The Debate: All eyes on Gingrich, Perry and Huntsman

Tomorrow night, ABC will host another GOP presidential  primary debate.  It should be good.  Most of these people know it is do-or-die  time for their campaigns and so we should see them hold nothing back.  The audience that matters are the grassroots people in Iowa and New Hampshire and the two questions are obviously:

Who can create enough momentum to take the lead in (1.) Iowa and (2.) New Hampshire?

While eyes are always on Romney, his support is stagnant.  He’ll perform well, but if anyone does as well or better, they’ll be seen as winning.  So little actual attention should be given to Romney as it is up to Huntsman, Perry and Gingrich to outperform him.  At this point, Romney is a man with little control over his own fate.

The Winner will look like this. . .

The Republican base still searches for the perfect candidate that can speak the language of the base and the language of reason.  I have yet to see a candidate that  can show me why or why not a marriage amendment can pass or how we take the abortion issue away from the jurisdiction of nine Americans while also telling me how he will you fix our credit rating or help Europe back on its feet, or why we should or should not be supporting the Federal Reserve’s policy of Quantitative Easing?  Why should we oppose climate change legislation — is it because global warming isn’t happening or because it will hurt the economy?

If anyone can feed us more than talking points, we will be behind that candidate.  After twenty years of Clinton/Bush/Obama, we need serious solutions.  Who will be that guy?

Iowa will be watching Gingrich and Perry.

Newt Gingrich.  Newt is leading in Iowa and leading big.  But how long can someone with his resume hold on?  If history is any indication, not long.  Newt can best be described by his political persona.  Adulterer.  Rich.  Lobbyist.  Hypocrite.  Petty.  Opportunist.  Against the Ryan tax plan.  Weak on stem cell research.  Supporter of a healthcare mandate.  And now comes the news that he almost went along with Bush I’s tax increase.  This is the guy that is going to win Iowa?  I’m not so sure.

Newt has never been known as a hero to social conservatives.  The Evangelical republican caucus goers in Iowa will be looking for someone who represents their point of view, not someone who embarrasses their point of view.  Newt has a difficult path to victory but he can do himself a favor by throwing out red meat to the socially conservative wing of the republican party tomorrow night.  (Hint: We’d love to hear how you plan to reduce abortions).  Proving his social conservative credentials is his only path to victory in Iowa.  The debate gives him a shot to do it.

All in all, a lot of things have to go right for him to keep this up but much of this comes down to Newt.  How will he handle questions on his record tomorrow night?  Will he satisfy voters when confronted with his own support for the individual mandate?  Will he be able to fight off the attacks from Romney on the left and Perry on the right?  Will he continue to come off as an arrogant frontrunner?  How will he not look out-of-touch?  These are questions Newt needs to answer tomorrow, if he can he may have a chance of solidifying this thing.

Rick Perry.  A lot of people want to count Rick Perry out.  He is down in the polls and even the casual observer has seen his debate gaffe.  But the smart money is on the other factors.  Perry has increased his polling in Iowa to double digits, he’ll be spending a million and a half dollars per week in Iowa saturating all three markets with ads and he is in the midst of a 42 city swing through Iowa.  As Mitt and Newt duke it out, Perry goes unscathed.  He fits the bill of former Iowa winners better than any other candidate currently polling in double digits.  He has the get-out-the-vote machine, the money and the support of Super PAC’s to make this happen.

A stellar debate performance will instantly bump him ten points up, placing him ahead of Paul and Romney in Iowa.  Those ten points by the way, will come from Gingrich who is flying high with 30% support in Iowa, something that doesn’t seem likely to last as Romney hits him on every issue imaginable.  If Perry steals half of Gingrich’s support on the way down, he is now in a commanding first place.  Furthermore, voters want to vote for Perry, they are just waiting for a reason to do so.  If Perry can look into the camera and articulate strong conservative ideas tomorrow, the cable chatter will be all about Perry and his numbers are going to reflect it.

