It has never been more obvious. Sanford is gone (I don’t think he had a chance anyway from what I’ve heard from some South Carolinians). Ensign is gone. Huckabee is now a pundit. Jon Huntsman is now the Ambassador to China. Bobby Jindal seems to have no interest in a 2012 presidential run. And now, I agree with Erick: Sarah Palin will not be President in 2012. Tim Pawlenty is the only person I know of that could come close to challenging Romney in the primaries.
Romney is easily the best-positioned, the most well-funded, the most articulate choice we have left for 2012. Those who ridiculed Romney in 2008 must take a second look at him now. Those who refuse will do so at their own peril. No Fred Thompson, no Rudy Giuliani, no Ron Paul or any other dark horse or candidate we beg to come out of the woodwork and save us.
Now let me be clear, I like Sarah Palin. I always have. I think she’s a star of our party. She’s incredibly intelligent, very tenacious and an excellent governor. I do believe this was an unfortunate move for her. But if it was not clear before, it definitely is now: Mitt Romney must be our nominee in 2012.

That depends...
ModerateIN Saturday, July 4th at 2:48AM EDT (link)If by here you mean RedState, then I am keeping my mouth shut, and staying up to date on the conservative movement. I didn’t decide on who I would vote for until a couple hours before the polls in Indianapolis closed. Given how much of a polar opposite Obama is, it showed how little I knew about my own convictions. Consider me your mushy moderate trying to sort out where he stands.
If by here you mean what am I doing commenting on this thread, well, I was merely surprised that someone would post a “Our only obvious choice is…” diary a mere three hours after Palin’s announcement. There are other reasons, but I would just be repeating what you’ve already been told in this thread.
Basically, just lump me into the pile of “Woah, not just yet” people.

I didn’t worship him, nor think that he would somehow fix everything in six months. Was this narrow-minded of me? Probably, especially if this “opportunity” ends up costing trillions of dollars with nothing to show for it (Yes, I know: “Uh…if?”).
I realize it was a mistake because I could not fully support many of his policies, instead resorting to “Let’s see what he can do”. It is a free country and people have many different reasons for voting, but I’d personally like to try and be a liiiiiittle more informed from now on.

Achance Saturday, July 4th at 1:20PM EDT (link)At this stage of the game, three years out, it is all about who has the money and organization to give you a contract or a job. For most any of the others, an operative or consultant would have to take the risk of giving up other work to help do the ramp up on a campaign. Why do that when you can get paid and then work to make Romney’s inevitability a self-fulfulling proposition. Unfortunately, this business of the consultants driving the party is a real problem for Republicans, Gingrich has complained repeatedly about it, because they all flock to whichever candidate has the most money or best governmental connections so they can get work. The Democrats have that extensive shadow government that can give Democrat operatives plenty of work. For operatives that lean Republican, it is either get with the candidate that can pay you or go get a real job somewhere.

southernilpat Friday, July 3rd at 7:46PM EDT (link)2012 is all up to Obama, really. If he stays strong it doesn’t matter who the Republican is, they will lose. If the economy continues to tank and the Obamorons actually start to realize that The One can’t make it all better, then it will matter more who we put up against him.
Hopefully Romney will only be the nominee if the Republicans need a sacrificial lamb to throw up against a strong Obama. He’s too slick, too insider, too liberal to really excite the base. We are trying to NOT get Romney style governmental interference in health care.

