In New York 23, some unexpected backers: Part 4 Sarah Palin

Cross posted at Freedom Defended

As I continue the observations about what happened in NY-23 from my boots on ground perspective, I am now going to do one that is a little different.

Sarah!! was catapulted to national prominence when she was picked as John McCain’s running mate. The right instantly fell in love and the left was immediately driven to irrational hate. The left (and some in the GOP leadership) hates Governor Palin for the same reason the right loves her: she is not a member of the elite ruling class. She is similar to Fred!! In many ways; a simple American perspective, an ability to clearly articulate her conservative views, and a natural connection with the average joe. On the other hand, she is more of a populist than an intellectual. She has a keen political mind, but sometimes fails to have the depth behind her arguments that someone like Senator Thompson does. That said, she still compares favorably with intellectual “heavyweights” of the other side such as President Obama and Vice President Biden.

NY-23 would not have been on the map without Fred Thompson, but it would not have received the wide ranging Republican support without Sarah Palin. After Sarah Palin endorsed Doug Hoffman, his campaign received $116,000 in contributions in one day. One of the campaign staffers, who stated that he was not real fond of Sarah Palin, said that the money and phone calls that came in immediately after her Facebook posting was unreal. Erick Erickson here at Redstate took the opportunity to make his headline Palin Wins. Pawlenty Fails. Within days, Tim Pawlenty had thrown his support behind Doug Hoffman, with a stampede of Republicans charging in as well. Whatever a person may think about Sarah, I can think of no other person right (or left) of center with that kind of influence. Sarah Palin is as responsible as anyone else for Doug Hoffman moving from 16% in the polls to 45% on the ballot in three weeks.

I wish I could end the story there, and leave you all with good thoughts about Sarah, but I have to address some negatives to the story. First, Sarah really was a Johnny-come-lately to the NY-23 race. The battle lines had been drawn and the skirmish had begun before she took the field. Understandable, but she gets far too much credit for her decision as if it was a bold move. Her influence was good, game changing even, but she would deserve the accolades much more if she been on the scene earlier.

Secondly, Sarah Palin and many of the other pro-Hoffman groups were probably tactically responsible for Doug’s loss even as they were strategically responsible for his surge. At the end of the campaign, when Scozzafava dropped out and endorsed Bill Owens, Joe Biden and others were able to use Sarah Palin and others as a club to beat Hoffman with. It worked, with late deciders going to Owens. Many of the campaign people on the ground were happy with the money and support brought in by Sarah, but they were also very concerned what her polarizing stature would do. In a district such as NY-23, the general populace does not like Sarah Palin, even if it is because all they know is what the leftist media has told them. If the election had been two days earlier or two days later I am convinced Doug Hoffman would have emerged the victor. More on that in another post.

There is no easy answer on this subject. Sarah Palin has a deep and wide love amongst conservatives, and among a certain set of independents, but the hate from the left and the perception by many moderates is a serious drawback. I am a Palin supporter, and I would be infinitely happy to see her as our next POTUS, but I am starting to question whether nominating her would be wise. With her political talent, she might be able to overcome the perception, and 2012 is a long ways off. I think, as with Fred Thompson, it may be that the best we can hope for from Sarah is destroying the President’s agenda with Facebook posts and launching conservative candidates into the spotlight. If that is the case, it is still a positive for us to have Sarah Palin out there. We just need to be careful how tightly she is connected to campaigns in less than conservative areas.

Unfair, Mac.

On the scene earlier? She’s not omniscient.

I think you’re letting perfect be the enemy of great.

You’re starting to question whether nominating her would be wise? That’s the game that ends with us picking John McCain.

Or Dede Scozzafava.

Wrong on both counts

1. I am not criticizing here for when she got in, only noting that the amount of credit she got for getting involved is excessive when others were there first.

2. It’s the kind of game that ends with us picking a different conservative. It is not her conservatism that is the problem, it is her high negatives. Before she would be a workable nominee, those would have to be overcome.

I agonized over writing this post, because I am and always have been a strong Sarah supporter. The reality on the ground in NY-23 has not changed my support for here, simply made me question whether she is the right person for the job.

You are overthinking it, Mac.

1. So what if others were there first? We are each responsible for our own actions. Saying others were there first implies that she should have been, and was therefore actiing opportunistically, even cynically. But more importantly, you are reducing several factors down to one, timing. There is geography, party loyalty, the notoriety of the endorser, the male-female thing, 2012 viability, and a lot of other stuff. So when she endorsed is not as important as that she endorsed at all.

2. You are announcing who can win, and using that to shut down argument.

I've never experienced this before

You are so enamored with this particular person that you will twist and turn my comments, simply because I didn’t write a glowing love fest about her.

1. Are you trying very hard to misread? It is very simple. She received a lot more credit on the TIMING of her endorsement than I feel she should have.

2. I didn’t announce ANYTHING. I simply pointed out that for the first time I have DOUBTS about her. The whole point is to get people talking about it - I am the last one to shut down argument.

What is it about Sarah Palin that makes those on both the left and the right descend into irrationality? It’s an important question, because it is exactly what needs to be dealt with BEFORE she is put on the ballot.

For the record, I'm not enamored of anyone.

And that is all I have to say about it.

The next R nominee for president

cwilson Saturday, November 7th at 2:50AM EST (link)

will be vilified, hated, and lied about. The nominee’s family will be attacked and their children will be stalked on the way to and from school. Every second of the candidate’s past will be scrutinized; reporters will rummage through literal garbage, looking for unpaid visa bills. They will scour court records, looking for traffic tickets — or if they are supremely lucky, 20 year old DUI convictions.

