Rick Perry Strengthens his stance on Life

Over the Christmas weekend, Rick Perry decided to strengthen his stance against the practice of abortion.  Perry, who I was at one point hesitant to support due to his support of abortions being performed on unborn babies IF those children’s conception were a result of rape or sexual relations between family members, has now changed his view to the more consistent stance of protecting all human beings from the practice of abortion.

This change of heart comes after watching a recent documentary in Iowa and just a few days before the Iowa Caucuses.  Honestly, I don’t care what Perry’s motivations are, the important thing is that the pro-life movement is gaining ground.  I support Rick Perry for President and a move like this makes me want to hit the phone banks for him.  Whether the decision is political or not, we will hold him to it.  This is our guy and this really is our moment to get somebody decent to win in Iowa.

As pro-lifers, the burden is on us — the protectors of life, to pressure our leaders to take the right moral, scientific and political stance.  Sure, democrats will demonize such a position in the general election, but it is the right position.  Besides, voters realize that if you believe a fetus is a human life, the only consistent position is to protect all life in line with the Hippocratic Oath.  Anything else is an attempt to have your cake while eating it.

This makes me personally, very proud of Rick Perry and gives me hope that he can pull together a coalition strong enough to take down a Massachusetts Liberal, an extreme libertarian republican, the has-been and disgraced former Speaker, as well as the former Senator that supported Specter over Toomey and lost his Senate seat by almost 20 points.

I am going to hit people like Stupak and Nelson hard when they betray us.  So we need to reward our guys when they make the right call.

Well done Governor.

If anything this shows great humility on his part to (again) admit he was wrong and that he’s following a new principled course.

Tea Partiers, here is your chance to have the candidate you’ve prayed for all this long time. For heaven’s sake DON’T BLOW IT.

I was Pro-Choice.. but then I just saw too much first hand.
I can scarcely debate the topic.
I am glad Mr. Perry has come to my point of view.

but you weren’t on the eve of needing a Top 3 finish in a presidential race in the next couple of weeks, so I don’t doubt your sincerity, snowshooze.

But as for Mr. Perry, welcome, Governor, to the fold of we who believe that all babies deserve the right to life.*

We have a Texas “Strengthener” to fight the MA flip flopper.

from being in favor of allowing abortion in cases of rape or incest to being against it. And Romney’s flip flops have also been in the right direction. It’s the timing of both men’s changes that is the evidence you can use to judge for yourself their sincerity.

Having said that, Perry would be a darn sight better than Romney.

    Hear, hear!

I’m a pro-lifer permitting abortion “only in case risk of death to the mother”. And every step should still be taken to try to save the baby. I’m assuming this is now Perry’s position on the issue?

Newt also holds the same position as Perry did, on the rape/incest position.. Hoping he also sees the light. But regardless, rape/incest is involved in less than 1% of abortions, so it’s not as big a deal in the grand scheme of things. I’d happily accept an exception for those cases for now, to be patched up later.

Also, it’s unfortunate, but 80% of Americans approve of abortion in the case of rape or incest. Convincing them otherwise will take time.

Frankly, when 1,000,000 babies are aborted yearly, are you going to say no to a law that saves 990,000 of their lives, “on principle”?

      • texasref

I’d happily sign a law if I were president that saved 99.9% of babies, including a law prohibiting abortion except in cases of rape or incest. That doesn’t change the fact that I am against abortion even in cases of rape or incest. We get what we can when we can get it.

If a firefighter can only rescue some of the family members before it’s too hot to go back in, should he just stand outside and do nothing? If he goes in and only rescues some, does that mean he wanted the others to die? Come on, please.

It’s a big deal to the baby who is MURDERED.

How about you just don’t support a candidate with whom you disagree instead of engaging in hyperbole and saying that they can’t be elected. Do you realize that most (if not all) of our Republican candidates have this view? Are you saying that none of our candidates can be elected?

      Give me a break.

I admire this man more and more. We will be so blessed if we get him for our president.

Here is an article where he explains his change of heart:
    http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2011/12/rick-perry-modified-abortion-stand-again-mothers-life-only-exception/

Perry was getting by just fine on his strong pro life record. He knows all the right things to say when giving a pro life speech, and he can say them with conviction, because he knows they are true. He did not have to reveal this change of heart in the midst of his campaign. By doing so he leaves himself open to the accusations he has so often leveled at other candidates of being a flip flopper or a panderer.

Perry chose to be honest and humble enough to admit he was wrong. He is doing far more than just being honest though. His powerful story of meeting and looking into the eyes of a young woman, knowing that her life began with the rape of her mother, and realizing that she has as much right to be alive as any other person will no doubt change other hearts besides his own.

“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Matthew 5:14- 16

    Well done, Governor Perry.

Like you, the more I learn about Perry, the more I respect him.

And I think your quote from Matthew is quite fitting. When Perry first got into the race, I supported him; but when he started to stumble, I had my doubts. But I started to pray, asking God to help me to discern whom I should be supporting. Almost every day, I have prayed that the nomination go to the candidate who would most seek, know, and do His will, and who would lead this coumtry in the way He wants. And as the weeks and months have worn on, Perry’s “light has so shone before men,” that I have become convinced that Perry is the right choice. And come heck or high water, I’ll be a Perry girl ’til the end.

P.S. You sure are up late! But I guess that makes sense because cheetahs are nocturnal. :)

but thanks for reminding me- it is still long past my bed time.

….I think this is a great move, and I’m glad he’s becoming more consistently pro-life and not afraid to admit the change, given that it reflects his already existing pro-life worldview.