There is 2 whole years before the Iowa Straw poll and 30 months before an actual vote is cast. There is time and time changes everything. Maybe Romney decides not to run because he doesnt see enough base support to merit another 40 million dollor investment.
Jindal/Thompson ‘12
Bringing clear Conservative change to America.
All Romney-haters, please respond to this...
GOP84 Saturday, July 4th at 12:26AM EDT (link)And explain yourselves…
This is the same site that mostly supported Fred Thompson. Where did he go? Oh yeah, the base wasn’t too energized about him either and he didn’t win a SINGLE PRIMARY! Not to mention the fact that Fred’s entrance into the race was the most reluctant of any politician I’ve ever seen. I told you the same thing back then and I was right.
I told everyone that McCain was an awful candidate…and I was right. He was. He was the worst candidate since Dole in ‘96 (in fact, I believe I actually compared him to Dole during the election). So far, all your sacred cows like Thompson, Sanford (yes I know there were Sanford fans out there), Ensign, Huntsman, Palin, McCain and others have all fallen by the wayside in one way or another. By the way, I had very high hopes for Bobby Jindal but that State of the Union response was awful.
You’re trying to tell me how bad Mitt is when he actually got 2nd place in the primaries last year. Just like…. Reagan in ‘76! Most of you jumped on the McCain bandwagon when he became the frontrunner and ditched him when he lost. He was the most left-leaning candidate we had and most of you supported him. So don’t act like you know how to better energize the base.
Romney was more conservative than McCain (even most of you would agree with that) and he actually won a lot of states. He ended up with more delegates than Huckabee, even after the race was over. How can you not see that this is at least similar to Reagan in ‘76?
You can whine about his “flip-flops” or “RomneyCare,” make lame jokes about how he lost to McCain, or dismiss my post because it’s “unrealistic,” but none of you have made a legitimate case for anyone else or reasonably challenged what I said in my post. Keep in mind, the guys that you supported all lost too (including Palin and McCain) last year. So without dismissing me as a “shill,” can you honestly debate me or cowardly dismiss Romney without any real facts or logic?
In case your calendar is broken?...
discerningconservative Saturday, July 4th at 12:53AM EDT (link)It is only 2009. We have the 2010 mid-term elections to worry about before we even consider the 2012 presidential election. Do you want to gain the majority in the House? If so, what good is touting Romney doing? Is he running for the House? Senate? Let it be… we’ll cross that bridge in about 2 years. Until then, focus on what is important now. As far as you looking for honest debate on your diary, how about this… I will guarantee that Romney will not be the ONLY choice in 2012. There will definitely be more than one candidate on the Republican ticket in ALL 50 states (oh… we will be running against Obama, so I guess it would be all 57 states.) We don’t need a candidate for 2012 yet. We need to focus on stopping this administration from cramming horrid legislation down our throats, and regaining seats in both chambers of congress in the next election. We will be glad to address your Romney fantasy in about 2 years.
That's fair.
GOP84 Saturday, July 4th at 12:58AM EDT (link)But I haven’t been the only one speculating about candidates in 2012. And of course I’m sure someone will run against Mitt in 2012. There’s always a Tancredo, Brownback or a Ron Paul out there that will challenge whoever the frontrunner is. Thanks for being fair and reasonable.
I think that whomever gets the GOP nod in 2012
discerningconservative Saturday, July 4th at 1:04AM EDT (link)will be someone that is completely unknown at this time. Did the lib’s hang their hopes on Barry in 2005? It is unusual for a candidate to be determined , by speculation, this early. We all need to step back, and focus on what really matters NOW. There are a lot of things that us conservatives need to be fighting against, and the least important would be who we should support for President in 2012. Relax, enjoy the holiday weekend. Remington_Steele Saturday, July 4th at 1:57AM EDT (link)84,
I’m with you on your analysis, but it’s just too soon as discerningconservative says. If Palin is out of elected politics (which I’m unsure of), Romney is the next biggest guy left standing. Yet, that can change very quickly, and we have way too many days left. At this point, talking a lot about it just puts a big bulls-eye on Romney’s back. I for one, don’t need Dan giving us a new 10 piece series on Romney

You will be in for a surprise. Look at Sarah as a shooting star. She is more popular that the party’s presidential candidate.
One thing that this party needs to do is get away from the talking heads and pundents who try to tell us what we need and where we are going.
There is nothing that burns me more than hearing someone like Chris Matthews tell me what the Republicans need to do.
There is a grassroots momemtum building and it is not for Mitt or others who are trying to court the illegal immigrant vote. Throw them all out in 2010. Starting with Harry Reid.

GOP84 Saturday, July 4th at 12:50AM EDT (link)Read up on Reagan in 1976. He lost to Gerald Ford in the primaries in ‘76 and then won against Bush Sr. in 1980. Same thing goes for Bush Sr himself running against Reagan. I believe Nixon did it too. Look at even McCain. He lost to Bush in 2000 and became the nominee in ‘08. Getting 2nd in the previous election doesn’t mean anything. If anything, it’s a badge of honor in the GOP.
By the way, Mitt was actually against the amnesty bill, unlike McCain. So he doesn’t really court the illegal immigrant vote.
Sheesh.
mbecker908 Saturday, July 4th at 1:38AM EDT (link)Mitt is no Reagan. He’s not fit to stand in Reagan’s shadow. Actually, Mitt is a lot more like McCain. And both of them are putzes.
Reagan was a winner.

