One Network, Under Secular Elitism

* UPDATE, NBC “Apologizes” (Fairly pathetic one I might add – notice what is missing from the “apology?”): The NBC crew (I believe it was Dan Hicks) just announced that “We began our coverage of this final round just about 3 hours ago, and when we did, it was our intent to begin the coverage of this U.S. Open Championship with a feature that captured the patriotism of our national championship being held in our nation’s capital for the third time – regrettably a portion of the Pledge of Allegiance that was in that feature was edited out. It was not done to upset anyone. And, we would like to apologize to those of you who were offended by it.”

*******

Just as I thought that the primary reason a father who loves golf as much I do would have to boycott NBC Sports and it’s recently acquired Golf Channel is the inundation of frigging Viagra (and similar) commercials, the geniuses at NBC decided to use their considerable wisdom and virtue to edit the Pledge of Allegiance for the rest of us, for they consider us dupes.

This morning, before the final round of the United States Open – a Father’s Day tradition for golfers in this country and beyond, and arguably the most grueling test of golf in the world – NBC produced one of those little lead-in montages… You see, the Open is being played at historic Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland, right outside of Washington, DC, and the montage was a little patriotic deal showing pictures along with clips of kids reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Only – the fine producers at NBC decided that it would be much better for the viewers not to be subjected to the phrase “under God,” not once – but twice.

This, of course, is not all that surprising – but then it happens. And we just let it happen. You see, the network is right that we are dupes, but not for the reasons they think – that is, that we are backwards, hayseed, Bible-thumpers in flyover country. Rather, we are dupes because we just keep watching and keep letting it happen. We want to watch sports, so we just gather ’round the TV for the latest erectile dysfunction commercial or teenage-targeted, sexed-up “Axe” commercial. We wait for the creative geniuses on Madison Ave. to give us another Go-Daddy clip while we bow-down to pink-clad athletes on the field promoting Susan Komen (and the money the organization gives to Planned Parenthood), all while watching the “green” broadcast from NBC where they praise each other for being planet friendly – no doubt having eschewed the limo for the Prius en route to the studio.

Just like the countless other things we do every day endorsing, either overtly or silently, the downgrade of God, marriage and most things virtuous – we just keep on watching.

I wish I thought there would be a “fix” beyond DVR. But then, that’s not really my point. My point is that the secular elitists continue to own it all and to push their view of the world into every aspect of our lives while we are forced to retreat to the corners of our churches and houses and pretend we are not supporting this nonsense when we watch and when we buy the products of the advertisers.

Oh – and Rory just birdied the first hole to go to minus 15… just in case you wondered how my glass house is doing…

Not necessarily to get all worked up about, just to make a note of it and remember.

I watch very little entertainment TV these days; almost none, in fact. It’s real easy for me to be picky about which networks to watch if I choose to sample a new series.

    • mirac777

doesn’t get worked up about the editing of the pledge of allegiance to omit under God, and other all-important unifying sentences in it, they have deep-seated Liberal tendacies somehwere in their head or ideology that , IMO, makes them either anti-American at heart, or too ignorant to be allowed to vote and live in this country.

This is the creeping enabler of the intended collapse of American traditions and family values. We were born a Christian nation, and all the Christianity bashing and trashing is a direct threat to our nation today. Look at the lack of morals and personal responsibility in America today. Our society is being broken down and stomped into a perverse, common beggar mentality where everyone thinks they have the right to things without working for them.

But lets not get worked up about it, because we can all just stand in bread lines in the end, if big daddy Socialism has anything left to hand out!

      • Flagstaff

and just say that enough people got worked up enough that NBC noticed, and that was good. I’m sure that means they’ve changed their ways and we can go back to watching their programming.

      • liberteaparty

The United States didn’t even have a “Pledge of Allegiance” for its first 100 years or so. It wasn’t until the 1890′s that the pledge was written and adopted and it wasn’t until the 1950s that Congress added the words “under God.”

For a bunch of folks that supposedly want less federal government in their lives, I’m always surprised that y’all are so quick to defend the federal government passing a law recommending that its citizens pledge allegiance.

You messed up. What’s this “y’all” bit if you’re supposed to be one of us?

Feel free to request reinstatement at the contact page if you’re ready to stop with the pointy sticks and be forthright about your purpose here.

  • RichmondG30

In one of the season’s final episodes, one of the characters (Oscar) omitted “under God”. It was clearly deliberate as the camera cut to him just before the line. This is the only show I watch on NBC but maybe I ought to just turn off this network completely.

