Jeff Sessions Deserves Better Than Cheap Shots from Politico

Just when you thought the unprecedented adoration of President Obama and the current Democrats in Congress by the “fiercely independent,” and self-promoted “fourth branch” of government known as the media could not get any worse… along comes Politico.

In what can only be described as a hit piece on a good man - Politico trots out in the opening paragraph of its “introduction piece” on Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions… GUESS what? Go ahead… GUESS… Yep, that he’s racist. Hard to believe, huh?

Let me tell you something. I know Jeff Sessions. I know his staff. I know his family. I have seen him working up close and personally. And he is a decent, honorable, good man - a man of integrity who has raised a wonderful family and devoted his life to public service. And he deserves far better than this kind of cheap shot from an irresponsible, dim-witted and second-rate news publication.

Jeff Sessions is a tireless advocate for the average American - of all colors, shapes and sizes. Unknown to many has been his efforts to narrow or eliminate the disparity in sentencing between crack and powder cocaine. Many prosecutors believe it is unnecessary and ill-based, and Senator Sessions has been an advocate for its change for a long time.

When the average American - of any color, shape and size - was not happy with the prospect of tossing out the rule of law in the context of amnesty for illegal immigrants, Senator Sessions stood firm. He was a one-man wrecking crew standing up against the Bush Administration, Ted Kennedy and John McCain when they were trying to force an amnesty bill down the throats of the American people.

Sessions will make the effort to attend Judiciary hearings and he often does the thankless work of holding up burdensome legislation that will expand government via “hotline” late at night (one of those dirty little secrets of the US Senate). He has been a tireless advocate for conservative jurists and he will do a great job working to show the American people how truly activist and troubling the Obama nominees will be (and they will be TERRIBLE - believing the Constitution to be little more than an advisory play-thing).

But, with respect to Politico, let’s look at his record (from my memory). Sessions was an Eagle Scout, growing up in small-town Alabama. After college and law school, Sessions practiced briefly, and after a short stint as an Assistant United States Attorney, was appointed by President Reagan to the post of US Attorney for the So. Dist of Alabama. In 1986, he was nominated for Federal District Judge. He was blocked by the Senate Judiciary Committee - based on, essentially, two charges: 1) that he had made an off-handed remark about the KKK once, and 2) that he once stated that the ACLU and the NAACP are (or have acted) un-American. After he was handed this set-back, Sessions didn’t whine about unfair treatment - he ran for Attorney General and won the seat of Senator Hefflin, who had voted against his nomination in committee. In 1996, he ran for U.S. Senate and won. Since then, he has been re-elected twice (most recently in 2008).

He suggests that the comment he made about the KKK (a joke about being bad because they use marijuana) was taken out of context. I take him at his word - because I actually know him, and actually know who he is. As for the second charge - again, context matters. But I can tell you one damned thing - the NAACP shoved down the throats of the American people and a totally gutless US Congress in 2006 an unconstitutional forced-gerrymandering bill under the name of re-authorizing the Voting Rights Act. We can only hope that the Supreme Court strikes parts of it down - and in my opinion, the actions of the NAACP were, in fact, un-American in that context, because the ends were political rather than promotion of civil rights. And one needn’t go any farther than the ACLU’s efforts with respect to GITMO detainees to see activity that one can legitimately argue undermines our security as a nation - and thus, could be labeled “un-American.”

In all the time I have seen Jeff Sessions in Judiciary Committee or otherwise, I have hardly seen him mention the mistreatment he received at the hands of the Senate Judiciary Committee. He is a gentleman, and he is above that sort of thing. He does his job for Alabamans and the people of the United States. And some pencil-pushing reporter who wants to pluck low-hanging fruit for the front page of a second-rate rag should not be allowed to go un-challenged. It’s an unfair attack on a good man.

God Bless you, Jeff Sessions, and Godspeed.

He's a conservative, so it's a given that he's a racist.

Let me get this straight…the article basically says he’s bad simply because he’s white and he’s a Southerner and he’s the racist? I thought we were supposed to have gotten over judging people by the color of their skin?

