Shock! Cherry Pickers Accuse Cherry Pickers Of Picking Cherries

Count me as one among millions of the skeptics of this whole “human-induced global warming” chicken little phenomena. I believe it is, by far, the biggest money grab ever concocted by a bunch of ne’er say die hippies from the 60’s who never fully got over being ignored. That said, we have an interesting response from the head whiner caught in the middle of the aptly named “Climate Gate” conspiracy:

Michael Mann, co-author of the Copenhagen Diagnosis and lead author of the UN IPCC Third Assessment Report, blamed skeptics for taking the personal emails out of context.

“What they’ve done is search through stolen personal emails—confidential between colleagues who often speak in a language they understand and is often foreign to the outside world. Suddenly, all these are subject to cherry picking,” he said.

They’ve turned “something innocent into something nefarious,” Mann added.

The vital point being left out, he said, is that “regardless of how cherry-picked,” there is “absolutely nothing in any of the emails that calls into the question the deep level of consensus of climate change.”

This is a “smear campaign to distract the public,” said Mann. “Those opposed to climate action, simply don’t have the science on their side,” he added.

Translation?

“We, here in our cushy little echo chamber, talk in our own language of colloquialisms and double-speak and we all agree with each other. That makes us right because we’re smarter than you are.”

In a separate piece at the WSJ, the head dude at the unit where the emails were originally “stolen” from offered an even weaker faux-defense of his colleagues:

Phil Jones, director of the University of East Anglia’s Climate Research Unit, from which the emails were lifted, is singing from the same climate hymnal. “My colleagues and I accept that some of the published emails do not read well. I regret any upset or confusion caused as a result. Some were clearly written in the heat of the moment, others use colloquialisms frequently used between close colleagues,” he said this week.

Hunh…who knew scientists could accidentally SAY the whole thing was a scam when what they meant to say was that the earth is doomed to die in 10 years?

My favorite bit in today’s episode comes from Vice-Chancellor of Research Trevor Davies, AGAIN, from the research unit where the emails were originally “stolen” from:

“There is nothing in the stolen material which indicates that peer-reviewed publications by CRU, and others, on the nature of global warming and related climate change are not of the highest-quality of scientific investigation and interpretation.”

[snip]

Professor Davies called the stolen data “the latest example of a sustained and, in some instances, a vexatious campaign” designed “to distract from reasoned debate” about urgent action governments must take to reverse climate change.

Pot? Meet Kettle. Kettle? Meet Pot.

BTW-vexatious means we, the “we don’t believe you” crowd, are annoying them.

I will shrug

jccbin Saturday, November 28th at 1:56PM EST (link)

If Congress and these nitwits get their way, I will shrug.

I will turn my every asset into cash or gold and I will cease to do business with these governments, these liars, these fascist progressives. And I will not support a Republican who tolerates them. Get some guts or get out. I have had it with civility.

I will make sure every tax dollar they take from me costs them 2X what they collect. I will make them feed and clothe me while I work against them. I will not work for them as a slave.

A Generous “If” and Erroneous “Tolerates”

ntrepid Saturday, November 28th at 6:04PM EST (link)

I suspect your introductory “if” will be answered in the positive very soon and “tolerates” will be supplanted by “joins”.

There should be no surprise here when the brave Sir Lindsey and his merry band speed all efforts to save us yet from this now mortally wounded theory.

Nitpicking of wording aside…I’m with you.

The response from the left has been fascinating

ericstenner Saturday, November 28th at 2:20PM EST (link)

If there really is no climate crisis that is a good thing, right? Why wouldn’t everyone want to get to the bottom of this to find out if it’s really necessary for us to reorganize the global economy because of a nonexistent problem?

It looks like this is finally starting to trickle out into the mainstream media. It will be interesting to see if/when/how the Obama administration ever acknowledges this, and whether it will have any effect on the Copenhagen talks. Is this going to be just another in a long series of appearances on the global stage where our president looks like a complete buffoon?

Not at all "fascinating". Rather it's very predictable.

mbecker908 Saturday, November 28th at 2:37PM EST (link)

The Left bases their existence on lies. Their problem is that if Global Warming goes to hell based on the obvious lies they’ve been perpetrating, “Health Care” is next. Remember the “47MM uninsured”? It’s a lie.

Then there’s foreign policy and national security.

Oh yeah, let’s not forget their “leaders”, people like Teddy Kennedy and John Kerry who are “American heroes”.

When you build your house from cards you can’t afford to have one pulled from the foundation.

