I need HELP – people around here are acting irrationally

And by “here”, I mean North Carolina, where I live, and Virginia, where I travel. My wife is actually one of these people. She is at the grocery store, “stocking up”. She wants me to split some wood, and get the propane tank filled, and park the car at the top of the hill. She’s not the only one – the grocery store is jam packed. There are trucks putting “brine” on the roads. No one is making plans for tomorrow. We may not even plan on going to church Sunday.

Right now it is partly cloudy, about 35 degrees, and everything is fine. I don’t know what is going on. But let’s change the subject (sorta) for one paragraph.

You may have heard about some of Barack Obama’s remarks to the attendees at the GOP retreat in Baltimore. He gave the amount of job losses in December of 2009, and asked if the attendees thought his policies were the cause. He gave the figures for January 2010, and asked the same question.

Here is the answer to both questions.

My wife, and many others like her, are doing the only rational thing that can be done – they are preparing for a storm they know is coming. It may be moderate, it may be severe, but we know for a fact that it is on its way, and it would be foolish not to be prepared. As the caretakers for our family, it is our responsibility to do so.

Barry, after the November election business people across this country knew a storm was coming. Every prediction they were planning on back then has come true now. There has been a war on American business, from banks to pharmaceutical companies to oil companies to S corporations down the block. To paraphrase a movie, they knew you were a comin’, and hell was comin’ with you.

The caretakers of business prepared for the Obama storm by laying off or firing hundreds of thousands of workers, because they know when Democrats are in charge of the White House and Congress, taxpayers and businesses are square on the enemies list. Consumers prepared by cleaning up their balance sheets as best they could and eliminating consumption. So don’t act like you just landed on earth. People who earn their living planning for the future planned for your arrival, and the jobs that were lost are absolutely, directly related to you.

Just statin’ the facts.

what to prepare for; it was highly likely that Comrade Obama would be President and the best you could hope for would be the feckless McCain and a Hellbent Democrat controlled Congress. If you had a business you were clearly facing significant tax increases, mandatory HI coverage or taxes equivalent, and card check unionization. If you had a brain in your head, you shucked every employee that you had the slightest doubt about and pared your business down to a maintenance level before Comrade Obama took His hand of The Bible.

that the Dem takeover of Congress in Jan of 2007 also bespoke a tax hiking and no expanded oil drilling storm that investors have been planning to weather even BEFORE the Fannie Mae storm. Barry voted for all the things he complains about from the “Bush” administration, as if congress mattered not a whit, including his senate votes.

It is amazing to me how many of the business people I spoke with after the election – actually, when Barry took the lead – shared with me the business equivalent of planning for the aftermath of nuclear war. I can’t count how may times I heard “I’ll just shut it down” from these business owners.

When the numbers and risk don’t make any sense, capitalists go into hibernation. That is what is happening right now. As Mike pointed out, it began after November 2006, and Barry’s election drove the final nail in the coffin.

one year ago that things would be worse now, even if Reagan had been cloned and elected instead of Obama or McCain. The problem now is that Obama is doing NOTHING to make it possible to have a recovery. Nothing!

Crisis helps in consolidation of power. Distract, divert and trick.

But I must take umbrage with one sentence you wrote. The terms “35 degrees” and “everything is fine” DO NOT belong in a sentence concerning North Carolina!

Nothing to see here, go read something that’s actually useful.

        …maybe “historic” would be a better term….

in north central North Carolina (4-6 inches) and the forecasted prospects of double that by dinner time – while not UNprecedented, are pretty darn rare.

We had nearly a foot of snow the week before Christmas and they are predicting the same for today. I can see why people this time are acting a TAD more anxious. We just do not get snowfalls like this….it’s a once-in-10-years kind of thing.

What is it with people below the 50th parallel?

          • nessa

but I like to ride, year round. This snow crap really cuts into riding time. Even ebay doesn’t have tire chains for my FLHX, WTF? No choice but to wait for the thaw. For us wimps that will be Monday at the latest, not early May like you! hehe…

I have to keep my FXRS bottled up for months! at a time.

Maybe I should move south too…. But it’s even cold in Miami these days!

peeking through in several places in the yard; pretty icy though. I haven’t even put the snow tires on my car this year because they wear so fast if the roads aren’t covered with ice and snow. It’s a balmy 33 degrees this morning but the barometer is rising and the wind is backing to the north so it looks like a spell of clear and cold is coming – but you don’t have to shovel it!

You are dead on and so enough of the Bama finger-pointing.

Facts are stubborn things; and whatever may be our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passion, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence. –John Adams

It puts basic economics in terms that even Obama could understand.

I get your meaning, but that metaphor is like fingernails on a chalkboard. Can’t O be Billy Bob Thornton who won’t throw down or skin his smokewagon but just sits there and bleeds? Heh heh.