If only we had someone like Robert Byrd instead

Maybe THEN we could hold claim to being the ‘non-racist’ party. :/

Byrd is irrelevant-its 2009 not 1949

prefabsprout Wednesday, May 6th at 2:31PM EDT (link)

If the GOP is to counter the Dems charge (which IS working) that the Republican party has become a regional/Southern white mans party ,then is it playing into their hands to have someone like Sessions be the point man on this? Whoever Obama nominates will get gavel to gavel confirmation TV coverage and Sessions must be very careful to not be seen to be feeding into this storyline.

I strongly disagree

Finrod Wednesday, May 6th at 2:59PM EDT (link)

As long as Robert “Sheets” Byrd is in the Senate with a D after his name, he’s still relevant.

Which is worse, to make a joke about the KKK or to be a Grand Wizard in the KKK? You tell me.

prefabsprout....what is the cut-off for relevancy??

Aaron Gardner Wednesday, May 6th at 3:09PM EDT (link)

Just wondering because Sessions joke about the KKK was from prior to 1986….you know 23 years ago.

So what is the cut-off date on racist behavior no longer being racist?

And as a bonus question is making a joke about the KKK equivalent to actually being a member and leader within the KKK?

You should change your screen name to prefab argument…at least it would be more true to you form.

WHATS THE CUT OFF?

prefabsprout Wednesday, May 6th at 3:34PM EDT (link)

The relevancy is that Byrd will not be the face of any Dem hearing on any nomination. At this point hes just an emeritus member of the Dem caucus with no visible or important role. He is-in every sense of this discussion-irrelevant.

Letting someone named Jefferson Beauregarde Sessions (sounds like the name of a Confedrate general at Antetum) run the GOP opposition to whatever nominee Obama picks is a risky move. If you want to ignore that fact feel free to do so.

So what's the cut-off again...

Aaron Gardner Wednesday, May 6th at 3:41PM EDT (link)

and are making a joke about the KKK and being a member equivalent in your view?

And as far as Sessions middle name goes…how about Barrack Hussein Obama…how’s that sound?

Oh and as a super-delegate Obama found Byrd to be quite relevant.

And I am really impressed with your all caps title…almost made me forget that you didn’t answer either of the questions presented to you….almost.

I could see it if they were a straight-down-the-middle, bi-partisan site. They would actually be filling a niche. But as it is now, there is absolutely no reason for me to go there. I have to wonder how they stay afloat. It can’t be ad revenue.

Pretty new to RedState, and I haven’t posted but a couple of times-I’m more of a “read and learn” type; however, when I read your post, I had to say thank you for standing up for Senator Sessions! I am an Alabamian, and we are not always fond of our politicians here, but one I have been able to get behind and whom I believe to be a good man is Jeff Sessions. When I vote for someone, I like to think they’ll truly represent me and I wasn’t mistaken when I chose to vote for Sen. Sessions-he’s a hard worker and someone who I believe really listens to the people of Alabama. The hit piece by Politico only confirms my good judgment! :) Again, great post!

They're Scared

jimmuy8 Wednesday, May 6th at 4:02PM EDT (link)

If they weren’t, they’d have gone on record.

Tell me how “he’s racist” will convince a populace already well-worried of a filibuster proof Senate that a filibuster proof Senate is a good idea?

And just how is a racism circus in 2009 going to still burn hot in 2010?

Look, they’ve already picked off all the easy seats–there’s no Republicans in blue states that have enough liberal and black voters to be cowed into voting against the incumbent because another member of the party has been accused of being a racist; that calculation has already been built into their previous election.

No, this is about scaring Republicans in Republican states because–even after this last cycle–not one has stood up and dared challenge them when they whip out the racism card.

Any Republican stupid enough to fall for this ought not call themselves a Republican (I’m looking at you Colin Powell/Meghan McCain).

On another note: Read the comments; they have no interest in facts or reality–they’ve taken the hint and run back down Crazy Street. To them, Sessions is a slave-owing, through-and-through racist. Just like all Republicans.

