Obama: The Will Of The People Be Damned – I’LL Decide Who Can Go Fishing

*Now* he means to ration recreational fishing and boating, folks

It all started here this morning:

The Obama administration will accept no more public input for a federal strategy that could prohibit U.S. citizens from fishing the nation’s oceans, coastal areas, Great Lakes, and even inland waters.

I had to read that 3 times before it sank in…and then I did a little research. Guess what old Barack (I’ve never had a fishing rod in my hand a day in my life) Obama has been up to since last year? Plotting a Federal takeover of all our bodies of water (freshwater…saltwater…doesn’t matter), in an effort to set up MORE bureaucracies and circumvent the rights of the States to determine fair use and access rules amongst themselves based on the local interests of everyone involved.

If he was out to ban recreational fishing this piece would be easy enough to write; scream a little, stomp my feet, vow he’ll have to pry my fishing rod from my cold dead hands, etc…and be done with it. Problem is, this is much darker and more corrupt than that.

The White House plan would establish 9 regional planning bodies (bureaucracies) whose job would be to bring “Federal, State, and Tribal Partners together” to look for ways to “decrease user conflicts; improve planning and regulatory efficiencies and decrease their associated costs and delays; and preserve critical ecosystem function and services.”

It should come as no surprise that the Administration is no longer accepting comments or input from the public (though you should click through to see some of the doozies that WERE accepted), and it should come as no surprise that a member of Obama’s Administration (Jane Lubchenco, NOAA administrator) has some interesting ties with a couple private charities and goofy greenie groups whose interests will be very well served by a Federal takeover of our various bodies of water:

While she possesses impressive academic and professional credentials as a marine biologist, she also has close ties to those who produced the November document. For example, she was a trustee of the Environmental Defense Fund, and served on the Pew Oceans Commission.”

More below the “who needs jobs and successful multi-billion dollar industries anymore, anyway?” fold…

More info here, and a call for some Asian Carp-killing love here. Don’t miss the policy pdf here if you really want your head to explode. Read between the lines folks…this will lock down oil exploration faster and farther than the moratorium Congress JUST let expire ever did, and allows the greenies to set policy for fishing AND boating (at the expense of millions of jobs and billions of boating and fishing industry dollars).

ALWAYS worry when you read this from Obama’s people: “The planning process would be fully transparent and participatory.” and don’t forget to laugh out loud when you follow up with this timeless classic: “Places Science-Based Information at the Heart of Decision-Making. Scientific data, information and knowledge, as well as relevant traditional knowledge, will be the underpinning of the regionally developed plans.”

How’s that “settled” climate change science mumbo jumbo working out again?

Can’t remember where I read it now but there was a few articles out about a land grab to crimp oil exploration as well.

The whole thing smacks of medievalism with a ruling class to decide when and how we can do even the smallest of things in caring for ourselves.

land grabs in the name of national monuments under the rule of the Antiquities Act…

      • http://hillbillypolitics.com Steph C

Yup, that’s the one. Note that the land being “considered” would be closed off to development that Utah seems to want to develop?

    • Achance

status so that it will be harder to develop. It is a distinction without a diffence in a Democrat Administration because there ain’t gonna be NO developement on any federally owned or regulated land PERIOD in a Democrat Administration. What it does in a Republicn Administration is make the Administration go through the hassle of rescinding the status or repealing the status if it is done statutorily.

The rest of it is buying “inholdings,” the hated private land in and adjoining various federal lands. The Environazis were up here raising Hell last week about the State’s action to once again allow trapping wolves on the State lands ADJOINING Mt. McKinley Nat’l. Park. The Park is over 6 Million acres, but apparently some “park wolves” wander over into State lands and the evil Alaskans trap them and turn them into VERY nice parkas. I once had a waaaay cool wolf parka but I lost custody of it.

And Robin of Loxley arose in rebellion against the Prince who unjustly revoked the use and property rights of free men, who possessed the ancient right to hunt for their own food. If Prince Obama revokes our rights to fish in American waters, he will create millions of Robin Hoods who will flagrantly disobey Obama’s law.

  • Return to Revolution

implies public input was accepted at some point – which I doubt. No question I am focused on HC and 2010… But stories like this make wonder longer term how much of this will ever be repealed.

    • renny

but if Cong. is some fit of true self destruction passed a ban on any human use of our waterways for fishing or any other activity, then the turn around is harder, because not only does the leg. have to pass both houses but a pres. has to sign it.