Abraham Lincoln stated that if you gave him four hours to chop down a tree, he would spend the first three sharpening his axe.  Perry may be down, but he is putting in the footwork, tv time and get out the vote effort to pull this off at the last minute.  Unlike any other candidate, Perry has more say over whether his campaign will shoot back to the top or continue to disappoint.  Tomorrow night, Perry can make this all about him — it is his choice.

New Hampshire will be watching.

Jon Huntsman may still be the dark horse in this race.  No one in the base is falling over themselves to vote for him, but if he holds up and continues to slowly rise, he may be the last acceptable guy standing.  He doesn’t need to win Iowa.  But it would help if he could come in third of fourth.  A strong showing there would give him the momentum he needs going into New Hampshire.

If Newt slips, as he likely will, there is a lot of support up for grabs.  RCP has Romney with 36% support in NH, Gingrich with 24%, Paul with 16% and Huntsman with almost 10%.  If Huntsman can pick off half of Gingrich’s support, he comes in a strong second in NH.  If Gingrich voters do look to flee, Huntsman would be the obvious choice to go to.  Gingrich’s people wouldn’t go to Paul obviously, and there must be a reason why they are supporting Gingrich over Romney in the first place (Gingrich is seemingly more conservative).  They are searching for a smart and consistent conservative.  Huntsman is that guy.

With proportional voting in primary states until April, a third place finish in Iowa and second in New Hampshire keeps a guy like Huntsman competitive, especially when you have the record that Huntsman has combined with the media’s love for the guy.  Don’t count this guy out.

Tomorrow night, Huntsman needs to stay on his jobs message while also doing something, anything to show Iowa voters on social issues and New Hampshire voters on fiscal issues, that he truly is a conservative.  It doesn’t serve him well to run from his record.  He needs to give the base something to be excited about and he may find himself holding on long enough to become a competitor.

The Debate.
Tomorrow night will only be about the people with the money and infrastructure to win.  The base is still looking for a guy to coalesce around.  It could be Newt, it could be Perry, it could even be Huntsman.  Look to see who remains positive while landing a few blows and deliver some conservative rationale for their position.  Over 60% of republican support is soft support ready to jump on board with the winner.

Tomorrow night, a winner could be forged.  I hope these three take it seriously.

set foot in Iowa, and I thought he was excluded from the Dec 10 debate in Iowa, because of his national poll numbers.

Having watched Huntsman’s speech at the RJC Forum on Wednesday, even though I want to see him do better in this nomination contest, I really think he fails to energize anyone. Maybe he can block Paul in NH.

    otherwise, a good post :)

Perry needs a Top 3 out of Iowa to become the big media story. Yes, he has to be near perfect on Dec 10. He has sharpened his ax very well past few weeks!

    • carolynr

Ron Paul. The man will not be the candidate…he is too extreme on foreign affairs…however his supporters will back him until they die. Why Romney is even a consideration in Iowa is beyond me…he can’t even make that state a priority.

THE ONE AND ONLY REASON that Gingrich and Romney are polling well in Iowa is THE ETHANOL SUBSIDY. Give them what they want…and they will vote…money ahead of principle.

      • lizzie

        Ron Paul.

Tim Griffin: yes, only six on the debate stage on Saturday.
And not much primetime competition to ABC at 9 pm ET.
On cable, ScyFy and Hallmark have new movies, and USA has an excellent NCIS repeat, but that is about it.
Should be the biggest viewership for any GOP debate this year. (as tempting as “Snowmageddon” and NCIS repeats are for me, I shall be glued to ABC)

I know WaPo is not usually unbiassed, but thought Cillizza had a serious post today on Rick Perry: the Iowa “X” factor. Trying to figure out if Perry will attack Romney and/or Gingrich. Completely misses Ron Paul is running the most negative attack ads,

        http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-fix/post/rick-perry-the-iowa-x-factor/2011/12/09/gIQAFtRUiO_blog.html

        MY comment was:
“Gov. Perry will work the ground game in Iowa, and let the others be. His biggest challenge is to generate enthusiasm with Iowa caucus goers to go caucus for Rick Perry on January 3, 2012. He has their attention, and his “Repeal” ad was his quick pivot back to key issues.

