What Erick Forgets

The last few days have been incredible. Instead of focusing on the events surrounding the assassination of Ambassador Stevens – the first to be murdered since our ambassador to Afghanistan was killed under the watchful eye of Jimmy Carter, we’re talking about polls. Instead of focusing on Barack Obama refusing to answer questions about the murder, citing an “ongoing investigation by the FBI”, then finding that no one from the FBI has been to Benghazi- even today – we are fighting amongst ourselves over polling trends and skewed sampling. And instead of understanding what is really going on in the country, with gas double what it was in 2008, household incomes down 8.2% since 2008, GDP revised to a barely-above-recession 1.3% and food inflation out of control, we are giving the Romney campaign advice.

Here is what Erick, and we, forget.

In the swing state of Virginia before Obama, Bob McDonnell beat Creigh Deeds by only 3,000 votes in the race for attorney general. After Obama, he beat Deeds by 300,000 in the race for Governor. Before Obama, the two Senate seats were firmly in Democrat hands. After Obama, one Democrat has suddenly retired and the seat is very much in play.

In the swing state of North Carolina, before Obama Democrats had firm control of the Governor’s mansion and both houses of the legislature. After Obama, the legislature of North Carolina went Republican for the first time since 1898, and the House went Republican for the first time in 112 years. Instead of running for re-election, the governor has “retired”,  the governor prior to her has been indicted, and GOP candidate Pat McCrory is on his way to victory.

In Wisconsin, before Obama, unions had a choke hold on elections and local schools. After Obama, Scott Walker bravely fought off the thugs not once, but twice, dealing both them and MSNBC a blow that they will not recover from and inspiring governors and mayors across the country, both Democrat and Republican, to do the same thing. And when is the last time Hollywood made an anti-union movie?

Did I mention Chris Christie?

Before Obama, unemployment in Ohio was 9% and the state was facing an $8 billion shortfall with no hope. After Obama, GOP governor John Kasich was elected, and unemployment went from 9% to 7.9% in his first year. An $8 billion dollar deficit turned into a balanced budget.

Did I mention Bobby Jindal? Is anyone even running against him in this landslide year for Obama? No? We’re not sure? What?

Marco Rubio is in the swing state of Florida? Think the Hispanics have noticed which party he belongs to?

Hey, what happened in 2010 in the House and Senate? How’d we do?

Is Romney behind? Hell no, he’s not behind. I live in an area of North Carolina which is politically about two inches from North Korea, and you know how many yard signs are in my neighborhood? Two. You know how many there were in 2008? About fifty. You know how many Obama bumper stickers I see when I drive around in North Carolina and Virginia? (and I drive about 48,000 miles a year) I’ll tell you how many – about a tenth of what I saw last year. At the most. You know how many people I can name who voted for Obama in 2008, and are either voting for Romney or not voting at all this year? About twenty. Try THAT for polling data.

Don’t hand me this “Romney’s behind” crap. I heard that Walker was all done and Amendment One didn’t have a chance, too. Oh, it’ll be close. The dependent class will be bused to polls and paid with cigarettes and the military will be disenfranchised at every turn, but DO NOT TELL ME that what happened after Obama doesn’t matter, and it has been forgotten, and that we are all somehow unaware of what is going on every time we get gas or buy milk or pick up our paychecks or drive by a food bank or watch an ambassador being dragged through the streets of Libya. DO NOT pee on my leg and tell me it is raining.

We have an opportunity to elect the perfect person for our times – Mitt Romney. He is a decent man, fit for the job, and will be able to handle the looming disaster Obama has created. He will mop the floor with Obama in the debates, because Obama is a stuttering hologram with no clue as to how to govern. Paul Ryan will make Joe Biden look like the straight jacketed idiot he is, and we will all thank God Almighty that Barack Obama is in good health because having Joe Biden as a President would be only a notch above having a lemur occupy the Oval Office. And a real lemur – not the funny ones in cartoons.

Romney will win. Bank on it. And if he doesn’t, we have much, much bigger problems than we can ever know or probably even solve.

I was with you until you claimed Romney was the perfect person for our times. I just can’t quite bring myself to drink that much cool aid.

      Concern troll much?

      • lincolnsbeard

concern troll? what if the concerns are real?
Sticking your head in the sand much?

        • commonsenseobserver

          This is not concern.
          It’s lying.

    • tyman

I, too, was worried about Romney during the primaries. However, I heard someone who was from Massachusetts talk about how he stood up to the Democratically controlled House and Senate and used his veto pen many, many times…that may be the reason he faced an uphill climb to get re-elected now that I think about it. Having said that, Romney is not the second coming of Ronald Reagan. However, I feel much better about him than I did. Plus, Romney made a VERY smart move in my book by picking Ryan as VP. Unlike Bush, barring a scandal or something really bad, Romney has picked someone who is a very strong presidential candidate in his own right.

So many people have said that the economy isn’t going to turn right around. It may not, but I don’t think it will be as slow as some are predicting. Obama is a wet blanket on the economy just by being in The White House. If he is defeated on Nov. 6, I predict that markets around the world will rise in anticipation of him leaving.

I really enjoyed Jack’s above diary. I wish that he would have pointed out Rubio’s margin of victory in Florida…I think it was pretty large considering it was a 3 person race.

I don’t want to be overconfident or complacent, but I hope to use this to help light a fire under those that think we’ve already lost. I heard Sean Hannity again today, and several Obama supporters called and said that Obama’s already won. If anybody’s overconfident, I want it to be the other side.

