aaron….I know I said last year that I slink out of red-on-red barfights, so I’m out the kitchen door.

Warrior, please…we’re all on the same team.

I wasn’t even trying to fight with Warrior….I was simply re-wording Marcus’s statement for those who had trouble understanding it.

It’s all good….I have been informed by Warrior that my posts are basically irrelevant because he is older than me….funny thing is my politics are based on a few documents that are way older than Warrior.

The link for GM is here:

    But it’s still an iffy.

If the story is true, Chrysler and GM will be proofs that billions of taxpayers’ money are being/were squandered by Obama’s TARP II in just 2 months. Obama is not Socialism 101. It’s Thugocracy/Corruption 1,000,000,000,001.

Ron Paul and 126 more congressmen are now asking for the audit of the Fed.
