JoAnn Fleming Slams Patrick Over Dewhurst Endorsement

JoAnn Fleming, Chair of the TEA Party Caucus Advisory Committee in Texas has come out swinging on State Senator Dan Patrick over his endorsement of David Dewhurst for US Senator. She made it very clear that Patrick does not speak for the TEA Party Advisory Committee and that she does NOT support David Dewhurst. The following is the press release sent out by Fleming and posted here with her permission.

Chair of the TEA Party Caucus Advisory Committee

Re: Patrick’s Endorsement of Dewhurst

Senator Dan Patrick Does Not Speak for Us!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

July 26, 2012

Contact:  JoAnn Fleming, Chairman, Advisory Committee to the Texas Legislature’s TEA Party
Caucus (903) 894-7204 or (903) 360-2858

JoAnn Fleming, chair of the advisory committee to the Texas Legislature’s TEA Party
Caucus today made it clear that Senator Dan Patrick does not speak for
the TEA Party Caucus Advisory Committee.

Fleming stated, “While Senator Patrick is indeed the founder and leader of the Texas Tea Party Caucus in the Senate, I want to make it very clear, in the strongest terms,  that Senator Patrick in no way speaks for the Advisory Committee to the TEA Party Caucus. The Dewhurst campaign today seizing on Patrick’s endorsement as some kind of TEA Party prize is premature and nothing but desperate spin.”

While I will not speak for individual members of the Advisory Committee, I can assure Senator Patrick that the Advisory Committee is not pleased with the following facts regarding Dewhurst’s track record:

1) On Lt. Governor David Dewhurst’s watch, Texas taxpayers continue to suffer the high cost of illegal aliens to the state of Texas. The red ink coming in 2013 is in part due to the lack of courage and will to do anything about the burden those illegally here place upon an already strained social
services safety net. We were in Austin last session and know that Lt. Governor David Dewhurst did nothing to try to curb illegal aliens’ access to social services, while the budget was being cut for citizens and legal residents! He did not support E-verify, limiting social services access to citizens and legal residents, nor even tracking and counting the cost of illegal aliens to the state budget.

2) On Lt. Governor David Dewhurst’s watch, the bill, which would have repealed in-state tuition for children of illegal aliens, was held up in committee because Dewhurst continues to appoint liberal Republicans and Democrats in key committee chair positions to keep conservative legislation off the floor for debate.

3) Over the many years he has served in office, Lt. Governor David Dewhurst has ignored the continued national security risk of sanctuary cities or de facto “hide outs” in Texas. Dewhurst has never, ever championed ending sanctuary cities, but rather gives it lip service when he’s running for office.

4) State Spending is rising! Lt. Governor David Dewhurst and other members of the Senate ignore the fact that state spending (all funds) rose 310% between 1990 and 2012, while population growth plus inflation totaled only 132%. The State of Texas has a growing dependency on federal funds. [Source: Texas Public Policy Foundation and Conservative Budget Coalition]. In spite of our calls to end crony capitalism — taxpayer dollar handouts to special interests – Dewhurst passed a budget that included $25 million in funding for a Formula One racetrack in Austin and handouts to the likes of Apple, Facebook, Frito-Lay, and Country-wide Financial/Bank of America, just to name a few! [Source: Governor Perry’s website:  Texas Enterprise Fund, updated April 30, 2012]

5) On Dewhurst’s watch, the state balanced its budget in part with accounting gimmicks and deferrals. It is a fact (see Legislative Budget Board documents and Comptroller reports) that the legislature purposefully underfunded Medicaid caseload growth by approximately $4.8 billion and used an accounting sleight of hand to defer $2.3 billion to the Foundation School Program (enrollment growth).  Dewhurst also approved a budget that diverted millions of dollars from the intended use (red light fines to trauma centers, for example) to help balance the budget.

6) When given a chance to join State Representative David Simpson and Senator Patrick in taking a real stand against the overreaching federal government in support of the Anti-groping TSA bill, David Dewhurst squandered an opportunity by caving to the federal government and thus killing the bill.

Fleming said, “Given these facts, here’s why a majority of the TEA Party Caucus Advisory Committee wants to make it clear that Senator Dan Patrick does not speak for us in this US Senate race when he calls Dewhurst “conservative”:

If Dewhurst supports taxpayer handouts to special interests in Texas, why would he stop that practice if he goes to Washington, DC?

If Dewhurst supports giving social services and welfare to illegals in Texas, why
would he stop that practice if he goes to Washington?

If Dewhurst supports amnesty and failed to end sanctuary city hideouts for
illegals in Texas, why would he stop that practice if he goes to Washington?

If Dewhurst approves of the use of accounting gimmicks and smoke-and-mirrors
techniques to balance the state budget, why wouldn’t he just add to the spending problem in Washington, DC?

If Dewhurst won’t stand up to the federal government and the TSA to protect our
Fourth Amendment rights, why would he change his behavior if he goes to Washington?

The best predictor of future behavior is what a man has done in the past.