    • jeffreywturner

But I actually took it as a positive for the following reason:

Although NBC probably didn’t mean it to do this, it demonstrated the reason why the secular progressives are wrong on this issue. If you noticed, everyone else said “Under God”, but Oscar simply paused during that part and took a breath while the others said those two words. You see – if you don’t want to say it, you don’t have to say it. No one is forcing you to say it. Just because you don’t want to say it, doesn’t mean you have to bring a lawsuit to prevent others from saying it, and this episode clearly demonstrated this simple concept.

That is preposterous, period! Wake up.

        • jeffreywturner

that they didn’t mean to demonstrate why secular progressives are wrong on this issue.

I know they meant o show Oscar abstaining from saying “Under God”.

  • jeffreywturner

But it is golf after all – and no one really cares or watches when Tiger Woods isn’t participating or doing well. It’s kinda like baseball when the Yankees aren’t in it. Did you see the ratings for the World Series last year? Abysmal.

Many years ago, in fact, when our son was born. I keep wondering how I had the time to just sit there watching TV every day. I haven’t missed it, I don’t get cranky watching things I’d rather not see shoved in front of me, and I don’t support any of them (except that all Internet/phone bundles assume you’ll be watching cable, too). Instead, we do things and talk to each other.

NBC must have received a ton of complaint calls.

      I just added this update:

UPDATE (Fairly pathetic one I might add): The NBC crew (I believe it was Dan Hicks) just announced that “We began our coverage of this final round just about 3 hours ago, and when we did, it was our intent to begin the coverage of this U.S. Open Championship with a feature that captured the patriotism of our national championship being held in our nation’s capital for the third time – regrettably a portion of the Pledge of Allegiance that was in that feature was edited out. • gekster

        Offending Christians is ok.
Christians don’t have a tendancy to blow you up when offended.
        Christians tend to forgive.

        • Tbone

Once you accept that liberals have no core moral values, everything they do makes sense.

      • The_Gadfly

even more offensive than the original edit.

carries the weight and sincerity of a grain of sand in the desert.

I have found that the simplest solution to the offensive nature of television today (ads, politically correct content, etc.) is to shut it off. My childhood and early adulthood memories are filled with television shows I watched. Also, I watched sports religiously. In fact, there was at least a decade during which I sat each year and watched most of March Madness, every game in the last two rounds of playoffs in the NBA, the entire World Series, the televised portions of the major events in tennis and golf, the Stanley Cup finals, the NFL playoffs, and all the major College football bowls, with a bunch of college baseball thrown in if I could get it. Nonetheless, about 10 years ago I stopped watching shows on TV and about 3 years ago, I simply stopped watching sports (though, I have to admit to having watched at least 2 football games and a basketball game in the last year). Frankly, I have not missed either the so-called entertainment or the sports at all. I have had more time to spend with my kids. I have not had to figure out how to protect them from the vulgarity of the ads. The three events I have watched this year were enough to show me that things just keep getting worse.

Until I see some compelling evidence that there is anything at all worth watching on television, and especially that the ads contain images and words that I would permit my children to use, let alone see and hear, I will not be coming back. Yes, I sometimes have fond memories of watching great sports events of the past, but the cost (too my children) of watching is simply too high for my blood.

this country was founded on the principles of religious freedom and unless spirituallity has a comback we will be studied the way scholars study the romans

liberals i guess are athiests and therefor are not bound by the principals of the counstitution that are founded on the belief of god

    • davesinsanantonio

referred to as “me”. And they will allow “no other gods before “me”". So, since we wish to worship a different God, they edit Him out.
Of course, someday they will realize they are not god, but for them it will be too late. The question is will it be too late for us also?!

  • swvapatriot

The day will come when conservatives will own newspapers and television news organizations, providing the other side, and admitting their bias. This is Andrew Brietbart’s dream too.

Maybe even the sports & entertainment side as well.

  • http://www4.webng.com/rickbull/lostlucky/ rickbull

The man ended every broadcast with the same words:

“Good night, and may God bless.”

    • gekster

      I miss him too.
      Never a bleep.
Never a “close your eyes kids”
And sorry to say, in this day and age, never a chance.

        God Bless You Red.
Tou are one person I can’t wait to see again.

Since I am from a different generation I would probably have never seen this clip and that would have been truly regrettable.

I regret that we will probably never see its like again.

May God bless Red Skelton. I, too, look forward to seeing him again.

generations a peek at the wonderful world we were privileged to inhabit during our formative years.

