A Democratic Mayoral Candidate Is Pro-Life and the Left Is Freaking Out

The left and cohorts in the mainstream media are happy to paint Republicans as wild-eyed extremists on the issue of abortion. It is a position that fails the sniff test time after time, but they continue to repeat it.

The Democrats are a party as a whole that believes in abortion on demand. Abortion for any reason and at any stage of the pregnancy with zero restrictions. They pretend to support restrictions just so long as there is an exception for the “health” of the mother. Restrictions are toothless with such an exception as it is so vague, a doctor can think of any excuse for how the lack of abortion can affect a woman’s “health.”

The proof is in the polling which has been consistent over the years. For the longest time, Democrats were content to brag about polling which asked, “Are you pro-life or pro-choice?” Until recently, the pro-choice side won out. It wasn’t until Gallup started doing a deeper dive that public opinion was fully expressed.

Gallup began to break the question up into three groups:

The legality of abortion:

  • Legal under any circumstances
  • Legal under only certain circumstances
  • Illegal in all circumstances

Gallup’s latest results show 50% of the American people occupy the area where it should be legal only in certain circumstances. In other words, they support restrictions. 29% support abortion being legal in all circumstances, and 19% think it should be illegal in all circumstances.

Democrats are the extremists because they are held hostage by the far left’s view on abortion. Abortion on demand is not the view of most Americans. One could argue the Republican viewpoint is extreme except the Republican Party has a history of pro-choice Republicans serving in office including Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski.

That’s why it comes as no surprise to see the left having a freakout over a pro-life Democrat, Heath Mello, running for Mayor in the city of Omaha, Nebraska. His sin? He sponsored a bill in 2009 that required informing a woman of her right to request a fetal ultrasound before obtaining an abortion.

Note, the law would not require an ultrasound but only that it’s necessary to tell a woman she has that right.

Why is this controversial?

It doesn’t prevent her from getting an abortion. Extreme abortion groups such as NARAL and left-wing websites such as Daily Kos are in an uproar:

“The actions today by the DNC to embrace and support a candidate for office who will strip women — one of the most critical constituencies for the party — of our basic rights and freedom is not only disappointing, it is politically stupid,” NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue said in a statement.

The popular liberal website Daily Kos also withdrew its endorsement of Mello on Thursday, citing his stance on the ultrasound bill.

DNC chief, Tom Perez, weighed in:

DNC Chairman Tom Perez, who will not appear with Mello in Nebraska, released a statement Thursday that reiterated the party’s “support for every woman’s right to make their own choices about their reproductive health and to have access to safe abortion services.”

“Our job at the DNC is to help Democrats who have garnered support from voters in their community cross the finish line and win — from school board to Senate,” Perez said. “The biggest threat to women’s reproductive rights is the relentless Republican attacks on women’s health care, including legal, accessible abortion services.”

In other words, “Shut up about abortion, Mello.”

Let this be a reminder of who truly occupies the “extremist” view on abortion.
