Behind the We Are Ohio Curtain

If you live in Ohio and have followed coverage of Issue 2 (or watched a college football game in the past month) you’ve heard of “We Are Ohio,” the group trying to kill government union reform. You may also know We Are Ohio describes itself as a bipartisan, grassroots movement speaking for Ohio’s middle class.

Would you be surprised to learn the group’s July report to the Secretary of State listed $4.2 million from D.C. unions, more than $2 million from Ohio unions, and less than $40,000 from individual donors? [Update, 10-20-2011 - I missed a number of lines when sifting through data for the previous version, including half a million dollars from SEIU in D.C.! Corrected chart follows.]

We Are Ohio Funding Sources

Simply put, We Are Ohio is a union front group. Why do you think the folks rescuing Ohio from Senate Bill 5 so rarely discuss what’s in Senate Bill 5? Because few informed taxpayers would oppose commonsense government union reforms, including:

  • Requiring public employees to pay a small share of their health insurance costs
  • Requiring public employees to pay a small share of their pension costs
  • Ending automatic raises paid regardless of merit
  • Ending mandatory “fair share” fees charged to non-union workers
  • Restoring to elected officials many decisions currently made by union bosses

We Are Ohio exists to protect the flow of taxpayer dollars from government offices into union coffers. Every action – from the more than $800,000 spent on their signature drive to the shameful ads we see today – is a means to this end.

We Are Ohio’s campaign is full of dishonesty and race-baiting; union bosses make big bucks spewing class warfare; unions mistreat their retirees; unions silence their own workers; unions attack public employees who step out of line. Would any of these things be true if government unions represented Ohio’s middle class?

Ohioans, don’t fall for We Are Ohio’s self-serving lies. When you vote this fall, Vote Yes on Issue 2!

I hope this gets some serious media exposure. The OH taxpayers/voters need to know the facts.

Thanks for pointing this out. Early on, many thought this was going to be a slam-dunk by the unions. However, the latest polls show the tide may be turning a bit. Still, when these union people are throwing the 9/11 card and running ads implying firefighters are going to be in danger if this doesn’t pass, it’s a tough climb.

iVoters.com/ has some excellent information presented in a non-partisan fashion. There are 25 FAQ’s about SB5 and video Q & A. Unfortunately, despite repeated attempts, they couldn’t get anyone from union side to agree to speak in favor of Issue 2.This has been a pattern with them. They have their messaging locked down. They don’t want their members or the public to really know what’s in the bill.

Good to see you shining some disinfecting sunlight on all the union corruption and undue influence in our state. Kasich and Better Ohio have been wrongly vilified for trying to bring some sanity to our state and local budgets through reasonable reforms and increased local control and accountability. Nearly all the We Are Ohio propaganda is based on lies. Hopefully we can reach enough voters with the truth and set ourselves free from this financial and political leviathan.

Their ads are total bunk. Firefighters basically saying you’ll probably die if SB5 doesn’t get repealed.

Insinuating that the Unions fight for more emergency workers as opposed to fighting for more FOR the workers. SB 5 apparently means that cities will forego emergency personnel, leaving you with a garden hose and buckets when your house catches fire.

Of course the opposite is true. The contracts don’t prevent mass-layoffs or hiring freezes, they encourage them by refusing to negotiate packages – so that cuts in personnel is often the only way to cut costs.

Thanks, carolina & ohmom23! I stumbled down the government union rabbit-hole last November, and have spent much of my free time since then trying to help with Ohio’s reform efforts.

Appreciate your feedback – hopefully we can reach enough voters in the next few weeks, despite the fog union bosses have spent millions churning up!