Therefore, when Senator Dan Patrick calls Lt. Governor David Dewhurst “conservative” in his endorsement of Dewhurst for US Senate, Dan Patrick does not speak for us!

They’re being napalmed. Just a couple of days before Sen Patrick announced he wouldn’t be endorsing in this race. He was going to leave it up to us to decide. What a quick turn around. His credibility has dissolved with the very base he declares his allegiance with.

Numerous individuals are now being identified for their true positions regarding turning this country around. The people in elected office should all be nervous. If we can do this in Texas, anyone with the right candidate can do this in any race.

    Choose Cruz; I did.

  • cbartlett

than than the rest of the Austin politicians backing Dewhurst because they are afraid of the consequences if Cruz wins. Dewhurst stays as Lt Gov and they are all still going to have to deal with him. I am a 150% Cruz supporter but I will say I have huge concerns about what will happen to the State legislature if we send Cruz to Washington and Dewhurst stays here. There are some mighty huge bridges being burned right now. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen a fight this nasty in Texas.

    • edintexas

Send Dewhurst to DC to really get a chance to put the screws to us, and the rest of the country? Yes. it has been a nasty campaign, and it seems to me the nastiness between the two candidates is all one-sided.

    • Xasteius

You nuke the b!#$%d (granted, he’s hoisting on his own petard at this point) when he runs for office again.

      • gracie

just like Rick Perry’s. And he won re-election with 61.8%; Perry won with 54.97%. Ugh, he is going to be hard to beat. Sorry, I know you did not ask me; I just have a lot of energu on the subject.

the 2010 senate primary race between the RINO charlie crist and tea party backed marco rubio was much the same way as the texas senate race.

the heavily favored crist had the backing of all the ”establishment republicans” and a supposedly insurmountable 25-30 point lead. the outgunned rubio only had the support of a then fledgling movement called the tea party. we kept helping rubio close the gap and then patriotic conservatives like jim demint and sarah palin started coming to rubio’s aid. and crist started attacking rubio pretty hard.

and as we all know, rubio won the race pretty easily and isnow on the ”short list” to be named romneys VP.

i expect the same result here. and who knows, someday we may be saying ”president cruz”. :)

I am on a roller coaster. Every day I hear Cruz is doing well and Dew has shot himself in the foot and then I find out ALL of my neighbors are voting Dew. These are smart people, just not as informed as they should be. I happen to know they are quite conservative but they say they don’t want to “talk politics” so it is very hard to give them facts. Then here at the last minute they get one piece of mail from a friend blasting Cruz, making excuses for Dewhurt and all of a sudden they have got their guy. It makes me wonder how many more are out there like them! Scary!

      • cbartlett

Same experience here – conservatives, generally smart people, just not engaged or taking the time to get informed. Very frustrating because they are the first ones to accept the media sound bytes from Dewhurst campaign as absolute truth. Add that to the establishment types who are invested in big Austin politics for one reason or another and it’s back to that rollercoaster! Two of the only 5 or 6 Dewhurst signs I’ve seen in town (vs. hundreds of Cruz ones!) are in the yard of a neighbor across the street who I have known for 20 years. One of his sons works for the Republican party in Austin – there ya go.

BTW – I have heard both Beck & Hannity tell Ted numerous times that they are going to hold him accountable for his conservative, constitutional stand (and votes!) on issues. He has told them that he wants them to and will always take their calls about it. For what it’s worth……

And kyle8 – Saw a t-shirt at FreePAC last week that read:
“Sometimes we have to fight Republicans before we can defeat the Democrats”. Exactly.

    • http://impudent.edublogs.org/ kyle8

      fight the Democrats?

  • gekster

he will continue to do this in Washington.

Don’t look at wht he says, look at what he’s done.

  • gekster

we can continue in the relevant diary.

  • http://www.teaparty911.com irish067

Exactly right! Dewhurst takes the term “establishment” to a new level.

  • gekster

appears is all I am going to get from her.

  • http://wingright.org bnuckols

And I have no intention of ‘slamming’ her.

    I posted Dewhurst’s record here http://www.redstate.com/erick/2012/07/26/is-david-dewhurst-a-conservative-of-course-not/#comment-190908
a much wider Conservative record over 10yrs.

  • gekster

I guess it is better to ignore Dewhurst’s missteps than actually address them.

You are a shill for Dewhurst, arn’t you.
I gave you a chance to challenge Miss Fleming on her ascertations,
but for you it is dodge and deflect.

    Nice indeed.

  • txteach

The last I heard, Senator Patrick was NOT endorsing in this race (as stated on his FB page earlier this week and I cannot find anything saying that he has (except this item) – not even Dewcrist’s website (which pained me to have to check).

I agree with all Ms Fleming’s points about Dewcrist – and voted for Cruz on the first Day of early voting. I’ve had a sign in my yard since April. As I am one of Senator Patrick’s constituents and supporters, I keep a close eye on what he is up to.

