Third Parties in Swing States Make a Difference, So Don’t Do It!

Protest with your pen and checkbook, note your ballot

I understand why some folks voted Libertarian. I was confronted this year with a US House race (FL-15) where a qualified independent candidate was running. I feared that the Democrat Dr. Blythe, a Planned Parenthood supporter, could win without my vote for the GOP Posey (who won). Consider these cases from this 2008 election yesterday:

  • If 90% of those 29,000 who voted for Barr (L) in Indiana had voted for McCain, McCain wins Indiana.

  • If 60% of those 25,000 who voted for Barr (L) in North Carolina had voted for McCain, McCain wins North Carolina.

  • If those 11,000 who voted for Barr (L) in Missouri voted for McCain, McCain would have a 17,000-win instead of a 6,000-vote recount-margin in Missouri.

  • In addition, if those 13,000 people in Minnesota had voted for Coleman instead of the Libertarian candidate Aldrich, then we could definitely count on Coleman winning and not worry about Al Franken winning in the recount (500-vote lead for Coleman now) amid voting irregularities.

I am all for voting one’s conscience. But there are other ways of telling the GOP you are not happy with them: send a letter and withhold your money, but not your vote. Believe me, I doubt 13,000 Barr votes in Minnesota Senate race really tells the GOP anything. But it could mean that those 13,000 pay much higher heating costs the next six years under a steep carbon credit tax program. Unfortunately, the rest of the country will also suffer.

Don't forget Oregon

where the Constitution Party candidate got over 75,000 votes in a race where Smith lost by 12,000. Granted I wish all conservatives would bolt the GOP and join the CP, but it cost us the seat in Oregon.

Well, Greg, I can now cross another diary entry

off my to-do list.

Look, I too had a tempestuous moment in my youth when I ditched Gerry Ford and voted American Independent party in my first elecion ’cause I was p’od that Reagan lost. I was going to send a message.

I live in MN so for you 8,000+ Constitution party voters who didn’t vote for Norm (and yeah, I have problems with some of his voting record, ‘specially ANWR drilling, and I didn’t vote for him in the primary and I’m a GOP county delegate), if Al freaking Franken wins this recount, you can wrap yourself in your ideological purity as we become the laughingstock of the nation for electing a vile, vulgur, never ran anything, carpetbagged to MN left wing nutcase to the Senate.

And for those of you in GA who fit the same profile, if Saxby Chambliss loses and his liberal whack job opponent becomes the 60th vote to shut off cloture, I hope you’re happy with all the s*@t that’s about to be shoved down all of our throats because Saxby cast a bailout bill vote which you disagreed with.

Folks there’s a time to go to the wall (it’s called the primary) and a time to not shoot us in the head.

Sheesh!!

Thanks for the compliment

Money and letters have much more impact than a third-party vote. I’ve been away for a couple days and have not followed the Chambliss and Smith races. I think at one point Fox put the checkmark of winning on Chambliss on Tuesday night, so that one surprised me. And Al Franken? IMHO, any GOP supporter vote third party with Franken on the D side needs to check their dipstick; oil must be running very low.

One thing that McCain needs to keep in mind: it would have been a lot worse had a pro-abortion, non-conservative politician been chosen as his running mate. Those that dismiss Palin as a drain on the ticket need to open their eyes a bit wider.