      • tyman

Marco Rubio won the election with 48.9% of the vote. Crist had 29.7 and the other Dem had 20.1. So…Rubio got almost 50% in a 3 man race? I understand about all of the Hispanic vote, but did he get ALL of them?

      • Jack_Savage

Exactly. And one of the three was the former GOP governor.

      • lincolnsbeard

Rubio? it worries me that he couldn’t even get above 50 percent.

    • Jack_Savage

Let me explain why. The times require an man who is utterly decent and beyond reproach, an optimist with a financial and business background who can assess a dire situation and deliver what is necessary to turn it around. Romney is all the above in spades.

      • candleburn

If you ask me, that man is Paul Ryan, not Mitt Romney. Romney has changed his positions too many times based on the way the wind was blowing for me to agree that he is beyond reproach.

        • Jack_Savage

So you think in his personal life he has changed positions? That his character shifts, depending on the circumstances?

          • lincolnsbeard

Who really cares about this personal life? What people care about is his policy positions
he DID flip flop on many: abortion, gay marriage, reagan, Obomneycare, you name it, mitt has flipped on it. Which doesn’t really inspire me to go out and canvas for him, I will vote for him, but canvassing … idk.

          • commonsenseobserver

            Oh, well, your employer?
His values have remained the same, his approach to things has changed. Pretty normal, no? Then again, a Chicago troll like you wouldn’t know anything about what ordinary people think.

          • rabun1016

No way you vote for Romney. No way, pal. There is no hiding a yellow dog.

          • streiff

He was a moby and he’s gone.

      • lincolnsbeard

But he’s gotta get better at the messaging:
Claiming that Obama has said; “If we talk about the economy, we’ll lose” while 2.3 seconds of youtube could give ANYONE the full quote, is simply in Noonans words, a rolling calamity. Most things Romney claims about Obama is of the same nature, it’s easy to combat with full quotes, youtube clips etc.
THAT is highly incompetent campaigning, which I would’ve expected from Rsantorum, but not Romney
Obama is way better at the lying stuff. Romney is inept when it comes to that.

  • jamesm

Good Article Jack. I am laughing inside because of all the crap we hear “Romney is behind” I agree with you. Bank on it..Romney will win. I have seen elections for years. I trust my judgment more than anyone I know. Obama is done in November. The grass roots do not give a damn what any fluffy conservative or the media says. Pundits won’t get Romney elected. The people will.

    • Jack_Savage

The people are grim, and determined, and the difference between this election and last is palpable.

      • carolina

I agree Jack. I don’t perceive that the voters have changed their minds one whit since 2010. We want to finish the job we started in 2010!

  • http://www.examiner.com/x-1597-Charlotte-Law--Politics-Examiner Mike gamecock DeVine

Jack, thx for the savage dismembering of poll-driven conventional wisdom.

    • Jack_Savage

      Best to you GC.

    • lincolnsbeard

Polls don’t really matter now that we’re gonna Voter ID their butts out!

      • streiff

did you have fun? I’ll give you credit you were as good a moby as we’ve seen for a while.

      • http://www.examiner.com/x-1597-Charlotte-Law--Politics-Examiner Mike gamecock DeVine

The dead, illegals and felons could have a problem. And?

  • clowngirl

    This is excellent Mr. Savage!

Optimism with solid reasons behind it. Side question your diary made me think of:

Romney is way ahead with the military, right? But are there votes being taken into account in any of these polls?

Does anyone know the percentage of the population that is active duty military right now? I’m thinking VA has a particularly high percentage of active duty military — is that accurate?

    • Jack_Savage

Hmmm…a good question I hope someone sees and answers.
      Thx, BTW.

  • lineholder

Hey, Jack. Two inches from North Korea in a political sense? I’m guessing you live up around the Research Triangle area. If that is true, then your description is pretty accurate. I live in the Triad area. I wish there was a way to explain it to people who live in solidly red states what kind of change has been going on in NC, particularly over the last year or so. I can see, too. It’s literally palpable, isn’t it?

I wouldn’t have expected this kind of change, would you?

Maybe actually seeing those changes is what gives us a different viewpoint than other people might have.

I believe that Romney will win as well. I’m not willing to take an attitude of predetermined failure, not after seeing the kind of change I’ve seen in NC.

    • Jack_Savage

Hah! You guess correctly, grasshopper. The one thing about educated elites is that sooner or later they have to look around and explain what they observe, and what they are observing is decline.
I was despondent in 2008, but after everyone here came to their senses in 2010, and after seeing what I am seeing now – a complete flatline as far as enthusiasm goes among the lefties around here – I am more encouraged.
      But we will see…

  • irishgirl

Enjoyed your article very much. It’s like an alternate universe reading all the campaign stuff, polling, etc. and just a small amount of coverage anywhere about the Middle East debacle (for lack of better word). I find it hard to believe any voter with half a brain does not see the way the Obama administration has been trying to spin the mess they allowed in Libya. Obama states he’s running on his “foreign policy”. How can he even state that with a straight face? And my firm gut held belief is when someone who may be an independent or even liberal but doesn’t have a job, they’re gonna vote for the man who they believe can make that happen. Did anyone see the SNL opening skit last night? It was perfect.

    • Jack_Savage

Thanks – someone made the comment that how popular culture receives the debates and the reminder of the campaign will be very telling. I look forward to it.
Obama’s foreign policy has been a joke, and Hillary is doing serious damage to her Presidential prospects by being aligned with it.
