Obama on tax increases, getting our nations priorities back on track
“Senator Obama took a very different approach to the crisis our country faced. At first he didn’t want to get involved. Then he was “monitoring the situation.” That’s not leadership, that’s watching from the sidelines.
And watching from the sidelines is exactly what got us into this mess. It was the lack of accountability and oversight that put your tax dollars on the line. But it shouldn’t be surprising that Senator Obama isn’t interested in protecting your tax dollars.
Senator Obama has proposed more than 860 billion dollars in new spending. He was asked in our debate Friday to name a single program he would consider cutting to help our country through this crisis, and he struggled to name a single program!
Senator Obama is a fan of all that spending because he’s always cheering for higher taxes or against tax relief. He’s voted that way 94 different times.
Two times, on March 14, 2008 and June 4, 2008, in the Democratic budget resolution, he voted to raise taxes on people making just 42,000 dollars per year. He even said at the time that this vote for higher taxes on the middle class was “getting our nation’s priorities back on track.” Then something amazing happened: on Friday night, he looked the American people in the eye and said it never happened. My friends, we need a President who will always tell the American people the truth.
Senator Obama’s record of higher taxes and more spending isn’t going to help “95 percent” of Americans, as he likes to say: it’s going to hurt 100 percent of us by growing government, slowing growth, and destroying jobs.
Times are tough for our economy, but I am confident America and Americans will emerge stronger than before. I will do my part. My commitment to the American people is this: I will clean up the Wall Street mess, reform Washington, and focus the entire federal government on a pro-growth agenda that creates jobs and gets this country back to work and back on track.”

Baghdad spending budget surplus
Baghdad seeks to buy arms from Europe
LONDON, Oct 1 (KUNA) — The Iraqi government has begun talks with European allies about arms purchases as it rebuilds its military in a drive towards independence from US forces, it was reported here Wednesday.
Iraqi representatives have visited UK defence officials in recent months as part of a series of “fact-finding” missions in Europe, according to people close to UK Trade and Investment, the agency charged with attracting investment into Britain, the Financial Times (FT) newspaper said.
“It is a concerted effort to see what is available in the marketplace”, said one official familiar with the talks.
The Iraqis were interested in a range of equipment, from secure communication systems to border protection technology, the main business daily in Europe said.
The talks underscore Iraqs ambition to strengthen the capabilities of its security forces as they increasingly take over operational control from the US military.
The US has also pushed to arm Iraq for the same reason.
Iraq has spent about three billion dollars (1.7 billion pounds), money from its own resources, mostly on US-made military equipment, including rifles, pistols, ammunition, mortars, various aircraft and a range of transport vehicles, through the US foreign military sales (FMS) programme since January 2007.
Some of the larger items include 140 Abrams tanks, made by General Dynamics, six Lockheed Martin military cargo aircraft and 24-Russian-made armed reconnaissance helicopters.
US companies have already supplied roughly half the ordered equipment, while the remaining 1.5 billion dollars is under contract.
Iraq has about 300 million dollars remaining in its FMS account, according to a Pentagon spokeswoman.
Future equipment sales are expected to be financed by Iraqs rising oil revenues, the FT added. (end) he.bz.

“We did not arrive at this moment by some accident of history. This was not a normal part of the business cycle. This was not just a few bad apples on Wall Street. This crisis is a direct result of a philosophy that the folks running Washington have been following for decades. It’s a philosophy that says we should give more and more to those with the most and hope that prosperity trickles down to everyone else; a philosophy that says even common-sense regulations are unnecessary and unwise; a philosophy that lets lobbyists shred consumer protections and put the needs of special interests ahead of working people. And what we have seen over the last few weeks is the final verdict on this failed philosophy. It is time to turn the page.”
McCain speaks to National Guard and smacks Obama
Im not hearing these quotes in the media, i think he is being de-conservatized like they did Bush. Yea i know i made a word you get the idea..
“Our nation faces many challenges. We have all watched the crisis on Wall Street this past week, and I would like to address that for just a moment. Last Friday, I proposed a plan for comprehensive reform of the broken institutions that allowed this crisis to become a grave threat to our economy. At the center of the plan is the principle that we must keep people in their homes and safe guard the life savings of all Americans by protecting our financial system and capital markets. Senator Obama has declined to put forth a plan of his own. At a time of crisis, when leadership is needed, Senator Obama has not provided it.”
We saw this same lack of leadership on Iraq. Because of the sacrifices and perseverance of all the troops — active-duty, Guard, and Reserve — victory in Iraq is finally in sight. My opponent, Senator Obama, likes to say that the surge in Iraq was more successful that anyone could have predicted at the time. He said that the surge succeeded, “beyond our wildest dreams.” That’s his way of saying that it took him by surprise.”
And to this day Senator Obama still cannot bring himself to admit his own failure in judgment. For a guy who talks so much about hope, he didn’t hold out much hope for victory in Iraq. Instead, he commits the greater error of insisting that even in hindsight, he would oppose the surge. Even in retrospect, he would choose the path of retreat and failure for America over the path of success and victory. Behind all of these claims and positions by Senator Obama lies the ambition to be president. What’s missing is the judgment to be commander in chief. In short, both candidates in this election pledge to end this war and bring our troops home. The great difference is that I intend to win it first.”