Romney made a huge mistake in ignoring Iowa, especially with his very noticeable absence at the Nov. 4 Iowa GOP Ronald Reagan dinner, where Gingrich was incredible (my reaction, as a distant observer).

The Huckabee Forum on Dec. 3 gave Rick Perry a big lift in Iowa. (Interesting to see the different impact of the Huckabee bump for Perry and Sarah Palin’s shoutout for Santorum the same weekend).

The dynamics in Iowa are now mostly about trying to “contain” Ron Paul, who is using Obama’s 2008 ground game playbook in Iowa. Yet, Paul is the one doing the most negative advertising.

Perry’s focus on military veterans on Thursday was overdue, but also just in time.

I just wish everyone would spell Carhartt correctly.”

I do not know if Cilizza wrote his post before Perry’s SCOTUS gaffe with the Des Moines Register today, but glad he noticed Perry is #4 in Iowa, and is getting traction.

The online snark over Perry’s “Strong” ad has been dangerously silly, and I do not understand why YouTube allows parodies.

Good thing the snarkers are now ballistic over Gingrich’s interview with JLTV, wherein the History Professor gets it correct:
the palestinians ARE an invented “people”.

real life beckons for the next week – might only be able to read RedState, but this is going to be some week.

Thank you for pointing out my error! I would correct it if I was able to edit this post.

Does this seem just fishy to anyone here? I can write Cain’s commentary here:

“Romney/Gingrich is a great guy and you should vote for him!”

    • bzip

Yep, I read that too. Talk about bias at Fox. You already know that Cain truly dislikes Perry so don’t expect any kind words from Cain about Perry. We already know Cain supported Romney in 2008 and Cain also likes Newt so I don’t expect any hard words from Cain in regards to Romney or Newt.

      • avagreen

totally disgusting. They are after the viewership by foisting this nincompoop as a commenter.

Are they this desperate for ratings?

Claims he stepped out of the race for his wife’s sake and also asserted that he thinks the attempt to destroy him is coming from both sides of the aisle. Hinted that he and his attorney are plotting how to go after false allegations against him. Hannity seemed to buy all of it.

        Stay tuned.

        • avagreen

There’s a reason why Hannity can’t be reached by email any longer through FOX.

Same reason that Leno can’t be reached…..NBC protects him.

(I think we have a fox guarding the henhouse…….think there’s a pun in there somewhere.)

going against Perry. Bzip, go to National Enquirer.com. Breaking news, etc on Newt.

          EXCLUSIVE! NEWT GINGRICH SECRET MISTRESS
          http://www.nationalenquirer.com/celebrity/exclusive-newt-gingrich-secret-mistress

I don’t know how this will play out – it might even get Newt more votes as people run to his rescue :-) . I personally think the record of Newt as a politician is damaging enough *IF* people open their eyes.

          • windwaker24

They run articles like this all of the time. A couple years ago, President Bush and the First Lady were supposed to be getting a divorce. Generally, they just make up a bunch of stuff, but they were lucky about John Edwards. They just want to sell magazines. If it were true, the lady would have went to a credible news network or paper and broke her story there.

          • bzip

That is my feelings too. I haven’t and won’t push things like this. Newt’s record, character and honesty from well know documented places are enough to work with without muddying the water up with this secret mistress stuff.

          • trevorb

is not immune to what happened to his fellow candidates, even if he thinks he is. Look where Cain was just a month ago and now he’s out of the race. A lot can happen between now and the primaries.

Nevertheless, the three I think have an actual shot at winning are Gingrich, Romney, and Perry.