  • spainishirish

if not full-scale civil war. I realize the fanatics and idiots who comprise this Administration can be quite clueless, but certainly not this clueless. Just imagine the jurisdictional turf wars over such insanity. The Great Lakes states that voted for Obama would be in the forefront of his ouster if more federal intrusion were allowed in them.

  • Tbone

Urban liberals only fish at a sushi bar.

However, urban liberals do understand the old west addage that he who controls the water rights win.

  • Achance

If water runs over, under, around, or through your property, they intend to have the federal government in control. Right now federal authority over private land extends only to those adjoining navigable waters and those that invoke some environmental laws, e.g., Clean Water Act, etc. They want it all. The goal of Comrade Obama’s administration is clearly to eliminate states as anything other than administrative agencies of the US.

    • etlib

The feds are in control everywhere anyway. Here in San Diego we have those “Vernal Pools” which contain microscopic organisms which are supposedly protected. In the vernacular “vernal pools” areusually refered to as “mud puddles”: shallow standing water that appears after a rain and then dries up.

My son works a s an environmental engineer and a lot of his job is helping companies design buildings, etc. that meet the regulations and convincing bureaucrats that things are OK for building. He tells me that he has been told by some of these bureaucrats that some arid areas are “wetlands” just because a particular species of weed is growing there.

end up in the Supreme Court… Hey… there’s a thought… how about someone who has the time/money/inclination trying to take apart the big b’s of the Fed by challenging their right to exist under the Constitution regarding parts that trample over the States reserved rights?

Nothing like a *constitutional scholar* to destroy the country from within…

  • http://www.thesubstratum.com GJ Merits

But I think some people are starting to see just what we are up against here. Certainly we have not forgot that Obama exempts INTERPOL from search and seizure on US lands. We will wake up when we wake up.

Nullification (please read the post and comment there so as not to fill up space here) is a perfectly useful constitutional option. It is not secession, it is not revolution. And trust me, Obama is just getting started:

    http://www.redstate.com/gman2008/2010/03/05/nullification-our-nuclear-option/

The title really should be changed to Nullification – Our Constitutional Option. The word nuclear does make it sound radical. A careful reading of the post and other links as well as a reading of the material at http://www.tenthamendmentcenter.com/ and, if you have the time, both books The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Constitution and The Politically Incorrect Guide to American History will convince most naysayers this is not only a good option and a necessary one, but a constitutional one as well.

    • RedBeard

The basic idea of 10th Amendment resistance to federal government overreaching seems quite rational, so why would you be attacked? Anyone standing for states’ rights and against unconstitutional power grabs by the feds should be applauded.

Then I followed the link you provided. It’s not your message, it’s your method that invites criticism. By the way, the preceding sentence was not an attack, but rather an observation.

    • http://www.veronicaestrada.com/ Veronica Estrada

I read your nullification thread, GJ.

      I’ve learned that it’s hyper-something.

People understand, but there can exist a consensus to sit and ponder and reflect .. or say nothing at all.

Just because people aren’t saying anything doesn’t mean they aren’t considering your points.

      • http://www.thesubstratum.com GJ Merits

There was another post where I brought this up and if you look in the comments for the post I linked to I took a pretty good beating. The other post where I brought this up was a Dan Perrin post:

        http://www.redstate.com/dan_perrin/2010/03/05/killing-obamacare-is-a-rational-act/

I admit to reacting back in a way that I shoud not have. My first reaction should have been to step away from the computer. :-)

I do believe people considered my points. Oh boy did they!

        • http://www.veronicaestrada.com/ Veronica Estrada

and I must say I greatly admired Neil and Achance’s responses as usual (flatter, flatter). They are what make Redstate fun.

Which is why using the word “attack” isn’t such a good idea.

If you’re a Thomas Jefferson guy, he was for a market of ideas — and if your stuff survives, more power to you.

But I think ppl will get annonyed at some point about you threadjacking everyone’s post.

If you really want to get under everyone’s noses, start twittering, where you can monitor the reception of your ideas. If you get no followers, it’s not them, it’s you and your presentation, like Redbeard said.

That being said .. get a beer or two or three, chill .. and go Twitter.

And make sure you RT everything from Redstate and the major conservative sites.

Cuz conservativism isn’t just about your ideas, GJ.

If it were, then we’re talking about another sort of dicatorship and that ain’t nice.