Disproportionate Response is a good thing!

Speaking of response, has anyone else noticed

throwback59 Saturday, November 28th at 2:40PM EST (link)

that since the emails got out we are suddenly inundated with stories on how global warming is worse than previously thought? It seems as if the MSM is doubling-down on their bet. They are doing everything they can to try and make ‘climate-gate’ go away.
Seems like the scientific community finally cloned a human, too bad for them it was Clifford Irving.

The only TV stations in English in the hotels are BBC and MTV. On BBC, all of the newscasts that referred to climate change, assumed it to be a real and immenent threat. At least back home the media pretends to portray it as not settled. I’ve heard no mention of the emails and data released either.

There has to be some counter to this over there?

I'm sure there is.

NightTwister Saturday, November 28th at 3:17PM EST (link)

I’m also sure it’s much smaller and even more marginalized. The news reporters really do think of Americans as flat earthers, and how Obama may “finally bring some sense to the debate from America”. The people here have never experienced the freedom we have, so it’s really not surprising.

NightTwister, then I'm sure the Euroweenies will be

so happy to know that Obama and Co. are working feverishly to disallow that freedom thingy you mentioned. With an all too complicit media helping them at every turn….

NightTwister Sunday, November 29th at 1:44PM EST (link)

I caused them to think, and to get them to realize that Obama is actually trying to give us less freedom than even they have. Now, that is truly scary.

NightTwister, now that you mention it, I was

reading a column by Gerald Warner in whichever British paper he writes for the other day. It was about Climategate. The comments were interesting for me to read, as several of the British posters were hopeful that citizens in America would be the ones to lead the way on proving how much of a fraud this subject is because we have a press that is reporting on the emails that were made public. Either they have faith in our media that we do not, or they happened to see/hear the subject mentioned on Fox or in some publication.

I wonder just how many people in other countries are beginning to wake up to the notion that America won’t be leading the charge to rescue them during the next few years, won’t be using our power as a free and prosperous nation to ride herd on the bad guys anytime soon.

What is truly painful is to realize that, thanks to Obama’s choice of world leaders to befriend, many people will look at America as one of those bad guys.

They will despise us.

NightTwister Monday, November 30th at 6:24AM EST (link)

It’s the one constant in the universe. Whether we help other nations or not, whether we do what they want (or think they want) or not, they will still despise us. This is why it is so stupid what Obama is doing by trying to make us more liked abroad. They will still despise us, but will also be snickering behind the scenes because Obama thinks he’s actually making relations better.

As for me, I’d prefer the they may not like us, but they will fear us tactic. At least you get respect that way.

Certainly in agreement with that sentiment,

Obama keeps talking about this "crisis"

Scope Saturday, November 28th at 2:42PM EST (link)

as thugh the emils and data leaked never happened. In his speech, with the visiting Prime Minister of India, he still talked about the need for action, as though the Indian PM doesn’t understand english, or his interpreters don’t understand spin when they hear it. That night they had a party, or rather a state dinner, you know the one where the uninvited lady in the cherry dress showed up. This is funny because it was the Indian PM who was here at the time, who will not destroy his countrys growing economy over something not only unproven, but now disporoven.

TNJim Saturday, November 28th at 6:15PM EST (link)

but they are reduced wattage. A 60-watt bulb is now 53 watts (maybe 57, can’t remember, but still). Phillips and Sylvania still sell full-power bulbs, but I wonder how long that will last. Speaking of lasting, it seems they don’t last as long as they used to. Possibly another way of trying to rope us into buying CFL’s, which are supposed to last 5 years or longer.

No, thanks. I’ll continue to buy incandescents because I don’t want to have to call a HazMat team in case of a broken CFL.

What Are We Supposed to Look For?

lukematthews Saturday, November 28th at 4:36PM EST (link)

These nimrods who had their emails published are crying foul because their hoax was exposed by people who are looking for questionable practices. Should they be looking for Evites to university mixers? Should they be collecting Ecards sent for their birthdays? Should we peer into the emails about meeting someone for lunch? For heaven’s sake, of course we are looking at the emails that are shady and not the ones asking whose going to bring the cookies for the office get together. Why would we look at the emails detailing that which they have published? People want to know if there is a conspiracy, which in spite of the left’s belief system, is a secret pact and not a public one.

If Green Energy was so good...

kowalski Saturday, November 28th at 5:11PM EST (link)

If Green Energy was and is so good, why — in the biggest Democrat state in the country proportionally — has Massachusetts resisted placing wind power in the NOAA Class V-VI wind area off of its coasts?