Dick Morris
McCain should take a page out of the playbook of the endgame of the Bush 1992 campaign. With Bill Clinton holding a solid lead, Bush was reluctant to attack him for his record of tax increases, especially given his violation of his 1988 “read my lips” pledge not to raise taxes. So the campaign sent Vice President Dan Quayle out to attack Clinton, day after day, for raising taxes. And the results were clear in the polls. Bush gained each day and, four days before Election Day, Bush took a lead over Clinton in the tracking polls. Clinton was saved by the announcement by Iran Contra Special Prosecutor Lawrence Walsh that he was planning to indict Cap Weinberger, Bush’s Defense Secretary.

Robert Gates on Iran
Sec Robert Gates decides to start talking about the Iranian hostage crises
Zbigniew Brzezinski — President Jimmy Carter’s national security advisor — told the Iranians that although it had supported exiled Shah Reza Pahlavi’s rule in Iran, the United States would accept the revolution, would recognize the new Iranian government and would follow through on arms sales contracted by the shah’s government, Gates said.
Brzezinski noted the United States and Iran had a common enemy – the Soviet Union – and said the two nations could work together.
“Their response was, ‘Give us the shah,’” Gates told the students. The exiled leader was in the United States at the time for medical treatment. Each side repeated its position a couple of times, and finally, Gates said, “Brzezinski stood up and said, ‘To give you the shah would be incompatible with our national honor.’ And that ended it.”
Three days later, Iranian radicals seized the American embassy in Tehran.

Freddie Mac Subpoenaed
Freddie Mac (FRE Quote – Cramer on FRE – Stock Picks) said Monday it has received a federal grand jury subpoena related to accounting, disclosure and corporate governance issues, and that the Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating the mortgage-finance company as well.
The subpoena is for documents related to accounting, disclosure and corporate governance from Jan. 1, 2007, onward. Freddie says the SEC directed the company to “preserve documents,” though it did not provide any specifics about the inquiry or what documents the agency is seeking.
Spokeswomen for both U.S. Attorney Michael J. Garcia and the SEC said they have a policy to “neither confirm nor deny the existence” of an inquiry or investigation.
Freddie received the subpoena from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, and a notice from the SEC’s enforcement division, on Friday.
Freddie and sister company, Fannie Mae (FNM Quote – Cramer on FNM – Stock Picks), were rescued by the government with a cash infusion early this month as bad mortgage debt threatened their capital levels and market confidence. CNBC recently reported that Fannie Mae also received a subpoena. There have been calls from lawmakers and outside observers to investigate Freddie’s and Fannie’s business practices as a result of their near-failure, which threatened to further devastate the U.S. housing market.
Freddie’s stock recently rose 23 cents, or 11.5%, to $2.23, in morning trading on Friday.