Please ask Ms Fleming for documentation of this endorsement as I have found NONE. The only thing that comes close is a Dewcrist ad that USES a portion of an exchange / disagreement between Cruz and Patrick on Patrick’s radio show on the role of the Senate in the last legislative session and how Cruz was portraying the results.

    excerpt:
Earlier on Thursday, state Sen. Dan Patrick of Houston posted on Facebook that he would vote for Dewhurst. A conservative radio host, Patrick had declined to endorse in the race but did speak up several times to defend Dewhurst’s conservative record in the Texas Senate.

I didn’t want to believe that Patrick endorsed Dewhurst either, but unfortunately, he did.

  • gekster

It is peacefull in a way, and much better than her Dewhurst ditribes.

  • cbartlett

Just hope we can “control” a ticked-off Dewhurst who has a lot of power in Austin. We, the people, are going to have to take action. Cannot afford to be complacent ever again!

  • gracie

After this race getting Dew for Guv is truly nauseous. But he will be the heir apparent! If I remember correctly Rick Perry has never mentioned running again after this term. My desire for Dan Patrick moving on up has totally paled. I love Greg Abbott but cannot really see him challenging Dewhurst. We voted for Cruz on the first early day but cannot help but worry about Dewhurst in the Governor’s seat. Would love to know your opinion.

    http://hotlineoncall.nationaljournal.com/archives/2012/07/dewhurst-holds.php?utm_source=hotlineoncall.nationaljournal.com&utm_medium=twitter

Naturally, it is an internal poll. Those are the polls I trust most.

  • cbartlett

The “heir apparent” thing really stinks. And, assuming he loses to Cruz for Senate, there will be lots of establishment Republicans that feel sorry for him and will definitely work to make it happen. Even though Texans are the only ones who can actually vote for Cruz, the momentum (and funding!) from all over the country is certainly helping push the more conservative candidate. If Dewhurst runs for Governor, there will be lots of liberal media and big oil & finance dollars and rest of country? Probably not? Once again, just like nationally, getting real conservatives in both houses of the legislature becomes supremely important. We will still have the Demoncrat cross-over problem. They know a D will never win a state-wide race so they are extremely motivated to get the most “moderate” candidate elected. Sigh.

  • gekster

If he loses the Senate race, how could he win governor.

  • gracie

may not be factoring in the difference between the energized primary run-off and a statewide race or how many moderates we have who are fine with Dew! We may be a Red State and glorious it is! but we have a ton of outofstaters here. Geks and xasteius, respectfuly, we cannot take anything for granted! Are we worrying too soon? Dewhurst won by 61.8%! And cbartlett is correct that our conservative nominee would not have out of state resources to count on. Not to mention the sympathy vote! If Cruz wins they will want to give Dew a consolation prize…our Governorship! I was just catching up on some Mark Davis’ podcasts and yes people are VERY turned off by the Dew’s ads particularly the latest one about his blaming the suicide of that lady’s son who was in the prison on Cruz. Good to know but will it translate into running Dewhurst out of state office? Now that we KNOW what we have in Dewhurst we must start early to think of someone else. 2014 is not far away!!

  • Xasteius

How will be he be able to run for governor or any office now that he has proved himself a total douchebag in a red state?

  • gekster

If Dewhurst runs for Governor, there will be lots of liberal media and big oil & finance dollars and rest of country?

    :)

I don’t trust internal polls. Those are the ones I distrust the MOST.
I notice that you are posting from a site called National Journal, which research shows is owned by David G. Bradley.

“….Politically, Bradley considers himself a centrist,[1] although he has also described himself as “a neocon guy” who was “dead certain about the rightness” of invading Iraq.[9] In the 2008 U.S. presidential primaries he donated $4,300 to Hillary Clinton and $2,300 to Barack Obama and to Mitt Romney.[9]….
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Journal_Group

BTW, I haven’t been answering any polling phonecalls from Austin or “unidentified” or “private” numbers as I believe that is someone doesn’t have the gumption to list who they are or to leave a message, I don’t need to take my time to talk to them.

And, doubt that I’m alone in that.

Bad news when someone who is supposed to be a conservative is being endorsed by a publication owned by a man that has given $$ to the Clinton’s and Obama.

Blam! There goes Dewhurt’s creds as a conservative.

  • gracie

And quite interesting at that! I tried that link several times. I wanted to see the numbers. Ugh I am as nervous as my cat Gracie. For me it stated “did not match any documents.” I don’t know what the polls are at this point but certainly agree we have been flooded with calls that are useless to answer! BTW I did answer your question to me about Cruz and the debate; not sure if you saw it. Doesn’t matter.

  • avagreen

I’m rather spotty these days in reading/answering due to several circumstances.
Those phone calls are a nuisance, aren’t they?

  • cbartlett

We are getting them on all 5 lines at our office and our personal cell phones. We had our 22-year land line at home disconnected last month when we realized that the only calls we got were political surveys and an occasional solicitor. The fact that these people can GET my cell number irratates me, never mind wasting our time at work. I know we’re not the only ones hanging up on those calls – can’t believe any of these polls are very accurate.
