Will KBH Bow Out For the Good of Texas?

Next Tuesday, Texans will vote in their respective primaries, and all eyes are on the race for the Republican nomination for governor. If no candidate gets 50% of the vote, there will be a run-off between the top two, which will be Governor Perry and Senator Hutchison. Such a run-off will allow Democrat Bill White, who will win the Democrat nomination easily over opponent Farouk Shami, to immediately focus on two things: 1) raising lots of money and, 2) firing shots at Perry, whom White believes will win, while the Governor spends money in a slugfest with Hutchison.

In fact, White has already begun focusing almost exclusively on Perry. According to Gromer Jeffers with The Dallas Morning News, White recently urged democrats to “get ready to defeat the forces of darkness,” and then later clarified through his campaign spokesman that he “was NOT referring to ‘his GOP rivals’ in discussing a post-primary scenario. [He] was referring specifically to Governor Rick Perry, who by all accounts is expected to win the Republican nomination after a difficult primary.”

White’s spokesman then seemed to suggest that Hutchison is more aligned with the Democrat candidate than she is with Governor Perry, saying, “[o]n many occasions Bill has openly said he agrees with Senator Hutchison on her criticisms of Governor Perry, from TexDot, to toll-roads and cronyism. He has also worked closely and effectively with many Republicans including Senator Hutchison.”

To be sure, if Rick Perry does not achieve 50% next Tuesday because wrong-headed Texans vote for a 9/11-truther in Debra Medina (for you nay-sayers, see here), it will embolden Hutchison and prompt 6 additional weeks of campaigning.

But the reality is that Hutchison’s Washington-insider status does not resonate in Texas. She badly underestimated the backlash against her and all those associated with Washington spending and largesse, and as noted by a post by Chris Cilliza at The Fix titled, “What Happened to Kay Bailey Hutchison?”, she cannot even clearly explain why she’s running. And even the Senator herself admits that the stigma of being associated with Washington has negatively influenced voters.

The result is a lagging campaign, leaving her behind in the polls and with dwindling enthusiasm and support on the road.

Senator Hutchison has served Texas for most of her adult life, and I believe she has done so in good faith and because she loves the State. But it’s not enough for her to believe “it’s her turn.” If the Senator does not close the ever-widening gap in the polls and Perry falls just short of 50%, the Senator should nevertheless step aside from the race for Governor, step down from the Senate, as she has repeatedly promised to do thereby making way for a new conservative such as Michael Williams, and retire having served the nation and Texas to the best of her ability. It’s the right thing to do.

until the 9/11 stuff came out. Now I’ll vote for Perry. KBH is running a horrible campaign and is actually helping White with her stupid ads.

Dream scenario is Perry getting over 50% and KBH resigning with Williams taking her place.

    • JadedByPolitics

with Perry because I would like all of the money to be spent kicking the CRAP out of the Democrats NOT each other. I also want KBH to settle into retirement so that my FAVORITE candidate for Senator Michael Williams won’t have to embarrass her for LYING about giving up her seat. KBH may once have served for the good of Texas but like all of those who have been around for too long it is obvious that she is all about DC & herself at this time.

are the die hard Paultards. She lost any credibility she had with her Glenn Beck interview and then her constant backtracking afterwards. All of her ads are pathetic and seem to have been produced by high school students. I don’t think she is now going to be able to pull enough votes to cause a runoff.

Trying to be someone that completely outside of elected office and running for governor. Texans haven’t voted a populist since WL “Pappy” O’Daniel back in the 1930′s. What make Ms. Medina think that we are going to vote her in? I think the worse part she had going was that she was from RP home base and never shurged that. As Bill White, I’m sure the finances in Houston during his tenure as Mayor and Annise Parker tenure as Controller is going to hurt him. It would be easier for Phil Hardburger to run than Bill White.

          • Jonbontx

time living down his time as Mayor of Houston. Perry is going to hit him on fiscial irresponsiblity, soft on crime, sanctuary city, tax and spend. Also, White being a Dem is not going to help him in Texas this year.

  • conservative_faction

and I think it is because, just as you stated, she truly believes that it is her turn. But I wonder if she really understands the damage that her sense of gubernatorial entitlement can cause. Surely she must.

  • KathW

Get out of the way and let a good man in.

  • irishgirl

I agree with everything you said hogan. I’ve already voted. I’m just hoping and praying the true conservatives will do what’s needed. Medina seemed interesting at first, but even without the 9/11 nonsense, she just didn’t seem to have enough experience, etc. for the job. It really angers me that KBH has truly done extensive damage already by making the Democrats job alot easier. And it will be interesting to see if she really does step down from the Senate; and if she does, go Williams!

  • KeepOhioRed

If KBH steps down as she promised, is it a safe bet that Perry will do so? And then when would Williams be up for reelection? I want Williams in that seat!

    • Jonbontx

term which is up in 2012. I think that Perry would be foolish not to appoint Williams, as that would strengthen Perry’s credibility with conservatives. If appointed Williams would have no problems being reelected in 2012.

    • Richard Mullins

The other Republicans(Victor Carrillo, Elizebeth Ames-Jones and David Dewhurst) are either running for reelection or seeking another office. When talk was that she was going to resign, Elizebeth Ames-Jones had the most money followed by Micheal Williams.

running for Pres. or VP in 2012, I think he will appoint Williams. Michael Williams is the best choice, but Perry will pick him because he is the favorite of the national conservative base. Unfortunately, after Kay has a horrible showing next week, she will decide not to leave the Senate.

