Of course we WANT Obama to fail. The policies he does enact WILL fail. And America will succeed in spite of it.

Rush Limbaugh asked a genuine question this weekend at the CPAC Conference in Washington in response to the supposed controversy surrounding his comment a few weeks back that he “wants Obama to fail.” He asked this time (see here and here):

“So what is so strange about saying I want Barack Obama to fail if his mission is to reconstruct and reform this nation so that capitalism and individual liberty are not its foundation?”

Seems like a reasonable question, doesn’t it?

Some, however, like to distort this seemingly uncontroversial and unsurprising sentiment to mean that Rush (and those who likewise want Obama to fail) wishes ill toward America. But how can that be if what you are opposing is an agenda that you believe is categorically harmful for the well-being of our nation and its citizens?

Keep in mind, that there are countless reasons we have already seen to be deathly afraid of where the country is headed under President Obama’s leadership. His nominees have been a disaster in quality and in ideology. Imagine a Supreme Court picked by President Obama. The Obama-Reid-Pelosi stimulus bill will saddle our nation with trillions of dollars of debt, do very little to stimulate economic growth, and offers very little in actual tax cuts (see Heritage letter here). His position on abortion is scandalous and well-documented – from letting babies die in hospitals to funding international abortions and forcing workers to participate in abortions or similar procedures unwillingly. His early steps to shut down GITMO and to move these dangerous individuals into the United States may well endanger American lives. He is already taking steps to give the federal government increased power over our healthcare, enact a radical environmental agenda and otherwise radically decrease freedom and increase the power of government.

Yet, a few Republicans (e.g. Cantor, Steele, and probably some others) have found themselves either disagreeing with or distancing themselves from Rush so that they can appear inclusive, non-divisive and “for things” rather than “against things.” (the not-so-new, “new” code among Congressional Republicans according to Byron York).

For these Republicans or any others who want to play politics to appear “moderate” or “inclusive,” I would ask: “which specific provisions of President Obama’s agenda do you wish him to succeed in accomplishing?” Seriously. I want to know. Which part of his ACTUAL agenda?

The answer cannot be anything other than “I want him to guide our troops safely abroad to protect America,” or certain other examples of decision-making as commander-in-chief. Because if it’s one ounce of his agenda, Republicans are either not being honest or they are more gutless than I thought.

But, the issue here is not whether we want Obama to fail in his agenda to radically re-shape America – we do. (little head nod to Animal House). No, the issue is that we KNOW that his policies CANNOT POSSIBLY SUCCEED.

We know those policies will fail. Why? Because we know that expanding the size and scope of government, appointing activist judges, taxing the American people, spending money that we do not have, eliminating personal responsibility by bailing out failures, and empowering government to take away our freedom is a prescription for failure.

The only way our nation will succeed is IN SPITE of this destructive, anti-American agenda. It will be because of the innate competitive spirit of Americans, a belief in freedom, self-determination and personal responsibility… and a firm reliance on the hand of Divine Providence.

So, to Rush – Godspeed. Keep beating the drum – of course we want Obama to fail. And those who say otherwise are either not conservative or dishonest.

But consider a modest addition to your position – and that is to make clear that we KNOW the Obama agenda will fail to work, so it will be incumbent upon us to combat the media, academia and the pundits to make clear that even as America slogs through the current mess and ultimately succeeds – it is absolutely IN SPITE of the Obama agenda… else, we may lose yet another generation to another total lie about the success of massive government programs in stimulating economic growth and improving our lives.

I am finding, yet again, the establishment Repubs in Washington to be craven, calculating, and cowardly. Rush, in addition to calling it like it is, has done a wonderful job forcing these establishment Repubs to choose to fight or choose to surrender.

Sadly, far too many have decided to surrender. Thank God for primaries.

Guess a bigger Bandwagon is in order…. And I’m not speaking to anyone in particular with this comment, just in general….