  • Vladimir

But if you mess with fishing, bub, you’re going to have to deal with about 2.5 million pi$$ed off Louisianians.

Go ahead. I f’ing dare you.

    • louisiana

Just sent the HA article about this to a Cajun friend who has a fishing camp on the gulf. Wait until they try to regulate the shrimping industry. I guess they missed the Landrieu video when she went to Reserve. Rajin’ Cajuns will be a misnomer.

    • http://www.veronicaestrada.com/ Veronica Estrada

      I was pmsing.

I will heartily defend your right to fish to the death.

Publicly, I tell you I’m sorry.

      *end hijack*

    • Achance

What they really want are the commercial fisherman, especially the big corporate ones with the factory ships. Compared to the Russians, Chinese, Japanese, and Koreans, even the most rapacious American commercial fishers are saints, but that doesn’t matter to the EnviroNazis.

Frankly, the industry is not without sin, especially on bycatch issues; they dump a lot of dead fish and fish waste on the ocean bottom and create “dead zones” with the decaying carcasses. It is alleged also that they damage the ocean floor by dragging gear. I dunno. All I know for sure on these issues is that the first liar doesn’t have a chance.

      • Common_Cents

I too wouldn’t think recreational fishing would be a big target as most fisherman also hunt and own many guns ;)

But gaining more control of the waters can leverage into targeting any imports/exports that move in and out of the US. Especially energy. “Gee we can’t afford another Valdez, we need to tax them and regulate them even more.”

        • Sundayjack

I was just saying the same thing this weekend, while they were having a Whale Wars marathon on the “Green Network” (or whatever it’s called).

Question (unrelated to the fishing debate): If Paul Watson is a vegetarian who lives on his ship seven months a year, how come he’s tubby as a Macy’s Day float?

          • edintexas

Watson was kicked out of Greenpeace for his advocacy of violent confrontation. Founded an outfit which became Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. Sea Shepherd was identified to Congress, by the FBI, in 2002 testimony as an ecological terrorist organization.

Of course the general public doesn’t know the facts, and Animal Planet could care less. I only see the commercials, but even then I root for the Japanese. I have to admit I would not be as patient as the Japanese have been, but then they have had a strong pacifist tradition since late 1945.

      • spainishirish

that can lead to a TKO if not properly executed. Frankly, as important as this story is, I might have skipped it but/for the recreational fishing angle. By the time I got into the meat of the article and realized how truly ominous this is, I was boiling mad.

I suppose an argument can be made that the Corps of Engineers already exercises this type of federal overreach, But the federalism issue here is enormous and this will be explosive as states and localities resist the final independence they can exercise over their waterways.

    • bigmaude

Here in Oklahoma where the wind comes sweeping down the plain, we got some really nice ponds and lakes…….um well anyway I mean, okay, I was thinking….about differnt’ kinds of bait. Oh yea now I ‘member Trolls is what I think we will use this spring when we go for our striped bass at Texoma! Yea, that’s what I was jus’ thinkin’.

    • http://www.thehayride.com MacAoidh

“Now they’ve screwed the pooch. Obama’s Ocean Policy Task Force is talking about shutting down recreational fishing.

THAT?S GOING TO PISS OFF SIXTY MILLION PEOPLE. My Green friends got mad when I would not sign a letter telling Obama how much we appreciated his creation of the group to formulate overall fisheries and ocean policy. I wouldn?t because they?re pushing aquaculture which could decimate our best in the world fishery. Turns out they’re the kind of whacko’s who did n ot understand my fears for the fishery and don’t understand the implications of such a ban. There are 350,000 Louisianians with saltwater licenses and countless bait salesmen, boat companies, sporting goods shops, etc. AND THE 600 CHARTERBOAT CAPTAINS I REPRESENT STRUGGLING TO MAKE A LIVING. This is not only scientifically stupid but political suicide.

This is all over the net — Google Obama and Fishing.

I was at the Ocean Policy Task Force hearing in New Orleans. Each speaker got one and a half minutes to express their concerns. I spoke. You can?t talk about the fishery, the proposed ban on oysters and the failure to check out the poisons in imported shrimp in 90 seconds and I said so. I later told Madame Lubchenco that we in Louisiana were pissed and sick and tired of having outside government agencies telling us what we had to do in Louisiana.

I asked her who would bear responsibility if our billion dollar per year fishing industry was destroyed because of escaped fish, diseases, parasites, etc. Who would bear responsibility. When she could not answer that question, I asked her if she knew about Chinese drywall and all the problems we have with no one to take responsibility. SHE DID NOT KNOW WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT!