Coalition, Iraqi Forces Continue Pressure on Insurgents
WASHINGTON, Sept. 28, 2008 – Coalition and Iraqi forces continue their relentless assault on al-Qaida in Iraq and “special groups” criminals with targeted raids that get these terrorists off the streets.
Even as violence trends downward – Iraq has the fewest violent incidents since early 2004 – coalition and Iraqi forces are keeping the pressure on insurgent groups. Operations this weekend targeted terrorists in the north and around Baghdad.
In the north, coalition and Iraqi forces detained 12 suspected al-Qaida terrorists in five coordinated operations in Mosul and nearby Al Qasr. Forces zeroed in on al-Qaida car bomb networks yesterday, targeting a wanted man believed to plan and execute multiple attacks against Iraqi citizens and coalition forces. Five others associated with the man were also captured during the raids.
An operation 80 kilometers southeast of Kirkuk resulted in detention of two suspects affiliated with al-Qaida. The operation was targeting a wanted man who intelligence reports suggest is an al-Qaida operative. The man is also wanted for involvement in gathering operations used to plan attacks against Iraqi security and coalition forces in the area.
Acting on tips from detainees, coalition forces targeted senior al-Qaida in Iraq leadership networks in Bayji Saturday. Three suspects were apprehended during the operation.
Coalition forces also detained two suspected terrorists during a raid on Saturday 116 km northeast of Baghdad. The detainees are believed to be associated with regional al-Qaida leaders in Northern Diyala.
Iraqi Army soldiers captured a suspected al-Qaida member Sept. 25 in Tarmiyah. The suspect is an alleged explosives expert and is believed to have plotted several kidnappings, murders and indirect fire attacks in Taji and Tarmiyah and their surrounding areas northwest of Baghdad.
Al-Qaida’s car bomb and financial networks were further debilitated by the capture of seven suspected terrorists during coalition operations Saturday and Sunday.
An operation in Baghdad Saturday netted one man believed to be a key player in al-Qaida’s car bomb. Another suspect was also detained during the operation.
Coalition forces, acting on a tip, targeted another man alleged to be one of al-Qaida’s bookkeepers in eastern Mosul early Sunday. When forces arrived at the location, the man was taken into custody without incident. The detained man – al-Qaida’s paymaster – led coalition forces to a second location where they arrested four more men believed to be his associates.
Iranian-backed groups also fared badly this weekend. Coalition forces apprehended five members of the Kataib Hezbollah network Saturday morning in new Baghdad.
In an intelligence-driven raid, coalition forces targeted suspected criminals linked to recent rocket attacks against Iraqi security and coalition forces.
Coalition members captured the five suspects in three separate locations without incident.
Coalition forces also apprehended three more suspected members of the Kataib Hezbollah network early Sunday in Naharwan, about 25 km east of Baghdad.
Acting on intelligence information, coalition forces targeted a suspect who has been linked to Kataib Hezbollah operations in and around Baghdad.
Coalition forces entered the suspect’s location, where he was identified to be the wanted man. The alleged criminal and two of his associates were detained without incident.
Coalition forces have captured more than 30 Kataib Hezbollah criminals in the last two months.
Officials said Kata’ib Hezbollah is a proxy of Iran, and its members are believed to employ improvised rocket assisted mortars as well as explosively formed penetrators in civilian areas.
All security forces in Iraq combined to get weapons off the streets this weekend.
U.S. soldiers with Multinational Division Baghdad found a weapons cache in the Adhamiyah district of Baghdad. The munitions consisted of nine AK-47 rifles, six grenades, two cans of blasting caps, two Iraqi Police uniforms, 10 digital cameras and a VHS camcorder.
Later Iraqi policemen found a cache in the West Rashid District of Baghdad. The munitions included 10 60 mm mortar rounds, six Iranian-manufactured 81 mm mortar rounds, nine 82 mm mortar rounds, a white phosphorous 82 mm mortar round, a 120 mm mortar round, a 100 mm high-explosive projectile, 13 85 mm rounds, two Iranian-manufactured anti-tank rounds, an Iranian manufactured AT-1 PG-7, eight expelling charges, three hand grenades, a Mills bomb, propellant for the PG-7, an improvised grenade, a 6-inch long improvised-explosive device filled with approximately 1.5 pounds of explosives, a roadside bomb encased in foam consisting of two 82 mm mortar rounds, a 57 mm projectile and a bottle of homemade explosives.
A tip from a local citizen pointed U.S. soldiers to six 107 mm rounds in a canal northwest of Baghdad.
Finally, Iraqi Army soldiers northwest of Baghdad found what appeared to be five jugs of nitrogen and called for an assessment. An explosive ordnance disposal team identified the materials as four five-gallon jugs of diesel fuel and a five gallon jug of sugar, which were likely to be used as a bomb.