That’s just what the leftist press and the Democrats (but I repeat myself) DO to Republican candidates in the age of Bush Derangement and ObamaWorship. And in the course of doing that, the nominee’s standing with moderates will be shaky. Independents will be leery. RINOs will insist that if we had only nominated one of THEM, then this would never have happened — and Democrats will be in frothing, red-rimmed rage-filled paroxysms of hatred at the sheer affront that one of THOSE PEOPLE would dare challenge Teh Won.

Can you think of someone to whom all of the preceeding has already been done, and who is still standing — STILL refusing to kowtow to the Leftist Grandees of the New York Times, refusing to beg for THIER respect, but instead standing strong and earning OURS?

Me too.

Now, I’m not yet sold on Sarah!! for 2012. But neither do I dismiss her out of hand. Rush is right: the leftoids will tell us — ARE telling us — who they fear the most, and right now that’s Sarah!! The 2012 campaign is still a long ways away, and a lot will happen between now and then.

If you think I was dismissing here out of hand

You are reading way too much into what I said.

Well, then, there's little left to pick apart in Palin.

Steph C Saturday, November 7th at 7:52AM EST (link)

And she’s still standing. I can’t imagine going through what she has gone through and coming out of it in the way she has.

Exactly cwilson

Scope Saturday, November 7th at 9:47AM EST (link)

The left tells us who they most fear. The leftist media also did the same thing to Fred Dalton Thompson, except to a lesser degree. When Fred was riding high in all the polling, before he even got in the race, the Libs and the media were very afriad that he just might be the next coming of Ronald Reagan. Again, just as Fred said, they build you way up, just to have that much farther to take you down. That was even before the current exagerated alligence and love affair they are now having with Obama.

Not only have the Libs told us how afraid they are of Palin, but, the old guard Repubs, McCain et al, have also told us who they fear most. That can not be intrepreted as a negavtive against Palin, especially when a majority of Independents are swinging back to the Republican side. Also, with the fact that 40% now consider themselves Conservatives, not Republicans. Many of those Independents were former Republicans, who became less than enamoured with the big spending, big government Republicans, who are still the same ones trying to control the party. They are the Republican anti-Palinistas. No matter how hard the R’s are trying to jump on the Liberal bandwagon of Palin hatred/envy, she is the one coming out on the right side of what the American population is clamouring for. And, as someone said above, many of those that think they are anti-Palin have probably not bothered to find out anything more about her than what they were told by CNN, MSNBC and the SNL look alike. To this day there are still some who believe that Palin actually was the one who said she could see Russia from her porch. And, I also agree that no matter who it is that may look promising for the Repubs in 2012, they also will in fact go through the same trashing that Palin has endured. There is a whole lot of time until the 2012 primaries, and, Palin will either rise, or she will fall, all of her own making. One day in politics is an eternity. I am withholding judgement of her, or her chances, until then. She may not have any desire to even get into the race.

Finally, Hooah, I’m not sure of what you meant by saying that she is as intelligent as Obama and Biden. There are not many here, or anywhere for that matter, that don’t believe that the pres. and the veep are not total incompetent idiots. Couldn’t you have found someone else to compare her intelligence to. Good Lord, even Mickey Mouse is smarter than that duo.

I compared her with Fred!! first

Hooah_Mac Saturday, November 7th at 1:17PM EST (link)

And very few mortals could come out favorably in that match up, so I pointed out that even if she wasn’t as intellectually deep as Fred she still looks good next to Obama and Biden. You misquoted me big time.

The problem for Sarah is that she is seen negatively, and it will take time and effort to undo that. Especially because the negatives have “set” in the minds of many. Since the leftist media has been referring to her negatively for so long without answer or explanation, the average person just “knows” it is true. That is a lot harder to reverse than someone new only having to counter the current criticism.

NY23 will regret their choice.

Steph C Saturday, November 7th at 7:55AM EST (link)

Owens broke 3 or 4 of his campaign promises within an hour of being sworn in. How that will play out in 2010 is something to think about.

I am sold

Palin received the most vicious smears from the liberal media for one reason, she was the biggest threat to their socialist agenda. If they had been more afraid of Fred Thompson, then he would currently be the boogieman that the RINOs are telling us we cannot nominate and expect to win.

Sarah is every bit as intelligent and worldly as Obama. She just doesn’t have the BS veneer to go along with it that one seems to get from a liberal Ivy League college, and they try to pass off as intelligence.

“Sarah is every bit as intelligent and worldly as Obama” — was that an unintended insult? :)

You got me

regent2009 Saturday, November 7th at 10:43AM EST (link)

I should have said that Sarah does not fall for every over thought policy fad or academic idea of no practical use. She is therefore far more intelligent than Barack Obama.

The lie that Sarah Palin is a right-wing extremist needs to be debunked

David123 Sunday, November 8th at 10:06PM EST (link)

Sarah Palin’s positions are normal mainstream positions on the issues. Some people may disagree with her on some positions which is fine, but calling her extreme is a lie. Compare Sarah Palin and JFK - overall their positions are fairly similar, and on some issues Sarah Palin is more liberal than JFK.

If the leftists get to paint Sarah Palin as an extremist, they’ll do the same thing to anybody else the Republican party might nominate.

David123

I totally agree with that about Sarah

Hooah_Mac Sunday, November 8th at 10:32PM EST (link)

My concern is that the negative impression has set in public opinion and for her to run, we will have to counter the existing impression as well as fresh attacks. As I said, Sarah has a keen political talent and 2012 is still a ways off. It remains to be seen how things will shake out.