Reagan Candidate?
discerningconservative Saturday, July 4th at 1:55AM EDT (link)I had no idea that people were running for Reagan. Look, I don’t have many problems with Romney. I lived in Concord NH for his entire Governorship, so I was pretty familiar with what he did. I think he well outshone his Governorship with his accomplishments with the Salt Lake winter olympics. He is a very astute businessman, and when it comes to the economy he would be very strong. I still believe very strongly that it is WAY too early to be discussing this. Remember that we have the 2010 midterm primaries starting within a year from now??? Let’s focus on what is truly important and not who can guess the next GOP presidential candidate.

I don’t have a candidate yet. We have no idea what the issues for ‘12 will be. We have no idea who will be running. We have no idea what the Congress will look like post ‘10. We don’t know if Obama’s attempt - and probably success - at rigging the census will have some effect on who our candidate should be. And on and on.
I’ll tell you who I WON’T support in any primary: Huckabee, RonPaul, Romney, anybody with any link to McCain and probably Palin now that she’s quit. And I have no intention of getting baited into a discussion of why because none of that matters either. Google RS in the ‘08 primary season and read my comments there.

Reagan was wealthy, experienced, and powerful before
Achance Saturday, July 4th at 12:16PM EDT (link)he came into state and national politics. His political beliefs were formed in the crucible of experience rather than products of focus group determined points of convenience. Romney too was wealthy, experienced, and powerful. but his political beliefs are all over the dial and seem more to be the product of polling and focus groups rather than any personally held belief. Many of the others achieved wealth and power only through their involvement in politics. Consequently, they are very insecure of and jealous of their power in the political system. The only one who has ever impressed me as being both genuine and comfortable in his/her skin is Fred Thompson, but his age gives me pause when I look at the BHO electorate comprised largely of minorities and semi-literate children.
We wrongly refer to the self-styled elite as the “Country Club Republicans.” For most of them, if they are a member of the Country Club set, they are very recent members. Those that are rich are newly rich. I think we’d be better off with the Country Club set making decisions in smoky rooms than we have been recently with a bunch of nouveau riche graspers fighting over whose hooves are furtherest into the trough.

Nothing wrong with being an engineer. Our military does not practice democracy, it defends it. Those brave men today are defending our right to do what we want and can with our lives, that is what America is all about. Inevitability is a silly claim when Romeny polls 25% among Republicans
red_oakster Monday, July 20th at 12:08PM EDT (link)We’re 30 months from Iowa. A lot can happen. I think it’s fair to say Romney is the frontrunner, but Palin, Pawlenty, Pence, Giuliani, and others all have scenarios in which they could beat Romney.
Everybody has to go through Iowa and New Hampshire, and Romney’s status as front runner loads him up with greater expectations. Ever considered the possibility that Romney might finish third in Iowa behind Huckabee and say Pawlenty? Do you think that would help him in New Hampshire. Suppose Giuliani becomes Governor, and further suppose that all of New Hampshire’s independent voters vote in the GOP primary in 2012 (Obama runs uncontested). Think a Giuliani or a Pawlenty couldn’t surprise Romney in New Hampshire?
Now multiply these scenarios by a thousand. The only certain thing at this point is uncertainty.

2010 is approaching
morstar150 Sunday, July 5th at 1:00AM EDT (link)forget 2012. We need to start developing viable and successful candidates for the congressional elections.
We also need to start by redefining who we are as Republicans and what we have to offer to American. I would offer these three issues that we need to address in order to win over the American voters.
First, smaller government, less taxes. This is clearly the most important issue that faces the US under the democrats. It defines who we are and draws a contrast between the socialist government and the capitalist society. It is time for Americans to choose.
Solving the immigration issue.is second. That solution is not one where the government simply waves the amnesty wand to make the proble morph into a greater problem. Instead, the govenment needs to recognize that undocumented means illegal. What we have today is a congress that hopes to pacify illegals so that they can get their vote and there cheap labor. Of course, all of that comes at the expense of American who we are told would not do that kind of work. Ask my 18 year old if he would like to take some of the constuction jobs that go to the cheaper paid illegal employee who doesn’t pay taxes. Add to that the drug gangs and people runners and we can thank our elected official and Napolitano for the chaos at the border. Security demands a no amnesty answer.
The third thing that needs to be fixed with our country and party os that we have to get away from this one world philosophy. That means bringing back our manufaturing base to our country. I don’t want to hear that it can’t be done. It can and it will get done with th eright leadership. One reason why Regan was elected in landslides was becasue he appealed to a broad group of people. Union workers loved him because as individuals they believed in America first as he did. Congress needs to stop using the government as the stimulus for growth and promote a healthy business climate that stimulate true economic growth. That means lower taxes. That means less gorenment spending, especially wasteful pork laden spending.
Start talking up your candidates if they are on this three point plan. Let’s take back our country!!!