          • wbf

out there. I saw it the other day at some website. I never believe something if I only see it from one source. Even though I do not like Newt Gingrich, I did not want it to be true. Then I saw it again this morning at the Daily Caller online and I think the London Telegraph ran the story.

          • windwaker24

She said it happened in 1977, yet now she’s saying something. What is the point of telling this story? We know Newt was a cheater back then. Her story would mean something, if true, if it happened after he married Calista. Has her story been verified? If there were something to this story, it would have been on national news already.

      • lizzie

Sunday news program, which broadcasts on Fox affiliates in the morning, and repeats on FOXNews cable channel twice, on Direct TV where I am at 2pm and 6pm..

Which counts for a lot more than people realize because it is usually the only FOX news show that everyone watches.

Also on Dec 11 – all about Iowa:
CBS: Face the Nation has Michelle Bachmann.
NBC: Meet the Press has Ron Paul ( I might even watch just to see if David Gregory goes for the jugular, or not)
ABC: This Week, so far, just going to focus on the post-GOP debate.

At some point, Mr. Cain will fade back into motivational speaking.

    • znjs

some random reference to SimCi.. I mean 9-9-9. We can only hope he pulls it out when asked about someone’s answer to a foreign policy question.

    • Scope

and my first thought was that no matter how great a job Perry may do, Cain will go all in for Newt or Romney. He also told Hannity that he has spoken with both frontrunners, and will be making his endorsement soon.

One of the things that really struck me was when he very vehemently said he would definitely not be getting back into the race because the allegations would all start again. If he knows for sure that he will not get in, why did he just suspend his campaign, rather than end it? I guess EE is correct that he can get matching funds if he only suspends. After the last SEC filing, Cain said that his campaign had no debt. It was after that that he started gaining more campaign funds, but from all reports I read, he only added enough staff in Iowa up to about 35ish. He wasn’t going hog wild in spending his campaign dough. He had said in an interview right before suspending that he wondered what he would do with all the donations, so he apparently still has campaign money. If he collected donations, and used some of those donations for campaign expenses, why does he need or qualify for matching funds? Would those matching funds just be money that he can keep and use for anything he wants, even personal items? If other candidates back out after Iowa or NH, and just suspend their campaigns, then they can claim matching funds also? Something really stinks about that whole idea.

      • avagreen

        but, ya REAUHLIIZZZE, that’s he’s……..not a “politician”?

        LOL!

        What a liar.

  • carolynr

Fox News and Hannity have lost ALL creditability with me. Talk about bias. This was touted as the values news network. Herman Cain is a bs artist. There…I have said it. separate checking account to help some poor waif with her bills without Momma knowing about it. If my husband was paying bills for someone else without letting me know about it…I’d be off the reservation…but if it was a woman…Well I see Elana Bobbit’s point of view. This man, Cain, has been against Perry from the very beginning and I don’t know why. This stupid rock had NOTHING TO DO WITH PERRY…and it was painted over…the family did not own the stupid land…they leased it. Then…supposedly…Perry outed him on his love affairs…or whatever you want to call them… and declared this to be true of Perry WITHOUT PROOF. This is the man that is going to give fair and balanced reporting? Know what else that tells me…the people running the station have a bigger problem them the people “talking” on the station….they are the decision makers.

So…America…do you think that you have been led astray by people that proclaim to be one thing and do another…in other words…hypocrites. I’ll answer it for you…YES YOU HAVE. Karl Rove…Go away…you are in the Bushie camp. Dick Morris…now that is a piece of work. Can anyone remember…”go to Dick Morris.com”. I’ve heard it enough to vomit. The guy isn’t about analysis…he’s about self-promotion.

Fox wonders why the other networks, who are all minions of the LEFT, call Fox…not a real news organization. Well…Roger Ailes…you gave them the fodder for that…when you gave Cain post debate analysis.

Maybe….I’ll do the deed and see if I can get on Neil Bortz show Monday.

    • texasroots

next thing Roger Ailes will say is that Cain is “hot” not politically savvy like he said about Palin. What a joke?
