BP vs USA

So now Bloomberg tells us that the Coast Guard has given BP only 48 hours to increase their containment capacity:

US gives BP 48 Hours to Boost Containment Capacity

What a crazy world.  The BP situation is such a profound demonstration of the dangers of putting ideology first.  The left thinks that oil companies are bad, oil is bad- and so they are willing to destroy our environment to prove it!

Check this comparison:

* The GDP of the USA is $14.6 trillion.  “GDP” (revenue) of BP is $266 billion.  By that measure, the US is more than 50 times bigger.  But of course, that doesn’t present the real relative capacity of the US to respond, vs BP.  For instance:

* BP’s operating cash flow (the amount of money it had left last year after paying most of its expenses- though not, for instance, debt service or any investment in finding more oil)- was $28 billion.  The federal budget last year was $3.5 trillion.  More than 100 times larger.

* BP, unlike the US, famously lacks (apparently) nearly unlimited borrowing power.

* Then there are the two huge legal issues.  First, BP under US law has limits on its liability for this disaster.  Second, BP’s management is under criminal investigation.  How much would you cooperate if your every statement could be used against you?

Now, I don’t mean to defend BP or all of the steps that it has or has not taken to clean up this mess.

But when a disaster like this happens, what our government should do is to step in and clean things up.  They shouldn’t tell BP to bring in skimmers- the feds should do this.  They shouldn’t ask BP to build sand bars- the feds should.  If the feds aren’t satisfied with the communications, then they should fix the communications problem.

Particularly on that latter point, I bet that BP may have a handful of employees with experience building sand bars.  In contrast, the US Corps of Engineers has 34,000.  What are these people doing- sitting on their butts emailing BP to get to work??!!

So the feds are giving BP 48 hours to boost containment capacity?!  Or what?  A cynic would speculate that this mean that BP has already told them they will boost containment capacity in the next 48 hours.  If not, where did the 48 hour number come from?  What happens in 48 hours?  48 hours from when?  BP already plans to triple its gathering capacity within a month.  If they can’t double it in 48 hours, should they just give up?

It’s just mind-boggling.  I have followed politics all my life, but have never seen an administration remotely as ideological as this one.  It’s all about hating oil companies, and, perhaps, punishing Republicans in Gulf States.  Now the Obama administration is willing to destroy our environment in order to punish oil producers.  They care about their ideology, and haven’t a bit of practical sense.

They pushed the global warming scare. Ironically, BP is on the hook for the huge ecological disaster in the gulf. Now Bambi and the greenies want to roast BP.

If you dance with the devil you can wind up with his boot on your neck. Too bad the same boot is kicking the tail of the whole Gulf coast region. It doesn’t have to be that way but Bambi wants it that way.

Don’t ever doubt Obama isn’t keeping score and the red state Gulf scores a zero. If this disaster had occured off the coast of New England, Obama would have moved heaven and earth from day one.

You are right to ask that very simple question, however, there will never be a reasonable answer.

I agree that the feds should have been on this accident from day one, and doing more than just having meetings. They should have accepted the help offered from other countries. Woulda shoulda coulda will not change the disastrous outcomes.

I personally don’t believe that this was punishment to the Republican run coastal states, it’s much bigger than that. It’s a punishment to all the anti-Global Warming people, and the evil oil companies. Crap and Tax was shelved in the Senate, barely breathing. The O and the progressives must get it passed before the November elections. This is a crisis that was too good to waste. O diddled for all those days while planning on exactly how to make this into a major crisis, in order to get his bill passed. The Crap and Tax bill is even more important than the Obamacare bill. Obamacare involved the US citizens. Crap and Tax gets us onto the world stage along with the Global Warming alarmists, and greenies, that have refused to allow the entire fraud to destroy what they believe is the new moneymaker, and power getter.

I would not hold it against them. This Administration and its IDIOT lackeys have abused this company horribly. There is no doubt that BP would have taken care of trying to stop the oil and cleaning up the oil and paying those who have lost dollars because of the oil but the HATEFUL, DISGUSTING, PATHETIC way they have been treated by Obama leaves me to believe that they panicked when they should have been more thoughtful. If they packed everything in and NEVER did business with America again it wouldn’t shock me. I don’t believe they will go out of business on the backs of their stock holders!

has kicked around and abused corporate America, the bondholders & the shareholders, it would not surprise me if BP said that’s it…
sue me….it’s your problem now Obama.

How many more oil producers will pull out of the America market?
Many of those “greedy companies” will say it is not worth it to drill
during a hostile Obama administration. Obama and the green weenies get what they wanted all along. $10 per gallon gas so everyone will buy a “green” GM tricycle.

The feds have written million of pages of documents….
They have a “contingency plan” for every “contingency”.
So why does the Obama administration act as if they
don’t know what they are doing? They now realize that
this disaster will cost them something….Obama cannot make
a speech and make it go away.

Maybe he should start sucking it up with a straw.
