MEMBER DIARY

Dear Republicans: Don’t forget your evangelical base

As the Republican Party continues to adopt more unity of thought on flagship issues, certain members of the party seem to be less and less willing to stand by those principles. This worries me. Many members of the party seem to be forgetting that the Republican party is a vehicle that acts as the glue to hold together a coalition of voters that share common values. The goal is for our coalition to be strong enough to defeat the left wing coalition of demographic groups known as the Democratic party.

The democrat party acts as the umbrella uniting enviros, union workers, minorities, civil liberty advocates, pro-aborts, intellectuals and the poor.

The Republican party acts as the umbrella uniting evangelicals, war and defense hawks, pro-lifers, small government types, tax cutters, the middle class and ironically, libertarians and neo-cons.

My concern stems from the fact that I am an evangelical Christian that stands for life and smaller government. Nation building abroad holds little interest for me. Going to war with unions, enviro’s or civil liberty advocates holds little interest for me. I care about restricting the size and scope of government and not simply holding the line on social issues but pressing forward on the front. I am part of the Republican coalition because I believe in small government and conservative social values. With Romney and Gingrich leading in the presidential primary polls, I am becoming increasingly concerned that neither of these candidates represent me. A few short years ago, Mitt Romney was a zealous advocate for the pro-abort movement and his record of shrinking government is non-existent. Yet, the pressure is mounting on voters like me to “support the party” as not voting for the “R” candidate is essentially a “vote for Obama.”

Nonsense.

Conservatives cannot turn their back on their brothers and sisters in the Republican coalition. If you nominate Romney, realize that we won’t be with you. If you nominate Gingrich, realize that we won’t be with you. We have no allegiance to the Republican party so please do not take us for granted. Republican does not equal Christian. We have to draw a line somewhere. Just because Mike Castle has an “R” next to his name doesn’t mean he represents me. I, like many of colleagues in the Church feel more comfortable fighting on the front lines than shielding ourselves from friendly fire.

Many intellectually void leaders of the party (Ann Coulter for example) continue to force people like Chris Christie, Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney down our throats. No Thanks. The Democrat party will never run Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) or Representative Heath Shuler (D-NC) for president. Instead, they nominate northeastern Senators with the most left-leaning records. It isn’t even a question that they will do otherwise. So why is it that we are expected to support pro-aborts, adulterers, big government republicans and flip-floppers?

Come November, you can blame us when Romney or Gingrich loses, but you have no one to blame but yourselves. When you nominate Bob Dole or John McCain, the burden is on you. But nominate a true conservative and we will be with you. With that, I leave the ball in the court of caucus and primary voters in Iowa, South Carolina and Florida.

I just love, love, love me some ‘if you don’t nominate who I tell you to I’m going to stay home!.’ These posts always crack me up. A couple of further thoughts:

    (1) What’s all of this ‘we’ stuff? Do you have a rugby team in your pocket? Seriously, who are you to speak for all Evangelicals? Or even a large portion of them? Who nominated you as their spokesperson? Come November of 2012, the evangelicals will vote for Romney (or Gingrich) just like they did for McCain. They’re not stupid.

    (2) I might have more sympathy for your position if there were a credible candidate who met with your approval. But there just isn’t this cycle. I don’t know that there is any particular reason for that, ti’s just how it worked out. All of the candidates who happen to be social conservatives are just horrible in about a dozen other ways.

On second thought, do let it hit you. Preferably hard and in the head.

Just who died and made YOU the spokesperson for evangelicals? And, you’re going to sit on your a$$ because you don’t approve of Mitt or Newt and allow the modern equivalent of the AntiChrist be reelected, let the Ds likely hold the Senate and allow – for certainty – ObamaCare and a significantly more radical second term agenda to be passed and cast in stone? Oh, and you can bet your Bible on the fact that at least one conservative SCOTUS justice will likely retire in the next POTUS term. That’ll be one Hell of a result, huh? RvW will continue to be the law of the land and don’t be surprised to see a dramatic extension of the right of the government to eliminate inconvenient people.

Timmy, you are precisely what is wrong with the loudmouth faction of the “evangelical base”. You haven’t a clue, just a megaphone. Hopefully, somebody will stuff the megaphone where the sun doesn’t shine because your incessant whining is offensive and repulsive.

Oh, and just who WOULD you approve of?

Good luck with Romney or Gingrich. They are both losers. In an easy year for Republicans they MAY do better than McCain or Dole, that’s the best you can hope for. Haha. Thanks for your “insight”.

    Tim,

It’s not a question of turning our backs on principles, far from it. I think the situation we’re in is more like, well pretend for a second you’re a jew who keeps kosher. And some non-Jewish person, eating a bacon and egg sandwich starts to choke. You’re the only person who knows the Heimlich. What do you do?

Stand by your principles and let the person die, or start mouth to mouth, knowing full well you’ll likely get some bacon in your mouth and will be breaking the rules of keeping kosher? (gross i know but it was the best I could come up with).

America is choking on Obama. The patient won’t survive another term. I agree with you that our populace has fallen from a moral and principles point of view. But your cause isn’t served by staying home if Romney or Gingrich is nominated.

Let’s get Obama out, and start fixing the very real and direct threats to our country. Before we can start educating people on the finer points of a moral way of living, we first have to get them off of the government dole, and out of a mindset of entitlement. And once we do that, we can start addressing the other issues that are more of a concern to evangelicals. It’s really the only way.

Put it this way, the country’s slide into immorality won’t be halted by your helping to get Barack Obama re-elected. That’s for sure.

You normally don’t have to do mouth to mouth. Also being kosher means not digesting non-kosher foods on purpose. Your example would not apply in this situation.

      Just FYI.
