Guess Which Nevada Senator is Less Popular than John Ensign

Got it on the first try, huh?

While Senator Ensign’s sudden fall in the polls has gotten the headlines, Harry Reid is even more unpopular. And while Ensign next seeks reelection in 2012, Harry Reid is up next year:

At 39 percent, Ensign’s diminished favorable rating is slightly higher than that of the state’s senior senator, Majority Leader Harry Reid (34 percent), and far above that of the dismally unpopular Gov. Jim Gibbons (10 percent).

“That sure says something, that the guy involved in the adultery scandal is the most popular senior elected official in the state,” Sabato said. “I don’t know what it says, but it says something.”

Now if only the Nevada GOP could find a credible challenger…

Latest Pennsylvania Poll: Should Specter Switch Back?

Most Democrats Favor a Primary; Specter and Toomey in Near Dead Heat

When the Democrat leaders in Washington were negotiating Arlen Specter’s party switch, they were eager to assure him that they would do all in their power to ensure him a clear path to the Democratic nomination for Senate. It’s becoming clear that in doing so, they promised something far outside their power to deliver.

In the 2010 race for U.S. Senate, by a 63/28 margin most Democrats believe Specter should face a challenge from one or more other Democrats in the 2010 Democratic primary in order to secure the nomination (9% are undecided). This suggests most Democrats want Specter to earn his rightful place as the Democratic nominee despite comments by Democratic Party officials and leaders that Specter should be given a free ride in the primary.

In a potential general election match-up between Democrat Arlen Specter and Republican Pat Toomey, Specter leads Toomey by a 46/37 margin (13% are undecided and 4% would support someone else). Among Republicans, Toomey leads Specter 69/21 while among Democrats Specter leads Toomey by a 65/14 margin. Among “super voter” or those who voted in 3 or 4 of the last 4 general elections the race is a near toss-up with Specter leading by a narrow 42/39 margin, while among those who voted in only 1 or 2 of the last 4 elections Specter holds a commanding 50/36 lead. This means lower turnout favors the Republican nominee in this contest, while higher turnout favors the Democrat.

CT Dems Encourage Chris Dodd to Quit

The Connecticut State Senate is rushing through legislation to strip (Republican) Governor Jodi Rell of her power to appoint a successor to Senator Chris Dodd, if he should resign his office:

In another controversial bill, the Senate Democrats voted early Friday morning to remove Republican Gov. M. Jodi Rell’s power to appoint a U.S. Senator in case of a vacancy.

Instead, there would be a special election if one of the two U.S. Senators - currently Christopher J. Dodd and Joseph I. Lieberman - stepped down from office before the six-year term ended…

McConnell: Arlen Will be a Good Soldier

Also: No Compromise on Card Check, but YMMV

I’m here at CPAC, where I’ve had the opportunity to meet briefly with Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell to talk over current issues. After a strong speech (which you might ultimately be able to find here), McConnell addressed questions from several bloggers.

To me, the most notable answer from McConnell came in response to a question from Fausta - when she asked his thoughts on Michael Steele’s suggestion that the RNC might not support the re-election of Senators Snowe, Collins and Specter, given their votes for the Obama-Reid-Pelosi Debt Spending Plan. McConnell first threw cold water on the idea - saying that he would support the re-election of his Senate GOP colleagues. Then he predicted that Arlen Specter would be a more dependable vote in the future, saying:

‘Stimulus” Has $8 Billion for Harry Reid’s Re-Election Campaign

How Much Pork Is Hidden in the Details?

How much can you hide in a 1,434 page conference report? Quite a lot. According to Bloomberg, Congressional leaders managed to squeeze in a tax break of ‘up to $10 billion’ that General Motors has been looking for:

GM won a provision that will erase a tax liability of up to $10 billion that would have resulted from restructuring efforts, said Senator Debbie Stabenow, a Michigan Democrat.

The bill also includes $8 billion for Harry Reid’s re-election effort a MagLev train from Southern California to Las Vegas:
