Obama Administration: Veterans, Pro-Lifers, Gun Enthusiasts and Those Skeptical of Washington are “Right Wing Extremists”

In a blatant propaganda effort designed to characterize conservatives as racist, anti-American, dangerous extremists, the Obama Administration is attacking many law abiding citizens – from veterans and pro-lifers to anyone who dares question the wisdom of Washington. For the many Americans increasingly skeptical of an out-of-control federal government that is more interested in international popularity than preservation of liberty – the Department of Homeland Security’s report titled, “Right-wing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment,” is an unfair characterization and is without question a naked, political effort to marginalize those who would question the wisdom of those in Washington.

The details of the report are being covered well. Drudge has linked to the WorldNet Daily story on his home page.
Michelle Malkin has excellent coverage of the story on her home page, as well, including numerous of the troubling excerpts.

Of particular note, however, is a footnote on the first page (a page that notes at the top, by the way, that there is no specific information of domestic “rightwing” organizations currently planning acts of violence…) defining “rightwing extremism:”

* (U) Rightwing extremism in the United States can be broadly divided into those groups, movements, and adherents that are primarily hate-oriented (based on hatred of particular religious, racial or ethnic groups), and those that are mainly antigovernment, rejecting federal authority in favor of state or local authority, or rejecting government authority entirely. It may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration.

Now, setting aside the obvious question of a federal department focusing on supposed “rightwing” extremism as opposed to that of the left wing (see, e.g., the likes of ACORN, William Ayers, gay activists targeting Mormons and others supporting marriage legislation, leftist groups threatening disruption of the “tea parties,” etc…), the paragraph is dripping with the all-too-common false characterization of conservatives as racist and “hate-oriented.”

This is – without doubt – an intentional, willful effort to connect belief in federalism, skepticism of Washington, respect for the role of state and local government, and all other variations of limited government conservatism directly to extremism, to racism, to “hate,” and to generally marginalize conservatives as “right wing” extremists. It is so blatant, that the Obama Administration felt it necessary to distance itself from the report ever-so-slightly by saying the President is not focused on politics.

Consider that the report implicates as extremist or possible extremists the following:
- “Disgruntled” Military Veterans;
- Those who perceived threat from the rise of other countries;
- Gun owners/enthusiasts who are skeptical of judicial and legislative efforts to curtail their Second Amendment rights;
- Pro-life individuals and groups opposed to abortion;
- Individuals in favor of border security and stopping illegal immigration; and
- Those who discuss or believe in “end times” prophecies.

The language in the footnote above is particularly telling – and troubling. Consider the language of the last sentence suggestion that “rightwing extremism” “may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration.” So, that you are particularly focused on one issue important to you is suddenly cause for concern by the federal government. And note that it is individuals AGAINST abortion (not for life) and against immigration (not against ILLEGAL immigration or FOR border security).

But what is particularly galling is the (at least implicit) assertion that anyone who holds the view of rejecting federal authority in favor of state or local authority is an extremist. This is, again, purposeful. It is an effort to suggest that if you believe that authority is better placed – or even more – Constitutionally required to be placed in the state, local government or individual… you are someone the Department of Homeland Security is concerned about.

Well… Let me be perfectly clear when I state emphatically that I do reject much of the authority asserted by the federal government over the people, the states and local governments. I absolutely do believe the federal government has overstepped its bounds, repeatedly and without the Constitutional basis to do so. I do reject the idea that America is better served by centralization of power and authority in Washington as opposed to deference to the states, local governments and the people – and once more, that as a Constitutional matter, whether America is better served or not is not the central question. Whether the authority exists in the first place IS the central question.

This is not extremism as the liberals at DHS and the White House are trying to define it. It may well be extremism relative to the anti-liberty view of the Statist. But if that is the case, then I proudly declare myself an extremist, for as Barry Goldwater said, “extremism in defense of liberty is no vice.”

Of interest from the report:

Saul Obama just laid his game plan our lap.

olsmithie Tuesday, April 14th at 3:30PM EDT (link)

As taught by his icon, he must begin by demonizing anyone who disagrees with his objectives.

In order to achieve his goal of total government control of the country and the people, (AmeriKa), all of the above mentioned, “threats” must be subdued.

This is more of a position paper than any kind of scientifically gathered intelligence. Goebbels would be proud.

Obama seems to be particularly afraid of the veterans. Stalin sent his returning war heroes to Siberia for the same reason after WWII.

There is more intelligence on the Obama crowd in this report than there is on the subject groups or individuals.

But Veterans, and Tea Parties, and No More Spending Protests, Oh my. Anyway the elites aren’t going to be affected by terrorism etc…

I’ll be at Tea Party tomorrow. I’m not violent and I’m not afraid to voice my opinion. If Obama and his minions want to believe I’m a Right Wing Extremist, so be it. And, if they do take my picture, I hope it’s a good one. :-)

Gonna email the DHS a list of my qualifications, complete with a photograph. I’ll save them the trouble and expense of thinking for themselves.