The United States possesses large, untapped wind energy potential. Wind energy has not been developed anywhere along the 95,000 miles of U.S. coastline. Land-based wind energy projects have been developed and are typically located on mountain passes or flat, broad plains where strong winds blow consistently. Coastal wind energy is becoming more feasible as our abilities to predict wind speed, variability, and energy potential
improve. The best site for coastal wind energy is in the vicinity of Cape Cod and Nantucket Island where wind power may attain class 6.”

In other words, the costal areas of Massachusetts are, in the estimation of NOAA, *THE BEST* prospective areas for the development of wind energy in this country. What is being built there?

Nothing. Crickets and raindrops. There’s zero going on there.

This isn’t a meaningless question or an unimportant one politically. Massachusetts consistently has the third or fourth highest electricity rates in the country and the coastlines here have some of the *best* wind areas in the hemisphere. But there aren’t any large windfarms here, and the one or two turbines you do see are barely turning. One can only conclude that the important people who live along the coastlines don’t want them.

Ted Kennedy was one of those who fought against it. nt

Since places from which you can see water

Achance Saturday, November 28th at 5:43PM EST (link)

are the most expensive places in the Country, you’re pretty much only going to have “important people” directly on the coasts. It is just as true here as it is in MA or CA. You wouldn’t believe what a hovel built in the mining days in the early 20th Century along Gastineau Channel goes for here, or a “cabin” with no utilities out on Shelter Island accessible only by boat.

You’re never going to see any kind of economic activity in those areas beyond a few fashionable stores. A geographer whose name I can’t recall styled the West Coast from SEA to San Diego west of the mountains as Ecotopia. The people who live there have grown wealthy off the wealth generated by natural resource extraction, agriculture, and manufacturing east of the mountains in what the same geographer styled the Empty Quarter. The people of Ecotopia simply cannot stand to see any of the things happen that have made them wealthy and powerful; they simply will not tolerate economic activity of any sort other than shopping and a little “head work” in their field of vision. We need to round them up and send them out to work the harvests and be re-educated. Not all the communists’ ideas are bad.

Also the PETA people fight them..

Massachusetts would rather buy oil from Hugo Chavez than disturb the sanctity and pristine sight lines of the wind areas near Nantucket. And that is exactly what they do. Even if energy prices here triple, there will never be wind farms off the coast of Nantucket. You can take that to the bank.

The scientists *are* the science behind the Manmade Global Warming Issue

6eorge Jetson Saturday, November 28th at 5:54PM EST (link)

(Man-made modifies “Issue”, not “Warming.)

Mark Steyn of the National Review writes about this “Peer Collusion” :

And that’s what Andrew Revkin (of the NY Times) did, week in, week out: He took the words out of Michael Mann’s mouth and served them up to impressionable readers of the New York Times and opportunist politicians around the world champing at the bit to inaugurate a vast global regulatory body to confiscate trillions of dollars of your hard-earned wealth in the cause of “saving the planet” from an imaginary crisis concocted by a few dozen thuggish ideologues.

Earlier in the article, Steyn cites specific actions of the thugs

Here’s what Phil Jones of the CRU and his colleague Michael Mann of Penn State mean by “peer review.” When Climate Research published a paper dissenting from the Jones-Mann “consensus,” Jones demanded that the journal “rid itself of this troublesome editor,” and Mann advised that “we have to stop considering Climate Research as a legitimate peer-reviewed journal. Perhaps we should encourage our colleagues in the climate research community to no longer submit to, or cite papers.”

So much for Climate Research. When Geophysical Research Letters also showed signs of wandering off the “consensus” reservation, Dr. Tom Wigley (“one of the world’s foremost experts on climate change”) suggested they get the goods on its editor, Jim Saiers, and go to his bosses at the American Geophysical Union to “get him ousted.” When another pair of troublesome dissenters emerge, Dr. Jones assured Dr. Mann, “I can’t see either of these papers being in the next IPCC report. Kevin and I will keep them out somehow — even if we have to redefine what the peer-review literature is!”

Which in essence is what they did. The more frantically they talked up “peer review” as the only legitimate basis for criticism, the more assiduously they turned the process into what James Lewis calls the Chicago machine politics of international science. The headline in the Wall Street Journal Europe is unimproveable: “How To Forge A Consensus.” Pressuring publishers, firing editors, blacklisting scientists: That’s “peer review,” climate-style.