There have been some around that were of the “Give Obama A Chance” line…. Can’t read their minds, but I will defend them to the point of saying that I do NOT believe it is a question of them wanting him to succeed in/with any Liberal agenda just that we had to allow Obama to show his stripes to the great unwashed since he at times try to sell himself as somewhat Conservative (Tax Cut BS, “return to Responsible Government” lines/lies, reviewing the Budget and cutting out what isn’t effective [we, of course, knew that all he meant by that was what any/every Democrat does - cut Defense], etc)…. We, of course, paid attention to Obama’s PAST and knew exactly how he would be governing, and were willing to stand against it from Day One…

Those who used those lines, again didn’t want any Liberal policies to succeed, just didn’t want the direct (RS: 1/10) I want Obama to Fail (here’s why) direct language that I’d used… They wanted to moderate tone and language so as to not be “shut out” of some lines of communications, and IMO how they saw/see it, and a chance at reaching some folks…. I can understand, to some degree, and respect that, but (as I accused a fellow RedStater [whom I like/respect] to challenge his thinking) I think those doing so were just being dupes…. Now, I have to admit that I should have said “unwilling/unwitting dupes,” so I offer my friend (he knows who he is) an apology for that omission (he knew it wasn’t personal, just an honest question/debate of approach).

Any Republicans and/or Conservatives using the “moderated tones and/or language” will be used just as we’ve seen the MSM do with John McCain for the last dozen years… To take his “willingness to cooperate” as a Hammer to beat other Republicans and Conservatives over the head with as “Obstructionist,” “Uncooperative,” and countless other negative portrayals… We see it, of course, with the 3 Stooges (SnowJob, Spectacle, and TomCollins) on the one side to detract from the FACT that REAL BI-PARTISANSHIP has been on the VOTES/SIDE AGAINST all the Obama/Reid/Pelosi Spending and many of us have been trying to remind anyone/everyone of that – that more Democrats have come “across the aisle” to vote with Republicans against the Porkulus at every turn. The Press ignores the Facts, and reports the 3 Stooges as “Bi-Partisan” spin…. We also see the other side, so it doesn’t matter how we play it (my point, and that of many others), with those against and use the HONEST AND DIRECT TERMINOLOGY of FAIL splattered across the MSM….

Again… Nice to see more finally “getting it” …. Playing nice isn’t going to cut and just plays into the MSM spin …. which they will do regardless with either “we want him to Fail” or “we must give him a chance” stances. We may as well be HONEST and use the direct terminology and bring those willing to “understand” rather than play a game with the MSM that won’t/can’t be won!

    Hogan, great post.

for his CPAC comments. Might I make a suggestion, though, to Rush, who seems to have some contact with our rising stars like Jindal and Palin. Rush, urge these people to start criticizing Obama, loudly, full-throatedly, respectfully, truthfully. Tell then that this is desperately important to do. The truth must be spoken about him, and Republicans of all people shouldn’t be papering over his disastrous and shameful goals and philosophy because we don’t want to rain on the nation’s “feel good” parade for Obama. The more we allow people to “feel good” about Obama, the more disastrous the results of his administration will be. His popularity must be driven down by a constant drumbeat of the truth. That is the job for the people who are our presumed leaders, not uttering false platitudes about how great a moment this is for our nation.

to call in and explain what part of the Obama agenda you want to succeed!!!

That indicates to me that he thinks Cantor wimped out on This Week on ABC.

I expect Cantor to call in and explain himself.

But Rush has again separated himself from the GOP as he has regularly since at least 2006.

Rush is also continuing in the part of his speech that reaches out to the poor and lower income people to show how we CARE about their lot and that is why we favor the policies we do and why for the dems to favor the policies they know are proven failures is a shame and a near crime.

But he needs to call out our elected Republicans outside of DC also. Rush tends to go a little soft on certain people when he likes them (G. W. Bush for instance), and it seems Palin and Jindal. Our rising stars, if they are rising stars, need to take up the mantle too.

  • Mike gamecock DeVine

clearly the DC crowd needs more work. Hell, if the DC guys were carrying half the mantle that Palin, Jindal et al are, then we would have filibuster power at minimum.