And I’m considering signing my April 15 check to the IRS “Right Wing Extremist”. I bet they can still cash it :)

They are not talking about you they are talking about “extremists.” They are not calling out all conservatives they are calling out these exetreme right wing conservatives. I am against abortion but I am not going to go to an abortion clinic and mow down the workers, doctors and patient there. There has been a rise in the purchase of guns among white supremist groups and that is something that should be a concern for HLS. While I understand the outrage by most conservatives I also understand that there are some valid concerns. We are living in a time of extremists on both sides and until the moderate middle can take control we are headed for even harsher times. People should really sit back and look at what is going on in our country. We need to vote out these extreme “powerful” politicians on both sides and take our country back. We are traveling down a very immoral path that if not addressed by all of us will be the end of the USA as we remember it.

arel, what's offensive is that this administration

is deliberately demonizing all of us who want to stop them from taking us even further to the left than we currently are. They wish to tar everyone who opposes them and that means US. They are labeling US as extremists, not just some fringe White Supremacist groups or neo-Nazis, but those of us who work, raise families, pay taxes and DON’T AGREE WITH THEM.

You don’t agree with them either, from reading your past comments. Does that make you an extremist?

Thanks Janis

Since when does the administration of this nation take the position of officially demonizing a large segment of its population comprising citizens who express legitimate concerns and/or opposing views to that administrations policies?

Do we have any Republican leaders who find this tolerable? If not, they had better address this blatant smear tactic of all the patriotic American citizens who happen not to agree with Obama, et al.

This is an utter outrage.

Seriously look into Saul Alinksy's playbook

and you will see what he is doing now and what he will do next. It is all part of Alinsky Jiu Jitsu.

Of, course to actually enact everything he wants to do to the country he will have to confiscate all the firearms and impose censorship on the media.
All of which have been bandied about by the Demoncrats in congress already.

HR 45 , a firearm registration scheme to turn you into an overnight felon. Registration at all times in history has lead to confiscation. Either you turn in your firearms when they demand them or you become a felon for not registering them, and they wholesale your house and get them (and you!) anyway.

Then, institute what ever name you wish for the fairness doctrine to dry up the dispensing of the truth in the media, and voila! you have the old USSR.

Not meaning to sound down, but rough seas ahead.

Maryland State Police monitored "peace groups" in the recent past and the ACLU and Democrat Congressmen were all over it ...

ddstrain Wednesday, April 15th at 7:50AM EDT (link)

where are they now? Here’s the text of an article from OMBwatch.com on the Maryland police action. DHS was involved there as well. Why are the civil libertarians on the left staying silent?

Maryland State Police Surveillance of Advocacy Groups Exposed

On July 17, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Maryland disclosed documents revealing that state police engaged in covert surveillance of local peace and anti-death penalty groups for over a year during the administration of former Maryland Governor Robert L. Ehrlich (R). In response, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) said he might support a Justice Department investigation into why this surveillance occurred. Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS), chair of the House Homeland Security Committee, wrote to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff requesting a full account of the surveillance actions and further information regarding the funds used.

The ACLU of Maryland was concerned that the Maryland State Police were hiding information on the surveillance of local peace activists. On June 12, it filed a lawsuit against the state police for refusing to disclose records in response to a public information request. Plaintiffs include the American Friends Service Committee, Jonah House, Baltimore Pledge of Resistance, Baltimore Emergency Response Network, and several individuals.

A June ACLU press release states, “Documents disclosed during a prosecution for disorderly conduct and trespass against two individuals arrested at a protest at the National Security Agency (NSA) in October 2003 indicated that a ‘Baltimore Intel Unit’ had been monitoring protestors from these groups as they assembled and traveled to the NSA for a protest in July 2004. In order to discover the identity of this ‘intel unit,’ and why the unit was monitoring their peaceful protest activities, the groups filed requests under the federal Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) with several federal agencies, including the NSA, in August of 2006.”

The press release describes the 43 pages of summaries and computer logs. Maryland State Police’s Homeland Security and Intelligence Division sent agents to infiltrate the Baltimore Pledge of Resistance, a peace group, the Coalition to End the Death Penalty (CEDP), and the Committee to Save Vernon Evans. The surveillance continued even though there were no reports of illegal activity and consistently indicated that no violent protests were being planned. Reports of the surveillance were also sent to at least seven federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies. The press release went on to say, “Agents from the Division monitored private organizing meetings, public forums and events held in several churches, as well as anti-death penalty rallies outside the state’s SuperMax facility in Baltimore and in Lawyer’s Mall in Annapolis.”

The ACLU of Maryland will be filing additional requests under the Maryland Public Information Act. It called on activists across the state to find out if their organizations have been spied on. The ACLU will work with groups that are willing to provide the names of key individuals who could be listed in surveillance records to document the full extent of any surveillance and will ensure that the targets have an opportunity to review the files that relate to them and have those files purged.

The Washington Post reported, “Then-state police superintendent Tim Hutchins acknowledged in an interview yesterday that the surveillance took place on his watch, adding that it was done legally.”

Reaction to news of the surveillance was swift and negative. Hoyer’s statement said, “While it is the job of law enforcement to protect the public and keep the peace, it is difficult to understand how non-violent peace activists and opponents of the death penalty constituted a threat to public safety. We need to understand why the monitoring of these and other citizens took place — and whether any federal funds were used in support of this program.” Thompson said, “The politically motivated surveillance of dissident domestic groups that have neither a link to terrorism nor promote violence is … a deplorable use of taxpayer funds.” In addition, Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley (D) announced an investigation to be led by civil rights attorney Stephen H. Sachs, working with State Attorney General Douglas Gansler and state police chief Col. Terrence Sheridan. The 30-60 day review is aimed at developing new intelligence guidelines.