To be fair

lorabush Wednesday, May 6th at 4:06PM EDT (link)

The main issue against Sessions in 1986 was not an off-hand joke about the KKK (though that silly issue was discussed), but was his prosecution of civil rights workers–including an aide to Martin Luther King Jr.– who came to Alabama to register black voters. He pursued the case very aggressively and then it all came apart when he went to trial, because he never had much evidence. He also said in his confirmation hearing that he thought the 1965 Voting Rights Act was intrusive. An argument can be made to support that position, but it’s very easy for that to come across as racist.

Also in his confirmation hearings, he offered as proof that he asn’t racist the fact that he had once shared a hotel room with a black man. Honestly, if you think you deserve brownie points for that…

Senator Sessions is a good man

Brian Darling Wednesday, May 6th at 4:43PM EDT (link)

The Senator from the great state of Alabama will be an excellent ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee. I served as a staffer for the Senate Judiciary Committee for Senator Robert Smith of NH and found Senator Sessions to be a member who had the makings of a great Chairman or Ranking Member. Senator Sessions is a solid conservative who has evidenced a strong foundation in constitutional governance, therefore the left felt the need to launch a personal attack on the good Senator’s name. Roughing up Senator Sessions for statements from over 20 years ago without detailing all of his good work as a United States Senator is the functional equivalent of journalistic malpractice.

This is what is called a "warning shot"; the Politico (like most of the MSM) is acting on orders from the White House.

Martin Knight Wednesday, May 6th at 6:00PM EDT (link)

Jeff Sessions is basically being informed by the Washington Press Corps that if he causes any problems for Barack Obama’s judicial nominees (i.e. asks uncomfortable questions) his name is going to be dragged through the mud.

And it will not just stop with him. They’ll be going after his family too.

You can keep the forms of democracy until you’ve eliminated all opposition, but in the early stage you simply scare anyone in your way by threats and intimidation, as well as making examples of a few key people.

From the casual observer, things look the same as usual, but in reality, it’s one-party supremacy.

Chrysler is the canary in the mine; it Obama and his goons can cow the courts even now, then it’s “Katie bar the door” once his flood of appointments hit the courts, which are our last peaceful bastion against tyranny of an overbearing Congress and President marching in lockstep.

it seems very balanced and refutes all the charges of racism - i don’t understand what the author is talking about.

I can not believe I am even addressing you but...

DONTREADONME Wednesday, May 6th at 9:23PM EDT (link)

from the article
Opening paragraph…

“By elevating Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions to their top spot on the Senate Judiciary Committee, Republicans have selected their chief inquisitor for President Barack Obama’s first Supreme Court nominee: a Southern, white conservative man who has drawn fire for racially insensitive comments in the past.”

Did you notice the call out of a Southern white conservative man? That is loaded with negative connotations, not to me, but for most urban Northerners that would trigger a bias.

Next we have Trent Lott

“Former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-Miss.), who was forced to step down from his post over a racially loaded comment, said the pre-emptive strike against Sessions is unfair and that he should be given a chance to perform as ranking member. Lott added that with so much at stake, no nominee should expect “soft treatment” from the Judiciary Committee.”

Forced to resign over a racially loaded comment? That is a loaded paragraph against Trent Lott’s credibility.

Throughout this article they use quotes to try and balance the conversation but unfortunately the non-quoted sections are indeed loaded with biased and negative word use towards Sessions and the republican comments.

but thanks for doing so

easilyamused65 Wednesday, May 6th at 9:48PM EDT (link)

so you would prefer that they just omit facts that you find objectionable? my point is this - the article presents both sides of the argument and on balance i think paints sessions as the victim of unfair accusation - the best you might hope for from a partisan blog.

I love Senator Sessions, though is he from Alabama, I think he is one of the very few that have the country’s best interest in his heart and votes.
I applaud him and wish he was my senator. Politico is junk, never read it. It probably is one of the lib sites that threw Obama on the public that does not know enough to find out what the candidate will do, just fell in love with idea with hope and change.

It’s been over 100 days, I do not see any change in the politics of DC, most politicians care only about next election, not the great USA.

I believe 95% of the senators, reps, etc, all of them are corrupt, I do not see Jeff Sessions that way at all.