    • Menlo

He hopes she will stay in the Senate.

  • jano4

I don’t think KBH will bow out if there is a run off. Medina had a shot till the whole 9/11 statement, but really I believe she was only in it, to make the Republicans here stay true to conservatism. Perry and KBH, IMO, are both RINO’s. Perry not as much as Kay. Personally I can’t stand Perry, and I will give you pretty good odds that if KBH does resign, he will NOT appoint Michael Williams. Dewhurst will be his choice. Typical cronyism from Perry.
Recently several of my buddies and I were having a lunch and we concluded that White will probably pull some votes from the KBH side of Rep. primary voters, and the battle between White and Perry is gonna get very ugly with a lot of mud slung in both directions. Lord knows Perry has enough skeletons in his closet as does White.

I”m so very, very tired of hearing the KBH radio ads that I couldn’t possibly relate it in writing. The negative ads against Perry are simply sorry, and her positive ad about fiscal responsibility is ludicrous – the best she can do, in a Senate career starting in 93, is to talk about voting in the past 13 months! Mark Davis just reported two polls, one had Perry at 40%, Kay at 30 something and Medina under 16%. The Rasmussen poll Mark reported as Perry at 48%, Kay under 30% and Medina at 16%. Mark believes the Medina voters will not vote for Kay under any circumstance, but won’t vote for anyone but Medina unless Medina isn’t in the race.

Perry isn’t perfect. I’ve convinced Mark Davis, on a rational basis and without any reference to former aides roles, Perry shouldn’t have used an Executive Order for the HPV immunization program (which is no longer operative). And the Trans Texas Corridor was a gross mistake, though I have no idea who convinced him to back it. Regarding toll roads, I personally prefer major roads be paid for by tolls. If I want to use the road, I pay for it and my neighbors. who don’t use the road, don’t pay for it. I have no problem with toll road contracts going to the lowest qualified bidder. If the people want to have a company pay the entire expense of building the road, build the road, and be responsible for maintaining the road, then I have no problem with that company retaining the tolls from the road. A caller to Mark Davis’ show Monday stated that he’d rather have the taxpayer’s lay out the money once so their descendants won’t have to pay. I understand the wish, but it is wishful thinking that, once the initial cost of the road is paid for, there will be no further expense to the taxpayers.

I’d like to see Kay pull out of the race. I don’t think either Kay, or Medina, will do so. If they have the ego to run, they have too much ego to pull out.

until the election is safely over. Then she can resign if she wishes so that the gov. can appoint a replacement instead of an election.

I disagree however with your person to replace her. If someone runs in a special election, or gets appointed it should te Texas state senator Dan Patrick! A true christian conservative with a love for Texas and the constitution at the fore of his decision making.

    • graciegirl

entered the race in order to gain name recognition on the Repubican’s dime to run for the supposed Senate vacancy. Medina has stated she will NOT support the eventual Republican nominee! Dan feels she should have therefore run as a Libertarian.

If Williams is the man for now so be it. But there is no person finer, more conservative or honorable than Dan Patrick. It would be a gift to have him in Washington!

      • Menlo

I think he is more needed in Austin than in Washington.

        • Richard Mullins

and it’s not in DC. Austin at this point is needed in all things conservative(financial, social and otherwise). We need to turn surpluses in more small businesses that can create more jobs statewide.

  • AceInTX

I can’t think of a dumber play than the one she’s made…and she’s compounded her stupidity with every move.

She never had a chance at the Governors Mansion especially after she had signaled she would run for governor two times before and chickened out after getting the hole party shuffling around to fill the vacancies he leaving the Senate would cause.

Then she doubles down with her stupidity by declaring she would resign her Senate seat…

The only thing she could possibly do that would be dumber than that is to declare she wouldn’t resign till after the primary…ohh…wait…SHE DID!

Now she’s out on the limb…having sawed half way through it herself and no way to get back while having any credibility left. There are no good options for her…she’ll lose the run off if she stays to run against Perry….she’ll prove herself to be an opportunistic, Cynical political hack if she decides to stay in the Senate after promising to resign…

I can’t believe the utter lack of tactical or strategic thinking on her part in all this…she didn’t leave herself a way to retreat with dignity after taking on a lost cause.

Who knows what she was thinking…but this has destroyed her….she’s a joke now…KBH will forever more be a punchline!

    I’m still betting she won’t resign…and she’ll run for reelection in 2012,,,

but I know Kay won’t be able to pull this off. I feel like I’m stuck now. Kay is very popular in the rural areas of Texas and Perry is carrying the cities, aka those areas where residents weren’t going to have their land taken by Perry for the use by the Trans Texas Corridor.

That TTC contract with Cinta-Zachary is still valid and my land sits right in its path. It’s sad, it’s frustrating, and Kay has done a HORRIBLE job of reminding people about it. The TTC and HPV are the two biggest issues that turn people off to Perry and other than a few mentions about them in ads, she is mostly focusing on cronyism and gaining the support of most major Texas newspapers (which are all liberal rags IMO).

      • AceInTX

I had forgotten about the Vaccine thing till Neil mentioned it the other day…and he’s been less than perfect on boarder issues…but on everything else he’s been solid…and Kay has proven herself to not be ready for prime time…Medina is a tin foil hat clown…so what else are you going to do?

For what it’s worth…one doesn’t have to have land along the TTC to be opposed to it…and I think it’;s dead….there was alot of money to be made if it ever went through which I suspect will keep it coming back from time to time…but I don’t think it will pass…there are too many of us watching