I have not been a basher of this administration but this is sheer stupidity. Without recreational and commercial fishermen, there is no Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. There is no one to regulate anything ? I might ask just how they intend to enforce such bans when there is no state agency.

LDWF operates on license fees from the very people who would be outlawed if the Ocean Task force continues this insanity.”

I’ve been reading up on EO’s & I think this adm. will use this to get around any bill they can’t pass. Regarding this diary– this meansthe Feds will control the waters off all the coastlines of the U.S. + the Great Lakes. That means they will virtually control ALL businesses/industries that operate in those waters. O couldn’t get his crap & tax bill passed to control oil co., so this is his end run around that. I’ve mentioned many times before, that these &**&% wanted to nationalize the oil industry & this is their way to do it. You know they will say that the oil co. cannot operate without negatively impacting the “ecosystem” in the gulf. I’m looking into solar energy.

When I read that story yesterday, the first thing that popped in my mind was imagining her on the Group W bench being asked what she was there for. Really, that’s what popped in my mind.

And now today, another Alice’s Restaurant reference. Just another reminder of which folks are running the government now.

    • http://www.dcworksforus.com Kenny Solomon

But if I remember, I also said that’s part of the endgame…. anyway, it doesn’t matter now that a bunch of people including me stepped all-too-close-to-the-edge (and some went over – way over), because big chunks of a lead-up to ‘something’ is happening – and it’s happening at lightning speed for an already incredibly bloated government.

      ============

The only thing I can’t figure out from this entire mess – and it still keeps gnawing at me that somehow I know, but I don’t know – is something that can get me into real trouble and danger……… and that’s speculating in public on how they’re gonna go about disarming the population before they kick in TCTGTW*.

By the way…… Anyone hear yet that Rupert Murdoch is moving Newscorp (owner of Fox News)………. to Abu Dhabi ?……. Can’t tell yet if it’s the current Middle East main office (if they have one), or the whole corporate shootin’ match.

Some articles are saying it’s the Middle East unit and others are saying it’s the entire corporation’s management and corporate operational structure.

Here’s one article that kind of says both things are what’s going on……… Murdoch – Abu Dhabi is future base for News Corp.

  • in_awe

We have seen this strategy implemented in CA and the far west for decades now.

Liberal (progressive?) groups realized that their utopian land use policies would never gain popular political support. They concluded that an easier way to control growth and development was to grab seats on local and state agencies that control water.

So take a look at your local water resources board, even your water district. You’ll find new restrictions imposed such as no new development with a guaranteed 20 or 30 supply of water. Or density regulations that force more multi-unit residential construction instead of SFR with lawns and yards. Or banning development completely – a government “taking” without compensation (see Lake Tahoe area land owners).

In CA the Coastal Commission can control activity up to FIVE MILES inland from the ocean. Trust me, they get into a lot of mischief with that span of control!

The liberals accomplished this via appointments to boards by political allies, or via winning on the ballot for open seats with tiny vote counts.

  • in_awe

“no new development with a guaranteed 20 or 30 supply of water”

    should be:

I observed that there were quite a number that were repeated. Most I saw were prefaced by “As a concerned citizen” and proceeded to plead for the Administration to take control of our water ways. Most if not all of said comments read either “unaffiliated” or “individual”. These among the accepted comments mind you.

Thus there was necessarily a massive spam campaign to fill the box before outraged citizens were allowed to comment. This is going from ridiculous to absolutely insane. (Not that Obama would listen to us if the spammed comments were filtered.)

Used to be you had to pay the King to catch his fish or snare his rabbits. Of course, killing his stags and harts was not allowed at all.

So it’s a return of the forest laws only now the fish and rabbits, as well as the stags will be off-limits.

Sportsmen are the best ‘watchdogs’ we have to detect pollution and abuse – they hate it even more than the enviro-wackos do because they actually feed the fish they catch to their families.

Without anglers visiting every corner of every lake, the potential for abuse by ‘friends of the administration’ (corruptocrats) will be huge and all ‘transparency’ will be lost.