I realize ‘from this side of the coin’ they can’t understand how we were so innocent and believed that good would triumph over evil, but at least this will give them a few minutes to experience the wonder of the years gone by that they often hear us talk about.

And who knows, maybe there will be a few who will say to their parents or grandparents after watching this gentleman explain patriotism that they now understand what we’ve been trying to tell them ;-)

Now…do you suppose we will ever hear “Good Night and God Bless” come from any of today’s so-called comedians?

  • ss396

A couple commentators above made the recommendation simply to turn the TV off. I did that 45 years ago as a teenager, when I found TV tiresome and the ads inane beyond bearing. So I have seen little TV since, and the only down side that I have so far discovered is that I’m simply awful at things such as the Trivial Pursuit entertainment category.

But turning it off is a problem. By doing so, I don’t see these intrusions of cultural bias, and I know nothing of the pervasive undermining of conservative values that are propagated. I only read about them on the blogs – indeed, that’s how I even know that this subversion is occurring. I don’t feel the forces that TV marshals against these values, against religion, against traditional marriage, against respect and good citizenry. I don’t see the substitutions of cattiness vs. discussion, of self-gratification vs. self-control, and how gratuitous homosexual scenes have taken the place of the former gratuitous sex scenes in so many productions.

How to contribute to fight this enemy of whose existence I am barely aware? My boycott of the genre is long-established – and seemingly ineffectual, although I can cheer at the declining viewership numbers.

On the up-side, I note that, when TV-based topics arise in conversation, I tell folks that “I’m not a TV-watcher at all.” Most of them immediately protest that they don’t watch much TV either. I suspect that their protest is of something less than whole cloth. Still, that they feel a need to denigrate TV watching is perhaps indicative of a growing backlash against its absurdities?

…featured a child with two daddies. That’s when we shut the TV off.

I haven’t been to the movie theater since 2000 because I won’t give my money to the Hollywood left. I won’t buy Heinz products. I won’t buy Starbucks. When a country radio station plays anything with Natalie Maines (Dixie Chicks) in it, I call to complain and threaten to stop listening. I won’t use the Google search engine. I won’t own anything Apple. I won’t own GM. I won’t watch the big 3 evening news networks or PBS.

I know I can’t completely omit left-leaning businesses out of my life but I really try. And I may not be able to make a big difference, but I’m holding my own little boycott at every opportunity and I tell everyone I know.

In addition to doing anything I can to promote conservatism, I do all I can to keep what little cash I have left after the federal government gets their piece, out of the hands of businesses who are doing everything they can to destroy it. And you should too. Money (or lack of) talks.

    • sccrenny

A tactic which COULD be very effective if every conservative would adopt it. No Homo Depot for me. No AARP membership. When my local news is over the network news goes off. No GM or Chrysler in my driveway. No GE appliances in my house. I cancelled my subscription to my New York Times-owned local paper when the Times published details of the Bush administrations anti-terror tactics.

I suspect that the overwhelming majority of USGA members ( like myself)are really mad/upset about this. Forget about writing to NBC..write/emailo/call the USGA..tell them in no uncertain terms that you expect that theyt will may it crystal clear to NBC that this crap better stop..

    • usadying

USGA sponsors the women’s and men’s opens plus the amateur opens. PGA sponsors most tournaments.

  • aesthete

but if one is going to say it, it is silly to leave off a part of it simply because it mentions God. Whether one believes in God or not, one can grin and simply accept that the words are acknowledgement of the beliefs of those who created the pledge.

    • http://christopherrenner.blogspot.com Christopher Renner

I’ve disliked the Pledge ever since reading “Liberal Fascism”, and stay silent when others are reciting it. It’s a lot easier than trying to make God an”unperson” by surreptitiously altering the words.

late one night during the first few days of Gulf War One. I turned to my wife and said, “Now what?” She showed me what and we never did replace the tv.

A TV Movie about the homefront in WWII (Lifetime Television?) where they had the kids doing to the Pledge of Allegiance and they *included* the “under God” phrase not realizing that before 1954 it wasn’t there.

  • lakecrazy

is God-less and Sorry. Enough said.

  • capeconservative

things would begin to change…guess I was WRONG!

  • soljerblue

in both its original form, and with “under God” added in 1954, is meant to show allegiance to the IDEAL of the American republic — one nation (under God whether you agree or not) — with liberty and justice for all. Any thinking person knows the reality reflects anything but. Does that mean you dump the IDEAL, and just accept the crapola? Sorry, y’all. I can’t do that. Never will. I speak the words when the occasion arises loud and clear, as an understanding of what was intended and a prayer that it can one day become what it was meant to be.
