How Rick Perry turned on the Tea Party

Upon Chief Justice Taney’s death, President Lincoln was tasked with replacing the Chief Justice of SCOTUS.  Monty Blair had served as a loyal friend throughout Lincoln’s first administration.  Likewise, Edward Bates had proven his loyalty to Lincoln over-and-over again.  Both were well qualified men.  Both greatly desired the position.  Yet, in the end, Lincoln knew that there was but one choice that would best serve | Read More »

Today, we can honor our military by remaining vigilant

Today is Memorial Day where we remember and honor are troops — both past and present.  In the 1700’s, Americans sacrificed their lives and their fortunes to guarantee freedom against the tyranny of Britain.  In the 1800’s, Americans took up arms against one another in the interest of protecting state’s rights and the Constitution on one hand, and the protection of the American Union and | Read More »

Obama allows your children to go swimming for one more summer

Promoted from diaries. Last week, news was made as today’s deadline approached for commercial and municipal swimming pool owners to install means, by which disabled swimmers could enter the nation’s swimming pools.  It is the kind of regulation that would make a great punch line for the conservative version of the Daily Show, if conservatives were that funny.  The Obama Administration has recently construed the | Read More »

Constitutional Equal Protection provides no shelter for gay “marriage”

Two weeks ago, North Carolinians overwhelmingly demonstrated that voters still innately understand that marriage is a license to be held exclusively by one man and one woman.  The next week, the President ceased his wink-and-a-nod “evolution” campaign and came out in support of homosexuals being able to take part in the institution of marriage. There is certainly the question of morality involved when discussing marriage | Read More »

Greece can cut now, save later

Greece’s voters are facing a potential election next month.  Voters there are restless.  Its politicians have proven unable to form a governing coalition for almost two weeks.  The problem is relatively simply, Greece has spent itself into bankruptcy.  They were bailed out by the EU and now, must pay back some of their debts.  However, without a functioning government, it will be difficult for Greece | Read More »

    Mitt Romney’s Liberty Commencement fail

This weekend, Mr. Romney visited Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia to better sell himself to evangelicals.  It was an epic fail.  I know, I witnessed it, I was there. To be sure, we’ve had to listen to evangelicals toot his horn for days now.  The local paper, twitter, facebook — it seems as if everyone in the area loved Romney’s speech.  I was there, and | Read More »

    A deal is a deal

Last year, Congress made a deal with the President.  They argued that if we were to raise the debt ceiling, there would be no one willing to cut borrowed government spending, which, after being out of control during the previous President’s eight years — have jumped up again under this one.  They argued that this was the line in the sand, that we couldn’t move | Read More »

Marriage wins by an overwhelming margin

Tuesday, the voters of North Carolina voted to protect marriage as between one man and one woman.  It became the 31st state to protect marriage and did so through a constitutional amendment. What is striking about the victory isn’t that it passed, but the margins its passed by.  The latest tally puts support for the bill at 61.05% for marriage with 38.95% against.  The overwhelming | Read More »

A weak flip-flopper wins the presidency

During the presidential primary campaign of 1928, Franklin D. Roosevelt wasn’t doing so great.  He was more of an uncommitted and moderate democrat compared to his frenemy and fellow New York pol, Al Smith.  Compared with the hugely successful Smith, Roosevelt was panned as the “weak-willed” “corkscrew candidate”. The problem with FDR was that he was out-of-line with his base.  He was a flip-flopper.  He | Read More »

Pepsi sees the light on abortion . . . Kind of

Congratulations to the many Christians that successfully convinced PepsiCo to alter it’s contract with the unethical biotech firm known as Senomyx Inc.  Senomyx is a company Pepsi contracted with in 2010 to conduct flavor testing for new soft drinks.  The problem is that Senomyx harvests cells from aborted fetus’s to create new and tasty soda flavors.  While this author will admit to consuming a few | Read More »
