REPUBLIC of TEXAS! 30,000+ Citizens Sign White House Petition to Secede from the Union

“REMEMBER THE ALAMO!”

UPDATE: 9:15 pm EST

Note: This is about individual citizen venting, not tied to actual state governments, and carries no official weight — simply an exercise of First Amendment rights. It should be viewed in the context of a citizenry voicing healthy concerns in a conservative-liberal debate over Federal policies and centralized government invoking Federal over state rights — a legitimate citizen concern.

Texans Seek Redress of Grievances:

A statement of dissatisfaction has appeared on the White House website from over 30,000 Texas citizens requesting a peaceful withdrawal from the Union.

When you consider the history of Texas, which began as a revolt from Mexico with the famous battle cry “Remember the Alamo,” it is no surprise to find citizen pride in their uniqueness and a desire to retain it. But secede from the Union?

No doubt to become the butt of jokes by late night hosts, the issue is really just having a voice and exercising the rights to appeal directly to government leadership. In this case the appeal is simply this:  ”Texas citizens are tired of being disregarded.”

According to the White House 25,000 signatures must be obtained to seek any review upon a petition proposal.

As of this hour there are 31, 079 Texan signatures. In addition I counted 20 other petitions from citizens seeking the same for their respective states; again an exercise in futility in any real terms, but being noticed nevertheless.

Totally disconnected from reality of how government works, it is interesting to watch a protest thermometer heat up surrounding support of states rights combined with support for the US Constitution.

Here’s the actual wording of the petition to secede as shown at the White House website:

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

WE PETITION THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION TO:

Peacefully grant the State of Texas to withdraw from the United States of America and create its own NEW government.

The US continues to suffer economic difficulties stemming from the federal government’s neglect to reform domestic and foreign spending. The citizens of the US suffer from blatant abuses of their rights such as the NDAA, the TSA, etc. Given that the state of Texas maintains a balanced budget and is the 15th largest economy in the world, it is practically feasible for Texas to withdraw from the union, and to do so would protect it’s citizens’ standard of living and re-secure their rights and liberties in accordance with the original ideas and beliefs of our founding fathers which are no longer being reflected by the federal government.  Created: Nov 09, 2012

The Real Questions Are Constitutional
Driving this is a quintessential grassroots concern over  the the loss of  personal liberty to big government, and nothing less than federalism and original arguments from the founders on the virtues of limited government. Likewise it raises the appropriate state’s right questions seeking a constitutional response:
  • “Can centralized government from far away serve the distinct needs of our state in a “one size fits all” regulatory approach?”
  • “Can states in fact expect the protections offered in Article 4 Section 4 of the US Constitution and as prescribed in the 10th Amendment?”
It will be interesting to see how large these petitions grow.

Yeah! Now Obama can only lord over 46 states. How do like them apples, Barack?

    • Bill S

You can be sure the WH’s response will be to point and laugh, since those petitions aren’t worth the electrons they’re printed on.

      • tngal

Bill don’t you dare take away my one little ray of sunshine that I’ve had in days. And I was just getting stoked about it, too. Darn it.

        • Bill S

          Oops. Sorry…

  • GremlinJones

Those petitions are good for venting, nothing more.

  • Donald Ayotte

It’s time to sell my property in Delaware and move to Texas. Remember the Alamo!

    • checkmate2012

Just don’t bring a left agenda with you and you’ll be welcome. Sorry as you probably wouldn’t be on RS if you were left but many a lefty has infiltrated our state to its detriment :)

  • tngal

Lonestar State isn’t the only one with a petition to secede. The DC has a list of other states looking to breakaway. Same requirement. 25,000 sigs have to be on a petition for the WH to review it. Or, according to Bill, point and laugh at it. You can click on the DC story and the states are highlighted so you can go straight to your petition if you are so inclined. So if you’re ready to put your name down on a petition and probably be forever put in a secret gov’t file somewhere, or if you just want to give the WH a chuckle, here are the states with petitions.

“Other than Texas, states with secession-related petitions pending in a public area of the White House’s website now include Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina and Tennessee.

Three states — Georgia, Missouri and South Carolina — are
each represented by two competing petitions.”

I saw this. This is troubling, but the natural result of having a President who has perpetrated class warfare, division, and racial hatred both during his campaigns and as President.

And note friends, the states listed are not all in the South. The WH cannot simply ignore this and laugh it off. They must moderate their positions and tack to the center. This nation is one big powder keg set to explode if things do not change.

Let’s begin by getting to the bottom of Benghazi.

      • Bill S

I appreciate your enthusiasm, but…those petitions are little more than a blog post. The administration will do exactly nothing. Millions of people voted against the Left’s agenda in 2008, 2010 and 2012. Nothing will change. He won. The only way we change this is if WE win.

        • checkmate2012

Bill, agree that the petitions are but simply symbolic but they should give the prez pause when folks from 21+ states have applied to secede and some will get the required votes. Silly but noteworthy indeed.

          • Bill S

            “Should”, yes. But won’t.

          • checkmate2012

Yeah, I know. Wishful thinking gets me nowhere. It’s hard to make an impression on our ruler on high.

        • runner12

I agree that this will likely go nowhere and I apologize if my post had an ominous note to it because I hate that sort of thing. Perhaps I was not as clear as I should have been. I am troubled that there is even talk of such action, because it further illustrates how deeply divided we are. More insulting, is that our President has been both the instigator and sustainer of such division.

What I meant by the WH not laughing it off, is that they may want to wake up and realize how divided this nation is. They did not get a mandate and half the country does not see things their way. If they were at all intelligent, they would moderate their positions.

          • GremlinJones

If we had won and a bunch of liberals started creating all these polls, we wouldn’t advocate for Romney to govern more to the center. We would point and laugh, and forward them a recipe of how to turn sour grapes into sour grape lemonade.

        • lineholder

Not so sure about that, Bill. With TX gone, wouldn’t this come close to ensuring D superiority in Presidential elections from now until the end of time?

Then again, I also think that if they let TX secede, they will also let Mexico invade TX and do nothing to stop it. Just a thought.

          • texashistorian

Mexico couldn’t pull it off- and we wouldn’t really need Federal help if they tried. Not that this will happen in our lifetimes probably, but I would like Texas’ chances as a Republic. Even more so considering that if Texas went, it more than likely wouldn’t go alone.

  • runner12

While this is purely venting and will likely not go anywhere, it does show the state the nation is in right now. If Obama does not tack to the center soon, this country may be on its way to permanent division. I pray that does not ever come to be.

  • deltawing

I thnk this is a great idea. Too bad only a small minority of Texans would support it.

    • paladin1

      I will.

  • tngal

The petition drive is up to 47 states, after only having 20+ last night. Only Maine, Vermont and Washington have no plans to secede.

What’s interesting is those are the only three without a petition,so that means California is not a happy camper. A state that just raised taxes on itself. What are they complaining about?
An interesting note, the online rules do not prohibit Americans from signing a petition
that would not affect states where they live. Looking at Tennessee’s, there were people from all over including Canada who wants us to breakaway. Funny stuff.

As long as understand the logisitics of this are a disaster and the outcome would be tragic, I can deal with a limited political temper-tantrum. At the end of the day, we have to work through the system as corrupt as it seems to be.
When you start getting into who the heavily armoured divisions at Ft. Hood consider POTUS and what hppens to any SAC Nuclear Weapons siloed w/in Texas, this could be a scary road to fatal idiocy.