Hans Blix report documents Saddam never accounted for WMD
####Clearly Saddam was in violation of the cease fire agreement
Chemical
The document indicates that 13,000 chemical bombs were dropped by the Iraqi Air Force between 1983 and 1988, while Iraq has declared that 19,500 bombs were consumed during this period. Thus, there is a discrepancy of 6,500 bombs. The amount of chemical agent in these bombs would be in the order of about 1,000 tonnes. In the absence of evidence to the contrary, we must assume that these quantities are now unaccounted for.
Bilogical
Iraq has declared that it produced about 8,500 litres of this biological warfare agent, which it states it unilaterally destroyed in the summer of 1991. Iraq has provided little evidence for this production and no convincing evidence for its destruction.
There are strong indications that Iraq produced more anthrax than it declared, and that at least some of this was retained after the declared destruction date. It might still exist. Either it should be found and be destroyed under UNMOVIC supervision or else convincing evidence should be produced to show that it was, indeed, destroyed in 1991.
As I reported to the Council on 19 December last year, Iraq did not declare a significant quantity, some 650 kg, of bacterial growth media, which was acknowledged as imported in Iraq’s submission to the Amorim panel in February 1999. As part of its 7 December 2002 declaration, Iraq resubmitted the Amorim panel document, but the table showing this particular import of media was not included. The absence of this table would appear to be deliberate as the pages of the resubmitted document were renumbered.
Missiles
Two projects in particular stand out. They are the development of a liquid-fuelled missile named the Al Samoud 2, and a solid propellant missile, called the Al Fatah. Both missiles have been tested to a range in excess of the permitted range of 150 km, with the Al Samoud 2 being tested to a maximum of 183 km and the Al Fatah to 161 km. Some of both types of missiles have already been provided to the Iraqi Armed Forces even though it is stated that they are still undergoing development.
No money in defense bill for 11,550 airmen
But Congress never forgets Acorn funding..
By Sam LaGrone – Staff writer
Posted : Sunday Sep 28, 2008 9:38:16 EDT
In June, Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced the end of the Air Force drawdown.
But, apparently, no one told Congress.
A Sept. 24 joint congressional report on the 2009 defense bill says lawmakers have not authorized funds for more than 317,050 airmen.
That is considerably fewer than the 328,600 airmen Gates said he intended to keep in uniform through the end of fiscal 2009 — the approximate size of the force right now. Even so, there are no plans to cut 11,550 airmen.
The reason for the disconnect: Neither Gates’ office nor the Air Force ever went to Congress to formally ask for more airmen, according to congressional staffers.
“They have not changed that request since the budget was submitted in February,” according to a spokesman on the Senate Armed Services Committee.
By law, Congress sets the size of the military and the individual services can’t exceed their authorized end strength by more than 3 percent — that’s 326,551 airmen if the current authorization stands, which means the current end strength is about 2,000 airmen over that.
No problem says Defense Department spokesman Lt. Col. Les’ A. Melnyk, who says the Air Force, or any service, can exceed even the 3 percent overage because the president declared a state of national emergency following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. That means, he said, “in effect, there is currently no end-strength cap.”
But even though the Air Force may exceed its authorized personnel level, that doesn’t mean money has been set aside to pay the extra airmen. Those funds will have to come from a supplemental budget request or be scavenged from other Air Force programs, said a Senate Armed Services Committee spokesman.
“We do not oppose the Air Force’s efforts to maintain a higher end strength, and expect the department and the Air Force to work with the Congress in finding appropriate funding sources in 2009,” read the congressional report.
Source of funding unclear
A Senate staffer familiar with the situation said the Air Force would likely get its desired troop strength, but so far the source of the cash is unclear.

Saddam’s WMD: Discovery and Denial
Now that our units in Iraq have discovered the smoking gun that the left has seemingly wanted for the past three years, they have shifted the goalposts again. And one more time, the facts of Saddam’s WMD must be presented to the American people to counter the lies of the media, and regrettably, some people in our own government agencies.
The left and their allies in the press are apparently too dense to understand the significance of the Coalition previously finding biological agent seed cultures, several hundred tons of purified nuclear material, and tons of chemical weapon (CW) precursors. But this entire controversy has never been about the weapons themselves, the age of the munitions, or the media promoted fantasy of pallets of chemical rounds ready to be loaded into Iraqi artillery pieces. From the beginning it has been about the campaign of disinformation and deception of the antique media and the shadow government within our intelligence agencies to discredit the administration in a time of war.
The SecState and Pre—war Intelligence
A typical response to the NGIC report on these chemical weapons is found in a piece by Dafna Linzer in the Washington Post. After briefly covering Santorum’s and Hoekstra’s news conference, Linzer quotes the proverbial unnamed ‘intelligence officials’ who said that these,
…shells were old and were not the suspected weapons of mass destruction sought in Iraq after the 2003 invasion.
This is a false statement and in fact, directly contradicts publicly divulged US and European pre—war intelligence estimates as stated by both the President in his 2003 State of the Union address, and former Secretary of State Colin Powell’s speech before the UN a little over a week later.
Scaring us to death-Walter Williams
Recall that during President Carter’s last year in office in 1980 what was called the “misery index”, which was defined as the sum of the inflation and unemployment rates, was about 22 percent: inflation averaged 14 percent; unemployment was 7.5 percent. Today’s inflation just became 5 percent, having been between 1 and 3 percent for a decade, and unemployment is 6.1. Cox and Alm say that today’s problems “will turn out to be mere footnotes in a longer-term march of progress.” They add that, “Since 1982, the United States has been in recession for a mere 16 months, the present slowdown notwithstanding. Over that period, the country more than doubled its inflation-adjusted output of goods and services and created jobs for an additional 50 million workers.”

Kerry inches ahead of Bush: poll
Ill never forget going to work and telling lefties Bush won. The look on thier face was priceless they had convinced themsleves Bush had already lost. I then said “didnt you know? the polls are always padded democrat”. A friend of mine had called in so i rubbed it “Marc got drafted on the way to work he is in basic training right now”
But polls are not to be taken lightly, weighted polls were used in the 2006 elections and we lost congress. And they serve as emotional crack for lefties because they certainly cant argue on issue. Especially when they have a candidate that has to lie out his rear on national TV and make a complete arse out of himself for power..
