A Comrade in Need is a Comrade Indeed and the Cold War Kids Test
World War Three or Election Year Collusion?
Today Russia promised to attack NATO if the missile shield talks in Washington breakdown.
It feels like we have entered “I Vill Transmit Dis to Vladimir II” territory today, with Russia promising military strikes against US and NATO missile sites if we don’t play along. World War III on the horizon, or is this just another election year strategy between willing accomplices?
Last month I posited my take on the international nuclear security summit mic slip-up in Seoul, Korea between two Presidential pals, Obama and outgoing President Medvedev of Russia. Mr. Obama, in friendly camaraderie seemed to promise he would have “more flexibility” to negotiate on the NATO plans for missile shields against Iranian ICBM’s after winning the November 2012 election.
Today, with Romney overtaking Obama in some polls, it seems the Russians need to offer the Americans a little reminder of who really is in charge. Maybe I’m a bit cynical about politics, but I’m a “cold war kid.”
WW III?
What are the NATO-Russian talks about and Russia’s promise of an attack?
Here’s the elevator version:
“Russia’s most senior military officer said Thursday that Moscow would preemptively strike and destroy U.S. led NATO missile defense sites in Eastern Europe if talks with Washington about the developing system continue to stall.
“A decision to use destructive force preemptively will be taken if the situation worsens,” Russian Chief of General Staff Nikolai Makarov said at an international missile defense conference in
Moscow attended by senior U.S. and NATO officials.
“Russian officials insist that the system has the capability to shoot down their ICBMs, thus robbing their nuclear deterrent of its credibility and destabilizing the Cold War-era balance of mutually assured destruction.” http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2012/may/3/russia-threatens-strike-nato-missile-defense-sites/
A MAD MAD WORLD:
So … we don’t want the ‘Mutually Assured Destruction” (MAD) Cold War days back, right? And Mr. Obama is being given an opportunity by the Russians to be reasonable, right?
Let’s take a closer look…
USA and NATO want to deploy a missile defense system in Eastern Europe to stem the threat of a possible Iranian ICBM nuclear attack, promising it isn’t a ploy to shield ICBM attacks from Russia. Naturally, Russia doesn’t want a strong defensive posture against any nukes in its backyard, especially in former client states Poland and Romania, but also Turkey.
Simple enough.
Just like the October 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis the US can promise to take nukes out of Turkey if Russia removes them from Cuba, right? Not if Russia has to negotiate with Romney.
So if Obama is to get an election bump, and Russia is to get the continued policy weakness they require to advance their chess pieces on the international security board, we have a need for a rhetorical “kill shot” of a “mutually assured destruction” kind from the White House.
Preferably coming from the “ Situation Room” where “Rock Center” Brian Williams of NBC can offer a gratuitous election year “Special” interview to follow up this week’s “Special” – an inside look to the CINC’s mindset on war and the killing of Osama bin Laden.
Because “truth is stranger than fiction” and the fact that no “mic” slip-up will have happened between Mr. Obama and Mr. Medvedev this week, let’s create a “what if” dialogue which fiction folks like me often enjoy.
The mainstream media makes things up all the time, and shouldn’t be the only ones to have fun… Here’s what we might have heard as two leaders engaged on a call today over the White House hotline between Washington and Moscow, or the “Red Phone.”
COMRADE TO COMRADE
OBAMA: “Hey Sergei. How the hell are things going? You looking forward to retirement?”
MEDVEDEV: “Da.”
OBAMA: “Let me cut to the chase here, Sergei. I am having a numbers problem with the election polling over here and could use a good comrade to help me out.”
MEDVEDEV: “Da.”
OBAMA: “That taking credit for killing Osama just isn’t taking with the American people. You know ‘Obama kills Osama?’ Sounds a bit confusing and Americans are pretty simple minded, right?”
MEDVEDEV: “Da.”
OBAMA: “So here’s the thing. A comrade in need is a comrade indeed, right?”
MEDVEDEV: “Da.”
OBAMA: “I scratch your outgoing Russian Presidential back, you look good to Vlad. You scratch mine I look good to the American voters.”
MEDVEDEV: “Da.”
OBAMA: “I need a war, or what looks like it could be one. Remember that promise I made in Korea? Pretty funny how the ‘mic’ was on… Well, I want to keep my promise on that but need a little help. You with me?”
MEDVEDEV: “Da.”
OBAMA: “Good. Well here’s what I need. I need you to call Vlad and have him okay this with General Nicolai Makarov. You know, I don’t want this to turn into a ‘MAD with Vlad’ thing when he takes over as President for life.”
MEDVEDEV: “Da.”
OBAMA: “I need some really good threats that I can stand up to; you know make a little noise. Get me some percentage points with the Amerikanski pollsters.”
MEDVEDEV: “Da.”
OBAMA: “So we good on this? Maybe have Nikolai say, ‘“A decision to use destructive force preemptively will be taken if the situation worsens,’. You understand. Gives me a little more space until after the election.”
MEDVEDEV: “Da. I vill transmit dis to Vladimir.”
ANALYSIS:
So there you have it. The fictional collusion of two globalist Presidents by a cynical cold war kid, as imagined based upon headlines appearing a mere six hours before this writing.
What is true is this…
Russia doesn’t want a tough guy Reagan at Reykjavik style nuclear summit where a conservative backed President won’t “blink.” They need a friendly globalist comrade who will “wink.”
So my humble analysis today is this is an election set-up from pals devoted to the same cause… If you were Putin who would you rather deal with over the next four years?
Russia surely doesn’t want to deal with Romney, who Pravda called“oaf” just weeks ago, backed by America’s 75 million baby boomer “cold war kids” from the Billy Joel lyrics in “Leningrad”:
“I was born in ’49. A cold war kid in McCarthy time.
Stop ‘em all at the 38th Parallel. Blast those yellow reds to hell.
And cold war kids were hard to kill. Under their desks in an air raid drill.
Haven’t they heard we won the war. What do they keep on fighting for? “