What amazes me is the slight of hand that creates an environment where people are not informed. The lack of information is on purpose. It helps their cause.
For instance take the recent actions by BHO 1) to give Interpol authority here which empowers the World Courts inside our territory (no search warrants, wiretapping on demand, search and seizure, complete authority over domestic law enforcement) 2) Clinton’s and BHO’s support of the UN Small Arms Treaty (contents unknown but rumored to be similar to previous attempts to remove individual dun ownership) 3) discussions/support for UN to control and protect our navigable/territorial waters 4) UN actions and fines on polluters can now be enforced..
It all fits together. Redistribution of wealth and the ruination of our country is the goal. The elite will be in power and we will be living in mid-evil times.

The liberals should be screaming about #1 all by itself. It provides far more capabilities for intrusion into privacy than the Security Act.

…this would truly be the thing that united Americans against him.

I can’t possibly imagine this gaining any legitimacy, no matter what the heck executive order he signs. People won’t heed it. They’ll just laugh at him if he tries. States will tell him to get a life.

Fishing is a non-partisan activity. Take it from me. I fish leagues and tournaments, and spend at least 2-3 days a week on the water angling and joyriding with the family from the week the ice melts in the spring until it threatens to reform in the fall. Democrats love to fish every bit as much as Republicans, maybe more in some regions.

For the people who truly love it, it is a way of life, far more than just a hobby. If he were to try something like this he would put the final nail in the coffin of his mandate to govern. People who have been straining to give him the benefit of the doubt would finally recognize the illegitimacy of his agenda, and they would simply refuse to obey, refuse to comply, and local governments would refuse to enforce.

He would have as much success enacting this as he would telling people they could no longer attend the church of their choice.

I did a little project, for another site, where I watched Thomas each day. Most of what Congress did was approve land to be acquired by the federal government, adjoining state parks, and otherwise. That was when they were not voting to rename post offices and federal buildings. I started taking an account of the number of acres, it was in the multi-thousands. Remember during the story of Robin Hood, the King owned all the deer in the forest and killing one was punishable by death? Well, this is a plan to starve the population like the Russians were starved in the Ukraine! Resist.

The amount of power that Obama is amassing under the executive branch and effectiveley passing the law making bodies of government is massive and scary. He is rapidly becoming the equivalent of a dictator with policy being set by him and carried out by bureaucrats approved by no one except himself. It is time to get this rectal cavity out of government.

Got any ideas? Don’t you think voting just doesn’t work any more? I mean all of the other orifices in leadership have the same ENDGAME?

The federal government, particularly under this President, continues to grab for more power and control. We do not need federal control of all waterways. Granted, careful control of the ocean fisheries is important as other countries from around the world excessively fish our waters. However, we don’t need the feds to control the local bass fishing hole.

This Congress and this Administration must go. We can deal with Congress this Novemeber but, we have three more years of dealing with our dictator President.

Great article – the bottomline is Obama is doing just what he said, “Spreading the Wealth.” Why would anyone be surprised their are outside interest groups involved – that is his way of life. Before he become Senator in Illinois, he spent all of his time getting grants for these outside interest groups – this man as we speak is still allowing our hard earned money to sneak out the backdoor via grants. If only people would start researching this, possibly it could be stopped.

Thanks for the great blog, keep them coming; there are so many things happening out there behind closed doors, that none of us really have a clue what’s taking place in our White House.

    May God Bless America

…and he can eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he can eat for a lifetime.

Make it a crime to fish, and the man is dependent on the government to provide food to eat.

Does anyone besides me think that this seems to fit a pattern?

On his radio show this morning Mark Davis called this a hoax. Davis stated that the modicum of truth was the Administration’s plan to sign on to a ban on commercial fishing for Bluefin Tuna.

Unfortunately the only readily available support for this news I found is “Media Matters”, which doesn’t cause me a warm feeling.

Another old saying is give a man a match and he can keep warm for a day, set him on fire and keep him warm for the rest of his life. Any one got some gasoline.

I now have two huge targets on my back–I am a conservative “Indian”, living on another former reservation (the vast majority of them were ceded back to the US government, but were magically “resurrected” in the 1960′s by this bunch of radical hippies, who went to law school rather than have to go halfway around the world to fight their comrades), who operates a fishing camp!! Our private property rights AS WELL AS our inalienable right to the pursuit of happiness are in dire peril.
This banner of “social justice” will turn out to be a wicked, divisive tool in prying our precious liberty from the citizens of this nation.

ps. does anybody out there wonder why the greenies protest the Japanese whalers, yet are tacitly mute on the ‘right’ of so-called “native americans” to slaughter whales with power boats and high-powered cannons with impunity?
